twenty2wo magazine issue_03 Welcome to the third issue of twenty2wo magazine. This time around I wanted to keep more focused on illustrators and am happy to feature some wonderful talents from around the globe. Whether it be digital techniques or traditional methods the art of illustration always seems to open the imagination to new worlds. Just a few marks on paper and a simple line is transformed into a shape, a figure, a message. Pick up a pen and make your mark somewhere. Born in Athens, Greece in 1980 ChristinaK. now lives and works in London where she has established herself as an interesting new talent. Illustrator, designer, screenprinter, art director, film lover; a creative mind in general, Christina K. works with a blend of both traditional and digital mark making techniques the result being striking and sightful illustrations with subtle narratives and delicate elegiac qualities. The melange of influences which ignite the creative inspiration behind ChristinaK.’s work have little common ground other than an obvious energy and a bias towards the hedonistic love of visual sensation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is on permanent exhibition at Cosh galleries in London and has built a client list which includes Ogilvy&Mother, Saatchi&Saatchi, Mother London, Chanel, Levi’s, La Perla, Ted Baker, Elley Kishimoto, Burton Snowboards, Bloomingdales, South Coast Plaza, Time Out, Hintmag, Hot Wheels, Tokion, Vogue, Neo2, Ozon, Colophon, Nico, amongst others. The last issue featured the work of Francis Vallejo which generated a lot of positive feedback. This time we look again at a student coming out of Ringling College of Art and Design. Emerging artist Oliver Dominguez, was born and raised in Miami, FL with Colombian roots. His work has appeared in the pages of Men’s Styles Australia magazine, Gulf Coast 500 Business, CMYK and the Society of Illustrators 50, to name a few. Oliver sent us some beautiful illustrations and some words about his work.
Oliver Dominguez Currently, as an artist, I am always intrigued by different mediums of the past, present and future. Everyday, I dedicate my life in search of inspirations, motivations and influences that can make me a better artist. I have discovered that American history has a lot of influential pioneers in the art world. My admiration of the American Illustration masters like Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, and N.C. Wyeth, and many more, who were pioneers in their time, have inspired me through my arts. In my illustration process I learned to take an actual personal experience and translate it into my own artistic language. I was very pleased with my work during my education at Ringling and believe this is a great starting point to my career as an editorial illustrator. I hope that my artistic inner voice and education, and continuing self education will lead me to become one of the great masters of my time. Brandi Strickland I grew up in small town North Carolina, surrounded by sandy fields, farms and country. I played outside a lot, built things in my grandpa’s shop, and turned everything into make-believe. I was interested in everything and had a new ‘what I want to be when I grow up’ every week. Art is the only thing broad enough to hold all my interests under one roof. I can explore nature, science, literature, psychology, communication, and spirituality, all in a days work. Currently I live in Charlotte, NC, and I graduated from Queens University in May of 2007 with a B.A. in Art.
My mixed media work is an investigation of technique. I love working in layers and building up colors and textures. Lately I’ve been obsessed by pattern and repetition, so the art has become increasingly detailed. Recognizable forms are usually present, referencing the natural and scientific world. What inspired you to create artwork & design? All of us Bears have been creatively expressive since we were quite young, with one of the older Bears among us starting as early as three or four (with incredibly detailed accounts of sweeping battle and carnage - somewhat disconcerting when placed within the context of his currently being a clinical counselor) and the others beginning at varying points throughout their youth. Music in its wide array has also always served as an instigator of creativity for us, with almost all of us entering into the digital world of artistry due to interest in designing merchandise, posters, and album layouts for bands. Has your brand image & story shaped the images you create, or do the images come first?
Three Bears Design is a creative collaborative that tends to call mid-Ohio “home� (while also shifting between Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). With intentional focus upon the relational process of creative expression, the individuals who make up the core of Three Bears believe that friendship is as inherently vital to the creative process as artistic ability is. They really are friendly folks and have shared a little about themselves with us.
Our back-story as a creative collaborative, replete with sundry tales of woodland tomfoolery, many a bee sting, and the ironfisted management & professional representation of Ms. Goldenlocks - she’s who insisted upon many a press release featuring we ordinarily peaceful Bears in aggressive interplay with weapons, monsters, and the like - such silliness) has been fashioned more as playful support for a moniker (Three Bears Design) than as skeleton or base structure for the content & theme of our creative output. While there is certainly a consistency to what we create (i.e. attention to detail & a handmade, relational ethos), each piece is distinctly tailored to meet the needs of the friends we make through this venture.
