Welcome

Hello everyone, where to begin? It has been a very productive Winter for those of us here at the magazine with our print run doubling and distribution area increasing including major hotels, motels pubs, clubs and information centres around the Northern Rivers. Some readers may have noticed during the winter issue that we now have a stand at the Wollongbar Newsagency (generously looked after by their amazing staff). So thank you to everyone who has called, written and emailed requesting a place at Wollongbar to pickup copies. Bailey has been settling into a new social scene at a local preschool twice a week and he may have even found himself a girlfriend, not too bad for a 16 month old little fellow (Daddy is very proud and Mummy has said that Bailey doesn’t get his charm and charisma from his father). Bailey has had a busy month featuring in a local commercial for Healthy North Coast and being on the Winter cover of the Northern Rivers Family Magazine. We have also added new and interesting sections in this issue with Health & Wellbeing, Sport, Fashion, Suburb Profile, Local Arts and Performances and Competitions (Spring prize pool worth over $800!). Don’t forget if you miss an issue you view online copies by going to our website. We also have a Facebook page, which features upcoming events, community groups news and local business news, offers and specials. So make sure to jump online and like our page, share our page with friends and family and post feedback about previous and future issues.

10 Please continue to let us know about upcoming events and activities, local news, sporting events and charity/community groups. We will still place them on our Facebook page if you miss the print deadline. Once again, we hope that you will enjoy reading this issue.

I love my shop 5 words to describe the shop Fresh, friendly, creative, unexpected & interesting.
What is the best part of your job? Being creative and working to customers’ “briefs”. It is so much fun to put together floral designs to suit our customers’ requests. It is also amazing what other people see and the flowers and colours they choose. Every day we have customers needing flowers for different occasions, and each occasion brings with it it’s own story. What we love about our shop? The atmosphere that is created by the fresh product we receive on a daily basis, the creative team that work together making the shop look beautiful and full of fabulous designs, and the community that is really supportive of what we do. What do we bring to the plateau? Our shop brings a piece of the floral world to our community. We are really fortunate as a team to be able to travel and get involved in the ever changing world of floristry. Alison spent a few days with German floral designer Bjorn Kroner in Melbourne in June, bringing some great new trends and design ideas fresh from that trip back to the shop to display. Earlier this year Mark travelled to Europe to work with German master florist Gregor Lersch and Belgium designer Moniek Vanden Berghe learning some great new techniques and trends. We visit flower shows, demonstrations and workshop as often as we can to make sure our customers are seeing the latest trends and ideas on offer. The best part about working on the plateau? The community – we have so many people just popping in to say hi and stopping to smell the flowers and enjoy our displays … it’s so nice.

What products do you stock? We offer a range of flowers, foliages and plants from both local and national suppliers. We have daily flower deliveries ensuring our stock is always fresh for our customers. Most popular item This time of year sees the early spring blooms such as erlicheer, the small double jonquil with a big perfume and personality just walking out the door. They come in almost daily and we just love them. Flowers that are currently in season that we love Cymbidium orchids, cattleya orchids, blushing brides, andromeda and sweet peas. Something people might not know We have delivery runs to Ballina and Lismore, three sometimes four times a day, and deliver to almost anywhere in the Northern Rivers… including Byron and Yamba. We belong to Interflora and frequently organise deliveries of flowers, chocolates, fruit and wine nationally and internationally for our customers. We have online facilities for browsing our design range or placing an order, just visit alstonvilleflorist.com.au. For those of you who are technologically savy, we are on both Facebook and Instagram, with daily updates on the shop, the stock we have in, tips and shop news. Please join us. Most recent shop achievements After Mark (co-owner) won the Interflora National florist of the year in 2011 and 2012, Alison, our shop manager, won the Interflora NSW and ACT florist of the Year Award in April 2013. Alison will compete for the national title when she represents both the shop and NSW at the National Competition to be held as part of the Interflora annual conference in Darwin in October.

Chamber news
Lisa Dillon | AWCC Member
We are excited to announce our new Alstonville Wollongbar tourist brochure is available and currently being distributed around both our region and interstate. Parking issues continue to be important to the Chamber, to business owners and to the general community. We have recently written to the Council, asking for more information on plans for increasing parking behind (below) the main street. I have now concluded my term as President of the Chamber of Commerce. Our Secretary, Margaret Orr, Treasurer, Sandra Denison, and Membership Secretary, Candy Fitness, have also finished their two-year contributions, and I'd like to express my thanks to all of them for the many hours they've put into the Chamber. Lindsey Bidwell, a Chamber Committee member for a short time (and editor of this magazine), has also contributed a great deal to the Chamber this year.
AWCC Business Awards The Chamber of Commerce and many of our Plateau businesses had an exciting night on June 21st. The winners of the AWCC inaugural Business Awards were announced at a gala event at the Nightcap Restaurant, Wollongbar TAFE, attended by Mayor David Wright and Councillor Sharon Cadwallader.
Master of Ceremonies was John Murray, Regional Manager of the NSW Business Chamber, who had appointed a panel of independent judges for the competition. The Chamber was very grateful to Wollongbar TAFE for hosting the event, and very appreciative of the efforts of their hospitality students who provided a really delicious meal, as always. Congratulations to all business owners who took the time to enter. The winners were: Accommodation & Attractions - Summerland House Farm
Congratulations to Peter Mehan who is the new President, and thanks to Mary Weingarth and Lindsey Bidwell who is continuing on the Executive. Thanks also to Richard Lutze who has rejoined the Executive, plus Margie Heffernan who has joined for the first time.
Comment: Outstanding creative product development over the last 12 - 18 months with an expansion into the educational tourism market, the establishment of regular markets that showcase our region’s extensive produce and a very successful rebranding exercise.

Shop Update Weddings - what we’re loving now!
Right now when we think of weddings we think vintage! The vintage wedding; it inspires old wine barrels for tables, suitcases as stools, bunting, hessian, lace and florals, and oh how we love the florals! This fashionable wedding theme is a beautiful way to feature some old favourites. The simple flowers that for so long have been over looked. Flowers like carnations, daisies, dahlias and delphinium are all making a comeback. But it is also a style that allows us florists to showcase other flowers that you don’t normally see, or are not a common choice for wedding flowers. We love using unusual textures like the native Tetragona nut, a silvery white eucalypt with clusters of small square shaped nuts. Andromeda flower sweet small bell shaped blooms that cascade beautifully in bouquets, available in white and pale pink. Cymbidium orchids with their beautiful array of colours are a top pick for this season and don’t be mistaken by Green trick it is a carnation but is often mistaken for moss or grass. The beauty about the vintage wedding is that there are no rules, there is no set colour theme, there is no limit on how many flowers you can use and every flower works, for us the flower lovers it is the perfect style. So if you have a vintage style wedding coming up or you just love the look for your home, don’t limit yourself to the flowers you know, try out some hidden gems, you might just find a new love. For a large array of unique blooms on display to choose form visit Alstonville Florist at Shop 17 The Plaza.
Savannah Coffee Lounge
Savannah is celebrating it’s 4th birthday, after re-opening in Sept 2009 Linda and her husband Greg wanted to reinvent the business taking it from its former deli/takeaway café and transforming it to become the relaxing and friendly coffee lounge that it has become today. Linda says the first two years were a challenge, but with the bypass just around the corner believed that the town would come into it’s own and have not been disappointed. Linda and the girls say goodbye to Elizabeth (Beth) who has been part of the team for nearly 3 years and wish her well and good health in her retirement. They are very happy to welcome Belinda Smith who is joining them as part of the kitchen staff and know that she will continue the same good quality of cakes and meals that customers have come to enjoy in the past. It will be a sad but exciting day when Linda hands the business over to the incoming owners of the café, having achieved the goal of operating a successful business in the town Linda says that she is looking forward to the next stage of life, spent retired and travelling with her husband Greg. “It’s time to hang up my apron and let

Jessie & Brendon A husband and wife pair passionate and dedicated to provide you with the exceptional customer service, quality product and inviting atmosphere that is ever present at Savannah's. Formerly from McLeans Ridges, Brendan moved to the Gold Coast at 19 focused in retail management and later met Jessie a self confessed coffee addict and coffee barista. Together we have lived on the Gold Coast for 8 years. It is our ambition to utilise this knowledge and experience to develop upon the wonderful foundation already established by Linda, of which we are grateful to be a part of. As we have both been brought up in small country towns we long to return to where we feel at home, being a part of the strong sense of community and relaxed environment present in Alstonville. We look forward to seeing you soon to share in a perfectly made coffee, delicious food and the same friendly service.

The Plateau Photo Competition Winners
All images were blind marked independently by two judges and notes compared. This led to a short list of finalists with one image a stand out winner. While the number of entries this year was less than in 2012, the quality and creativity displayed clearly demonstrated the care and interest of the individual entrants.
Helen Armstrong | Runner Up
Mark Davis | Winner
Helen gave a sense of perspective in her image of the Federal Hotel in Alstonville against the twilight sky. It is always a challenge to correct for low light and the image was sharp and well composed.
Marilyn Perkins | Highly Commended
Marilyn gave a simple scene a quirky and human focus with the glorious yellow backdrop lending a sense of identifiable place for locals. The image was structured to stimulate curiosity and generated a sense of contemplation for the viewer.
Mark Davis has rendered both the near and far views superbly with an invitation to step into the picture and bask in the warm afternoon glow. The image captures both the plateau and its rural context in a well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing way.

Gardening Hints Wollongbar Garden Club
What’s wrong with my Pot Plant? Most homes have at least one pot plant either indoors or on a patio/courtyard, so it might be a good time after winter to check why it is not looking as good as when you purchased it. Some EXHIBITIONS simple checks might prevent you tossing it into the 6th September to 27th October 2013 “Signature Tablecloths” - Four signature bin.
Crawford House
table cloths will be displayed, including a large white linen cloth from St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ballina, which was found in a cupboard in 1999, and the Eureka GFS tablecloth.
Has the plant been fed? Fertilisers don’t last long in potting mix as it tends to be a small area and the chemicals are leeched out with constant watering. It is easy to burn roots in a confined space so a slow release fertiliser is better. You could try something organic like Dynamic Lifter or a slow release like Osmocote.
8th November 2013 to 23rd February 2014 “Undercover and Unseen” - Underwear from the Museum collection. Is the potting mix getting old?
MONTHLY MEETINGS
These will be held on Sunday; 15th September, 20th October and 17th November, 2013 at 2.00pm in the Community Resource Centre at the Museum. There are always interesting speakers and visitors are welcome. Page 12
Is the drainage blocked? Many pots have only one drainage hole and as the plant grows the roots can expand and block the hole. You can repot into a larger pot, use one with multiple drainage holes or raise the pot by using pot feet thus allowing better drainage. Drainage saucers are best avoided too, as they can rot the roots. Are the roots being eaten? Curl grubs are the larvae of the scarab beetles. These “C” shaped grubs hatch underground and live off the roots of plants. If a previously healthy plant starts to decline it is worth checking the root area. Dig around and remove any grubs. If the problem persists, pot into fresh potting mix.
After a few years, potting mixes tend to lose their quality and start to break down .This is what has happened when the mixture sinks down in the container. It is a good idea to repot your plant with new mixture every 3-4 years. If possible use a good quality potting mix. Many of them contain fertiliser and water crystals.
Have you watered your plant? It is easy over winter to forget to water the pots. Many of us are guilty of the opposite and overwater forgetting that the plants do not require as much water in the colder weather. To check, test the soil with your finger. If the top 4cms is dry, it is time to water.
Has the mix become water repellent? As potting mixes age they can become water repellent and the water will run down the inside of the pot rather than seeping into the root area. Repotting will solve this problem but soil wetters break the surface tension and allow water penetration.
Do you need to repot? It is easy if you take advantage of your old pot. First, layer some potting mix in the bottom of the new pot. Place the old pot inside the new one and pour potting mix around it , gently tamping it with your fingers. Then remove the smaller pot and it will leave a well that is the perfect size for the plant’s root ball.

Alstonville Mixed Probus Club On May 27th 1973, three balsa rafts set sail for Mooloolaba, a small fishing town north of Brisbane. The ocean currents and the wind brought them to Ballina in November. What adventures did the twelve men on board experience? We the members of the Alstonville Probus Club were keen to find out. In May the club members visited the Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum to see the remaining raft. We were amazed that on each of the rafts four members could live peaceably in such cramped quarters. We were told a couple of monkeys, carts and parrots helped reduce their worries and tensions. At our next club meeting we invited councillor Jeff Johnson to come and tell us the background to the amazing adventure. We were told the balsa logs were cut when the moon was full and the sap at its best. This was the reason the rafts survived further than the Kon Tiki raft. Only wooden pegs and thistle ropes were used in their construction. Only winds, currents and sextons guide their way. The food available was limited mainly fish and the rainwater trapped on the roofs of their cabins. We look forward to November 15th to 17th when Ballina will hold celebrations to recognise the achievements of these men and their amazing balsa raft experience forty years ago. Pictured above: 1) Model of the balsa raft at the Ballina Navel & Maritime Museum. 2) Councillor Jeff Johnson receiving a vote of thanks from treasurer Anthony Nalder.

He spent the next five years in POW camps in Egypt, India and Australia.

Alstonville Football Club Alstonville Hockey Club Fun Run Success On Sunday 4 August, Alstonville & District Football Club hosted our annual JUNIOR CARNIVAL for players from Grade 6 to Grade 11. The club has been holding this very successful event since 1975 and this year catered for 98 teams and some 850 players and their families. This was our biggest carnival for many years utilising all the fields and available space at Geoff Watt Oval, with teams from Pottsville, Mullumbimby, Casino, Grafton as well as many local clubs. This was a fantastic team effort from the club with everyone working together to ensure this year’s carnival was a huge success. Players and their families experienced a fantastic day of football, wonderful food, great entertainment between games from the jumping castle, face painting, Prem Central and the Big Dog, all in perfect weather. All players were rewarded at the end of the day with a medallion supplied by the club. The carnival committee would like to thank all the volunteers and teams who contributed to such a wonderful day that provides fun for all our young players and promotes our sport in the best possible way.
Alstonville has a very strong hockey tradition, going way back to the formation of the club in 1932. Consequently the Alstonville Hockey Club is one of the oldest in the Far North Coast Competition. The club is fortunate to have had consistent and generous support from the local community over those many years.
This year we had three senior women’s teams, two senior men’s teams and teams in each of the junior age divisions from Minkeys up to Under 15s in the FNC Competition. 2013 has once again been a very successful season for the club, with three of our five senior teams qualifying for the finals and the Under 11 and Under 13 sides also qualifying for finals. As in past years, we have also had a number of our senior and junior players represent the Far North Coast in state championships from Under 13s up to Over 45s. Junior players are looking forward to their Presentation Day at our Gap Road fields on Sunday 15th September. The Senior Presentation Night will be held at the Federal Hotel in Alstonville on 21st September. We are now gearing up for the 2014 season and extend a warm welcome to prospective new senior men and women and junior players interested in signing up.

The second Alstonville Wollongbar Fun Run Challenge was held on Sunday the 28th July and was a great success with over 400 competitors enjoyed the beautiful winter sunshine. Entrants ranged from ages 3 to 85, and it was lovely to see so many families out enjoying themselves together. There was a wonderful feeling of community amidst the crowd. There were four events, all starting at Alstonville High School: Elders Alstonville 10km Run, Summerland House Farm 1km Junior Dash, Summit Fitness 5km Run and Newsxpress Wollongbar 5km Walk. The runners were very positive about the event, despite the tough, hilly course (hence the CHALLENGE in Alstonville Wollongbar Fun Run Challenge). The Fun Run was a joint venture of Wollongbar Public School P&C and Alstonville High School P&C Associations. Local businesses were extremely generous in providing sponsorship and random draw prizes for participants. The Ballina Shire Council maintenance crew also did an excellent job cleaning up the cycle track ready for the day. For more information visit www.alstonvillewollongbarfunrun.com.au
Making the perfect smile What is Health? I enjoy most aspects of dentistry, but I get a real buzz out of doing cosmetic enhancement of people's smiles.
Many people don't realise that their smile can be improved through a variety of techniques and cutting edge new materials. Small issues can often be easily overcome. Through bonding techniques we can close gaps, make teeth appear straight and lighten tooth shades. There is no better feeling than seeing a patient look in the mirror after having a treatment and flash a beaming smile. People often say to me...
"Why didn't I do this years ago?"
I think some people feel that having cosmetic treatment means getting the "hollywood smile" which may appear a bit flashy but the treatment doesn't need to be like this. I believe the result should be more subtle and that it should not be noticeable. By working with each patient we can achieve the result they want. I particularly like working with composite resin which we bond directly to teeth and can shape and smooth. We are able to get fantastic results and at a fraction of the cost of porcelain. In one sitting a patient's smile can be transformed. Dr Justin Pakin Plateau Dental Care
A simple question… The answer which many of the decisions you make on a day to day basis. Everyone knows that health is essential to getting the most out of your life. So what is health?
The best one line answer I have come across is from the World Health Organisation. Their guiding charter, which was written in 1948 defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. So the first idea I take from this is that just because you don’t feel sick or have a disease does NOT automatically mean you are healthy. The second idea I see is that even though
Health & Wellbeing
you may have the physical body of an Olympic athlete combined with the serenity of a monk in a Himalayan cave if you are not able to interact with people in a social way you are not completely healthy. Can you see how the answer to the simple question “What is Health” can only be answered by examining all aspects of your life? This is why a holistic approach to health is so important. I also feel that it is virtually impossible for any one health practitioner to have a complete knowledge of ALL areas of health and that a team approach is the best way to go. Explore Australia’s greatest waterway. From its source in the Snowy Mountains in NSW, the Murray flows 2520 kilometres to the Southern Ocean in South Australia through the Riverland, down to Murray Bridge and onto the Lakes and Coorong.
Wow spring has arrived early! About three weeks early from weather forecasters! But that is fantastic news for us on the plateau, especially after a few wet summers. I have just put together a few ideas to put into your wardrobe for this Spring. As well some Race-day ideas for our coming Ballina Cup, Lismore Cup, Melbourne Cup and the northern rivers famous Tabulam Races. For details and dates for these events view our events section on page 23.

Many ladies don’t realise that with Race Wear Fashion comes very hard and fast fashion rules. Here is a quick and easy guide on what to wear and not wear during the Spring Racing Carnival.
The Coorong is a popular place to fish, hike, camp and birdwatch. It has more than 275 different plant species and 200 bird species spread across almost 47,000 hectares of stunning lagoons and saltpans. They are best when kept to just one component (i.e. a shirt or a scarf) or is it possible to get away with wearing a pattern like stripes or spots on an entire ensemble? Yes if you are game. Field research says yes. Everyone can wear stripes and prints from head-to-toe if you do them right. The best boutiques know how to sell the best way to flaunt the lined look. NORPA opens doors to ‘new’ home
As interest snowballs, the calendar girls spark a global phenomenon. Calendar Girls is adapted by Tim Firth from the film of the same name and based on an inspiring and uplifting true story. It is quirky, poignant and hilarious. Rehearsals are well advanced under director Fran Legge with an experienced and very talented cast. An entertaining and thought-provoking theatrical experience is guaranteed.
NORPA marked its 20th anniversary this year by moving back into the newly renovated Lismore City Hall on July 19th. The meticulously renovated hall also features covered outdoor spaces, new seating, acoustics, a redesigned foyer, bar and access. In addition, Arts NSW has come on board with NORPA to contribute $100,000 to new lighting for the theatre.
Calendar Girls comes to Ballina Players. In Players’ latest production a group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women’s Institute, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns, their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements.
The Lismore City Hall is set to enter a new golden era, thanks to a $6 million upgrade largely funded by Regional Development Australia, the 1960s building has been transformed into a premiere performing arts and community venue for the NSW Northern Rivers region. The hall is now the new home of one of the nation’s leading regional theatre companies, NORPA.
“What a great way to mark 20 years of NORPA creating and presenting performing arts in this region,” says NORPA Artistic Director Julian Louis. “This renovation has a huge impact on the type of shows we can bring to the area. There is better access with a new loading dock and Calendar Girls will be followed in November by storage space for sets and road cases. The Eurobeat - Almost Eurovision. Tickets are available at Just Funkin Music, River Street, phone 6686 2440.
Show Week
The Lions and Apex Clubs of Alstonville along with the Alstonville Show Society recently announced the dates of the 2nd Annual Alstonville Show Week. The 9 days of fun and entertainment will run from 19th October to 27th October 2013. The week will showcase Alstonville starting with a community day in the Alstonville Plaza on Saturday, Arts and Craft market in the Main Street on Sunday. Other events include The Heartfelt House Garage Sale, Trivia Night, Wine Tasting, Miss Showgirl Dinner, The Alstonville Walking Trail, Floral Display and lots of community activities around the village.
also means that NORPA, as a theatre company in residence creating original works, has access to better rehearsal spaces and facilities. I’m particularly excited for our technical staff led by Karl Johnson who for years has worked in very difficult conditions – he’s got a real spring in his step now!“ “The fact that Lismore City Council has invested in this significant upgrade is testament to the value of performing arts in this community, and in a regional context more broadly. NORPA has a long history of creating original works that connect on a grassroots level with a vibrant and diverse local community. We bring non-arts organisations together with local and national theatre practitioners to create theatre works that tell regional stories in an entertaining, engaging way.” Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell said the new venue firmly places the city on the national stage in terms of its ability to host world-class shows, further embedding the arts as a major contributor to the economy in the region.
