MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, WE CAN successfully navigated the challenges presented by the pandemic. Determined to thrive, we expanded access to our programs; welcomed new participants, volunteers and donors; and strengthened collaborations. Our stellar and culturally diverse staff strengthened our participantcentered approach and services. Board members guided overhauls to our fiscal and operations management, updates to policies and procedures, and investments in technology to build pathways to sustain our work into the future. Our fundraising efforts resulted in a balanced budget, strong reserves, and a successful 20th Anniversary fundraising campaign to support strategic initiatives and build our endowment. What is more important than what we did in 2021 is how we did it. Despite the ups and downs of another extraordinary year, we stayed true to what we call ‘The WE CAN Way.’ Simply put, it is the culture of our organization. It is centered in respect, high-touch engagement, meeting women where they are, empathy, and candor. You will find these traits in our staff, our volunteers, and our leadership. They are baked into how we behave as an organization. Because of you, we embark on our third decade of work from a position of strength and optimism with The WE CAN Way leading the way. Thank you for your support and continued belief in our mission.

VOICES In February of 2019, sitting on the doorstep of divorce, I abandoned everything I had accepted as ‘normal’ for the safety and sanity of myself and my children. I worked up the courage to seek help and I found WE CAN. Hands shaking and heart racing, I discovered an organization full of strong, empathetic, competent people. I found my hope. The WE CAN staff listened and I was given appointments with an attorney who offered guidance in my divorce and child custody proceedings. Through this process, a volunteer at WE CAN kept in touch and made me aware of the PathMakers program, where I was matched with an amazing mentor. Today, I am completing my BA in Psychology with a 4.0 average. I am a full time behavior therapist for children on the autism spectrum, and, aside from being a mom, it’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. I have gone from being penniless and homeless to now building and purchasing my own three-bedroom home with Habitat for Humanity. Thanks to WE CAN, I have grown from an anxious, self-conscious introvert not knowing where to turn into a confident, independent, motivated, successful woman full of drive, direction and determination, being asked to share my journey with you.
J.H., Grateful Participant 5
VOLUNTEERS We value the expertise, dedication, and passion of our volunteers. A woman’s first interaction with WE CAN is with a trained volunteer who listens with empathy and assures confidentiality. Upon gaining an understanding of the woman’s needs, the volunteer identifies the most appropriate services and encourages her to make use of them. Volunteers at WE CAN provide professional one-to-one consultations, conduct workshops, offer office support, serve on committees, raise funds and expand awareness. Their dedication and willingness to share their time, experience and knowledge mean that women on Cape Cod receive our services free of charge.

OUTER CAPE HEALTH SERVICES (OCHS) WE CAN’s collaboration with Outer Cape Health Services (OCHS) is a long standing and unique partnership of interagency referrals. WE CAN often calls upon their team of Community Resource Navigators, led by Brianne Smith, Community Resource Navigator Program Manager, to assist a participant who presents a complex set of needs. “We always feel good about sending someone to WE CAN,” Brianne said. “ We know that they will be treated with respect, and the services provided by their staff and volunteers are invaluable, empowering individuals to make choices that are best for themselves and their lives.” From left: Brianne Smith, Gina Broz, Scott Beless, and Teri Nezbeth

COMMUNITY SUPPORT We value our community, whose support makes the work we do possible. At WE CAN, we do not do this work alone. Our large volunteer and donor community ensures that we continue to extend our reach and build awareness. Our supporters are passionate champions of our mission and dedicated ambassadors for our work. Here are just a few examples of the many ways the community supported WE CAN and spread the word in 2021. 20th Anniversary Fund Celebrating 20 years of important work at WE CAN, more than 125 donors, inspired by the leadership of Fund Co-chairs David & Gail Oppenheim and Sandy Wycoff & Jeff Lang, stepped forward to surpass our $500,000 goal.
WE CAN @ Home Our supporters hosted gatherings in their homes to introduce others to our work.
Upper Cape Outreach Committee Upper Cape residents built awareness by distributing materials, attending community outreach events and introducing WE CAN’s work to the region.
20th Anniversary Auction
With a full schedule of social media and print ads, group presentations and one-to-one meetings, we continued to engage supporters and spread the word in 2021 by offering: New website

Eldred’s Auctioneers and Appraisers “Women in the Arts,” an online auction, raised funds and created awareness of WE CAN’s work as bidders across the country secured one-of-a-kind works of art.

A WE CAN participant “paid it forward” by working with 3 Monkeys in Harwich Port to stage a spectacular IYKYK (If You Know You Know!) event. Those in the know were treated to a multi-course chef’s evening, while WE CAN was treated to a generous donation!
Veronica Beard Two WE CAN supporters worked with this newly opened Newbury Street fashion house to host an event with a percentage of proceeds directed to WE CAN and bring knowledge of our work beyond the bridges.
