5 Welcome
What better way to enjoy our beautiful part of the world than to pack the car with picnic supplies, a few outdoor games and a camera. Well… that’s exactly what Lindsey and myself did, with our 7 month old son Bailey in tow. It was a beautiful day and we didn’t know where we would end up for lunch. You know that old saying “it’s all about the journey, not the destination”. About two hours into our mystery drive we spot a sign “Victoria Park” and by divine chance my stomach rumbles and we know it’s going to be a special day. Bailey’s first picnic, first bush walk and our first family memory put into print. We hope that you will enjoy reading TwoFour7Seven as much as we did putting it together.

Chamber news
lisa | awcc president
Thankyou to the new owners of TwoFour7Seven for continuing to give The Chamber of Commerce some space for a report – and there is a lot to tell you! Firstly, we’re very pleased to report that the Chamber has been successful in lobbying for a sign to Alstonville on the new roundabout at the southern end of Ballina. When the Ballina Bypass opened we dropped off the map so to speak, so we are ‘visible’ once more (we’re still hoping for more signage on the highway). And talking of signs, it’s great to see the new Information Board installed in Freeborn Park. Thanks Council. Recently we were thrilled to launch the first Plateau calendar, which was sponsored by The Northern Star and Ballina Shire Advocate, and features the 13 best photos from our winter photo competition. The result is a high quality calendar that shows off our beautiful area. It’s also a compact size, so can easily be posted to friends and family for Christmas. The calendar is selling for $8.50 at a number of outlets, including the Alstonville Newsagency, Wollongbar Post Office and Summerland House Farm Grocery Shop. Thankyou to all who have voted in the Alstonville Rotary / Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Excellence Award – you’ve done your bit to encourage good customer service which will help spread the word that the Plateau is a congenial place to shop. The Chamber is currently running a Best-Dressed Business Competition for the Christmas season. More than 20 businesses are participating, and each have a voting box and voting slips on their counter, so if you think one of them deserves the Popular Choice Award, please take the time to vote. On December 7th the businesses will also be independently judged and the winner will receive $1000 worth of advertising in The Northern Star (which is our ever-generous supporter). The Chamber of Commerce Christmas markets are on again, on Saturday, 15th December, beginning at 3.30pm at the Apex Pavilion at the Showground. They will be followed by the Combined Churches Carols by Candlelight, starting at twilight. This event is under-cover and will go ahead no matter what the weather. If anyone would like to have a market stall, please contact Sandra Denison on 0411 247 400.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! From the Alstonville Wollongbar Chamber of Commerce Committee – Marg, Sandra, Candy, Mary, Peter and Lisa. Email the Chamber of Commerce at info@alstonvillewollongbar.com.au

Places we love Just over a hundred years ago a vast and almost unbroken lowland rainforest covered 75,000 ha of Northern NSW in the roughly circular area presently enclosed by the towns of Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. Professor Len Webb, a leading Australian rainforest ecologist of international repute, has declared the 'Big Scrub' as - 'the largest area of tall subtropical rainforest along the east coast'. By the year 1900 the rainforest had been subjected to almost complete destruction. One of the last surviving remnants of the original rainforest can be found at the Victoria Park Nature Reserve, also known as the Big Scrub or Red Scrub due to the rich volcanic soil. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing day out with the family in the Northern Rivers. Today only 11 viable remnants survive which reflect the character of the original rainforest. Half of these are under 15 ha. The Victoria Park Nature Reserve is one of these smaller areas with a portion set aside for the boardwalk while the remainder of the reserve consists of two small triangular patches of 4 ha where an ongoing regeneration program is conducted jointly by the NPWS and the Richmond River Naturalists' Club.
Victoria Park Nature Reserve
Despite the small size of the area an unusually wide variety of animals occur in the reserve. The quiet observer may be rewarded with glimpses of the redlegged pademelon, the water rat and at least two species of possum. We may never be able to fully appreciate the variety and extent of the original 'Big Scrub', however these remnants serve to reinforce the value of conservation. At last count there were 152 Tree species recorded in this one small reserve, an indication of the highly developed complexity of this vegetation subform. The reserve contains many fine examples of white booyong, yellow-wood, bumpy ash, red bean, Moreton Bay and strangler figs in the upper canopy.

Another bush nut Macadamia tetraphylla, although widely planted, is also restricted in its natural range to the volcanic shield. So take an easy stroll along the accessible boardwalk and you’ll immediately be transported to a tranquil tropical wonderland. While ancient fig trees and majestic black beans tower above you the Bangalow palms and ferns grow up from below. Take a moment to absorb the cool quiet of the rainforest and you might catch a glimpse of the shy redlegged pademelon or the colourful wompoo fruit-dove.

N O I T A C LO
I love my shop Describe your practice... Mingmen Acupuncture treats people with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
This includes acupuncture, Chinese herbs, moxibustion, cupping, dietary & other advice. The appropriate treatment is determined by reaching a diagnosis in terms of the patterns found in the individual. What inspired you to start this business? I wanted to make the benefits of Chinese medicine better known & assessable to the people of Alstonville & Wollongbar. What can be treated? The best known benefits of acupuncture are pain relief. This is because it is very effective at treating pain for example neck, shoulder, back & other pain. But there are also many other conditions for which Chinese Medicine is very effective – chronic fatigue, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, women's health issues including menopause & fertility, insomnia & anxiety to name a few.
Does acupuncture hurt? Some people are reluctant to try acupuncture because of a fear of needles. However the needles used are extremely fine, I aim for treatments to be a pleasant rather than an unpleasant experience. If anyone does have a needle phobia I can use the “finer than fine Japanese needles & technique. This can be more suitable for sensitive patients. Is Chinese medicine safe? All Chinese medicine practitioners are registered nationally. This requires everyone to comply to high standards in terms of qualifications, experience & practice conditions. All herbal formulas that I use have an Australian licence, which ensures all are safe in terms of purity & safety of ingredients. There is a rigorous licensing process & anything with potential problems does not pass. Any possible interactions are known & documented. The truth is that the Chinese
Mingmen medicine approach is infinitely safer than a continual reliance on pharmaceuticals. Tell us about your move. Mingmen acupuncture has just moved to Alstonville Complete Care. I see a lot of benefits in working in this practice, with the many different modalities, where all health needs can be addressed in one place. It is also a very quiet and pleasant environment for myself and for clients. As well I am looking forward to being able to concentrate on my work as a practitioner which I love, rather than business concerns which I don't. What do you enjoy about your work? It is hugely rewarding to successfully treat people and help them improve their lives. It is good to be working with people who have taken responsibility for their health, and are open minded in finding ways to improve their well-being.

Alstonville Florist
An unfortunate incident at Alstonville Florist!
I was out on a delivery run when I received a phone message from Di to say that a car had crashed into the Alstonville Florist shop front. At first I had little information and experienced a sense of disbelief that such an accident could occur.
shop took on a sense of normality... somewhat empty but cleared of the clutter. Thanks to the efforts of a very capable and committed team, we were able to open the doors on Wednesday morning.
On returning to the plaza it was a surreal experience to see so many emergency vehicles and frantic activity; and it was very reassuring to find Di and Mark, my business partner in the crowd. There are no words to describe the feeling of inadequacy knowing that someone was seriously injured and trapped under the vehicle in the shop; and I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services team, the ambulance and police who worked so well together.
The accident affected many people in the community both directly and indirectly. So many people called into the shop to offer words of comfort and recognise the abnormality of the experience and we humbly express our thanks.
Once the emergency workers finished their job and invited us into the shop, there was an overwhelming need to try to return order to the chaos. It did take quite a few hours and assistance from Alstonville Cleaning Service before the
Members of Mrs Parish’s family have made regular contact with us and it is wonderful to know that her recovery is progressing well. We, together with so many members of our community, wish Mrs Parish a good recovery and we look forward to the day we can welcome her back to check out our window display. Kerry

Alstonville Community Preschool
Preschool Futures Hang In The Balance! The Alstonville community is very close to having a permanent site for our own purpose-built Community Preschool. With the current Baptist Community Preschool closing its doors by the end of 2013 the future of Alstonville’s children rests with the councillors of Ballina Shire Council and the Department of Education. The proposed site at Crawford Park sets aside a section at the northern edge, for the building and grounds of a new community preschool. The proposal by Ballina Shire Council utilises the current informal car parking area and will create 35 formalised car park spaces. Alstonville Community Preschool Inc. (ACP), a not-for-profit community based organisation made up of volunteer preschool parents and community members has been working to secure a site for two years. Over 20 publicly and privately owned properties have been considered. However, being surrounded by a ‘green belt’ in an area where land is at a premium and commercial rents are high means that suitable sites or buildings are rare. The Crawford Park site may be Alstonville's last chance at retaining a Community Preschool. At a Public Hearing held by Ballina Shire Council on the 1st November over 100 people attended as part of the Community Consultation process. There were 27 representations made by members of the community with 24 of those in favour of
the proposal. There has been substantial media interest since the public hearing with ACP being contacted by local press, radio, television and other media. Apart from being the last possible site within Alstonville, the Crawford Park site is ideal from many perspectives. Being close to the town centre the site will be accessible to all. Families without access to motorised transport will be able to walk to preschool. It is within the same vicinity as the primary and high schools for pick up and drop off and would enable the preschool to serve as a hub to access broader community facilities. Due to the central location of the site educators would have more opportunities to develop links with their community, their schools, and local activities and initiatives. The Crawford Park site would ensure the preschool is in an area that fosters and promotes community cohesion and a sense of belonging. Councillors will now vote at a meeting of council on the 20th December for or against the proposal. Quite simply, without a Community Preschool in Alstonville there are not enough spaces in the neighbouring preschools and day care centres for Alstonville's preschoolers. Alstonville families deserve a choice in their child’s preschool provision and that choice needs to be local. For more information please contact Alstonville Community Preschool Inc. on alstonvillepreschool@gmail.com.au

Plaza Happenings Well with Christmas just around the corner, the Plaza has been decorated and the shops full of Christmas goodies….. watch out for Santa if you have been good!! Over the past few months the Plaza has had its fair share of media publicity with the most unfortunate accident involving a long term resident Betty Parish. Our thoughts are with Betty and her family during her recovery. As managing agents, we are meeting regularly with the Plaza owners and discussing all aspects of ensuring the safety of the staff & shoppers at the Plaza and ongoing improvements to the complex. On a more positive note, the past 12 months have seen many improvements: the wheelchair safety ramp has been well utilised with many favourable comments, the security cameras have provided valuable footage and resulted in the control of some vandalism & grafitti ‘artists’, the roof tiles have been replaced with colorbond sheeting, the cocos palms have been removed and replaced, the broken tiles on the walkways have been replaced, the toilets refurbished and the entire complex has been repainted… and the music returns!!… with local Paradise FM gently piped throughout the Plaza giving a gentle relaxed atmosphere. Our sponsorship of the Plaza Alstonville Show week was a huge success…. With events & activities in and round the Plaza well supported….. It was great to see the return of Miss Alstonville Show girl and congratulations to all entrants and the winner Renee Jackson. Just a reminder that as Managing agents we are always happy to hear your comments, good and bad so please do not hesitate to call in and have your say! May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy & safe Christmas and holiday period. We are open all through the holiday season (except Sundays & public holidays).
