THE BRIDAL PARTY:
6
Weddings are meant to be witnessed, to be shared, and most importantly to be celebrated. Your best friends and closest family are given the honor of getting the front row seats as your witnesses and given the distinguised title of “bridal party.” Let’s be honest, if the title was an accurate job description it would sound more like “bridal laborer” or “yes-men and women to the bride and groom.” Or in some very unfortunate scenarios, even “poorly dressed prom queen wannabes.” Throwing the word party in there sure makes it sound more appealing and, well, fun. Negative connotations aside, being a member of a bridal party should be fun and most importantly memorable. Your friends and family are here not only sharing in this meaningful day with you, but are in it for the long haul as you share your lives together. So honor them, shower them with gifts of thanks, and please, dress them well. We dedicate this issue to the bridal party. From tips on how to dress your ‘maids to match your style in Maiden Style (page 35) to the most thoughtful bridal party gifts for the girls, guys and kids in your wedding (The Mostest, page 13). Our bridal party checklist on page 10 will help both the bride and her Inner Circle accomplish each pressing task, while this issue’s Maps story will help bridesmaids Plan a Bach She’ll Never forget (page 42). We would also like to mention that while we were putting the finishing touches on this issue, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of marriage equality. We are so honored that we are a part of the wonderful wedding world during this historic and joyful time. #LoveWins! Party on,

FÊTE-A-TÊTE
Lizzie and Katie founded Fête-a-Tête (feteatete.com), an online magazine about hosting and partying in New York City, mostly because they wanted to bring back the dinner party, but also to update it. They’re all about busting out grandma’s china, and they don’t feel like you need any excuse to celebrate. Hence, their favorite hashtag, #everynightaparty. Fête-a-Tête’s curated content provides tips, inspiration, advice from experts, and spotlights on services and products to help at-home chefs, hostesses, and party animals of every skill level breathe more life into their parties, and more party into their lives! Sign up for their weekly newsletter at feteatete.com and follow them on Instagram @feteatete
Be the hostess with the mostest with these tips from Fête-a-Tête: Give yourself a break. Make some things ahead that can be served at room temperature or serve your favorite store bought dessert. You don't have to do it all to be a super hostess.
Always have way too much food and booze. Everyone feels more welcome to indulge when there's no question about whether there's enough to go around.
Chill out. The host sets the tone for the party. If you pour yourself a drink, relax and enjoy yourself, your guests will too. P.S. The Fête girls style a boho engagement party on p.54!
THE BACH, INC.
After graduating from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, Joanne Barken soon found herself attending a lot of weddings. With her passion for the hospitality industry, friends frequently asked her for ideas for the perfect bar, restaurant, or day spa for hosting a bachelorette party. Realizing that a lot of women needed help coordinating a last-night-as-a-single-lady party, Joanne launched The Bach (thebach.com). Eliminating the stress of bachelorette party planning, The Bach features the top places to play, dine, party and relax in cities across the U.S. and select international destinations.

There's nothing that gets us more excited than clicking through photos from real weddings, engagement parties, bridal showers and other pre-and post-wedding parties. The details, the decor, and of course the dress are what we love seeing and sharing! If you'd like to send us your wedding or celebration photos, please complete our real wedding form. We accept submissions from brides, grooms, planners and photographers. And while our focus is on New York City - all five boroughs - our reach isn't limited to the city limits. We want to hear about engagements and weddings across the tri-state area: Long Island and the Hamptons, Westchester and the HudsonValley, Connecticut and New Jersey. Questions? The Inner Circle
As the bride and groom's closest friends and family, it's your job to help execute their vision - within reason - and plan some unforgettable parties in their honor. Bridesmaids may be asked to comment on the bride's Pinterest boards and share in her excitement over details large and small. Attend wedding dress shopping appointments, if asked, and be supportive if the bride says yes to a dress you wouldn't. Groomsmen are off the hook until the bride (and groom) need your suit or tux measurements either over email or in person. Bridesmaid dress shopping can be quite the ordeal. Look online for styles you like and dedicate a full day or weekend to finding the one.
Does the bride consider you crafty? Be warned that your DIY skills may come in handy if she's making favors, programs or other details. Bring some wine over and make a night of it.

Bridal showers can be as detail oriented as the wedding so start planning 4 or 5 months before the wedding. Find out who is co-hosting (are the moms contributing?), what the budget is, and how many people are on the guest list. Not sure what style shower to throw? Here are some ideas.
p. 27
Bachelor and bachelorette parties can be held close to home or at a destination. Begin discussing plans a few months before the party date, which should be between 6 and 2 weeks before the wedding. For bridesmaids planning a relaxed or wild weekend in the city, Hamptons or suburbs, check out these hot spots.
Kids can have their own flower girl dress or ring bearer suit shopping day, complete with a kid-friendly meal or activity. The Plaza's Palm Court serves up a chic Eloise Tea for little ladies, while the young men may enjoy super-sized sundaes at Serendipity 3. Bridesmaids are not planners. You can ask them to help stuff invites or alphabetize escort cards, but planning tasks should be minimal. If you need more help hire a professional. Thank everyone in the bridal party with something each person would appreciate, and include a personal note too. Here are some ideas they may like. 10

Moms should wait to shop for their mother-of-the-bride and groom gowns until after the bride has picked hers. Discuss the formality of the wedding and dress colors so they complement the rest of the bridal party.

TO HAVE & TO HOLD
bouquets by ovando. photo by brian dorsey studios
Give your attendants a floral accessory they’ll be happy to carry, or wear, down the aisle
Bridesmaids wearing dresses in different colors should carry monochromatic and uniform bouquets to create a cohesive look.
Some brides choose bouquets that blend with the color of their bridesmaids’ gowns, others choose a hue that will pop against their 'maids’ attire. No matter what colors you pick, and for that matter, what blooms, make sure everyone in your bridal party has something that ties them all together – whether it’s a color, a flower or an element in the wrap. You want a coordinated look, and with that, beauty will come naturally.

Multiple colors or monochromatic? One type of bloom or many? The possibilities for bridesmaid bouquets are endless.
1 This monochromatic bouquet of roses in mauve was the perfect accompaniment to the formal floor-length deeper-hued purple bridesmaid dresses. To coordinate with the bride’s preppy decor at this springtime outdoor affair, 'maids carried peonies, roses, spray roses, garden roses, baby green hydrangea, dianthus and dusty miller in pale greens, pinks, and white shades from Bride & Blossom, which were striking against the 'maids’ solid gowns. how to pick stylish dresses for your bridesmaids
t’s somewhat rare to hear a bride, or a bridesmaid for that matter, exclaim “I can’t wait to go bridesmaid dress shopping!” For starters, it’s not about the bride and unless you are a personal fashion stylist, not many are in the know on how to shop for someone else. Luckily, cookie-cutter styles went out of style a while ago, and varying silhouettes, cuts and shades of color are now the norm. But according to bridal stylist Jacqueline Weppner of Merci New York, you should only vary the cut or the color, not both. “The trick is to not go overboard and risk looking messy or uncurated. If you like the idea of switching up silhouettes to suit your bridesmaids' varying body types then make sure the fabric type and color of the dresses are consistent. If you want your bridesmaids to wear different colors then try a collection of muted tones, think dusty pastels. I personally like 'the ombre effect,' a palette of coral, peach and pink along the same color saturation spectrum."
As far as size, or how many BFFs a bride should include in her big day, it seems the trend is to avoid the safe middle ground. That’s right, the old adages of bigger is better and quality over quantity can be applied. The larger (and we mean larger) bridal party is very popular in younger brides and those getting married in the Hamptons and Connecticut, after all wide open spaces allow for more friends. Brides who choose to have a single attendant, such as their sister, are having their weddings in the city or Europe. Bridal stylist Maradee Wahl says the scale of the wedding should influence the bridal party size. “The bridal party size should reflect the formality and scale of the wedding itself. At an intimate dinner party with close family and friends, the bride’s mom or sister can stand up for her as witness, while at a wedding entertaining 300 guests, a large party of ten or more family and friends looks just right!” Whatever size, cut or color path you choose, there are more options for the 'maids than ever before.

Everyone talks about the “Middleton” effect in bridal for how the Duchess influenced bridal gown trends, but she had an impact on bridesmaids too, especially maid of honors. Many brides are choosing to skip the traditional look for their MOH and treat her to a pared down wedding gown in a shade of white or ivory. This works for brides who are only having one attendant and for those with large parties who want their MOH to feel extra special. Architectural and simple silhouettes are perfect for this pairing, and of course the bride's dress needs to be over the top!

The Maid of Honor's dress was the most ornate of the group... This vibe was so chic, elegant and totally appropriate for a formal New York City wedding.”

Before you begin booking venues, establish a budget all of the bridesmaids can afford. Keep in mind there are lots of ways you can lower costs without cutting down on the fun. For example, planning a relaxing afternoon at your hotel pool instead of booking a private boat ride is a great way to soak up the sun without incurring additional costs.
Whether you decide to incorporate a fun theme, or make DIY party decorations, brides love when their bridesmaids add a unique twist to their bachelorette party. It can be as simple as coming up with a fun hashtag or cute party favors.

HOW ONE SISTER TOASTED THE BRIDE AT A ROOFTOP BRIDAL SHOWER photography by holly haffner 40

real parties When Stacy Pillsdorf was asked to be matron-of-honor for her sister Julie's wedding, she knew that one of her many to-do's would be to host the bridal shower. The contemporary affair, co-hosted by the sisters' aunt, was held at The Rooftop at The NoMad and inspired by the bride's interests and tastes. Combining the hotel's grand European style with an elegant color palette of white, grey, pinks, green and burgundy, the tone of the party was set: playful and romantic. The maid-of-honor sent guests the Diamond Chalkboard bridal shower invitation from Minted, and asked that they bring a bottle of wine for the newlyweds for a personalized shower activity she was sure her sister and future brother-in-law would love.

real parties Keeping with bridal shower tradition, Stacy planned a number of activities, including How Well Do You Know the Couple? and one that spoke to the bride and groom's love of wine. Each guest named the bottle they brought with a creative title, and were encouraged to write a message on a hang tag explaining when Julie and Michael should drink that particular bottle. Clever titles included Fat Bastard (to open when he is behaving like one) and Layer Cake (to open on their first anniversary). After enjoying a love-themed cake from Sweet Grace, guests were given lavender and rosemary scented sugar scrub, labeled From Julie's shower to yours, to take home as a party favor, a nod to the bride's love of body lotions and potions. Julie and Michael will have just gotten hitched when this goes to press, and we can't wait to see their wedding photos! Stay tuned....

For atmosphere, there’s nothing more magical than candles. You cannot have too many. We love the height of these mixed with tons of votives. There’s no such thing as too much. Denby candle holders, range from $12.95 to $19.95, crateandbarrel.com.
The world of weddings and the parties that surround them has changed for the better! Cookie-cutter parties are for cookie-cutter people and come on, you don’t have any friends like that. So, when we were asked to dream up the perfect summer engagement party for our BFF, we thought, “Let’s go Boho.” The vibe perfectly embodies the laid-back lavishness of summer; we picture this going down on a rooftop at dusk.
