Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, produces American and world masterpieces, and new plays and musicals. We are recognized in the national theater community for our new-play commissioning program, launched in 2010 to create a pipeline for developing work that contributes to the vitality and future of the American theater. Each season, the theater hosts numerous artist residencies, workshops, and readings, and presents an annual Cabaret of New Songs for the Musical Theater in association with NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program. The Crossing Borders Festival and Nosotros program foster a closer relationship between the theater and Latino artists and audiences, and Two River cultivates a new generation of theatergoers through innovative arts education programs that introduce young people to the theater and create opportunities for them to engage with renowned theater artists. Two River Theater was founded by Joan and Robert Rechnitz in 1994. For more information, visit tworivertheater.org or call 732.345.1400. Â

A NOTE FROM THE

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Photo by Danny Sanchez.

JOHN DIAS

P

laywright Tony Meneses often says that the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca has been his inspiration and has had a huge influence on his work. That influence is most clearly seen in Tony’s latest play, The Women of Padilla.

Born in 1898, Lorca began his artistic life as a poet and, as a young man of twenty-one, befriended and then held his own in the company of two of Spain’s great 20th century artists: the painter and provocateur Salvador Dalí and the avant-garde filmmaker Luis Buñuel. His poetry brought him fame and recognition but not the intimate engagement with his fellow humankind that he so craved. He took a job with a traveling theater company and that all changed. He said, “Outside Madrid, the theater is almost dead and the people suffer accordingly, as they would if they’d lost their two eyes, or ears, or a sense of taste. We are going to give it back to them.” Having discovered theater, he wrote less poetry, declaring: “Theater is poetry that rises from the book and becomes human enough to talk and shout, weep and despair.” Lorca is probably best known throughout the world for his “rural trilogy” of plays: Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba. But in all his plays, Lorca uses the immediacy and poetry of a heightened theatrical experience to shine a light on the inner workings of the heart and soul of his people. His plays challenged the accepted rigidity of class and gender roles. He gave voice to the “everyday people”—the rural poor and urban working classes, the gypsies and other outsiders, and especially the women whom tradition held ought remain silent. For General Francisco Franco and his fascist government, who were hell-bent on protecting their notion of traditional Spain and Catholic purity, there was no room for poetry or dissent. On August 18, 1936, Franco’s militia captured Lorca at his home in Granada and the next day shot him on the side of a road just outside the city.

I

t always strikes me as ironic (among other things) how much a repressive government feels the need to suppress its artists. The pretense usually goes: art is a luxury and in times of trouble a nation must focus on defending its security and traditional way of life. A strong military is necessary, for sure—there are crazy and evil people out there. But art is a defense too, against, as Lorca says “the loss of eyes, ears and taste.” What’s ironic is that those governments who seem to say that art isn’t necessary are only ever proving its power. Like our current government in Washington who seek to undermine and limit the press and do the same to programs that support the arts and humanities, it’s clear some politicians are as well aware as we are of the impact of the writer’s pen, the actor’s voice and the artist’s inspiration. García Lorca’s poems, plays and life inspire us all to celebrate and defend the hearts and souls of our fellow mankind. And as Tony proclaims in his Women of Padilla, a nation that will send its young men and women to fight its battles in foreign wars needs it poets back home to make some sense of the horror and see hope for humanity.

IN MEMORIAM

Hugh Hardy, July 26, 1932 – March 17, 2017 Legendary architect Hugh Hardy—whose firm, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, designed Two River Theater and numerous other landmark performance spaces—died on March 16 in Manhattan of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 84. Hardy began his career as an assistant to famed theatrical set and lighting designer Jo Mielziner and theater remained his “great love,” Architectural Record wrote in its obituary. “If Hardy had never designed anything but theaters—his specialty during a 50-year career—he would still be known as an architect of extraordinary range. “ Among the buildings he designed, restored, or renovated are Brooklyn’s Polonsky Theatre Center, built for Theatre for a New Audience; Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater; the New Amsterdam and New Victory Theatres; Radio City Music Hall; and the Joyce Theater, a venue for dance performances. Two River Theater was honored to have been among his clients. In 2004, when our two-theater arts complex opened, David Barbour wrote in Lighting and Sound America that “the finished theater is a modestly scaled, but beautifully equipped, venue placed inside a building that fits neatly into the Red Bank landscape—even as it positions the theater company as a player in the town’s social life.”

Neil V. DeSena, November 6, 1964 – February 11, 2017 Two River Theater mourns the passing of Neil V. DeSena, husband of Trustee Carolyn C. DeSena. Neil was Managing Partner of SenaHill Partners, the merchant bank he cofounded in 2013, after an impressive career on Wall Street that spanned three decades. A visionary thinker, he helped transform how people transact business in the 21st century. He was also a gardener, and in that spirit planted seeds that helped both people and their work blossom and bloom. The Two River family extends its condolences to his family, including Carolyn and their three children, his friends; and his colleagues.

LEADERSHIP BIOS JOHN DIAS (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) assumed his position as Artistic Director of Two River Theater in August 2010 after working as a producer and dramaturg in New York for 20 years. In partnership with Managing Director Michael Hurst he has brought new vitality to the 20-year-old Red Bank theater, including producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; launching the theater’s first literary department and commissioning program for new plays; presenting annual events such as a musical theater cabaret in collaboration with New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and the Crossing Borders festival of Latino plays; and developing numerous arts-education initiatives for young people including A Little Shakespeare, an annual production of one of Shakespeare’s plays performed by high-school students. Throughout his career, John has been a leading advocate for bold new American plays and stimulating productions of the classics, including the Broadway productions of Lisa Kron’s Well and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. For 12 seasons, he worked in a variety of capacities at The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, including Associate Producer and Associate Artistic Director. During much of his tenure at The Public, working for Producer George C. Wolfe, he was responsible for all aspects of play production on the theater’s six stages and the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. He also ran the theater’s literary department, overseeing new-play workshops and productions of classics by Shakespeare and other writers, and he directed and taught in the Shakespeare Lab, a professional actor-training program. Previously, John was dramaturg at Hartford Stage Company, and co-founded and led Affinity Company Theater, a production company dedicated to bringing daring new works from around the world to New York, and The Playwrights Realm, an off-Broadway company that produces new plays by emerging artists. He has been a Tony Award nominator, a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous other organizations, and he has taught at New York University and Yale University. John currently teaches in the graduate school at Columbia University. He received his BA from George Washington University and his MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

MICHAEL HURST (MANAGING DIRECTOR) joined Two River Theater as Managing Director in 2011, bringing 20 years of theater and non-profit experience, including 16 years at The Public Theater. Under his joint leadership with Artistic Director John Dias, Two River has experienced ambitious growth and enjoyed new recognition in the national theater community. During his tenure, Two River has embarked on a new Strategic Plan; began producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; and launched the theater’s first commissioning program for original plays, as well as numerous new community and education programs. Prior to coming to Two River, Michael was on the staff of The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival for 16 years, including four years as General Manager and six as Managing Director, overseeing budgets that ranged from $16 to $20 million. Michael was responsible for all financial aspects of the productions at The Public Theater and Central Park’s Delacorte Theater. During his tenure at The Public, he oversaw the Broadway transfers of many productions, including Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Elaine Stritch at Liberty; Take Me Out, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play; and Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, or Change. Michael was also part of all strategic planning for the theater, including its artistic leadership transition and the opening of Joe’s Pub, now considered one of the country’s best small venues for music and performance. Most recently, Michael was Chief Operating Officer of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which presents the prestigious New York Film Festival. At the Film Society, he oversaw the building of a new three-theater, $40-million facility that opened in June 2011, and he managed the organizational growth necessary to support the facility. His work in the commercial theater includes serving as Executive Producer for San Francisco-based producer Carole Shorenstein Hayes, starting her New York office and creating a strategic plan to develop new theatrical work. Michael served as Vice President for The Off-Broadway League and was a member of The Broadway League for 14 years. He is a graduate of Rutgers University and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Theatre Alliance and the Advisory Board of the Indie Street Film Festival.

ROBERT M. RECHNITZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) founded Two River Theater Company in 1994. An educator, writer, and director, he is one of New Jersey’s most esteemed theater leaders. He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado and was a professor of American Literature at Monmouth University for 35 years, contributing scholarly articles and short stories to various academic journals. As Two River’s Executive Producer, he oversaw the theater’s move from Monmouth University in West Long Branch to the Algonquin Arts in Manasquan. While the company was in residence in Manasquan, he planned for and oversaw the building of a state-of-the-art, two theater complex in Red Bank as Two River’s permanent home. He directed the opening production in the new building, the classic American comedy You Can’t Take It With You, in 2005. Among the other notable productions he has directed at Two River are Curse of the Starving Class (for which he received The Star Ledger’s nomination for Best Director of a Comedy), True West, A View from the Bridge, The Glass Menagerie, Thieves’ Carnival, Uncle Vanya, American Buffalo, and Barefoot in the Park. He has been honored with Monmouth University’s 2001 Maurice Pollak Award for Distinguished Community Service, and the 2007 Celebration of Excellence Award from the Monmouth County Arts Council. At the start of the new century, the Star-Ledger named him one of the “20 New Jerseyans to Watch.” He is the author, with Kenneth Stunkel, of Lives of Reason, which had its world premiere at Two River in 2016.

ASKING PEOPLE T O CA R E : TONY MENESES AND T WO RIVER’S PL AYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE MADELEINE GEORGE TALK ABOUT WRITING FOR THE THEATER AND THE WOMEN OF PADILLA

MA DE LE IN E :

Why does a promising young person like yourself want to write plays? Why would you do something like that with your life? [Laughter]

22

TO N Y: Great question. Every playwright I know, including myself, is starting to dip their toes into writing for television. So I’m working on something there, sure. But there’s something about writing for the theater where I feel, “I know this. This is my skin.” It’s nice to feel good about the work, and the words, and the actors in the room and how they’re doing their work and how Ken’s doing his work. It feels like it is sort of selfless, that you as the writer just go, “remove me from this,” and they get to do their thing. And how lovely is that? How great that they have this platform to do their craft, and their work, and their art that they bring to it. It feels like this is the point of what we all talk about when we talk about collaboration.

And the other thing that keeps me coming back to the theater is the audience. Whatever kind of play you are doing—whether its experimental theater or traditional realism—we are asking the audience to care and to feel. And right now, we’re putting on a play with eight Latina women on stage in a moment where being Latino, Mexican, is in contention. MA DELEIN E : I love that idea. I love the thought of asking people to care. That just by being there, actors— and all the people that brought the actors there—are asking the audience to care. That’s nice. TONY: It’s very sentimental, and I know that. I think my work has a level of sentiment to it that I’m always watching out for, in that it’s more interesting when we’re trying to get there than just being there the whole time. MA DELEIN E : One of my favorite quotes is by the writer William Kittredge: “If you’re not risking sentimentality, you’re not close to your inner self.” But this play doesn’t feel that way to me. It’s lyrical and it’s imagistic, and those are sophisticated modes of delivery of feeling. TONY: You want to avoid the trappings of poetry. You know? It’s been fun seeing how the actors have keyed into avoiding the trap of playing it poetically. The most exciting kind of work that I’ve seen is when they just spoke the words. Had the conversation. Talked. MA DELEIN E : How is it different working in the Rechnitz Theater? It’s a much bigger space than the Marion Huber Theater, where your play Guadalupe in the Guest Room premiered. Does it change the tempo of the play? Is it different dramaturgy working in a big space verses working in a small space? TONY: It certainly feels traditional with that proscenium. It harkens back to, “this is how theater began.” Especially with a story that I am pulling from roots of Greek tragedy in some way. MA DELEIN E : Can you say more about that? TONY: It’s an inspiration point. We’re not actively trying to recreate a Greek tragic story, but it’s very Trojan Women-esque. [Note: The Trojan Women, a tragedy by Euripides that is considered the first anti-war play in the Western canon, follows the fates of the women of Troy after their city has been destroyed and their husbands killed.] I’ve used that as a sort of inspiration point and done my own thing with it. But in that way it does feel like this belongs in a proscenium theater like the Rechnitz.

M A DE LE IN E : Did you set out to write an old-fashioned play? TO N Y: In some ways, yes. I wanted to use a narrative structure that feels familiar, and add a Lorcaesque aspect—which is the lyrical nature of the play—and then give those things a spin and a contemporary feel that would speak to the active moment of what now feels like. M A DE LE IN E : Say more about that. TO N Y: When I wrote the play we were very much in the moment of the Iraq War. I was observing a lot of what my peers were doing in grad school, and I was reading what was coming from New York, a lot of soldiers’ stories. And I thought, “Alright, if I’m going to tell the story of this ethos, how am I going to make it my own? What can I pull from?” And at that point, I was going back to where I’m from, Guadalajara, a lot, and I was hanging out a lot with my cool-ass aunts. So I thought “Let me just combine these things.” And so I thought, “Alright. A woman on the homefront story.” M A DE LE IN E : My last question for you, is there one of these eight women who you feel the closest to in some way? TO N Y: Well, also in the etymology of this play, these are my aunts. They’re named after all of them. Literally, these are my aunts. M A DE LE IN E : Wait literally? Wait, so one of them [Carmen] is the heavy drinker? TO N Y: Yeah. M A DE LE IN E : No way! TO N Y: I had to tell her, and she’s like “Wait, I’m a drunk?” And I was like, “No you’re the life of the party whether you’re drunk or not.” When my mom tries to recount their past she’s like, “our youth was very innocuous” and my Aunt Carmen is like, “we were drunk all the time! What are you talking about? Don’t lie to your son.” So she is sort of the more blunt of the women. I love her. She’s great. But Mari is the one who’s my mom in real life. She’s the one who’s had to be this sort of unspoken leader in that world. In Mexican culture you don’t announce when you’re coming over; you just knock on the door. And they always come to her whenever I’m at her house. All day long. She’s the matriarch.

NOSOTROS:

ENGAGING LATINO ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES

I

n addition to producing plays by Latino writers, Two River engages Latino artists and audiences through an ongoing initiative called Nosotros, which launched with our 2014 production of Tony Menses’ play Guadalupe in the Guest Room. Originally built around a series of storytelling workshops created and led by playwright Tanya Saracho and director Jerry Ruiz, Nosotros has evolved and expanded to include Spanish-language programming and family events at the theater throughout each of our seasons.

2016 Crossing Borders Festival. Photo by Teja Anderson.

In connection with The Women of Padilla, we curated three special events for both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking audiences. n On SATURDAY, MARCH 25 we hosted Family Day at the Theater: A Salute to our Troops. Event activities included writing letters to our troops, arts and crafts, face painting, theater games, and more! Complimentary lunch was provided by Urban Coalhouse. Crossing Borders Festival. Photo by Teja Anderson.

n On WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29, we presented “Beauty in Two Language: An Evening of Spanish-Language Poetry in English Translation.” Poems by noted Spanish writers including Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda were read by artistic staff members and members of the Two River community. n On MONDAY, APRIL 17, we are pleased to bring audiences a special Spanish-language reading of The Women of Padilla (Las Mujeres de Padilla), free and open to the public. Directed by Leyma López (who directed in our 2015 Crossing Borders festival of plays by Cuban and Cuban-American playwrights), the reading will feature cast members from our production of The Women of Padilla and special guest actors from New York. Reserve your free ticket today at 732.345.1400 or tworivertheater.org.

Mark your calendars now to join us August 2-6 for our 2017 Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) festival of new Latino plays. Since Crossing Borders launched in 2011, the annual five-day festival has featured free readings of more than two dozen plays. Today, it attracts more than 700 people annually and includes English-language readings of four plays (one of which is also read in Spanish), conversations with artists following every reading, a keynote address from a leader within the Latino arts community, and a free outdoor neighborhood party with live music. A company of actors, writers, directors, and other artists are invited to be in residence throughout the festival. Crossing Borders is curated by Stephanie Ybarra, who serves as the Director of Special Artistic Projects at The Public Theater in New York, where she leads the Mobile Unit and Public Forum programs. 25

T

his June, Two River concludes our 2016/17 Season with a new production of an ambitious, artful musical that we believe will become a major addition to the canon of great American theater.

AT RA MU ILB SICLAZ AL ING

!

Based on a film of the same name and set in the late 19th century, The Ballad of Little Jo is inspired by the remarkable real-life story of a woman named Josephine Monaghan. Originally from Boston, Josephine lived in a tough Idaho mining town for nearly 20 years, disguised as a man called “Jo.” Brought to life with a melodic, moving, and hauntingly beautiful score, The Ballad of Little Jo features folk-ballad infused songs by Grammy Award-winning Nashville songwriter Mike Reid (whose many hits include “I Can’t Make You Love Me”) and lyricist Sarah Schlesinger. Mike and Sarah’s previous collaborations include Two River’s much-loved productions of In This House and A Wind in the Willows Christmas. Artistic Director John Dias is co-writing the book and making his Two River directorial debut with this production. Little Jo had its world premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2000, in a production that prompted John Lahr to call it “the best piece of musical storytelling I have seen in a decade” in The New Yorker. This gorgeous musical is epic in its sweep, intimate in its relationships, and sure to touch the heart. The Ballad of Little Jo will feature Jane Bruce (Elf, Missed Connections: A Craigslist Musical) as Sarah, Daniel K. Isaac (According to My Mother, Billons) as Tin Man Wong, Eric William Morris (Be More Chill, Mamma Mia!) as Jordon, and Teal Wicks (Finding Neverland, Wicked) as Jo. The company also includes Cole Burden, Brian Flores, Leenya Rideout, Christopher Russo, Perry Sherman, Kristin Stokes, Ian Michael Stuart, and Barbara Tirrell.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

SUMMER THEATER CAMP

Photos by Scott L. Friedman.

“Summer Theater Camp is my favorite time of year,” Kate Cordaro, Two River’s Director of Education, says exuberantly. “Every inch of this building is filled with kids working together, learning new skills, creating something out of nothing, building a community of theater makers and lovers. I can’t wait for us to get started again!”

year. The camp is designed to be fun, challenging, and inspire creativity and a sense of adventure. All of our programs are led by professional, experienced teaching artists.

eared toward students ages 8-18, our Summer Theater Camp focuses on developing the artist inside every child. By creating a supportive ensemble, we teach children theater skills, but they will gain far more than just knowledge of the arts. They will learn courage, kindness, confidence, and how to take creative risks. We don’t mount a fully-staged production at the end of each week – that approach focuses solely on product rather than skill building. Instead, we structure our camp around three words: SPARK, CREATE, SHARE.

“We are proud to offer Spectrum Theater Classes for the first time,” Kate says. “Theater helps students on the autism spectrum with social interaction and self-confidence, and play! Everyone should have a space to express themselves creatively, and we look forward to sharing our theater with a new audience.”

G

New this year, Two River is also launching the theater’s first Spectrum Theater Classes for students with autism ages 10-17.

For more information and registration forms, visit tworivertheater.org/education/summer_classes.php

SPARK is the inspiration – the theme, the jumping off point for what a class will work on during the week. CREATE is where students learn tangible skills – such as making set designs in Theater Arts and Design, or learning improvisation skills as they work together to devise a scene in Acting. SHARE is the Invited Class each Friday where we invite friends and loved ones into the theater so our young artists can share the fruits of their labors.

W

hether a student is an aspiring actor, someone who has enjoyed working behind-the-scenes on a school play, or one who simply loves theater—Two River's theater camp is the perfect way for them to enjoy a creative summer, year after 31

RED BANK WEDDING WALK

On Sunday, March 26, Two River Theater was one of 35 organizations that participated in the Red Bank Wedding Walk. Wedding Walk is a free, one-day event that introduces brides, grooms, partners, and their families to Red Bank as the one-stop shopping destination for weddings. Two River welcomed over 100 guests into the theater to promote available rental spaces for bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and more. Wedding decorations were provided by Two River Theater’s very own Katie Benson through her company Table Setting is My Life. Food was provided by The Danish Café.

2017/18 SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT On Sunday, March 26, Two River Theater’s board, staff and special guests attended the 2017/18 Season Announcement in the Rechnitz Theater. Alongside Artistic Director John Dias, artists Crystal A. Dickinson, Brandon J. Dirden, Michael Cumpsty, and Matt Barbot revealed Two River’s 10 production season! Following the announcement, refreshments were provided in the lobby.
