Editor's Letter

welcome September 15 is right around the corner and we are very excited that you can share this special moment with us in Hawaii.

We are so happy you can make it to our celebrations in Hawaii! We have put together this magazine where you will find all the information that you'll need for the wedding: what to expect, how to get there, where to stay. There are also ideas about what to do in the area if you have a few days before or after the wedding. Finally, you'll also find some fun tidbits about us and our perceptions of some key moments in the relationship - some heartfelt, some tongue-in-cheek and all in good fun. We hope you enjoy reading this magazine and find the guide useful as you plan your trip.

How did you meet? Her: I had no intention to date anybody, I was coming from a somewhat difficult break-up and I was really enjoying my life as a single and free woman. I guess someone up there had different plans for me.

Him: My friend Henry had invited me to a party that he had organized for his 27th birthday. That afternoon, I had a late basketball game and my plan was to go to Henry's apartment right after the game, take a shower at his place and change. As I was taking my shower, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten my clean change of clothes at home. So unfortunately, I had to make do with Henry's clothing - for those of you that don't know him, he is kind of bigger and taller me and not necessarily the most stylish guy I know (sorry dude). So there I was, in oversized jeans, red sneakers, lumberjack green shirt - not exactly dress to impress! Anyways, I went to the party pretty amused at my situation and saw Alice. She was really pretty and most importantly, she looked friendly and I desperately needed to talk to someone friendly.

My coworker Henry had invited me to his birthday party. At the party, as I was leaving the group of people I was talking to, to get a drink, I saw this guy walking towards me and he immediately caught my attention. He had a pretty yet embarrassed smile, you could tell that he was pretty cute but he had such an AWFUL sense of style! I mean, red sneakers and lumberjack green shirt it wasn't even Christmas! Style aside, he seemed really friendly and we spent the rest of the evening chatting- we actually talked a lot about his "situation" and had a good laugh about it.

What was your first date like? Him: Since I work in the restaurant industry, I did not want our first date to be lunch or dinner but something different. She had told me that she liked the outdoors so we went hiking in the Cleveland National Forests not too far from San Diego where we live. I had prepared a gourmet picnic for lunch, the weather was cooperating and we really enjoyed our day. Well at least I did, did you? Her: Yeah, that was a great first date. I was glad and reassured to see that you could dress nicely (laugh). I was also very impressed with the 3-star Michelin picnic that you had prepared for us. As I said before, I wasn't really interested in dating anybody at the time but Paul was so charming and I felt so happy in his comforting presence that I was into him very quickly. Him: For me, I think it was almost love at first sight but I did not want to rush things too quickly.

I think it was almost love at first sight How did he propose? Her: It was May 2011 and we were on vacation in Mexico, 2 hours south of Cancun. We both love this place because it is secluded, still unspoiled and the beach is so beautiful. One evening, we were talking on the beach waiting for the sunset, Paul was playing with the sand when all of sudden he dug out this beautiful pink nacre shell. We both got very excited but not for the same reasons though. I have to confess, I did not suspect a thing and then l saw this beautiful ring fall out of the shell like magic. I will always remember that moment.

alice & paul close up How did he propose? (Cont'd)

Paul is very romantic and very calm, yet he is very determined

Him: I knew Alice was the one for me and when we planned our vacation in Mexico I thought it would be the perfect place to propose. For the proposal, I had a couple of ideas but I really liked the shell idea because I knew it would be a real surprise and it was romantic as well. The preparation though was a bit challenging and stressful. While Alice was taking her shower late in the afternoon, I took the shell and the ring and returned to the beach, made sure that no one was looking at me and burried the shell and the ring in the sand. I then marked the place with a big stone and a piece of wood to make sure I could identify the spot. I am glad that everything went well because when I think about it, it was a bit risky and a few things could have gone wrong.

I didn't feel like going out, I would spend hours watching House Hunters International on HGTV. These stories of people that leave their current obligations, jobs, everything to start a new life in a different country was so inspiring. I would have never thought that it would happen to me a couple of months later. What are the highlights of when you were dating? Her: For me, it's when I met his parents because I was pretty nervous about it but I really felt accepted and at ease immediately. And I'm not saying this just because your parents are going to read this magazine, I promise! Him: I have wonderful memories of our vacation in Mexico, but I will always remember the first time you told me "I love you" because you made me wait a couple of weeks.

What's the plan for the honeymoon? Her: We just want to explore Hawaii and its different islands because that's where we are going to settle in a couple of weeks. It is very exciting to truly discover where we are going to live. I remember when I was single and

I will always remember the first time you told me I love you Alice, what is the one thing you like the most about him? Paul is very romantic and very calm, yet he is very determined. He has been working on his B&B project for some time and he saved every penny patiently and now it is about to become a reality here in Hawaii. I really admire his persistence. Paul, what is the one thing you like the most about her? Alice doesn't really have plans, she embraces life and opportunities as they come. I really like that about her because she is never afraid of new adventures or experiences that are outside the norm or outside her comfort zone. What does happiness look like for you?

What is the number one thing on your To Do List when you return from your honeymoon? Both: We just bought this charming property in Maui that we need to turn into a functional B&B. It is very exciting but also a lot of work. We need to build more rooms, hire staff and start the marketing. Our plan is to be ready by end of the year.

Her: Managing our small business, spending some time together and with our children some day. Being close to nature because we love to spend most of our time outdoors. Him: If things work out well in Hawaii, we'll be very lucky because we'll be living in a beautiful environment, we will be able enjoy each other's company every day and we will have enough room to welcome family and friends any time. Happiness might be a journey but this is a good start!

GROOMSMEN

groomsMAN Paul Martin

Paul is my brother; we have always been very close and share the same passion for baseball and great burgers. We have always done everything together and it is no surprise that we will get married the same year.

BEST MAN Todd

groomsMAN James O'Sullivan

Restaurant Owner, living in San Diego CA

Love: The Gaslamp Quarter and the food at my restaurant

Hate: The fact that my best buddy is leaving me for Hawaii

James is my future brother in law and the smartest guy I know. He is also the worse dancer I know: watch out for his moves on the dance floor. His wacky arms can be dangerous.

groomsMAN Brad Burton

Brad is also a former roommate and teammate. Now that our crazy college years are over, we love spending time with Brad and his family in Lake Tahoe during the summers.

BEST MAN Marc Nelson

groomsMAN Matt Parker

Matt is another friend from college. Matt probably had the best time during my bachelor's party, go find him during the wedding and ask him why, I guarantee, you'll laugh.

Marc and I have been friends for almost 20 years. We grew up in the same neighborhood and bonded over playing endless video games every weekend. I feel fortunate that we were able to keep such a grea t and old friendship Marc.

the top 5 maui Destinations Maui has been voted "Best Island" by readers of Conde Nast Traveler for 17 years and we're sure you will love it as much as we do. Here are some restaurant recommendations and ideas about what to do if you have a few days before or after the wedding. One visit and it's easy to see why Maui is called The Magic Isle.
