Inspiring young minds, creating possibilities END OF TERM Term 1 will conclude on Friday 8 April and the school will close for the holiday break. North Perth Primary School will reopen for students at 8.30am on Wednesday 27 April. Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful break with plenty of opportunities to do the things you enjoy with the people you care about. WEET-BIX KIDS TRYATHLON Good luck to all our students who will be participating in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon on Sunday 10 April. Have fun and ‘live the challenge.’ ANZAC COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE North Perth Primary School will be holding an Anzac Commemorative Service on Wednesday 27 April at 2.15pm. The service will be held in the front courtyard of the school. On that day students are encouraged to wear uniforms if they are involved in such groups as Scouts or Cadets. HELP WANTED: Over the Easter weekend the school was inappropriately used and deliberately damaged. In addition to leaving their rubbish (including alcohol containers), damaging a water fountain and gates, and scratching the verandahs, our unwelcome visitors also dismantled the early childhood picnic table and chair set and used it to build ramps for their skateboarding. This destructive behavior is extremely disappointing and costly to rectify. It has also been reported to Police. We are now seeking a handy parent to repair the picnic table so our young students can use it again. Please contact Corrina Cook in reception on 9328 7104 if you’re able to help us. Thank you. I encourage everyone to help protect our beautiful school by reporting unusual noises or suspicious behavior to School Watch Security 1800 177 777 or Police 13 14 44. UNI-ACTIVE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM As part of the school-based Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) program the Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year 1 students participated in a movement skills assessment. The assessment of six skills was conducted by the Uni-Active team from the University of Western Australia. Comparative to other Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year 1 children in Perth, the children at North Perth PS had better catching and kicking (soccer) skills but scored lower in the jumping and throwing assessment items. The children at our school were very similar to children in the same year group for the skill balance. The table below compares North Perth PS results to school children of the same year group across Perth. Balance Kindergarten

Consider the following: children aged 4 – 7 years of age are in a rapid development phase and with ongoing exposure to the range of FMS they may improve substantially; some skills are not expected to be fully developed at this age e.g. overarm throw not fully developed until 10 years; all children vary greatly in their rates of development: and
it takes 240 – 600 minutes of instruction and practice in each of the FMS for most children to master the skill.
What happens next 1. Individual FMS Reports for Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Kindergarten children will be distributed to parents shortly. Each report includes the child’s rating on each of the skills and is accompanied by skill sheets with tips for parents on what to look for and fun games to play. 2. Classroom teachers and Physical Education teacher will analyse the results and implement targeted programs to improve students’ gross motor skills.
3. The Uni-Active Program (Kindergarten – Year 3) will continue next term on Friday mornings 7.45am – 8.30am. The program will start on Friday 13 May and run for 8 weeks until Friday 1 July. Running and Catching will be the two skills focused on in Term 2. Enrolment and payment can be completed online at http://hpeu.com.au/uniactiveenrolment.

STUDENT BANKING ASSEMBLY The Commonwealth Bank School Banking program commenced at North Perth Primary School in 2014 and it is superbly coordinated by a team of committed parents. There are more than 100 students participating in this savings program. Banking Day is before-school every Wednesday in the Library. This program provides children with the opportunity to make deposits into their personal Commonwealth Bank YouthSaver account at school each week. The program is about how often your child makes deposits, not how much they deposit. Information about the program is available from the parent volunteers.
School Banking Wednesdays 8.15am in the school library
To encourage regular savings behavior the program offers an exciting Rewards Program. Every deposit earns your child a Dollarmites token and once they’ve collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a reward. On Tuesday 3 May, Cred, one of the Dollarmites, will be visiting the Kindergarten and Pre-primary students at a special assembly at 9.00am on the Room 16 – 18 verandah. They will hear all about the program and will be provided information to take home. Parents are welcome to attend and will be able to open an account for their child after the assembly with a School Banking officer. You will need to bring along your driver’s licence or passport and your child’s birth certificate. Alternatively, parents can download and complete the application form available at commbank.com.au/schoolbanking, or open an account at any branch or online if you’re an existing Commonwealth Bank Customer.
You’re invited to the North Perth Primary School
“Meet the Dads’ Night” The Fathering Project will be there to help fathers and father figures to meet, talk, share and support each other in trying to be the Best Dad you can be.
