Welcome

Since printing the last issue the Chunky Monkey Creative team has been very busy putting together a map of the Russellton Industrial Estate as well as travelling around the local area to bring you the places we love. Oh and Bailey has turned 10 months old and has found that walking around the studio pulling on chairs and chewing everything he can reach and saying Dad! Dad! Dad! and Mumumumum is far more interesting than just playing on a rug. Didn’t think I would have to have the birds and bees talk with my son for a few years yet but after taking Bailey down the main street of Alstonville on Valentines Day, he got hugs, kisses, flowers and even a balloon from several of the amazing local shop owner girlfriends he has apparently found. We then decided to have two hours to ourselves for a romantic dinner and doubled up on babysitters (Daddy’s mistake) so little Bailey scored himself a double date for his first Valentines Day. The coupons are back again and don’t forget that the more you cut out and use these coupons the more likely local business will be to continue to offer our local residents these great savings opportunities. We would like to thank the local community as we have received a lot of positive and constructive feedback from residents in and around town. Especially at the Twilight Christmas Markets where we met so many lovely characters at our stall. We have also been having discussions with the Chamber of Commerce and local business owners about the future direction of the winter issue and beyond.

Several changes have been made from the last issue including the decision to wrap the cover photograph around the entire cover as it will hopefully help to make our Magazine stand out in the mail when delivered.

Once again, we hope that you will enjoy reading Two Four 7 Seven as much as we did putting it together.

Chamber news

Lisa Dillon | AWCC President

Hope you all enjoyed the Christmas best-decorated business competition in December. Many businesses went to a great deal of trouble, and their windows and interiors looked fantastic! Not only that, but several business owners and staff dressed up for judging day as well! Ashley and his team at Alstonville Quality Meats (who won first prize in the competition) created much mirth and admiration with their costumes - so much so that a costume competition will probably be added next Christmas. The Christmas markets, associated with the Carols by Candlelight, were a great success too. This year we hope that changes to our Public Liability insurance will mean that stall holders will be covered under the Chamber's policy, which will make it possible for many more people to sell their wares. The Chamber calendars, produced from our earlier photographic competition, were on sale from late October, with approximately 500 being sold. There was plenty of positive feedback (beautiful photos, small enough to post, high quality), and some not-so-good (too small, too expensive, calendars are becoming obsolete in favour of phones). The 2013 photo competition will be launched soon, but the question of whether to produce a calendar this time, is still to be decided. The aim of the calendar was to provide a product that would promote our beautiful area to the outside world, with the funds from their sale being put back into future promotional activities. Some feedback we received from one of our points-of-sale was that the calendars should have supported a charity. However, the Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organisation itself (albeit not a charity), which is run by volunteers. All profits must therefore go back into Chamber activities. These activities aim to support our local businesses and to foster a vibrant local economy. Some interesting events are being considered for this year (of which more next time). However, one of the challenges for the Chamber of Commerce is lack of man-power (or people-power if we wish to be politically correct). While we would love to organise a fun event (a bed-race and a beanie competition were two that were suggested), our Chamber executive members have their hands very full with the administration of the Chamber, attending various meetings, lobbying Government departments, keeping our members informed, and so on. So if any members of the community would be interested in joining the Chamber to help with promotional events, please contact me. The next Chamber of Commerce meeting is on Tuesday, March 5th, 5.30pm, with a sausage sizzle and drinks provided by the Chamber. The venue is the Alstonville Garden House in Wardell Road (just beyond the Rous Road turnoff, on the right). Please RSVP to our secretary, Marg: info@alstonvillewollongb.com.au Visitors very welcome.

Places we love Killen Falls located just below the Emigrant Creek dam at Fernleigh is a spectacular waterfall dropping into a large, cool waterhole within a rainforest gully. Ferns and mosses thrive in this moist location. The sub-tropical rainforest remnant is roughly 2.7 hectares in size and surrounds the waterfall. This particular location remained out of reach for early logging and farming due to its steep and rugged terrain.

An opportunity exists to walk down to the waterfall and explore behind the waterfall in the dark realms of a large cave. Beware though as the cave is valuable habitat to several species of bats, some of which are threatened species so please be quiet. Back outside the cave, the rainforest beholds a large diverse selection of flora species local to the area. There are also many threatened species of plants that thrive in this protected gully. Some protected and threatened species of fauna exist here too that include the platypus, water dragons and rainforest pigeons. There are two beautiful walks that you can do from the Emigrant Creek Dam car park the Water Walk

and the Boodgeragah Walk. The Water Walk is a 200m wheelchair-accessible educational trail, which takes you through recently replanted rainforest from the car park to a lookout over the dam. The tall and shady (make sure you pack some mozzie repellent) rainforest trees, which you walk through, have all been planted since 2003! The Boodgeragah Walk is about 500 metres long and takes you through regenerating rainforest along Emigrant Creek, downstream of the dam, to the very top of Killen Falls. This is a very special place and has one of the remaining stands of intact Big Scrub rainforest in this area. Boodgeragah is the Wi-abul word for fig tree and, on this walk; you will find an ancient fig tree guarding the base of these spectacular falls. The track is quite rough, especially compared with the Water Walk, so please take care. Those adventurous enough to follow what appears to be an older track that veers off of the main path towards the end on the right can take the very steep and sometimes slippery track down to the creek itself and then walk upstream a short way

Emigrant Creek Dam & Killen Falls to the caves under the falls and the beautiful swimming hole. Picnic Spots There are a few picnic spots near Emigrant Creek Dam, which are accessible from the car park. • At the top of Water Walk, near the lookout over the dam, there is a picnic table under the shade of the newly grown rainforest. • For the more adventurous, take the 500 metre Boodgeragah Walk down Emigrant Creek and picnic at Killen Falls. Please remember that there are no bins at Killen Falls and you are expected to return to the car park with your trash and use the bins there. Rous Water, Ballina Council and the Big Scrub Rainforest Land care Group have all combined their resources and knowledge to rehabilitate the riparian zone of Emigrant Creek and suppress the weeds threatening this valuable rainforest remnant. Drive to Tintenbar then turn onto Friday Hut Rd for about 3km. Turn right into Killen Falls Rd and the carpark is 400 metres away.

Introducing Ballina Region Community College

B

allina Region Community College has recently relocated to 494 Bruxner Highway, Alstonville.

The move has enabled the college to provide more classrooms and facilities. Narelle Millar, Executive Officer of the college, boasts, 'Our student lounge has the best view. On a clear day you can see beyond the Ballina bar!' The college's new premises mean an increase in the number of general purpose and computer training rooms. There is even a 50 seat conference room available for hire, with its own catering facilities. The college is now poised to more efficiently and professionally meet the ever changing demands of the local training market.

People wishing to work in areas such as Aged Care, Children's Services or Training and Assessment need to be aware of major changes to these qualifications which have recently been introduced and which have implications for students. One thing is certain, to be competitive in today's market place it is essential to maintain currency of your skills and qualifications. Contact the college to see how training can help you. The Australian government has recently announced the introduction of a national Unique Student Idenitfier (USI) in 2014. This will make it much easier for individuals to track their qualifications, training entitlements and records of achievement.

The Scout Group wish to thank the local community for helping them raise muchneeded funds last year for equipment through ‘Scout Job Week’ and their raffle. In July Cubs and Scouts answered calls from local residents to weed, mulch, wash cars, dishes and dogs, tidy yards and sweep paths. Grace School of Deportment & Grooming Grace School of Deportment and Grooming was established by Elizabeth Lund. The school has been achieving amazing result’s with local teens for over 4 years now, assisting them with their selfesteem, encouraging them to hold their head high and believe in themselves.

The teenage world is not an easy one to exist in there is a lot of unwelcomed pressure, judgement and often confusion regarding where they fit in. It’s no wonder why the courses Elizabeth runs have been welcomed and thoroughly embraced by our community. Elizabeth, a local mother of 4 children has been involved in this industry all of her life. As her mother Denise Lund ran a Model & Casting agency along with Deportment and Grooming School on the NSW Central Coast for more than a decade. “Some of my earliest memories are attending classes with my mother watching on as the girls would catwalk, learnt makeup techniques, corrected their posture and talked self-esteem. In my teens I move onto assisting with teaching, attending castings myself and was often on location with fashion events and shooting commercials”. “Once my mother retired, I went on to marry and have a family of my own. I am now a mother of 4 sons – my boys are incredible young men and we are very close. Our school puts a strong emphasis on building positive relationships and there is defiantly a special bond that develops over the duration of the course between the students, myself and our wonderful tutors”.

Lessons taught at grace are very much life lessons - and often the message their mothers are telling them. It’s just that as teens we don’t tend to want to hear them from our parents. This is where I see the value in hearing these messages in a positive environment with like-minded girls of extreme value. We are not about seeking approval of others or changing our appearance to conform to media’s image or ideal. The girls are encouraged to learn and develop their own style and stand tall amongst a crowd. Our courses run during the school holidays and consist of a 4 day intensive program with a graduation and fashion parade on completion of the program – a certificate is issued for the course. Grace Deportment is a major sponsor of the “Miss Country Girl Australia Quest” This year, long term Grace student “Liberty Bennett” will be heading to Sydney to compete in the final with the chance to win a Modelling contract with a prestigious Sydney agency – and of course Elizabeth will be travelling to Sydney to watch and support Liberty at the final. Elizabeth is also involved in styling and presenting fashion events at Lismore square. “I have always found Events to be a very exciting aspect of this industry and this year I will be furthering my study in events management at university”. The next course will run from the 15th – 18th April, at the Lennox Head Community Centre. Some of the topics covered in our courses are Age appropriate make-up, Skin care, Etiquette, Posture & Catwalk Modelling, Speech & Social Etiquette. Phone Elizabeth for further details on 0427 918 400.

Community Programs If you told your friends you were going to MOPS and that your child was a MOPPET what would they think? That you had taken up a job cleaning and that you were training your Preschooler to follow in your footsteps? Well, you can actually be a MOPS Mum without even looking at a bucket or MOP! In fact you can even do MOPS with a cup of coffee in one hand, a yummy piece of cake in the other, and know that your little MOPPET is safely being looked after and entertained by wonderful working with children safety approved volunteer carers. MOPS mums are Mothers of Pre-schoolers, and MOPPETS are their preschool children (aged 0-5years). MOPS Australia states: “MOPS gets Mums. We understand the unique needs, challenges and joys in this vital season of early mothering. At MOPS every mum is welcomed, accepted and challenged to reach her potential and recognise her influence with her family and her world. A MOPS group is a dynamic,

Mothers Of Preschoolers

inviting environment where women can come just as they are to build friendships, be encouraged and gain practical parenting strategies, while children are lovingly cared for in a MOPPETS program.” MOPS at Alstonville has been running for just over 10 years at the Alstonville Baptist Church every second Friday during school Term, with currently about 50 Mums on our books. It is organised by a team of young Mums from various churches in the area from Lismore to Ballina to Evans Head, and is nondenominational and non-confrontational, with mums from all walks of life. A team of 5 mentors including founding team mentor Merlene Hellyar, is there to give support to the Mums in a non-judgemental way. Informative videos and entertaining local guest speakers provide a wide range of relevant topics for the Mums. Speakers have included: our Mentors Sue Chamberlain,

Current Exhibitions at Crawford House Museum Don’t miss our current exhibition, “Heads, Necks, Hands and Tootsies”, featuring costume accessories from the Museum’s collection. From Grandpa’s bowler to hats fit for the Queen; from mink and crocheted collars to Christian Dior gloves, it highlights what we have always known - that many accessories were status symbols! You will feel proud when you see the Akubra hats which are a distinctive part of our culture; and baby boomers will be reminded of accessories which were worn with love and pride in the 1940s and 1950s but are rarely seen today. The exhibition finishes on Sunday 10 March.

Wollongbar Original development around the Wollongbar area began in 1870 on the intersection where the new roundabout is located near the Tafe (Bruxner Hwy and Sneaths Rd) with a general store, post office and a few other buildings. With the redevelopment of a farming parcel of land there was a subtle relocation in 1973 to where Wollongbar is now (1 klm closer to Alstonville on the intersection of Rifle Range Rd).

Rd this will more than likely come close to doubling the current population of Wollongbar. The land on which the tennis courts are currently located just inside the Russellton Industrial Estate has been tagged for sale, which will see further development of the Industrial Estate. This will hopefully mean more jobs and in turn higher local incomes for shop owners. The tennis courts will be relocated to a new sporting facility, which is in the works currently with Ballina Shire Council and should incorporate Cricket, AFL, Rugby league, Rugby Union, Tennis and other sports.

Between 1870 and 1975 residents were slow to move to the area (325 residents in Wollongbar by 1975). A mains water and sewage network installed by 1978, served to boost population growth and in 1988 there was approval given for development of 700 residential blocks of land. This was the beginnings of the Wollongbar that it is today with over 5000 residents currently calling this area home.

The Wollongbar shopping centre was established in May 1988 as part of the Blair Athol development that consisted of three stages. The developer of this estate was Terry Collins and took place over two stages with Stage 1 consisting of a hairdressing salon, supermarket, newsagent and butchers shop. Stage 2 was completed a year and a half later with a greengrocer (later

There are two of the original owners still doing business today with Harry Lee (owner of Harry Lee’s Chinese Restaurant) and Dr Stefahn Dunn (owner of Wollongbar Medical Centre). This group of stores is now known as “The Palms Shopping Centre” due to the developer relocating his palms from across the road from what is now the Wollongbar Public School. All these years later they can still be seen around the centre and help to create a visual brand for the wonderful people working the stores within. Russellton Industrial Estate Robert Gibson, son of Samuel and Mary (nee Russell) was born on 18th of November 1849 and at the age of 19 he first travelled north to “The Big Scrub”. He was so amazed with the lands that he saw that he returned in 1871 with his parents who settled at Mcleans Ridges while Robert selected 303 acres in the area which is now known as Wollongbar, naming the property “Russellton”. Robert’s farmhouse can still be seen standing and was built during the 1880’s.

After retiring from farming in 1917 and moving to Ballina, “Russellton” was divided into three separate 101 acre farms. They gave one lot each to their sons Samuel, Hugh and Hector. The Industrial Estate as it is today, stands on land that was once part of the “Russellton” dairy farm.

On the 20th of June 1878 Robert married Elizabeth Simes. Life must have been busy for the couple in the years to come as they had 12 children (eight boys and four girls) together.

The Russellton Industrial Estate continues to exist and thrive today with plans underway for the provision of more Industrial land in the near future.

Robert died in July of 1929 and his wife Elizabeth on 25th of November 1938. They are both buried in the Wollongbar cemetery.

Chinese Medicine & the Season of Autumn The season of Autumn has important characteristics in terms of health. Late summer, which we are experiencing now, is warm & damp. This can give rise to conditions of damp & damp heat. Common manifestations are gastrointestinal infections, phlegmy coughs, allergies, yeast or fungal infections, & pain in joints and muscles.

As the season changes from hot to cool, especially if there is a rapid change, we are more susceptible to invasion of pathogens such as colds & flu. Whether we succumb to these will depend on the relative strength of the pathogen in relation to our own strength and immunity. It is a good idea to address any deficiencies, especially of lung qi, at this time of year, before we become sick. There are classic herbal formulas that are very effective in boosting immunity. As autumn approaches the dominant element is dryness. The organ associated with autumn is the lung. The emotion that can affect the lung is grief. Sadness may be associated with autumn's shortened days as the seasonal cycle of life slows down or decays. Normal sadness after

events of death & loss is a normal & necessary emotion. However if it is prolonged it can lead to illness, often seen as breathlessness, restricted breathing, tiredness, depression & low immunity. Prolonged worry will also affect the lungs. On a spiritual level, Chinese medicine sees the po, the most physical aspect of the soul, residing in the lungs. It affects physiology & feelings, and is a direct manifestation of the breath of life. This energy is very important in maintaining our deepest essence, or constitutional strength, as well as defensive qi/immunity. For all these reasons it is wise to look after all aspects of ourselves at this time of year. This could mean addressing any obvious or on-going problems, or improving vitality and immunity, in preparation for autumn and winter. To discuss these or other health issues phone Brigid at Mingmen Acupuncture, 0431702560, for obligation free advice. Or for an appointment phone Alstonville Complete Care 66281654.

Autumn Fashion Fashion is a little like time travel, always borrowing from the past but living in the future. Forecasting trends ahead helps inform our choices of what to buy now. What will be seasonal, what will last, what will be capturing our attention. Fashion forecasting can see more creativity and nostalgia forming a basis of two key themes in Autumn / Winter 2013. They’ve titled them Reflective lifestyle and Expression style. Remember it’s all about expressing yourself in your own style!

Wollongbar Garden Club

At the first meeting of the Wollongbar Garden Club for 2013, the members were delighted to present Carol Bonney representing Quilts4 Kids with a cheque of $205. This was half the profits of their plant and flower stall at the Chamber of Commerce Christmas markets. Started in 2006 by Diana Cooper, Quilts 4 Kids is a community project under the auspices of OUR KIDS. Members make and donate quilts to children (ages from new born to 18 years) who have spent time in Lismore Base Hospital or other local hospitals including Brisbane. In 2012 over 30 quilts were provided to those in hospitals. The cheque was donated to enable the quilters to buy wadding; often the most expensive part of the quilt as fabric pieces are sometimes donated by supporters of this group. The photo shows Carol Bonney displaying one of these quilts, and Club vice president Coraline Marks holding the cheque. Wollongbar Garden Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month usually in the Wollongbar Community Hall, at 10am. Visitor’s welcome.
