As one close friend admitted this week, “Robert was a great dealer but not a naturally good business man; he was never precious or selfindulgent. He had an extraordinary type of integrity, told the truth and was never apologetic about who he was. He had an innocent heart, an intelligent mind and a fantastic sense of fair play”.

Robert was totally self-taught about antique artefacts, objects d’art and collectables. He had a diverse and eclectic interest in objects from across the globe, and was “responsive to the spirit of an object more than the academic importance of it; he seemed to have a sensitivity for things”.

wines & spirits Post sale report 7/9/18 The Wines & Spirits auction on Friday 7 September got corks popping when a sought after bottle of vintage champagne sold for £2,000. The 1952 Krug Champagne Private Cuvee attracted numerous online bidders alongside a room full of keen clients in the Waveney Room. A bottle of Macallan 18 year single Highland Malt Scotch whisky, distilled 1977, also exceeded the estimate fetching £1,500. Lisa West, sale organiser and auctioneer, said:“You don’t often see this vintage Krug and the bottle was in really good condition. It could either be a collector or someone who wants it to drink for a special occasion. “We weren’t expecting the Macallan to sell for that price, but we had interest on the internet. Perhaps it was just missing from someone’s collection.”

The MGB By Andre Ling The MGB was first thought up back in 1958 by Syd Enever and came to life as a replacement for the MGA in 1962. This popular two seater sports car was a staple of the British Leyland forecourt for nearly 20 years. The enhanced MGBGT first went into manufacture in 1965 before both models ceased production in 1980. MG was founded by Cecil Kimber in the 1920’s and went on to be one of the best loved sports car manufacturers until its demise under the ownership of Leyland in 1980.

After a period of being left in the pits,The Rover Group revived the MG in 1989 with launch of the MGRV8. Yet, even with the updated V8 engine proved that the sports car buying public had fallen out of love with the marque.

With items ranging from an Edwardian confirmation dress to a modern vintage Alexander McQueen coat, circa 1990’s, the Vintage Fashion and Furnishings sale is sure to be an enthralling and eclectic one. The McQueen coat is a particularly wearable piece. After founding his own award-winning label in 1992 and working for Givenchy during the late nineties, McQueen’s collections continue to honour his name by exhibiting a timeless sophistication. The high-class tailoring of the men’s Crombie coat encapsulates such timelessness, with the classic cream colour ensuring wearability and elegance whatever the occasion.

by Eloise Shiner

An equally sophisticated women’s piece can be found in a 1950’s pleated skirt and matching suit jacket. Featuring it’s original label from Lillywhites Piccadilly - a brand historically eminent within the world of sportswear - the skirt suit is a lightweight silk piece with a green, floral design that emanates spring time, and which is ideal for warmer evenings. Although perhaps not suitable for sports, the jacket and skirt may be worn together for a formal occasion, but may serve equally well when worn separately for a more casual situation. As well as clothing, the sale includes an assortment of footwear from far-flung eras and places: from a 70’s style pair of 3½ inch, glitter plastic platforms, to a pair of Oriental embroidered shoes. Of Eastern origin, the shoes are of a slipper style but with soles thick enough to be worn outside. They are fit for a child and can be slipped easily on and off the foot. They feature a roughly 2cm gap at the heel of the shoe, overlaid with a ladder of thread so that the shoe may be widened slightly if needed. The extravagant needlework exhibits an intricate and beautifully designed wreath of flowers around the sides of the shoe and across the low vamp, which culminates sleekly to a raised point. The pastel green base and soft pink floral design complement each other to create an ornate piece of art, whether worn or displayed. In regards to accessories, a particular piece to pay attention

to would be an Hermès scarf. Still in its original box, the scarf is one-sided and depicts an intricately symmetrical design. It is 89x89 cm and a sense of congruence runs throughout it. Overlapping panels of flowers and wreaths form a grid shape in a crisp off-white colour against a pale yellow background, framed by a similar border in yellow and red. Dispersed amongst the labyrinthine design are various, brightly coloured butterflies, beetles and dragonflies, enhancing the opulence of the scarf overall. This exquisite silk scarf is entitled ‘Joyaux de l’ètè’ (jewels of summer) and was designed by French artist, Antoine de Jacquelot in the mid 1990s.
