When we ventured out to create Twirl Weddings, we knew we wanted to achieve two objectives: to create a great website that used our combined expertise and experience in the world of luxury weddings and for it to have a super local focus so that it could appeal to real brides planning a wedding in their area. Simple enough, right? But content that is updated daily is light, quick, vetted but more off-the-cuff. The Twirl List and our site franchises provide great vendors and city locales, but we knew our brides would need more. More inspiration, more detail, more of the more. So we conceived The Book. The Book is what we would want in a bridal magazine, but digital. You can flip through the pages for inspiration or you can spend an hour or two reading it cover to cover just like a traditional magazine. The best part is that each page is clickable. Like that gown in our fashion feature Where to Wear? Click on it and it will take you to the designer. Need more details on the venue we perfectly paired with it? A click will take you to their site for the full 411. A full dose of inspiration, with a helping of info to back it up. The Book allows us to be more focused. This, our first issue, is The Engagement Issue. We figured what better way for us to kick off Twirl than by celebrating engagements – yours and ours. We are hoping that we will be together every step of the way. So share with us as we are with you. Let us know what you think of The Book through social media using #TwirlEngagement.
Let's Celebrate! The Twirl Girls

There's nothing that gets us more excited than clicking through photos from real weddings, engagement parties, bridal showers and other pre- and post-wedding parties. The details, the decor, and of course the dress are what we love seeing and sharing!
And while our focus is on New York City - all five boroughs - our reach isn't limited to the city limits. We want to hear about engagements and weddings across the tri-state area: Long Island and the Hamptons, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, Connecticut and New Jersey. Questions? Email us at hello@twirlweddings.com

KRISTEN HARTLEY
This gal's passion for food is eclipsed only by her sense of humor. Because if she wasn't bitter, she'd have no taste at all! After almost 17 years writing and producing lifestyle content for tv, commercials and web she's learned a little and eaten a lot. Kristen has had the pleasure of featuring top chefs such as Eric Rippert, Gavin Kaysen, Marc Forgione, Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse, Michele Richard, and Dan Kluger. In addition to her passion for all things culinary, she's produced for brands such as Joanthan Adler, American Express, Macy's, and L'Oréal. In her nonexistent spare time, she's traded in cooking elaborate meals and going to restaurant openings for trying out new recipes on her favorite and harshest critic: her 17-month-old son.

We have Allan Zepeda to thank for our fab editor's letter photo, and the Feast for the Senses engagement party on page 46. Allan, while based in New York and San Francisco, has shot weddings across the country and around the globe, including Europe, the Caribbean and Central America. We love the way he captures the emotions of the day, along with the romance, and of course all the details, but we’re not the only ones. Last year Allan shot the wedding of Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita and his work is routinely featured in all of our favorite bridal mags. When he’s not shooting a wedding, chances are Allan is in an exotic location or a five star restaurant celebrating with friends. The best way to keep track of him? Follow his Instagram feed!
KELLY ASHWORTH, KELLY ASHWORTH DESIGN
We have genius designer Kelly Ashworth to thank for the layout of both The Book and TwirlWeddings.com. A graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Advertising, Kelly worked at WB Doner and several boutique agencies before opening Kelly Ashworth Design in 2004. In addition to branding, web design and wedding stationery projects, Kelly enjoys spending days with her two daughters, date nights with her husband, and traveling the world.
CHRISTIAN OTH, CHRISTIAN OTH STUDIO
When you look at one of Christian Oth’s photos, you can absorb the emotion of an entire wedding from a single image. So when searching for the perfect shot for our first cover, we knew exactly who to go to. Christian and his top notch roster of photographers at Christian Oth Studio know every venue and picturesque spot in New York City, so whether it’s for your wedding or your engagement portraits (see Christian’s engagement photo tips on page 26), you will be in very good hands. Christian opened the studio in 2005 and countless weddings around the world and professional accolades later, including being named one of the ten best wedding photographers in the world by American Photo, he continues to redefine the art of wedding photography.

You said Yes! Now What? YOUR FIRST TO-DO'S WHETHER YOU'RE GETTING MARRIED HOME OR ABROAD
If you haven't already, add your engagement ring to your homeowner's insurance policy. It's okay to make your secret wedding boards public now, so pin away! Pick up copies of the latest wedding magazines on newsstands. We recommend Martha Stewart Weddings for details and BRIDES for fashion inspiration. And if you can get your hands on it, WedLuxe out of Canada has beautiful decor ideas. Have the in-laws meet for dinner even if they've met before. Not sure where to take them? Make a reservation at one of these establishments. Decide on the wedding's budget. Ask mom and dad if they'll be contributing and find out if there are any strings attached if they are.
p.43
If you're having an engagement party make sure to register for gifts at two or three stores. Don't think you need anything? Do you already have these must-haves? Maybe your BFFs already know, but to be sure and as a keepsake, ask each one to be your bridesmaid with a personal note.
p.62
Is a destination wedding in the cards? Fly off to wherever you wish to wed and find out if the locale is right for you, your guests, and any senior relatives who must attend. (Can granny make the long flight? Will the grounds accommodate grandpa's wheelchair?) Pick a date, book a place, and then make bridal salon appointments to shop for the one. Get the most out of the day with one of Twirl New York's curated shopping guides. Now that you know the where and when, order save-the-date cards to let your guests know, and create a wedding website or app for more need-to-know info.
p.20
Start meeting with recommended vendors (see the Twirl List for our picks) and hire those who see your vision and can bring it to life. After hiring your photographer, schedule an engagement portrait shoot for some fun candids of the two of you to use on your save the date, wedding website and holiday card.
p.23 10
And by the way, congratulations! WINTER 2015

Wish List
Registering for your wedding is like making your wish list for Santa, filled with all the toys you’ve ever wanted to play with. But this time, instead of asking for a doll or train set, you’re asking for an espresso machine, service for twelve and a Dyson vacuum. Jung Lee in NoMad offers couples a new take on registering where you’ll work with a designer to create a customized list that reflects your day-to-day living. The store offers designer products for dining, entertaining, and decorating your home, with the option to mix and match patterns within their design vignettes to coordinate with what you already own or may inherit. 25 West 29th Street at Broadway, (212) 257-5655, jungleeny.com

Couples are often nervous, so it's important to take a relaxed approach, and simply have a walk and talk through an area of their choice. We recommend brides wear their favorite outfit that they feel best in. If you wear something new and uncomfortable, you will look uncomfortable in your photos. Good footwear is also essential. You'll be walking around a lot and you don't want to be hobbling by the end. CRAIG PAULSON, CRAIG PAULSON PHOTOGRAPHY

If you can't find the ideal location, pick an activity. Doing things like hiking, cooking, skating, working out, or riding bikes can make your session feel more relaxed. LEIGH ANNA THOMPSON, MOSS + ISAAC
The location doesn't have to be complicated or grand. Sometimes Time Square or the Brooklyn Bridge makes sense, but a location can be as simple as your home, the place where you got engaged, your favorite cafe, or a quiet path in the park. LEIGH ANNA THOMPSON, MOSS + ISAAC

I would suggest guys go to the shoot with an open mind and have fun, because you will always treasure great images of this time in your life. For the ladies, don’t overdo your makeup or drastically change your hairstyle, because if you do, you most likely, will not like the look of the images. ANDY MARCUS, FRED MARCUS STUDIO
If your wedding is a year away pick your favorite season to take your engagement portraits. Fall and spring photograph best and the temperature outdoors is not uncomfortable. I just photographed a couple who wanted their photos in the snow. They came out great, but it was a little uncomfortable for everyone.
TWIRL TIP
For couples planning to submit an announcement to The Times, take a photo with your heads close together and eyebrows on the same level with plenty of space at the sides and above your heads. For complete submission instructions, click here.

Most people need a little "warm up" in order to get used to the camera, so I always start out with walking shots where the couple tends to be more engaged with each other. It's also great to put subjects into a natural situation or anything that makes them less conscious of the camera.

TWIRL TIPS: PARENTAL GUIDANCE
Don't assume the folks are picking up the check, especially if you invited everyone and made the reservation. If Dad or Mom ask for the bill then they're obviously treating, but if dessert has been cleared and no one has waived the waiter over it's time to take out the Amex. Remember what Capt. Jack Sparrow said, and "wait for the opportune moment" before you bring up who pays for which parts of the wedding. If this is the first time all the parents are meeting you may want to enjoy a friendly get together and break out your spreadsheets at another occasion. Couples who are concerned that their parents may not hit it off should take a page from the Downton Abbey playbook and enjoy cocktails before dinner so everyone can loosen up before dinner is served. Celebrating your engagement with a formal meeting of the folks should be arranged even if your parents have met before. And while we say "formal meeting" that could mean a laid-back brunch, casual backyard barbeque, wine tasting, or any other setting that involves food and drinks so everyone can kvell over the happy news. A FEAST FOR THE SENSES morocco meets hamptons chic

engagement parties
To celebrate their engagement, friend’s of the couple hosted an engagement party at their home in Sagaponack. Working with their event planner and designer, Sofia Crokos, the open field was decked out with a white tent and furniture accented with bright orange, bold blues and shimmering gold details. “We wanted to incorporate elaborate, exotic textures juxtaposed against a lush greenery environment,” Sofia explains. Guests could lounge under the starry sky or the sparkling crystal chandeliers and gold and mirrored stars adorning the tent’s draped ceiling. Comfy white lounges were set up in the tent and the surrounding area with tangerine pillows for guests to mix and mingle, and toast to the future newlyweds.

WINTER 2015
engagement parties
You want that “cool” downtown setting for all of your friends. Something that feels like the places you hang out at after work or on Saturday nights. Your parents, and his, are looking for a more “uptown” location. A venue that they feel comfortable inviting their friends to, where they won’t feel old and the address isn’t scary. For Lexi and Jordan, and their wedding and event designer Lindsay Landman, the ideal venue to satisfy everyone was The Roof at the Viceroy New York on West 57th Street. Offering an outdoor terrace with views of Central Park and a luxe lounge designed by the firm Roman and Williams, everyone was happy.

Lindsay created a palette of black, white and gold to complement the venue’s wood and leather decor, setting the scene for a warm and inviting space. The brown leather couches were accented with pillows in the shades of the party’s palette to give the feel of a luxe home interior.

For the menu, guests dined on various bite-sized apps, including hay-aged pecorino toast with ricotta and truffle honey, crab croquettes with curry mayo, and for dessert mini-ice cream sundaes - a favorite of the groom and his dad. Love-themed cocktails were served up as the party’s signature drinks.
As guests left at the end of the night, they received a box of East Coast/West Coast cupcakes from Sprinkles and Magnolia Bakery, a sweet nod to the bride's home state of California and the couple's new hometown.

william yeoward crystal vase
I’m a big proponent of self-sustaining vases. What is a ‘self-sustaining vase’ you ask? It’s a sculptural piece of glass or crystal that looks perfectly balanced withor-without a fresh bouquet of flowers. The truth is that I’m simply not capable of tending to a floral ensemble as often as it is required, the color of this William Yeoward Country Amethyst Vase easily compensates for a lack of bloom (and my green thumb).
