Riley’s big ride rolls out

For most eight-year-olds a lap or two around the block on their bike is considered a bit of fun.

Virginia resident and bike enthusiast Riley Evitts is taking his love of cycling a WHOLE lot further, planning to ride a mammoth 800 kilometres over seven days from Melbourne to Adelaide later this month.

For the past 12 months Riley, 8, has been hitting the road with his Pop, Paul Turnbull, training hard for the trek.

After more than 20 years of advocating for a skate park in Two Wells, a dream will soon be realised for local resident Tony Lange, when a pump track is installed at Hart Reserve later this year.

Tony, a well-known local businessman and Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) vice president, has been campaigning for a skate park in the township since his youngest child, who’s now in his 20s, was a young boy.

“It’s a good outcome for all the years of hard work, and we’re looking forward to the community making use of this great asset,” Tony said following a resolution at Adelaide Plains Council’s February 24 meeting, where council voted in favour

“It’s been a common denomination, the desire to have a skate park in the township, and there’s been the need for it,” he said.

“This pump track should be a good thing for the area and we hope many, many children get enjoyment out of it.

“If it gets the kids out of the house and doing outdoor activities, it’s got to be a good thing.”

Tony said he hoped the pump track would give local children an “extra activity” to participate in and would also attract visitors to the town. n Continued Page 2

Xavier College Two Wells OPENING 2021

Clara Harniman Reserve in Lewiston, its home for the next decade.

This is a move Deb believes will benefit not only the 25 or so club members, but also the broader community, and particularly the dog community.

“The dream is to have a multipurpose dog hub here,” Deb said.

“We want to be able to offer more than just obedience.

“Disciplines like weight pulling, dog sledding, even dances with dogs - there is so much potential to incorporate any dog sports that require a home base.”

APKOC members already compete in dog rally events and conformation shows, as well as taking part in weekly dog obedience training sessions, with the club offering all levels of dog obedience from puppy school up to grade five.

The club has been working to raise funds for the project for some time, holding regular raffles, dog shows at Dogs SA’s Kilburn base, and fun-

draising barbeques.

“This relocation has been on the cards for 16 years that I know of,” Deb said.

“It’s a blank canvas here and it’s central to a dog-focused area within the animal husbandry area.”

Deb met with council staff at the site last month to discuss the relocation and expects levelling works to begin shortly.

APC mayor Mark Wasley confirmed council staff met at the site with members of APKOC in relation to the club’s relocation.

“We are continuing to work closely with the club to help them achieve what they are looking for,” Mayor Wasley said in a statement.

Council also advised it is ‘assisting the Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club with obtaining engineering advice so they can finalise their design/site plan as soon as practicable.’

Works for the relocation will likely involve, amongst other aspects, earthworks and terracing of the existing surface to accommodate club rooms, car parking and fencing.

A council spokesperson said council allocated $50,000 in the 2018/2019 budget and $100,000 in the 2019/2020 budget towards improvements to the Clara Harniman Reserve, which includes the relocation of the Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club.

Protecting our rare native plants Bec O’Brien reports: Rare plants localised to the Lewiston area have a better chance of survival following new fencing being erected at Clara Harniman Reserve.

Two Wells Lewiston and Districts Landcare Group recently received a $7000 grant from the federal government’s Communities Environment Program for improvements at the reserve.

Along with fencing, the grant will be used for weed management and installation of signage identifying a number of the native species of flora and fauna in the area.

“This is a very positive collaborative project and, in addition to the grant funding, there has been great support from Adelaide Plains Council, Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty and the Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club,” Two Wells Lewiston and Districts Landcare Group coordinator Pat Wake explained.

“This is about preserving remnant vegetation in the area as there’s very little left in the Adelaide Plains region. This is pre-European settlement bushland here.”

Pat helped compile a species list of plants in the newly fenced area last year.

Species of importance and significance the Landcare group found include peppermint box, a type of eucalyptus; and the indigenous plant Westringia rigida, a low-lying, hardy shrub with an array of small white flowers that attract native birds.

Through her conservation and land management work at Nuriootpa TAFE, Pat hopes to conduct another species audit later this year when growing conditions are improved.

Nails a pointy issue at Port Parham Jess Preece, of Wasleys, knows first hand the impact of a horse stepping on a nail.

Her purebred champion Arabian stallion, Malleegrove Mandalla, is currently recovering from a hoof injury sustained after stepping on a nail at Pt Parham on New Year’s day.

In recent weeks, more than four kilograms of nails have been removed from the designated horse float parking area at the popular beachside town by locals, visitors and Adelaide Plains Council staff; something that has rocked the horse community in the region and on a broader social media scale.

“We thought it was a one-off, bad luck incident until we saw the social media post,” Jess said.

“I am extremely upset about it.

“The other horses at the beach (at the time) were kids’ ponies.

“Who were they intending to target?”

Jess’ horse is recovering but still out of action and will not be sound to take part in the prestigious Australian Arabian National Championships in early March, which he had been training for since last year.

“If it had punctured the joint capsule we would have most likely no longer had a horse.

“But to have kids ponies affected would have been just as bad.”

Jess said she thought Manny picked up the nail as soon as he got off the float, in the designated float parking area.

“He was slightly lame, we didn’t think it was a big one and put it straight in the water, thinking that was the best thing to do,” she said.

A subsequent trip to the vet followed by xrays, costing

around $900, showed the extent of how close Manny came to a life-threatening injury.

“The vets’ concern was that the nail had gone through the joint capsule,” Jess explained.

“He was very lucky this didn’t happen, as if it gets in there and introduces bacteria into their joint, it’s very serious.

“It was basically a wait and see situation, and was only luck it wasn’t worse.”

Jess has been going to Pt Parham beach for the past few years and is disappointed the horse community has been targeted in such a way.

“We go to Parham a fair bit as we like to do sunset photos,” she said.

“This is pretty distressing, and I know of a couple of people who won’t go back there because of this.

“I really don’t understand where this is coming from and I really don’t understand why.

“There are better ways to express your displeasure with things.

“There’s no need, doing what basically comes down to animal cruelty, to make a political point.”

Propagating plants Bec O’Brien reports: Learning how to identify and propagate native plants was the basis of a free two-day training workshop held in Two Wells last month.

Led by the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges NRM group and supported by Trees for Life, Adelaide Plains Council, Two Wells Lions Club and Conservation Volunteers Australia, the training session attracted about 15 keen participants.

Some already had a great understanding of the plant world, for others it was their first exposure to the new “language” that is native plants.

Trees for Life operations manager, Peter Watton, and nursery manager Brett Oakes, along with Gawler NRM volunteer support officer, Liz Ninnes, were a wealth of knowledge, answering a myriad of questions and rolling the Latin plant names off the tounge with ease.

The workshop was broken into two phases, with the first phase being plant

identification and seed collection practices, topped off with a field trip to the nearby Baker’s Road wetland.

The following week participants were shown how to prepare soil and seeds for planting, fill tube stock correctly and plant seeds, many of which were as small as a poppy seed, if not smaller.

Tips were also given on how to plant from cuttings and water wisely to give the tiny seeds the best chance of survival as possible.

February Update I was honoured to join Gawler Mayor Karen Redman in speaking at the conclusion of the State Junior Softball Championships on Sunday, February 23rd. Conducted by the Gawler and Districts Softball Association at Karbeethan Reserve, the event saw the best young softball players from all around the state battle it out for the championship. I wish to thank Gawler and Districts Softball Association Chair Amanda Ungar and her team of volunteers for putting together a very successful event and for giving me the honour of presenting championship medals to players from Hills, West Torrens and Sturt.

On Saturday, February 16th I was pleased to accept the invitation from Greyhound Racing SA Chairman Grantly Stevens to attend the Greyhound of the Year awards dinner at Nixon’s Function Centre in Gawler. During the event I was given the opportunity to announce the winners in the SA Bred, Sprinting and Distance categories on behalf of Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Corey Wingard MP. I wish to congratulate all the winners at this year’s awards and thank Greyhound Racing SA for continuing this great tradition.

I have recently decided that I will not seek preselection for another term in Parliament and will retire at the 2022 State election. Since I was first elected in 1997 it has been, and continues to be, an honour to serve as a Member of the Legislative Council and I wish to thank everyone who has supported me over the years. I have relished the opportunity to serve the community and act as a leader on important subjects such as mental health, suicide prevention, surrogacy and many more. Main street makeover moves forward Bec O’Brien reports: Adelaide Plains Council’s ambitious plans to makeover the Two Wells main street by the end of the year are moving forward, with the towns disused police house earmarked for demolition as part of the process and a special community reference group set to be established.

In a report considered by council at its February 24 meeting, APC chief executive officer, James Miller, outlined

the progress to date with regard to the project.

“Jensen PLUS has been formally engaged to undertake concept design drawings and a detailed master plan for the project, which is already well underway,” Mr Miller stated.

“Grant funding consultant, Jenny Fleming, has been engaged to undertake the preparation of an application under the People for Places funding stream to leverage the $700,000 apportioned to the project through the Drought Communities Programme

Round 2 funding.”

Mr Miller’s report said council management had also met with representatives of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, and SA Police, with hopes of securing the land upon which the now disused police house is located.

“This is a crucial element of the process so as to ensure a greater extent of land is provided for the town square,” he said.

At a recent meeting with APC management, planning and design consultants, Jensen PLUS, proposed the establish-

ment of a Community Reference Group for the project; an initiative council has decided to adopt.

“It is the CEO’s recommendation that such a group be composed, however it is crucial that the brief/charter of such a reference group be prescriptive so as to ensure the project is not delayed,” Mr Miller said.

“Furthermore, it is imperative that any such reference group is comprised of passionate and connected stakeholders within our community as a means of providing value

to what will be delivered on ground.

“To that end, any such reference group would consist of a mixture of elected members, community development staff, community representative bodies, local business sector identities, local sporting and leisure club stakeholders as well as those entities currently investing in Two Wells, primarily Catholic Education SA and the Hickinbotham Group.

The CEO hoped the reference group, once established, would meet for the first time

in early March.

“Early feedback to date from some members of the community has indicated a real interest amongst those members to be involved in the project in some way, shape or form,” he stated.

“The process from here will see the ongoing development of draft concept plans and master planning of the public realm for presentation back to council in late March/early April ahead of community consultation thereafter.”

The chamber voted in favour of the CEO’s recommendation.

Riley’s ride of a lifetime • From page 1

Departing Melbourne’s Docklands on March 22 and arriving at the front gates ofAdelaide Oval on Monday March 30, Riley’s “Big Ride” - as his family are calling this adventure - has been a year in the making and will raise funds for the South-Australian based Little Heroes Foundation.

In Year 3 at Virginia Primary School, Riley, along with Paul, has been racking up the kilometres, with as much as 200 kilometres being ridden in one day and averaging almost 100 kilometres per ride at an average speed of 21 kilometres per hour.

The pair have been training most Saturdays and Sundays but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, with Riley taking a few tumbles off the bike along the way.

Riley’s mum, Amy, dad, Joel, sixyear-old brother Toby, four-year-old sister, Dakota, and Nan, Sandy, are the team’s biggest supporters.

The family has organised a schnitzel night at the local hotel, sponsorship, tshirts and stickers, as well as matching bikes, helmets and outfits.

“Riley has always been a very talented sports person,” proud mum, Amy explained.

“He could catch a ball before he could walk and only had training wheels on his bike until he was about three years old.

“Riley’s first big bike ride with his Pop was roughly 20kms from our house in Virginia to my parents’ house in Blakeview when he was four years old.

“Not long after that his Pop and I took him for a bike ride through the Barossa, which was closer to 40kms and then he was totally hooked on cycling.”

“Riley watched many of his video diaries and his Pop contacted Ed and offered him a place to stay when he arrived in Adelaide,” Amy said.

“Ed stayed at Riley’s Nan and Pop’s house for a week to rest and do some repairs on his bike.

“Riley had the opportunity to go with him on a short bike ride and it was then he was inspired to have an adventure of his own.”

When Riley was seven years old his Nan and Pop gave him a brand new professional Bianchi men’s XS road bike, and from there the rest, as they say, is history.

Riley and Pop had their first official training ride on March 30 last year but had been riding together casually for some years already.

“When Riley got his first road bike he had to learn all about gears and how they work,” Amy said.

“He has also had to learn how to clip his cleats in and out of his pedals.”

Not many children get to do something this unique and special with their grandparent.

While it’s a buzz for Riley, Paul cherishes the time he gets to spend with his grandson.

“It’s a privilege to be able to spend that much time with my grandson and that's really something that we should all stop and think about, how important it is to just spend time with our kids or grandkids,” he said.

"When opportunities like this come

forward you should grab it.

“As Riley gets older I hope that he will remember this time we spent together and still want to spend time with me doing what we both love.”

Riley himself is looking forward to the ride now that the kickoff day is only a matter of weeks away.

The quietly spoken lad said he was feeling nervous but excited about the challenge and the road ahead.

“It is a long way but we’ve been training hard and it’s fun riding my bike,” Riley enthused.

For Riley’s mum, Amy, this ride is a big undertaking for such a young lad, but one she has every faith he will complete.

“I don’t think it's fair to tell your kids that ‘you can do anything you put your mind to’ and then when they come to you and say I want to do an 800km bike ride’, well you can’t exactly say no,” she said.

“Riley is very humble and I don’t think that he realises he is going to accomplish something incredible that most adults could never do.

“Most eight-year-olds ride their bike around their back yard and then go and do something else when they get bored or tired but Riley does not see this as an option.

“He will do whatever it takes to cross that finish line because he said he would do it and that is just who he is.

“This kid can do anything that he puts his mind to (and) Joel and I are so proud of the hard work and dedication he has shown.”

Matt’s ninemonth odyssey: 28 countries 283 days Travelling has long been a passion of mine.

It certainly wasn’t an easy decision to leave behind family and friends, and in the process remove myself from my very own comfort zone.

However, with the travel bug in my system and the fear of regret, I was determined to give it a go.

This was the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime, as I set out to see more of the world.

Some planning took place and before long I had a departure date locked in.

I prioritised places I’d never been to and things that I wanted to experience.

It can be a challenge lining up flights with tours and aligning dates with activities.

Rather than going through a travel agent, I decided to organise it myself.

Sure, my previous travel experience helped, but with things easily accessible online it was both achievable and rewarding.

And then there was the packing.

Allowing for all types of weather conditions in the different countries, plus staying within all of the necessary transport guidelines and all the while keeping my backpack as light as possible.

I must admit overall things fell into place quite well

throughout my trip.

Yes there were ups and downs along the way; a bus mishap, lost bag, customs queries and a flight mix up being the worst scenarios I encountered.

Plus there were long hours spent waiting at airports, train and bus stations.

The key is not to panic, and work your way through it.

Well, that’s what I kept telling myself anyway.

It always makes for good storytelling when you get home at least, even if not at the time.

Compared to some of the stories I’ve heard and disasters seen on TV, I feel very lucky.

I experienced a range of different hostels around the world, catering from four people through to 24.

Most were great, if you put aside the snorers and fellow travellers making noise and turning lights on and off at all hours of the night. All part of the fun though!!

If you’re travelling alone

Lions at Krueger National Park, South Africa. hostels are a great way of meeting people and fellow travellers that are often in the same situation as you - flying solo.

One of the things I enjoy most about travelling is the people you meet.

I met some amazing people throughout my journey.

One thing I will take from this trip is some reassurance that there are still good people out there in this world.

Despite all of the bad things happening and the negative news reports we see each day, there is a lot to still be positive about.

My adventures took me through 28 different countries across 283 days: China, Mongolia, Russia, Turkey, Albania, Egypt, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czechia, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain, USA and Mexico.

I felt like Forrest Gump, always on the move!!

There were plenty of highlights on my world adventure.

Riding the Trans Mongolian and Siberian trains from Beijing through to Moscow.

Sure, three days in a row on the train without a shower and only basic facilities isn’t for everyone, but the scenery is interesting and there’s always

the food carriage to keep you going.

One thing I’ll always remember is the instant mashed potato.

Simply add boiling water to the pack and stir.

With hot water the only option for heating food on the train, it was a staple part of my diet at this time.

One thing high on my list was attending the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli.

It not only gave me the opportunity to pay respects to those who sacrificed their lives for our country, but to get more of an idea of what they encountered.

Seeing the terrain they were up against as well as the Turks only increases the respect I have for our diggers.

What an experience!! It still sends chills up and down my spine thinking about it now, hearing the last post at the rising of the sun and visiting the numerous memorial sites.

Another highlight was seeing the pyramids in Egypt.

If you put aside all of the locals trying to sell you camel rides or take your photo for a monetary tip, it was breathtaking.

How they built all of these giant structures thousands of years ago without the machines or technology of today to lift the stone blocks, is mind boggling.

Particularly when you con-

sider they’re hollow inside and measure 147m high.

The pictures I took probably don’t do them complete justice.

Then there was Africa.

Starting at the spectacular Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

I didn’t mind getting saturated from the overspray at this marvel, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Measuring 1708m in width and descending at 61m, I can verify it’s huge!!

South Africa was exciting.

Having the chance to see animals roaming free in their natural environment was exhilarating.

I missed out on seeing all of the big five, but a definite highlight for me was a pack of lions we encountered.

It took us some bush bashing to do it, but we got a front row seat.

Here I was in the back of a safari vehicle with lions so close I could almost reach out and touch them.

Ireland has long been on my list of places to visit and it didn’t disappoint.

The people were super friendly and the scenery was spectacular.

Just a word of warning, beware the narrow roads.

I hired a car to get around and enjoyed the Coastal Route, sometimes ignoring my navigation directions and venturing off track.

Some of the roads I went down were barely wide enough for one car let alone two.

There were many times I was in the long grass, but thankfully returned the hire car without any scratches.

Oktoberfest was a fun experience.

I booked through a tour group as I thought this would be best for a two-day itinerary and a taste of this famous festival.

In order to get a table we lined up at the gate early, ready to make a break for it.

We were packed in like sardines, so no one was going anywhere initially.

We eventually made it through to the sight of people running in all directions around the Oktoberfest grounds.

It made me laugh seeing ladies and gents dressed in German attire racing to beer tents for the best possible table position.

I could tell stories all day and write pages and pages, but I’ll leave it there.

It took courage to pack up and head off on my own for nine months, however I’m so grateful that I was able to do it.

So many wonderful experiences and adventures, complemented by the people I met from various parts of the world.

Travel certainly does broaden your horizons and make you appreciate what you have at home.

There were so many homeless people around everywhere I visited, struggling to survive.

My advice to anyone considering travelling or even a gap year, is go for it.

Sure, there are risks and challenges, but who knows what tomorrow brings.

Take the necessary precautions and embrace the excitement of new experiences.

Travel isn’t for everyone I understand but it is infectious though.

Who would think when I set out on my first overseas trip 16 years ago that it would lead to taking a gap year?

Now I have the travel bug and a desire to see and experience more in this big, wide world.

This is just the beginning!!

THE well watered lawns of St Helen’s Park in Prospect provided a lovely setting for the 66th Mallala and District reunion on Sunday Reunion president, Paul Angus, welcomed more than 60 past and present residents, including some of the class of 1967.

Adelaide Plains Council mayor and former Mallala primary student, Mark Wasley, officially opened the day, and gave a very interesting and comprehensive speech on his life growing up in the district and his working life in various law enforcement agencies.

Paul then mentioned various places of interest around the district including Mallala Museum, Pinery Fire Memorial, and History Judy Tucker chats with Tricia and Leon of Grace Plains exhibits.

Two Wells Playgroup kids cook up a storm It was finger-licking good fun at Two Wells Playgroup last month with a cookie baking session capturing the imaginations, and taste buds, of some of the region’s littlest people.

Eager to get involved, the children measured, mixed, rolled, cooked and ultimately enjoyed the fruits of their hard work - gooey, delicious chocolate-chip cookies.

Their faces say it all; this Playgroup session was a hit.

Lewis helps Cowell claim Sausage King crown FORMER Mallala lad, Lewis Helps, is cutting and carving his way to the climax of his career at Cowell, after recently claiming the crown as Australia’s Sausage King.

Lewis, the son of Bevan and Michelle Helps of Mallala and brother of Eliza and Russell, completed his apprenticeship at Two Wells before moving over to the Eastern Eyre Peninsula with his partner about four years ago.

The 25-year-old co-manages Our Butcher @ Cowell with good mate, Alec Klingberg, 22.

The young lads topped the Australian Meat Industry Council’s Sausage King competition in the Australian Lamb/Open category with a lamb, feta and sundried tomato product.

In doing so, they claimed victory over more than 3200 independent butchers across the country.

The competition is judged by a combination of chefs, former butchers and industry leaders.

Judges critique each product’s raw presentation, how it looks cooked and then flavour when cooked.

“It is all judged anonymously so nothing is labelled but we knew which product was ours and there

The Our Butcher @ Cowell pair also jagged a runner up gong in the Gourmet/Open class for their Merguez product, a spicy French sausage inspired by a recipe found in an old cookbook.

Lewis said the co-managers work hard on their product development.

“Alec and I will come up with ideas, make it and just continue tweaking it batch to batch until we think we’ve got it right,” he said.

Lewis hoped to continue forging a reputation around the competition in a similar manner to Mathie’s Meats at Clare, which became notorious for its success on the national stage.

The success has also been a morale boost for the Cowell community, with locals getting right around the boys and the butcher business.

“Everything really picked up after we won at state level,” Lewis said.

“We’ve had a lot of customers coming in and congratulating us, there have been a lot of handshakes flying around town, that’s for sure.

a vast majority of our beef is too, so we support local producers as much as we possibly can.”

Competitors start in the regional competition, where the Cowell team won through over entries from the Eyre Peninsula, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula.

They then topped the charts in

the state finals last year and rounded that out with success at the nationals.

“It is very exciting, we never expected to go that far,” Lewis said.

“The whole process has been an eye-opener for us, we’ve set the bar high for ourselves but we’ll have another shot in all six different categories next year and keep

trying to improve.”

In somewhat obvious fashion, Lewis has also jagged the nickname ‘Snags’.

“I picked that up as soon as I moved here,” he laughed.

“It’s pretty typical of a small country town, everyone has a nickname here.”

Maggie’s Going Nowhere – Rose Hartley Oh, Maggie. Maggie is a full time lounger, slacker, and shirker.

She stays at uni so long they kick her out, her mum has had enough of her spongeing, disinherits her and kicks her out too.

Maggie prefers not to work and succumb to the dull lifestyle that society expects.

At 29 she hasn’t got a cent to her name, in fact she’s attracted quite a debt. What does she do when she’s down to her last dollar?

She buys a vintage caravan!

Maggie is SO exasperating.

She’s super self-involved and she’s got absolutely no ambition.

But, you know what, I really came to love her.

She’s funny and she rebels in a way we all want to sometimes.

This book was honest and true to life; I know people like Maggie.

The threads of romance weren’t movie-like, they were realistic.

The setting felt so familiar to me, I love this about Australian fiction.

This is a story of growth and growing up.

It’s funny and light, the perfect beach read.

Ratty reads The story kept me engaged the whole time, and there were moments where I was genuinely laughing out loud.

I think I’ll miss Maggie now, she’s a character that came off the page and one that stays with you long after you’ve closed the door on the book.

Hartley also painted Maggie’s caravan.

Aussie chicks will love this one, it’s a 4.5 star read for me! Despite it being set in Collingwood, Victoria, the author Rose Hartley is a born and bred Adelaidean!

I asked Rose a couple of questions about her novel and she kindly shared: What was your inspiration for writing Maggie’s Going Nowhere? Was Maggie’s character based on someone you know?

I wrote Maggie’s Going Nowhere as an antidote to full time work and responsibility.

Maggie was my escape and I

lived vicariously through her, making her do and say all the fun and ridiculous things I sometimes wanted to do and say when I was trapped behind a desk.

Why was Maggie set in Melbourne?

I set the novel in Melbourne, specifically in Collingwood, because it was where I was living at the time (I’ve since moved back to Adelaide, where I grew up). I left my heart in Collingwood.

It’s got a lot more gentrified since I lived there but damn the music is good.

What is a book that you are always recommending?

I’m always recommending Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik for pure escapism and My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh for a brilliantly difficult female narrator.

Book Review Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month.

The book club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

We hope you enjoy the segment and are provided with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read.

This month’s book is Thomas Hardy’s, Far From the Madding Crowd.

Far from the Madding Crowd was Thomas Hardy’s fourth novel and his first major literary success.

Set in Hardy’s Wessex in rural southwest England, it deals in themes of love, honour and betrayal, against a backdrop of the seemingly idyllic, but often harsh, realities of a farming community in Victorian England.

It describes the life and relationships of Bathsheba Everdene with her lonely neighbour William Boldwood, the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak, and the thriftless soldier Sergeant Troy.

Bathsheba, a 22-year-old mesmerising young woman has come to Weatherbury to take up her position as a farmer on the largest estate in the area, land she inherited from her late uncle.

Her bold presence draws three very different suitors: the gentleman-farmer Boldwood, soldier-seducer Sergeant Troy and the devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak. Each, in contrasting ways, unsettles her decisions and complicates her life, with tragedy ensuing threatening the stability of the whole community.

Most book club members who loved the book did so because of the language, and the people who didn’t love the book did so because of the language finding it too hard, over phrased and flowery.

The author spends a lot of time on heavily detailed descriptions, while some book club members found this frustrating, others found these descriptions quite beautiful and helped to set the mood for the story.

Hardy is famous (or infamous) for such things as taking three pages to describe the sky.

Language aside, the plot was found to be decidedly ‘thin’ but also enjoyable.

Most members agreed the almost Shakespearian depictions of the peasant-class – the ‘local yokels’ – provided much comic relief, particularly when the gentleman transporting the coffin decides to interrupt his trip with a stop at the pub and then ends up too drunk to drive the wagon.

If you’re interested in picking up a copy to come to your own conclusion, head to the Adelaide Plains Library in Two Wells.

There are also two films of the book that have been made- one from 1967 starring Terence Stamp, and a more recent 2015 version starring Carey Mulligan.

Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge for 2020 were many local students.

Summer reading club a hit with kids This summer saw almost 40 children take part in and complete the region’s free Summer Reading Club Challenge over the recent school holidays.

Adelaide Plains Council has been facilitating the program for the past few years at its Two Wells library and recorded around 60 children register to take part.

This theme for the challenge this year was “40 days in 40 Ways”, with

each participant required to read a minimum of 10 books throughout the summer school holidays.

Adelaide Plains Council mayor Mark Wasley and councillor Kay Boon attended a special celebratory event at the library on Wednesday February 19, with the mayor presenting each child with a certificate of participation and an ageappropriate book.

“It is a wonderful thing to see so many young children reading,” Mayor

Wasley said.

“Reading is a lot of fun; it’s good for your imagination and you learn so much about the past and also the future.

“It’s a great thing to support your local library.”

While the books were greatly welcomed and brought smiles to the faces of those receiving them, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea, cake and drinks provided by library staff afterwards.

Georgie visits Two Wells South Australian author Georgie Brooks will visit Two Wells this month to promote her debut memoir.

Georgie grew up in Adelaide, worked as a solicitor, university researcher, stay at home mum, hobby farmer and teacher.

Her book “A Year in the Mud and the Toast and the Tears”, is an entertaining and humorous memoir about her “tree change”.

This free event, hosted by the Adelaide Plains Library service, will be held at the Two Wells Bowling Club on Thursday March 26 from 1pm.

Plans under way at Xavier College Xavier College is now accepting enrolment applications for its new educational offering in Two Wells and the greater Adelaide Plains region.

Demand has been positive for the college which will open its doors to students from R-6 in 2021. Preparations are now under way to finalise plans for the college so construction can begin.

The pathway for secondary years will continue to be offered at the Gawler Belt campus until such time there is sufficient demand to start offering senior levels at the Two Wells site.

The R-6 primary campus in Two Wells will be part of Xavier College, having many of the traditions and practices established at the Gawler Campus, in a primary school setting.

The emphasis and importance of pastoral care through the Oratory or Home Class structure in House formations will be maintained, and relationship building with our students and their families will be a priority.

At the core of the Xavier Community is the Salesian ethos that permeates all that we do at Xavier.

Our core values of RUAH (respect, understanding, affection and humour) will form the backbone of the way we educate and nurture our students.

Horizon’s partnerships build successful students Horizon Christian School’s annual ‘Meet And Greet’ evening held last week provided another great opportunity for parents and staff to build strong partnerships.

Under the spreading shade of the established trees, the courtyard was transformed into a vibrant space where parents, grandparents, staff and students chatted over a complimentary meal.

This ‘getting to know you better’ evening is one of the many important events held through the year at Horizon and is designed to strengthen relationships with families and build positive partnerships.

Alf and Marissa Bennett have Eden in Year 4 and Brock in Year 1.

Eden is starting her fifth year at Horizon, having started in Foundation, and the family has enjoyed ‘Meet and Greet’ evenings each year.

“The food was great, it’s a nice relaxed environment and the children love it. It’s a good way to catch up with parents and meet new families,” Marissa said.

Craig and Katie Price and their family are new to Horizon with Alexa in Year 4 and Ryan in Year 1.

“Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. The food was amazing and the evening was so informative and so organised,” Katie said.

“We’ve been blown away by how easy the transition to Horizon has been.”

Principal, Mike Clisby, said the school’s partnership with families is vitally important.

“These great relationships are the basis for strong partnerships which build the success of our students,” Mr Clisby said.

1000 reasons to celebrate at St Patrick’s Technical College St Patrick’s Technical College has reached a remarkable milestone of 1000 apprenticeship and traineeship sign-ups in South Australia.

Three Year 12 Metals and Engineering students, Charlotte Simmons, Jordan Ranasinghe and Christopher Skelton, share the title of 1000th Apprentice and have started their trade in welding with employer Century Engineering.

The sign-up is a unique undertaking for St Patrick’s Technical College and Century Engineering, an Australian owned business providing a range of end-to-end engineering solutions and services in Edinburgh North, with three students signed at once with the same employer.

As part of their school-based apprenticeships, students will study Year 12 with the college, working towards gaining their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), at the same time studying a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication.

Principal of St Patrick’s Technical College, Mr Danny Deptula, said this is a monumental milestone for the Year 11 and 12 specialist trade training school.

“Our 1000th sign-up demonstrates the importance of vocational education, hands-on learning and flexible study options to skill and prepare secondary school students for jobs now and of the future,” Mr Deptula said.

“We are committed to providing Australia with future skilled employees by supporting young people through best practice in training and education.

“Foremost, the establishment of partnerships and programs with industry, employers, government and training providers, to jointly develop the skills and capabilities required for current and future workplaces has been crucial to the successful outcomes of apprentice and trainee sign-ups.”

This monumental milestone for the specialist trade training school in Edinburgh North has placed the count over 1000 instatements of apprentices and trainees since the college’s inception in 2007.

March 1 Clean Up Australia Day, a day that encourages all Australians to take to their local park, beach, bushland or streets and help collect rubbish.

Individuals and local groups can either organise a Clean Up Site or volunteer to join an existing Site.

Mackenzie’s 18th

YEAH, it’s a tough one.

Bullying occurs in every institution, at every age.

Schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods, friendship groups, marriages, and families.

My girlfriend in Sydney called me up the other day to share her woes.

Her son was punched in the back of the head on the school bus on the way to the annual athletic carnival.

It was unprovoked, and it was filmed.

She is devastated, understandably, as is her son.

She is questioning the school and their role as protectors.

How did they handle the incident?

What were the consequences for the offenders?

How will they ensure her son is kept safe in the future?

Should this be escalated to a criminal matter?

It is not the first time.

The way the school handles an incident like this speaks volumes to its policies, procedures, and culture.

We send our children to institutions who are attended by a mass of individuals, from a mass of different families, who all have their own culture; beliefs, attitudes, morals, standards, normalcies.

There are plenty of special days in March, religious days, and days dedicated to certain causes, both nationally and internationally, here are just a few of them.

International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the contribution and achievements of all women.

It is an opportunity to remember the barriers that women have broken through, and the accomplishments they have made despite barriers.

Two Wells teenager Mackenzie Cummins, celebrated her 18th birthday last month with a party at her home on Sunday February 9. Mackenzie’s friends and family organised an array of delicious food and a beautiful sponge cake, with her partner, Bradley, surprising her with a birthday breakfast outing. Happy 18th Mackenzie.

A shout out to local vet, Dr John Katakasi of Adelaide Plains Veterinary Surgery, who took part in the Tour Down Under’s Ride For a Reason challenge earlier this year. Dr John pictured here right tackled the 162-kilometre stage from Norwood to Murray Bridge in honour of friend and former employee Cheryl Waters who passed away from cancer in 2018.

Dr John completed the ride in four hours and 38 minutes and raised more than $5000 in the process. Fantastic effort Dr John.

Days of March

We expect that school to uphold the greatest standards, because it needs to set the benchmark, both morally and legally, to ensure the physical and mental safety of our children.

And, at the end of the day, it is up to all of us, as we engage in our institutions daily, to speak up when we witness an incident of an individual having their own power stripped from them by another, or a group of others.

We need to speak up if we are a victim, or if we see an individual victimised.

When we see an employee, friend or family member being spoken to, or treated in a derogatory manner, even just being frozen out of a conversation, we need to address the imbalance.

Bullying is present in many different forms, both seen and unseen, both physical and mental.

We need to hold each other to account.

Because the behaviour we walk past, is the behaviour we condone.

What are your thoughts Bec? It seems the issue of bullying becomes more insidious as each year passes.

Do you think our institutions do enough to address bullying in its various forms?

Do you think we as individuals

need more education and guidance as to how we can identify bullying behaviours and act in a positive way that will assist others?

This is a tough topic Nat and one I’m sure will divide opinions.

According to most reputable websites, and even the dictionary, bullying is “repeated behaviour that hurts, harms or humiliates a person either physically, or emotionally”.

This can take many forms, happen virtually anywhere, and is increasingly (and scarily) all too common in the faceless world of cyberspace.

It’s not age-specific, although generally young people are more commonly victims.

It’s not race, or gender or work, or skill-specific.

It’s not the same for each individual.

And it’s definitely not something that can be ignored.

All the evidence suggests the growing suicide rate, particularly in our young people has, in many cases, a direct link to bullying.

You may have seen the campaign “Do it for Dolly” or “Dolly’s Dream” in honour of 14-year-old Australian outback girl, Amy “Dolly” Everett, who sadly took her own life after experiencing an extended period of bullying.

Her story touched thousands of

people and started a national campaign to get people talking about the detrimental effects of bullying; to have a conversation, and more importantly, to take action.

I feel this is the most important point; take action.

We cannot be bystanders, we must be “upstanders” (and yes, this is an official term).

We must strive to be people who speak out against bullying.

To call bullying out.

We must show our support of others by our actions and interventions.

And we must teach our children to do the same.

Young people have a unique power to prevent bullying.

Recent research indicates as many as 50 percent of bullying situations stop when a peer intervenes.

We need to aim higher.

The conversation must become part of our daily rhetoric, like eating healthily, getting enough sleep and exercising, until it becomes second nature.

So, talk to your children, your friends, your workmates about bullying and its effects.

Start the conversation, keep on talking and take action where you can.

Be an upstander.

International Day of Happiness. This year’s theme is Happier Together, focusing on what we have in common, rather than what divides us. Everyone wants to be happy - and life is happier when we’re together- so let’s celebrate our common humanity.

March 21 World Down Syndrome Day. Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics or health. Adequate access to health care, to early intervention programmes and to inclusive education, as well as appropriate research, are vital to the growth and development of the individual.

March 22 World Water Day and highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The theme for 2019 is to ‘Leave no one behind’ and encourages people to consider marginalized groups as these are often overlooked and discriminated against when they try to access safe water.

Lesley’s love of brownies IN last month’s Echo, Girl Guides SA asked for stories from anyone involved in the Girl Guides or Brownies movement over the years, for its ‘Where are they now?’ campaign.

Lesley Scott of Lewiston contacted the Echo to give readers an insight into her experience with Girl Guides. Here is her story…

“They ended up having backto-back callouts all day so I helped them on the radio.

“It was assumed I would join after that.

“I looked at joining when I was a teenager but I lived in town and the brigade was too far away.

“I’ve been able to apply my skills on a wide range of incidents, from vehicle accidents, grass fires and structures fires to storm damage and flooding, as well as taking part in interstate deployments and local strike teams.

“But it’s all the extra things that come with it that give you the greatest sense of satisfaction; helping your community, making new friends and teamwork.

I grew up in England in 1941, and when I was four, we moved to Hythe, Kent, England, where my grandma and family lived.

I was able to go to school and as I got a bit older, joined Brownies, which I absolutely loved.

The lady in charge of us – we called her Brown Owl – did her utmost to make this time enjoyable for us.

She had a couple of helpers, one named Margaret, who I still keep in touch with at Christmas.

She is in her nineties now, of course.

We were taught country dancing, square dancing, morse code and semaphore.

A couple of times we went on the bus with the Morris Dancers when

they went to a country town to show off their dancing.

It was fun hearing the bells on their ankles as they danced.

Sometimes they would set up cartoons for us to watch.

One day, we were taken down the road to a telephone kiosk to learn how to make a telephone call!

Because of course, very few people had telephones then, only doctors and businesses.

I was so surprised when the head mistress of the local school answered me.

Another time we were give a daffodil bulb to grow.

When they were ready to flower, we took them back with a bunch of wild flowers we had picked to be

judged.

I remember winning a prize for the primroses I had picked.

Looking back, I think everybody won a prize for something.

Since then, I was married for 26 years, lived in Penang, Malaysia, Germany, and Wales.

Then we moved to South Australia in 1969.

I bought a house in Clarence Park which I lived in for 26 years, and worked in an office for 26 years, full time.

I moved to Lewiston, an animal husbandry area, 23 years ago to concentrate on showing my dogs.

I think I will have to stay here another three years to make the magic number – 26!

“I have gained so many skills in the process; leadership, mateship, teamwork, community engagement, radio, driving trucks, the list is endless.”

With recent significant rainfall to most cropping areas in the state speeding up summer spraying, PIRSA Biosecurity SA is urging growers to consider potential distance of impact before starting their spraying.

Manager, rural chemical operations at PIRSA Biosecurity SA, Michael McManus, said producers must be particularly alert to NOT spray during inversion conditions in order to avoid spray drift.

“We urge broad acre farmers to consider their neighbours, particularly those with vineyards, and to not underestimate the potential distance of impact before spraying summer weeds,” he said.

“Actively growing grapevines are highly susceptible to off-target herbicides so as part of any planning process

it is vitally important to be aware of sensitive crops in your surrounding area, even those many kilometres away, and check weather conditions are suitable.

“Inversion conditions are likely in the early morning, evening and at night.

“We believe undertaking planning before any spraying operation is a key to avoiding such issues. Please also make sure you use the largest droplet size possible, according to the label.

“Good planning will help make sure you don’t drift into bad neighbour territory, and it will also help to avoid any potential impacts on local and export markets.”

Mr McManus reminded growers Biosecurity SA will investigate all reports of farm-

ers spraying in less than ideal conditions.

“Being careless when spraying can not only result in unnecessary damage to someone else’s crops but can also hit the hip pocket,” he said.

“Biosecurity SA will pursue all reports of anyone who has either deliberately or negligently caused damage to others by not following regulatory requirements. If caught and prosecuted, offences can carry a maximum penalty of $35,000.”

Growers in some parts of the state now have access to technology to help ensure spraying does not take place under inversion conditions with the implementation in September last year of the Mid North Mesonet system.

“Cereal and grain producers in the Mid North now

have a dedicated tool at their disposal this summer to assist with their summer weed control programs and help avoid spray drift,” Grains Producers SA Board member and MN Mesonet committee member, Peter Cousins, said.

“The Mid North Mesonet system, allows producers through their mobile phones and computers - to assess more applicable, up-to-date weather information, and in particular to identify weather inversions near their properties.”

Farmers who use Delta T to assess when to spray should be aware strong inversion conditions can occur when the Delta T is in the ideal range of between two and eight, so farmers should check local weather conditions as well.

Zerner jags Jolly Joker title Sonia Van de Kamp reports Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) held a fun, card-themed trail ride last month.

The event saw people taking part as walkers, children being led and riders at the club’s first ever ‘Find the Jolly Joker’ event at Clara Harniman Reserve and surrounding trails.

Participants were asked to follow a trail around the Lewiston wetlands, picking up playing cards at three different checkpoints along the way.

This was followed by a shared lunch back at the club rooms.

We had multiple winners on the day, with James Zerner winning the major prize of two tickets to the Super Loop 500 car race for coming home

with the Jolly Joker.

APEC would like to extend a special thanks to Karina Alexander for mapping out the trail for the day.

Without her help we would not have been able to hold such a successful day.

Thanks also to the APEC committee who worked tirelessly throughout the day, including making yummy salads and desserts for everyone to share.

Carla chasing her dreams • From back page She is excited about selection into the academy again and hopes to build on the skills and direction she gained being a part of the academy in 2019.

“I really enjoyed the academy last year and the games we played as it was a faster pace,” the softly spoken Year 9 Horizon Christian College student said.

“I played many positions on the court and my skills have definitely improved from being a part of it all.”

Academy representatives must commit to monthly trainings, guided by high performance coaches, along with a camp, before playing in the Mellor Olsen Academy Games in October.

Carla is keen to learn as much as she can and is a talented sportsperson in general.

She has represented her school in rugby, played football for Two Wells when she was younger, and has also been an APNA association representative in the past.

While Carla is also a keen basketballer, currently playing for Owen in the Adelaide Plains Basketball League, netball is her focus.

“Netball is my passion, I love everything about the game,” she said.

“The teamwork, the match-

Passionate about netball, Carla hopes to one day play at state-level. play, the skills I learn and the challenge of it all.

“I would love to play at statelevel one day.”

Carla is one of the youngest members at the academy and is working hard to chase her dreams.

Her mum, Chantel Harris, is understandably proud.

“She puts in so much hard

work,” Chantel said.

“We are so proud of her and the person she is.”

In a nod to Carla’s talent, she was recently invited to take part in the School Sport SA state Under 15 team trials in April.

Football and netball start getting ready for 2020 The 2020 season will soon be under way with the APFL/APNA season kicking off on April 18 with a grand final replay against Hummocks at Port Wakefield.

Senior footy training is well under way, held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm.

Senior football teams will have two trials in coming weeks.

The first against Willaston at Willaston on March 28 and the second at Two Wells against Snowtown/Blyth on April 4.

Junior and Senior colts have commenced footy training with the U17s on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm and U14s from 6pm on Mondays.

These training sessions will revert back to Tuesday and Thursday once the cricket season has finished, check our facebook page for updates.

U8 and U11 Football training will begin on Thursday March 12 from 5pm while Auskick will kick off on Thursday April 30 from 5pm.

Female football training is also underway, every Wednesday from 5:30pm.

This is a competition for girls that are keen to have a go at footy for their first or second time.

There are two age groups U14s (girls turning 12, 13 or 14 in

T20 match celebrates 20 years for AVCC Jane Pogas reports: Angle Vale Cricket Club celebrated its 20th season with a fun, family day on Sunday February 16.

Past players and committee members were invited to join in the celebration, with a T20 match featuring past and current players, being the major event.

Teams were loosely selected with a mix of past and present members; Gen Y versus The Millennials.

The morning session saw a father-son T20 match with a fancy dress theme.

The club commenced 21 years ago with an Angle Vale Primary School team that consisted mainly of Year 7 players who were heading off to high school.

Their parents came together and registered a team in the Under 13 competition of the Para Districts Cricket Association.

In the early days, the team played on the school oval and operated a canteen out of an esky.

The club has grown to now field four junior and AVCC’s founding team, and coach, in the Para District Cricket Association 20 years four senior sides in the Para Districts competition. ago included, Ben Pogas, Darko Wharton, Neville Meredith, Adam Metcalfe, Aaron AVCC member Austin Smith with SACA player, Patrick Page.

TWGC ladies have it down to a tee Bec O’Brien gives a first-hand view Ever thought you would like to give golf a try but didn’t have the skills or confidence to step onto the green?

Don’t know what size club to use when?

Have no idea how to score?

Need advice on technique?

Well, that’s me to a tee (pun intended!).

But fear not, the lovely ladies at Two Wells Golf Club are keen to steer you in the right direction.

The club held a come and try ladies golf session last month, and yours truly went along to hear the advice of top club players Kathy Stubing and Judi Frost as they demonstrated all things golf related, from swing technique and driving to chipping and putting.

It was a fun, relaxed and informative session with a lot of laughs along the way.

It was learning the basics of the game but not in a traditional way, and I’m keen to give it another go.

Luckily the club is holding another ladies come and try session on Tuesday March 17 starting at 9.30am.

Mystery at Mallala The new Mallala Motorsport manager, Damian Reed, hosted a brand new event on February 8, a "Mystery Event” held on the Skid Pan from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Three drivers shared a car, an ideal way to gain entry level into motorsport.

the first time were quite diverse from a Ford Falcon daily driver to Aden Breen’s track Corolla ke70.

Half of the vehicles were street driven and driven there on the day, and the other half had been on the track before.

All participants finished the day and enjoyed the new event.

Two Wells Bowling Club roundup Irene Giannikos reports The Pennant season is coming to a close with only a couple of minor round matches to be played.

The first and second Saturday sides are both second on the ladder, in their respective divisions and will be playing in the finals commencing March 14.

The third Saturday side are safe in their division and will not be relegated.

The Wednesday Men’s teams have not fared so well, with the first side sitting 6th on the ladder and the second side 8th but three games clear of the 9th side, so will also avoid relegation.

The Thursday Women’s team has struggled this season, having gone up a division, and will likely be relegated.

The club is gearing up for the installation of the synthetic grass greens and will be selling the existing turf in late April.

However, there are two major tournaments scheduled prior to the replacement of the grass, one on Friday April 10 and the other on Anzac Day April 25.

These events are well supported and bring people from all over the state to participate.

Night bowls continues on Tuesday evenings until March 10.

This is a great opportunity to meet new people and take in some gentle exercise with a bit of friendly rivalry.

People of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Over the last month we have had a visit from the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre where greenkeeper Bob Hogg showed the children how to play the game using the club’s special “Jack Attack” bowls, that are designed for children under eight years old.

The local Scouts group also came out and had a game of bowls recently, with Brian Johnson showing them how to play the game.

The club is always looking for new members, both social and full members.

Kirsty Stirling was selected for the Northern Metropolitan Netball Academy’s 2020 squad.

Kirsty called up for academy Bec O’Brien reports: Congratulations to gun athlete Kirsty Stirling, 15, of Two Wells, who was recently selected for the Northern Metropolitan Netball Academy’s 2020 squad for the third year in a row.

The talented dancer, runner and netballer, made the squad for the first time after an intense trial process last month.

Year 10 student Kirsty, who won the 120m

Little Athletics Girls Bay Sheffield event at Glenelg in December last year, currently plays netball for her school, Trinity College, and Tango in the South Australian District Netball Association.

The elite academy she has been selected for aims to identify and nurture talented players, coaches and umpires and provide pathways to develop their netball skills.

As a squad member, Kirsty will take part in the Mellor Olsson Academy Games in October this year.

Two Wells netballer, Carla Harris, has been selected in the Northern Regional Netball Academy for the second year running following an intense two-day selection and trial process last month.

Fourteen-year-old Carla was one of only two girls from the Adelaide Plains Netball League chosen for the elite academy, which aims to identify and nurture talented players, coaches and umpires and provide pathways to develop their netball skills.
