Est 1978
March 2018
Black in Blue There’s a new cop on the beat in Two Wells. Senior Constable Phil Black has taken up the position made vacant by Lance Grant, who has moved to the Port Adelaide prosecution offices. Phil was previously based at the Parks Police Station in Ottoway and has 16 years experience behind him. He’s spent some time at Gawler Police Station as well as traffic related policing at Elizabeth and is looking forward to being based closer to home.
Bec O’Brien reports: Phil says in a rural area such as Two Wells, locals can be of service to positive policing in the district. “We need people to report,” he said. “To be our eyes and ears from time to time. “If you see or hear something, contact your local police.” Contact police on 131 444 or the Two Wells Police Station on 8520 2309.
PowerED UP
A 300 megawatt capacity gas and diesel fired power station earmarked for Reeves Plains has been given state planning approval and is on track to be built by early next year. Minister for Planning, John Rau, gave the nod to the development on February 16 following a recommendation from the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP). The project, and its public consultation process, has had a mixed review from local residents, with one family vowing to move if the power station is built. Fischer resident, Crystal Molloy, husband Dean and their three young children, cite health concerns, as well as the visual and possible environmental impacts of the station, as the reason behind why they will sell up their dream home and

leave. Mrs Molloy, 32, lives about a kilometre from the proposed plant site and has lived in the area for more than a decade. “I don’t know what our next step is but we have to move,” she said. “I’m blank at the moment. “I don’t want to be here when the construction starts. “I don’t know what the future holds for us.” Mrs Molloy has led a strong community campaign to gather as much information as possible about the project and make it public and says she is “numb” following the decision. “How can they approve a project
Bec O’Brien reports: such as this?,” she said. “This was our forever home and the kids are upset. “This is the only home they’ve known. “My mind is just mush; it’s been so stressful.” Adelaide Plains Ratepayers Association president, John Lush, said the power station could be beneficial to local residents in the long run by offering a more reliable power source. Mr Lush said electricity supply and affordability was a big concern for ratepayers and despite the state
government’s push toward renewable energy means, other stable energy options needed to be considered. “A lifestyle without electricity is not good,” he said. “We can’t be dependant on Victoria and New South Wales (for our electricity) any longer. “We really do need to develop our own reliable source of electricity and it can’t be dependent on just any one renewable supply, it’s got to be a multitude of things that come together to offer a reliable and affordable electricity option.” Mr Lush said while there was little prospect of many long-term jobs as a result of the power station,
some would be created during the construction phase. The power station will comprise six gas and liquid fuel turbines, a 275kV sub-station (including switchyard, switch-room and control building), transformers, gas receiving station, diesel storage/ delivery system, water treatment plant (and water storages), wastewater treatment facilities (including an evaporation basin), ancillary buildings (including an office/control building, amenities building and workshop/warehouse) and associated infrastructure. The proposal also includes internal roads, car parking, security fencing, security lighting, fire fighting system, drainage works and landscaping. n Continued Page 2

Private health insurers pre-tax profits increased by 7.3 per cent in the 12 months to 2017 – raking in $1.86 billion before tax. At the same time, out-of-pocket costs continue to soar forcing families to give up their cover.

Labor has a plan to make private health insurance fairer for Australian families and shift the balance back to consumers. An elected Labor government will cap private health premiums at 2 per cent for two years and task the Productivity Commission with the biggest review of private health insurance in twenty years. Labor’s plan will deliver cost-of-living relief to 13 million Australians – an average saving of $340 to the family budget.
The first phase of the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS) is set to begin, with around 150 local jobs likely to be created in the construction phase. South Australian company Leed Engineering and Construction and their Joint Venture partner Valoriza Agua (Leed - Valoriza JV ) were awarded a $44 million contract for construction of the first phase of the agricultural growth enabler. Construction work will soon commence in and around SA Water’s Bolivar precinct, for the scheme that will see a new advanced water recycling plant, pump stations, above and below ground storage and transfer pipelines built to increase the site’s production, storage and supply of high - quality recycled water for irrigation. The project is on track to deliver water to customers in 2019. A separate commercial process seeking project proposals from agribusinesses across Australia and internationally to access the scheme’s water, closed last month. Water through the scheme will be suitable for horticulture, floriculture,
Bec O’Brien reports: fruit and nut orchards, table and wine grapes, high - value broad - acre cropping, poultry and other intensive animal husbandry, and aquaculture. South Australian Water and River Murray Minister, Ian Hunter, said the project was a boon for the region and for the state, one which would deliver much needed jobs and sustainability across a range of sectors. “Sustainability is at the core of the NAIS,” Minister Hunter said. “Sustainable water, sustainable food production, and sustainable economic growth. We can see NAIS is already delivering for South Australia, with real jobs created as a direct result of its planning and construction. “With more high-quality climate independent irrigation water set to flow to the Northern Adelaide Plains, jobs will continue to grow with the certainty provided by water that doesn’t rely on the seasons.” For further information, visit sawater.com.au/nais or contact nais@ sawater.com.au.
Power Plant helps drop power prices • From Page 1 The facility would be connected to the existing electricity grid and would include connections with the existing gas pipeline and SA Water pipeline. Access to the site would be from Day Road, which would be sealed from Redbanks Road to the entrance gate and include an upgrade of the Days Road and Redbanks Road intersection. Energy supplier Alinta, welcomed news of the planning approval, stating the company is now expected to undertake further work relating to gas and electricity connection, which will help determine the project plan and duration of the project. “Alinta Energy developed the proposal to re-enter the South Australian electricity generation market to support our existing and growing South Australian retail operations, deliver improved energy security and reliability in South Australia and importantly, put
downward pressure on energy prices for consumers,” the company’s group communications manager, Megan Taylor, said. “The project aligns with South Australia’s Energy Plan, the Strategic Infrastructure Plan and the Mallala (Adelaide Plains) Council Development Plan. There are also multiple economic opportunities and benefits for the local community, including around six full time jobs once the plant is operational and an estimated 100 workers would be required during the construction phase. “We have a long and successful history of operating gas-fired power stations and we always work to be a responsible neighbour in every community where we operate. “ Since consultation commenced in June 2017 we have been fortunate that the local community and stakeholders have contributed significant feedback and participated actively in the consultation process.

Camping motion rescinded Natalie Centenera reports:
Two public camping grounds within the Adelaide Plains region have been a contentious issue for some time. Adelaide Plains Council staff advised elected members at January’s meeting that council should be alleviated of any responsibility and costs involved in the management of the sites. A motion was moved to put the management of the campsites out to a public expression of interest for community groups or organisations willing to take on that responsibility. Council hoped that various community groups would put together a submission and volunteer to manage either the Mallala or Parham camping grounds. Councillors were divided on the issue with Mayor, Tony Flaherty, casting the deciding vote in favour of the motion. However, council staff have been unable to start the process of calling for a public expression of interest due to a motion to rescind the previous motion being on the records for February’s council meeting. Confused? So were the elected members in the chamber. “The whole thing has become untenable as it stands right now,” councillor Steve Jones said at the February 18 meeting. “I think the only way to resolve it, is to go back to where we were before, bring back the status quo and start again. “First of all, we need to rescind
Getting muddy It’s messy, muddy, mayhem all round at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre following a kind donation of a lovingly-built mud kitchen. Constructed and donated by the Playford Men’s Shed group, the mud kitchen has been a big hit with kindy and childcare children who access the centre. TWCCC acting director, Narelle Palmer, says the donation has opened up a myriad of play options and skills for the children. “This donation has given the kids an opportunity for more creative, imaginative and messy play, Narelle said. “They’re also developing their social, sensory, coordination and fine motor skills. We are very thankful for this donation.” The mud kitchen idea was championed by grandad Kol Kajanto, who is a member of the Playford Men’s shed, and whose grandson Luke Marafioti, attends the centre.
what’s going on now because no one knows what’s going on, I don’t know what’s going on.” Cr Margherita Panella suggested to separate the two council grounds and not to put them together as it is confusing the situation. APC’s Finance and Economic Development general manager, Rajith Udugampola, explained the original motion once again to the elected members. “The report is clear that we should

go for public expression of interest for both camping sites,” he said. “Management never had any intention of grouping any assets together.” Cr Marcus Strudwicke spoke in support of the original motion and expressed his desire to put a call out for expressions of interest. “If we rescind this and go back then we’re still back to stalled negotiations with the Lions about the lease,” he said,
Mallala Lions were negotiating to expand the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the ablutions block, which they built in 2013. The motion to rescind the motion was moved and carried. Negotiations for the Mallala camping ground will resume once again with the Mallala Lions. Management of the Parham camping ground will continue in its present state.
Council denied floodgroup exit Adelaide Plains Council’s request to withdraw from the Gawler River Floodplain Management Authority (GRFMA) was formally denied by Minister for Local Government, Geoff Brock. APC will remain a constituent council member on the GRFMA and seek to pursue a positive outcome from the upcoming charter review which will revisit the percentages each council member is required to contribute; an outcome APC had been pushing for previous to the withdrawal request. Elected members of APC controversially voted to remove themselves from the Authority in May last year, citing the financial weight of the proposed future mitigation works as burdensome and unfavourable to ratepayers. In Minister Brock’s correspondence to APC he advised the concerns held by council regarding the charter should be considered as part of the Authority’s charter review. APC is now heavily reliant on Southfront’s pending information to support its position, and will hold a special meeting in early March to consider the results. “There will be a lot more work to be done between now and the next meeting of the subsidiary (GRFMA) in relation to tabling those reports from Southfront,” APC CEO James Miller said at last Monday’s council meeting. “Obviously there is a strong sense of unrest amongst the community and indeed the chamber that the current percentage splits are unfair.”

Saturday March 17 will see South Australians head to the polling booths to either re-elect a Labor government, or usher in a new political party to lead the state. Unemployment, power prices and the state’s electricity issue will be hot items for consideration, with many households struggling to keep up with costs let alone each party’s philosophy and policy to address the issues. Many Australians complain about compulsory voting and look to the United States as a fine example of voluntary participation in democracy, but look where that got them! So if you’re apathetic about your voting responsibility try looking at it from a different perspective, this is your chance to have an input into governance that directly affects you. Either way, if your local primary school is putting on a sausage sizzle, you’re already winning. Don’t do a donkey, make your vote count, even if your preference doesn’t get up, the numbers tell a story of what people in your electorate want. This year Nick Xenophon’s new party, SA Best, is working hard to gain momentum and forcing the two major political parties to put on their running shoes for the race to parliament house. So who will you back? You can vote at any polling booth in South Australia, however voting outside your electoral district may take longer.

Virginia centre shines with new lights Virginia Residents Action Group (VRAG) would like to acknowledge and thank Playford Council for leading the way in upgrading the lights at the Virginia Community Centre to LED lights - both inside and outside the building. The project took place at the end of last year and involved changing nearly all of the original globes. LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. Ninety-five percent of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat. This is compared to fluorescent lights which convert 95% of energy to heat and only 5% into light. VRAG says this is a good example of council caring for the environment and saving money in the long-term.

Candidates hold Angle Vale chats The Angle Vale and Districts Residents Association (AVDRA) has been providing opportunities for election candidates to meet and speak with residents and business owners of Angle Vale about issues facing the growing community. AVDRA president, Sean Reardon, invited the political candidates for the electorate of Taylor to special meetings in order to listen and address community concerns. Jon Gee MP, incumbent member for Napier and Labor candidate for Taylor, met with a handful of residents at the Angle Vale Sports and Community Centre, on Monday February 26. The intimate discussion included issues that directly af-
fected the area, such as working towards upgrades to the local primary school, and securing a solution to the notorious Heaslip/ Curtis Road intersection. Liberal candidate Sarika Sharma met with residents on Monday March 5, and SA Best candidate Sonja Taylor the following evening. AVDRA has been actively working towards finding a solution to existing problems and are hoping the upcoming election will give them the opportunity to voice their concerns. The association has already raised some ongoing issues prior to the election. “These are the Curtis Road upgrade, footpath and stormwater issues, future education planning,

of options council could take to conduct the survey, including a postal survey, telephone survey or an online survey with an estimated cost of between $11,000 and $24,000, depending on the form the survey took, the number of questions asked and the survey sample size. APC development and community manager, Robert Veitch, said the survey was a way for council to keep in touch with local residents expectations and plan accordingly for the future.
“We’ll probably do them every two years,” Mr Veitch said. “It will give us an idea of where we’re improving, what we still need to improve on, what do the community want, whether they want more parks and gardens or do they want more access to social media, all sorts of things.” Mr Veitch said a report on the survey process and costing, and possibly some sample questions, would be brought back to council for consideration at its March meeting.

M a n y L u n a r N e w Ye a r celebrations were again held during February this year. Many of us were privileged to be involved and celebrate this important Chinese occasion. As South Australians, we are lucky to be part of such a multicultural community and one that wants to share their special events with all of us. I was pleased to attend Lunar New Year celebrations such as the Chinatown Gala Dinner at the Hotel Intercontinental and the Chinatown 15th Street Party in Moonta Street, Adelaide. It is amazing to see the Chinese community showcase their culture and contribute to our state. I also attended the TET New Year celebration at Quan Am Temple in Waterloo Corner with Jing Lee MLC and Sarika Sharma. We were honoured to be welcomed and take part in their traditional customs. I admire and commend Jing Lee MLC for her ongoing work with the multicultural community. J i n g ’s c o n t r i b u t i o n s i n Parliament, and her activity with different multicultural groups demonstrate her passion and dedication for multiculturalism in South Australia. Todd regales with Kokoda tale Lewiston local, Todd Gray, is enjoying favourable reviews for his solo show, Kokoda, featuring at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival. Portraying conscripted soldier, Private Morris Powell, in Peter Maddern’s story of the Australian experience in the Kokoda campaign, Gray’s ability to convey the larrikin nature of the many ill-prepared young men has been described as outstanding by critics. A remarkable achievement for a boy who grew up in Gawler with ambitions to make a career out of acting. Gray graduated from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2009 and describes himself as an actor, theatre-maker, writer and comedian having co-written and performed in a variety of shows; a well-known credit being an appearance on
Natalie Centenera reports: the popular Australian television series ‘McLeod’s Daughters’. He recently braved a standup comedy performance at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Gawler as part of the Gawler Fringe Festival, providing many laughs about his personal experiences with family and relationships. Gray uses his stand-up comedy as an outlet to write and perform his own material, and there is little doubt this experience has provided the confidence to take on such a dramatic role as he has in Kokoda, with only sound and lighting as his co-stars. “My grandfather, Private Alec Oliver, served in the same battalion (39th Battalion) I represent in the show,” he explains. “He passed away many years
ago now and this show is a great memorial to him, his friends and all those who served and gave their lives or left a piece of themselves there.” Kokoda debuted last year in July, the 75th anniversary of the Japanese invasion of New Guinea in 1942. “It’s an untold story about a group that gets glossed over in the whole scheme of things when it comes to the history of World War Two,” Gray said. “A story of one, or many, Australian larrikins, most of which gave their life to protect their country, people who never wanted a medal or a parade, they fought because it was the right thing to do. “It’s about someone who was dragged straight off the street and thrust into a world and situation they never knew existed.”
The script by Peter Maddern, also lauded by critics, requires Gray to be a seamless conduit between the author’s sentiments and the audience’s experience. Gray realises the importance of this story to many Australians and is heartfelt in his efforts to give the event the respect it deserves. “The sheer number of people who stayed back to shake my hand after most nights would almost bring a tear to my eye,” he said. “One night this sweet little old lady, whose uncle, Ralph Honnor, served and is mentioned in the show, grabbed my hand tightly, looked me in the eyes, introduced her family and just said,‘thank you, you have done them proud’. “Hands down made all the rehearsals and behind the scene work, worth it ten-fold.” Audience approval for this
Todd during his stand-up comedy act at the Gawler Fringe. year’s performance at the Fringe may well see the production picked up and taken to Edinburgh, Gray relishing audience numbers and standing ovations.
“We don’t plan on this finishing at the Fringe, we would like to tour it around school and RSLs,” he said. “It’s a great story, it really is and it deserves to be heard.”

South Aussie writer, performer and funeral celebrant to speak in Two Wells

www.twowellsecho.com.au
South Australian writer, performer and funeral celebrant, Tracy Crisp, will be a special guest speaker in Two Wells this month as part of Adelaide Plains Council’s popular library services author events. Tracy will regale stories of her travels and writing adventures at the Two Wells Bowling Club on Thursday 22 March from at 1pm . After several years in Abu Dhabi, Tracy has recently returned home to Adelaide. She is a public speaker, comedian and performer, and her solo show Pearls featured at the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Festival. Tracy’s work has appeared in Best Australian Stories, Griffith Review, Kill Your Darlings and Island. Her debut novel, Black Dust Dancing, was published in 2009 and is based on true events. It is an intimate and deeply-felt novel centring on a small industrial town where the industry that supports the community appears to be threatening its children. In addition to her writing, Tracy brings her love of storytelling to her work as a funeral celebrant, where she honours people’s life stories by helping to create meaningful, individual funeral ceremonies. Tracy’s second novel Surrogate is an unflinching depiction of some of the most emotive issues around motherhood both past and present. With tender characters and richly detailed textures, there is much for Adelaide readers to recognise in the novel’s choice of locations, including the (old) Adelaide Hospital, Jetty Road, The Parade and Centennial Park cemetery. Both Surrogate ($29.95) and Black Dust Dancing ($19.95) will be available for purchase on the day; please note: cash sales only. Seats for this event are limited and must be booked by contacting the Two Wells Public Library during opening hours on 8520 2100 or email – library@apc.sa.gov.au. Two Wells Echo, March, 2018

Suicide prevention network The Mallala and District Men’s Shed are working with SA Health and the office of the Chief Psychiatrist to set up suicide prevention programs in the greater Adelaide Plains area. A key element of the South Australian approach to suicide prevention is the establishment of Suicide Prevention Networks within the local community. Summer reading club celebrations
Game On! was the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Club and participants certainly took that to heart in their quest to read 10 or more books over the summer school holidays. Run by Adelaide Plains Council’s library services department, the program saw 70 children take part and 43 complete the challenge. That’s at least 430 books being read by young people in the district!
Bec O’Brien reports:
APC deputy mayor, Mel Lawrence, presented participants with a special certificate and age-appropriate book at an afternoontea celebration held at the library on Wednesday February 21. Mr Lawrence said it was wonderful to see so many young people using the library and enjoying reading.

profit clubs or groups to become involved if they wish to.” The incorporation of the group is currently underway and SA health has provided the group with a $5000 grant. While the base for this activity will be the Mallala Men’s Shed, meetings will be held in all areas of the Adelaide Plains. The suicide prevention group’s name is ‘Cross Road Connections’, and was officially launched at the Port Parham Strawberry Festival late last month. The name is quite apt as Mallala has a five road intersection (previously seven) and also implies that
if someone is at a crossroad in their life there are always connections that can be made to help them. “It’s important that we get the message out that you are not alone in your time of need,” Norm said. “It will not be an easy road as talking about suicide to people can be traumatic especially if their family have been affected. “I would like to thank the Adelaide Plains Council staff and councillors for their assistance in kicking of this important program. “Sadly, as we age we will all face these challenges in later life.” The Men’s Shed are also looking at other programs related to
dementia and alzheimer’s, and will be working with other providers to roll out programs, in a bid to make the Adelaide Plains a dementia friendly area. “I see these issues around dementia and suicide prevention as precursors to what Men’s sheds are about, there is growing evidence hand eye coordination, reading of plans, taking on projects in men’s sheds are beneficial to men’s mental health and wellbeing,” Norm said. If you would like to join the Mallala and District’s Men’s Shed and become involved in these programs, contact Norm Dicks on 0428 559 787. “Infrastructure. Every state has got to go forward. There’s nothing really substantial in the way of infrastructure here or road funding. Also, a community hub aimed at senior residents would be beneficial.”
“I think roads are the main thing in our district. Any government should be looking at spending money to fix our dirt roads especially.”
“In the Two Wells area the main street needs a lot of work. More rural roads need to be sealed also.”
“I would like to see more playgrounds in the area and more activities and things to do for families with kids. A community swimming pool would be fantastic.”

APK&OC vice president, Deb Heinze says the club also provides show training and advanced obedience training information. “Our aim is to have fun while learning,” she said. “We aim to train dogs at a consistent level, using commands, foot work etc, that is relevant to the training level, be that beginners or advanced. “We try to incorporate fun into each session and host events such as ‘come try evening’s and games, and graduation on a monthly rotation. “Come along and have some fun.
Bec O’Brien reports:
“You can always teach an old dog new tricks!” Young Two Wells resident, Harry Robinson, has been taking his American Staffordshire dog, Abby, to obedience classes for the past couple of months. The pair recently graduated from beginners level to level one and are enjoying learning basic obedience skills. Members of the club regularly participate in the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade, at which the club has won “Best Community” award for the past two years. “We also host two conformation dog shows each year, which is a major form of fundraising,” Deb said. “We have members involved with other dog sports outside the club too, such as conformation showing, lure coursing, weight pull competitions, sledding, and
of course obedience.” The club’s annual Championship Show will be held at the Dogs SA grounds at Kilburn on April 21 and 22, with another scheduled for later in the year. Deb says the club is gearing up for a move to Clara Harniman Reserve in Lewiston, following a decision by Adelaide Plains Council at its February meeting to begin the process of relocating them and establishing a lease. With the warmer weather right now, Deb says the club’s weather policy states if the temperature is 32 degrees or more at 5pm, that night’s training will be cancelled. Training will also be cancelled in the event of severe thunder or lightening. Training is held every Wednesday evening starting at 7pm. For more information about the Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club contact Deb Heinze on 8523 2690.

Food festival nears
Some popular South Australian faces will be in Two Wells later this month as part of the Northern Plains Food Festival, which organisers are hoping will attract 2000 people. The event on Sunday March 25 at the Two Wells Oval will showcase a variety of local produce, businesses and community groups and will be hosted by Andrew “Cosi” Costello of South Aussie with Cosi TV fame. Sprout Cooking School founders Callum Hahn, who is a former reality cooking television show contestant, and business partner, Themis Chryssidis are also onboard and will be staging cooking demonstrations throughout the day. “We know that some of SA’s

best produce comes from this region and we look forward to meeting some of the locals on the day,” a representative from the school said. “This event highlights some of SA’s finest local produce which is in line with the Sprout ethos which is where possible we prefer to use fresh, seasonal, local produce in our cooking.” The group behind the event, Northern Plains Compass, is excited by the vibe beginning to build in the district. NPC vice president, Peter Rentoulis said after 18 months of hard work, the March 25 date would be a testament to the region.

Sharing the Dignity Virginia local and Skinnymixers founder, Nikalene Riddle, pictured right with husband Michael and Sarah Ferraro and Sian Brown from the Skinnymixers team, is giving back once again. Nikalene has written at least five popular themed Thermomix cookbooks and has a huge online following. The company recently unveiled a project close to its heart, a “Sharing the Dignity” vending machine. Sales from the company’s Healthy Mix 2 cookbook helped fund the machine, which was recently installed in an emergency assistance centre for vulnerable women. Sharing her delight on social media, Nikalene said the installation of the machine, which provides free hygiene products to women
in need, was a “ridiculously proud moment”. Fantastic work Skinnymixers.
From the Horse’s’ Mouth If you travel the Two Wells-Gawler Road on a daily basis you might have seen this cheeky horse and sign outside the premises of the Adelaide Plains Equine Clinic. The guys and girls who work there are having a bit
of fun with travellers by dressing up the horse to fit a theme, special day or just to get a point across. In the past they’ve done something for Australia Day, inflatable shark included, Valentine’s Day (as shown above right) and have even tongue-incheck broached the subject of surgery (surgical gown and gloves on the horse of course!) for gelding! Keep it up APEC, definitely a highlight of the trip
from Two Wells to Gawler. Whatever will they come up with next?
Recently Engaged Congratulations to Barraba couple Jake Hawles and Veronica Betts who celebrated their three-year anniversary on Valentine’s Day by becoming engaged while on holiday in Victoria. The cute couple (pictured above right) are planning to get married in Autumn next year in possibly a garden venue.
Also planning to wed is Two Wells footballer Josh Osborne, who proposed to his partner Sarah Dinham on February 17 after a romantic hike along the boardwalk at Hallett Cove. With young daughter Stella strapped to his chest, Josh got down on one knee when the trio stopped near the water’s edge to take in the view. Despite laughing in shock it didn’t take Sarah long to say yes. After almost three years together the pair plan to
marry in 2020 surrounded by family and friends and of course their gorgeous daughter, who may just be old enough to steal the show as flower girl. Congratulations to you all.
Days of March There are plenty of special days in March, both religious and dedicated to certain causes, nationally and internationally, here are just a few of them. 8th March is International Women’s Day, a day
to celebrate the contribution and achievements of all women. It is an opportunity to remember the barriers that women have broken through, and the accomplishments they have made despite barriers. 12th March, Adelaide Cup! For those who are not partial to the GG’s, it means a long weekend, woot woot. 17th March is St Patrick’s Day, a cultural and religious celebration held on the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. For those who are not Irish, or Catholic, it simply does not matter. If you are looking for a reason to get together with mates, wear green and enjoy a few alcoholic beverages, this is your day. 30th March is Good Friday, a religious holiday primarily observed by Christians commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

Navigating the world that is social media Social media and young adolescents…at what age do we as parents allow our children to dive into the problematic world of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat? As an adult user, I have had to censor my own personal opinions, unfriend or unfollow certain individuals or publications and even restrict the time I spend scrolling through pages. I do my best to keep myself in check, and even though I am on the other side of 40, I can still sometimes get it wrong. These sites require an individual to be 13 years old to create an account, however this can be easily disregarded by simply entering an incorrect date of birth. The myriad of different issues that arise when a young adult is exposed to social media needs to be addressed before parents succumb to the pressure of teenage angst- of needing to jump into murky waters of ‘sharing’, ‘posting’ and ‘liking’ because everybody else is doing it. FOMO (fear of missing out) is what is driving most adolescents to create social media accounts, and keep up to date with what is happening in the social lives of the people they know (notice I didn’t use the word friends). Child psychologists offer varying, but similar, advice- wait until the required age, set time limits on usage, know your child’s passwords, and most importantly, be aware of their online activity. All of this monitoring inevitably gets away from parents, and issues ensue. Non-adherence to age limits is just the beginning. I’m sure ‘pester power’ has seen many parents consent to social media use when their kids are
below the age of 13. My son had an Instagram account created for him by a visiting family member from overseas when he was the tender age of 9! I was furious and he had no idea why, as it was set up to stay in contact with family. After leaving the account dormant for a few years, he started using it again recently and has mainly family members ‘following’, although the contacts list is growing with school friends and I am doing my best to keep an eye on it. The difference between my son and other adolescents is that he is my son. My point being that each individual using social media will use and experience it differently. For the most part he is disinterested and doesn’t allow ‘friends’ to follow him if he is not close to them. We’ve had a chat about posting photos of himself with other friends, and how this may leave people in his circle to be left with FOMO. We’ve had chats about posting too much information and how this can be: a) social suicide, and more seriously, b) plain dangerous. So for now, my boy is navigating social media as only an aloof, non-committed young lad could, hardly at all. I guess this may be a practise run for when he is older and it becomes more important in his life; he already knows how to use it, how other people use it, and what his parent’s expectations of him are. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it and probably be heading to Bec for some sound advice, as she has four daughters who she needs to steer through these waters. And that’s exactly what I feel like at the moment
Nat, the captain of a ship, but one who’s trying to steer their vessel safely across shark-infested waters with a cyclone on my tail! I must admit the world of social media scares me - no, it really does scare me. I’m definitely a novice and can honestly say I only signed up to Facebook so I could keep up with what people were talking about in my local community for work. I guess in that way I too succumbed to the FOMO syndrome. It’s a goal I’ve set myself this year - to learn more about and USE a variety of social media platforms so I can navigate this online world better in the hope I will gain an understanding, and perhaps appreciation, to pass onto my children. Already Miss 12 feels she is missing out and life’s not fair because she doesn’t have a phone or access to social media through her iPad. Be the “mean parent”, take the “it’s not fair” and “but all my friends do” comments and (as my kids often say) suck it up and be just that - a parent. For while these almost-teenagers think they know and understand the world that is online, they really don’t. I grew up in a rural community where trust, honesty, fairness and truth seemed to be the norm. Some might say I’m naive and shouldn’t take people at face-value but I honestly want to believe the good in people. If that means shielding my girls for as long as possible to the judgement, fear and hate that faceless people seem to spread around, then so be it. But in the same breath, Miss 12 can you please show me again how to keep my phone from storing photos where I can’t find them?

Council seeks feedback on lease request Natalie Centenera reports: Last month the Echo reported Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) had requested to lease a portion of land at Clara Harniman Reserve from Adelaide Plains Council (APC). APEC treasurer, Tracey Smith, addressed councillors during open forum at last month’s council meeting, speaking to budget concerns related to the establishment of a lease,
connection to water mains and a meter, as well as fencing off of native vegetation. Ms Smith provided some clarity in relation to the documented expenditure required in their submission, reiterating to councillors that APEC were not requesting funding. Councillors were satisfied with the submission and voted in support of APEC. Councillor Keen then moved a motion to have an audit completed on
remnant native vegetation if one has not been completed in the last three years. The Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club have also requested to relocate and lease a portion of Clara Harniman Reserve as their current site may be proposed for future retail/ commercial development. Council staff will now commence the public consultation process before a lease agreement will be entered into.

Angle Vale Cricket Club held its bi-annual ‘Miss Angle Vale’ on Saturday February 24 at the Angle Vale Sports and Community Centre. A good turn-out of about 30 cricketers attended in their red-carpet attire to grace the catwalk for judging on who would take the trophy for Miss Angle Vale 2018. Members of the club’s women’s cricket team were judges for the evening and asked each contestant a series of questions. There were also prizes for best and worst dressed. “Some were enthusiastic to participate (and) some were forced,” Angle Vale Cricket Club president, Jim Richardson, laughed. “We all had a great night with an all-you-caneat Burrito dinner before the big event took place.” Best on ground (sorry catwalk) was Ashley Fry. Ashley will proudly own the title of Miss Angle Vale until 2020.

Election commitment to Two Wells Bowling Club Natalie Centenera reports: Hot on the heels of a $90K promise for a Two Wells playground within the oval precinct, Labor is keen to attract the votes of local lawn bowlers in the area. Labor candidate for Taylor, Jon Gee MP, announced on Wednesday February 21, that a re-elected Labor Government would invest $250,000 for new synthetic turf surfaces at Two Wells Bowling Club. The club has spent the last few years progressively upgrading their greens and were actively seeking grant funding to continue the process. The committee approached Mr Gee in September 2017 requesting assistance with a funding application and a support letter, but unfortunately were unsuccessful. “I have committed to assist this club to deliver this project which I think is helping to build a trusting relationship with our community,” Mr Gee said. Mr Gee announced this commitment to the members of the bowling club believing the investment will encourage more players to join and allow the club to run programs throughout the year with local schools, foreseeing future growth as more young families move into the local area. “Two Wells is a growing community and I believe that investments
in local community infrastructure are crucial to ensure that families in Two Wells have access to quality recreation and sporting facilities,” he said. Two Wells Bowling Club President, Grant Devlin, said Labor’s commitment was a big boost for the club. “With this amount, both greens would be able to be upgraded to synthetic surfaces,” Mr Devlin said. “We would be able to use the bowling greens 12 months of the year and offer a curriculum to promote bowls in local schools.” However, the club will continue to seek grant funding, submitting another grant application before the March state election. Mr Devlin also met with MLC John Dawkins and Liberal candidate for Taylor, Sarika Sharma, last Tuesday, February 27, to discuss the level of support that would be received if Liberal are voted into power. “They made no promises but assured us of their continuing support in relation to submitting grant applications,” Mr Devlin said. The Two Wells Bowling Club is confident it will be successful with an eventual upgrade as the board have worked very hard in pushing for a positive outcome that would benefit the whole community. “The previous board, headed by Philip Devlin, were the big pushes in all of this, and our secretary, Irene Giannikos, has put a lot of work into the grant applications, “Mr Devlin said.
Bowling away to an upgrade is Two Wells Bowling Club president Grant Devlin, Jon Gee MP, and Two Wells Bowling Club secretary Irene Giannikos.
Bowling season starting to wind down The Metropolitan Bowls Association Pennant season is down to the last match on the March 3. The Saturday open gender competition had a mixed bag of results. The first side are in the top four with one game to go as of March 1. Congratulations to Brenton Bain who is on top of the Skipper’s ladder for the whole of the division. The second side, who were promoted this season, have not
fared so well after losing a few players from last season. A lot of matches were lost by only a few shots, but as they say “so close, but not close enough”. Their top Skipper for the division was Pam Prescott. The third side have had a topsy turvy year and with one game to go, are staving off relegation. Ian Telfer is 4th on the Skipper’s ladder for this division and has managed the team well with either a shortage of players or an abundance
of players. The Ladies side (Thursday competition) is third on the ladder with Pam Prescott being the top Skipper for the side and 4th for the division. The Men’s sides in the Wednesday Men’s competition have not fared so well this season, however the first side will retain their position in this division. The top Skipper for this side was Frank Van den Heuval in third place for the division (only 1 point
off of top spot). The second Men’s side had an unsettled year. Struggling to fill the side was reflected in the results and the side will be relegated next season. The best Skipper for the season was Mick Nichols. Tony Zarko, ably assisted by Joyce Dunne have co-ordinated the social “Come and Try” bowls and Ian Campbell has been on hand to give some coaching. Night bowls is a way of get-
ting to know the game, learn some new skills, do some gentle exercise and make new friends. Wayne Stauwer and Joe Piscioneri have been on hand to keep the players refreshed and to sell them a raffle ticket. All of the club championships have been played and won. Congratulations to the winners, Pam Prescott - Ladies Singles, Ben Smith - Men’s Singles, Pam Prescott and Bev Molloy - Ladies pairs and Brenton Bain
and Mick Pickstock - Men’s pairs. The President’s singles was a hard fought competition with first-year bowler, Sue Dansie missing out by one shot, in the final, to Grant Devlin. The Memorial pairs competition will be played on Saturday March 24 followed by the Presentation Night with dinner. The greens will be available for a “roll up” on Thursdays until Anzac Day. Two Wells Netball Club took part in the recent summer netball season held in Gawler, with two teams making it to the finals. While frustrations abounded throughout the season due to many games being cancelled because of extreme heat, the club was fortunate to have its 13 and Under team as well as its B1 Grade players compete in the finals. At the time of print the U13 team had secured a spot in the grand final, convincingly beating Gumnuts to advance straight to the season decider, while the B1 team was set to take on Mallala in the preliminary final on March 6. Well done to all players. The club is now looking forward to its winter season, with senior trials completed and junior training set to begin this month. Girls bring home the gold The 2018 Junior State Softball Championships were held at Anembo Park in Mount Barker February 23-25, hosted by the Hills Association. Gawler and Districts Softball Association sent three teams – U13 girls, U13 boys and U17 girls, made up of representatives from the five clubs within the association, including Two Wells. All players stayed at Shiloh Hills Accommodation Park in Ironbank and travelled by bus daily to the grounds at Anembo Park. The three teams were sponsored by a variety of companies which paid for a team shirt, while the association paid for their bus travel and families their food and accommodation. Results from the Junior State Championships: U13 boys played five games, two of which were against U15 boys. These were rilliant games and the boys finished third for the weekend. The U13 girls had eight teams split across two pools. After five
