Samantha Dunne of Dunne with Style took a fresh spin on a classic favorite and cleverly added a whimsical and pretty twist on a circus theme to celebrate her own daugther’s birthday. Circus animals were ‘prettied’ up with the addition of frills and ruffles. The classic blue and red were replaced by a more feminine color palette of mint and peach.

The most amazing “note in a bottle” invitations steered all of the guests in the right direction for the big day! Full of fun designs and bold colors, this pirate half of the party boasts the characteristic red, white, and black stripes, flanked by the dreaded skull and crossbones that warn of pirates ahead. The tattered banner accentuates the theme perfectly and gives the feel of life on the rough seas. The fisherman’s net sets the tablescape and catches the essence of adventure. To help the party pirates set sail, they enjoyed cupcakes and a custom hook and map cake. It’s easy to see that this pirate has style by the gold cufflink on the shirt! Coin-sized pirate cookies provide the perfect mini morsels of goodness. In keeping with the spirit of the adventure, the decor includes pirate ships of varying sizes, personalized treasure chest favor boxes and pirate treasure bars scattered about the table.

They are such sweet creatures that you absolutely have to have Magical Chocolates! Beautiful butterflies flit about the table, resting amongst the flower cupcakes . Coordinating pixie dress favor boxes for the enchanting little ladies; it’s a perfect complement to the rough and tumble pirate! Set sail and enjoy the world of both adventure and fantasy!

A BIG XII
Football Party
Styling & Photography: Hello Love Designs
54 * Twinkle Twinkle Little Party Magazine
Want to score big with a boy’s birthday party? You can never go wrong with football! Hello Love Designs planned this amazing Big 12 fete to celebrate her son turning the big 1-2! This party is simple, but beautifully executed, and universal being that it isn’t focused on a specific team. Great use of generic colors of the game, with green for the turf, black and white for the referee uniforms, and brown for the football itself. For party touchdowns all around, try this simple party that’s sure to be a winner!

“We served traditional football game day treats such as popcorn and peanuts and included a tailgate-style cooler full of bottled root beers. I substituted a roll of white festooning garland to give the illusion of ice in the cooler. Popcorn was served in simple brown cups, embellished with green and white striped washi tape. Simple green cake pops had football candy toppers added to them to fit in with the theme, and were displayed in empty soda bottles. Making our children’s birthday cakes is a family tradition, so my husband baked and decorated the cake to look like a real football and it was the hit of the party! Everything was served on football plates and green chargers, along with coordinating utensils, straws and striped napkins, says Jeniffer Hill of Hello Love Designs.

Cinnamon Cake with Sweet Potato Filling by: Lucia Borges of Lulu’s Sweet Secrets (adapted from marthastewart.com) Makes one 8-inch round layer cake 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, room temperature, plus more for pans All-purpose flour, for pans 1 3/4 cups cake flour (not self-rising) 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed light-brown sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup sour cream Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter two 8-inch round cake pans; line with parchment-paper rounds. Butter parchment paper and lightly dust pans with all-purpose flour, shaking out excess. In a large bowl, sift together cake flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and both sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat until just incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as necessary. Reduce speed to low; add flour mixture in three additions, alternating with sour cream and beginning and ending with flour mixture, scraping down sides of bowl as necessary. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Set pan on a wire rack to cool for at least 20 minutes before loosening sides of cake from pan and inverting onto a wire rack. Remove parchment paper and reinvert; let cool completely.
Sweet Potato Cream 1 medium sweet potato 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 can evaporated milk fresh ground nutmeg 1 tablespoon corn starch Cook the sweet potato in water and puree until smooth. Pour the condensed milk into a medium saucepan and place over medium heat. Add the sweet potato puree, nutmeg, evaporated milk and corn starch. Stir the mixture until it starts to show the bottom of the pan when you scrape it with a spoon. As you scrape the bottom of pan with the spoon, the mixture should be thick enough to show you the bottom the pan for a couple of seconds before the mixture levels out again. Pour the mixture in a bowl and leave aside to cool. Place it in the fridge until decoration.

A Little Red Riding Hood Picnic Styling & Concept: – Ivy & Oak Events / Photography: Katie Toland Photography Written by: Samantha Dunne
74 * Twinkle Twinkle Little Party Magazine
“Once she gave her a little riding hood of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called ‘Little Red Riding Hood.” Set amongst a backdrop of a mystical pine forest we set up an impromptu picnic for our own ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ ‘Good day, Little Red Riding Hood,’ said the wolf ‘Thank you kindly, wolf.’ ‘Whither away so early, Little Red Riding Hood?’ ‘To my grandmother’s.’ We love that traditional fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood have layers that lead it to be appealing to both children and adults alike and we aimed to recreate this within our shoot. We incorporated the apple as a motif throughout our shoot, to symbolize the seductive nature of the wolf in the story but also presented it in the sweetest ‘apple pops’ that any child would happily bite into. “‘See, Little Red Riding Hood, how pretty the flowers are about here why do you not look round?’ So she ran from the path into the woods to look for flowers. And whenever she had picked one, she fancied that she saw a still prettier one farther on, and ran after it, and so got deeper and deeper into the woods.”
