Brant County told to accept land transfer or else

By Jim Windle BRANT – The Municipality of the County of Brant and Brantford’s city hall have been locked in a long political dance over the transfer of Haldimand Tract land that Six Nations believes was never sold or given to the city or the county.

The problem between Mayors Friel and Eddy seems to lie in that fact that the rural County places a premium on the value of good farm land while the City seeks to grow by developing on 5000 acres of this same farmland.

But there is a third stakeholder on that land, one whom the city seems to be totally ignoring in the process. The land being discussed is part of the 7,000 acre Johnson Settlement Tract, which was set aside two hundred years ago as a place for families of mixed marriage between settlers and Haudenosaunee to live and was only to be leased, and never sold.

Brantford’s desire to absorb the acreage into the city has een floated for quite some time, although only recently has it become a bone of contention between the two municipalities.

On February 5th, Friel sent a terse letter to Mayor Eddie, which could be interpreted as a not so veiled threat, stating that unless Brant accept Brantford’s offer to transfer the land from the County to the city, he would force the issue through the Provincial government.

Friel’s letter gives until the end of February for the rant ouncil to officially make up its mind on the city’s transfer proposal, or else.

“Should the County fail to render its decision by that date,” Friel’s letter states. “I fully intend to take steps to advance my Council’s Resolution of Dec. 2, 2013, which, as you know, authorizes me, in co-ordination with the City representatives on the Task Force, any and all action with the Province of Ontario, necessary to complete the boundary change between the

City of Brantford and the County of Brant.”

Brant County Council responded Monday night to the letter, described by various members of that council as inflammatory and insulting” for its accusation that Brant Council was blocking the transfer.

“There are things in this letter that are inflammatory and didn t appreciate the letter when I read it,” said Councillor Joan Gatward.

“There is a nasty streak in the letter that should be responded to.”

For her part, Six Nations Elected Chief Ava Hill, wonders if the province in fact would get involved in the mater, as Mayor Friel seems to believe.

“That’s between them,” she says. “The bottom line is, we still need to be consulted no matter

which way it goes.”

The land in question is under a federally registered and recognized land claim, one of 28 still before the courts, most of which include lands assumed by Brantford as being under it’s jurisdiction.

The ounty flatly denies Friel's accusations that the County has never responded to the city’s plan for the land transfer, and they can prove that is in fact not true, pointing to at least two separate communications stating they wished to continue negotiations.

Councillor County Robert Chambers was particularly offended by Friel’s letter and spoke out his frustration.

“My favorite line in the Friel letter is, that we terminated our membership on the (negotiation) committee, which is not quite correct,” said Chambers. “Friel says, ‘that move in my opinion

makes the resumption in negotiations difficult at best, and renders the commitment county’s hollow at worst.’

“If there is any statement he makes here that is categorically incorrect, and totally inflammatory, in my opinion, it is to characterize county’s commitment to boundary adjustment as hollow,” he bristled. “That is, quite frankly, insulting to Mayor Eddy and the members of this council and I don’t think it should be taken lightly.”

Chambers’ defense of his council’s integrity didn’t stop there.

“He (Friel) goes on to say, that although he adds the word respectfully, it is actually disrespectful when he tells us what we have to do, when we have to do it, and if we don’t do it this is what he is going to do. And what he is going to do is take any and all actions necessary,” he

continued. submission “My would be that any and all actions that Mayor Friel and everyone should approve is to sit down cooperatively and inclusively with all stake holders, including Six Nations, to arrive at a mutually satisfactory boundary adjustment.”

It is Chambers’ opinion that Mayor Friel “wants to have no agreement, he wants to say we can’t agree, and he wants the province to believe we can’t. He is very disagreeable, and this letter is an indication of that.”

Eddy and County CAO Paul Emerson, met with Friel and his CAO last Friday, and according to Eddy and Emerson, the City made it clear that they would not negotiate on the matter.

An official letter of response is being drafted to address Friel’s accusations and threats.

Family of Cheyenne Fox seek justice Harper announces changes to FNEA

By Jen MtPleasant In 2013, three young First Nations women met sudden and tragic deaths in Toronto within a threemonth period. Even more startling is the fact that the police quickly dismissed all deaths as either suicides or ruled out foul play without doing a thorough investigation.

In May 2013, Terra Gardner, 26, from Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation, was struck and killed by a freight train in Toronto. Police ruled out foul play despite the fact that Gardner was summoned to testify in a murder trial and she had told people close to her that she had been receiving death threats in relation to this.

In April 2013, Cheyenne Fox, 20, a member of the Sheguiandah First Nation died after falling from a 24-storey condo in Toronto. Within hours, Toronto Police told Fox’s

family she committed suicide.

And in July of 2013, Bella Laboucan-McLean, 25, from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation died after falling 31-storey’s from another condo in Toronto.

Initially, police once again tried to rule Laboucan’s death a suicide, but after much pressure from the large First Nations community in Toronto, police are now treating her death as suspicious.

Three beautiful young women, all met sudden tragic deaths and police are doing very little to find answers.

But Cheyenne’s father, John Fox, won’t rest until justice is served.

Fox, along with friends and family of Cheyenne, strongly believe her death was not a suicide.

Cheyenne left behind a two year old son, Xavier, whom she loved very much. Fox is now calling for an inquest into his daughter’s death.

Members of Cheyenne Fox’s family are demanding that Toronto police treat her death as a homicide.

Last November, Fox’s lawyer along with supporters met with Toronto Police to discuss the death of Cheyenne. Ac-

cording to Fox, the police admitted that they might be part of a ‘systemic failure’: that is failure of the criminal justice system to treat First Nations people with diligence and respect, especially when they are victims of crime or victims of disappearances and murders.

Fox also attended Toronto Police headquarters and met with Staff Inspector, Tony Riviere and four detectives to discuss their investigation into Cheyenne’s death. Riviere told Fox, “What’s going on with Aboriginal folks, is not just in the city of Toronto. It’s part of a larger problem.”

Riviere may have been referring to the disproportionate number of First Nations women who, in the past 30 years, have either met sudden and violent deaths or have gone missing without a trace and a general unwillingness of police to help find answers. According to a report released by the Native Women’s Association, at least 582 Indigenous women and girls have been murdered and gone missing in the past three decades.

First Nations leaders and educators across Canada were taken by surprise last week after the Prime Minister of Canada and AFN Chief Shawn Atleo announced the proposed First Nations Education Act (FNEA) would be renamed the First Nation Control of First Nation Education Act (FNCFNEA). analso Harper nounced $1.25 billion per year in funding for First Nations schools across Canada, which would increase by 4.5 per cent each year after 2016. Total funding proposed for reforms amount to $1.9 billion over several years beginning in 2016/17.

The proposed capital funding investment of $500 million over seven years would not even meet the needs of First Nations in Ontario let alone all of the First Nations within Canada. An analysis in 2012 revealed

that it would take $242 to $354 million to bring schools in First Nation communities up to provincial standards.

In a statement, Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy said he is “approaching the Harper government’s proposal updatfor a renamed and updat ed First Nation education bill cautiously.”

“In announcing ‘a new approach,’ the Harper government continues to cut and exert restrictive guidelines on all funding including education funding for our representative organizations. For too long our children have been underfunded and denied opportunity and fairness,” Regional Chief Beardy said.

Friday’s “Although announcement states that Canada and First Nations agree to work together on the passage of the new ‘First Nation Control of First Nation Education Act’ (FNCFNEA) and

jointly develop the associated regulations, it is unclear how this agreement came about and how the joint work will be accomplished,” Ontario Regional Chief Beardy said.

Chiefs of Ontario weren’t the only assembly to be caught off guard by Harper’s announcement.

After two days of meet meeting at Kahnawake last week, the Iroquois Caucus signed a Declaration unanimously rejecting the FNEA. Leaders from AkKahnawa:ke, wesasne, Oneida of the Thames, Six Nations of the Grand River, Tyendinaga and Wahta resolved to “reject the First Nations Education Act in its entirety, including all of its components and contents, and any and all federally or provincially imposed legislation in this matter.”

“Police Chiefs and their associations, the Premiers of all the Provinces, the Assembly of First Nations and the families of 3,000 murdered and missing aboriginal women have made one united call – A National Inquiry Now,” Brant wrote on his website.

The OPP wasn’t happy with the support Brant garnered when he ran for Chief in November, and neither was the government.

“They can’t say ‘it’s Shawn and a handful of anymore,” supporters’ said Brant in an interview with APTN National News after his failed attempt become Chief.

Brant garnered more than 350 votes in the Tyendinaga Territory on his platform promising serious direct action if Harper’s government continues to ignore the issue.

Brant’s letter to Harper includes the following: "In a report, published in September 2013 by MaryAnne Pearce and recent recently obtained by the RCMP,

some 824 First Nations women have now been identified as ha ing een murdered or gone missing, with a majority of those cases documented as having occurred in the past 15 years.

"Your unwillingness to consider this first step at reconciliation is well documented and understood.

"It is our opinion that all diplomatic means to convince you of the need for an inquiry have failed.

Further, the tears and sadness of the families left behind have not moved you to any position of compassion.

"We have therefore resolved that we will take whatever and further actions that are deemed necessary, to compel you to call a National Inquiry into the crisis of Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women and Girls."

In an APTN interview, Brant warned of widespread and serious direct action in the form of transportation blockades between Toronto and Montreal should Harper continue to ignore the sit situation.

Brant gives Harper ultimatum

By Jim Windle TYENDINAGA - Tyendinaga Mohawk activist Shawn Brant has given Prime Minister Steven Harper until the end of February to call a national inquiry into missing Indigenous women.

If not, he promises direct action on a large scale, claiming to have garnered support from a wide number of organizations and individuals.

It has been a growing pro lem that first made mainstream news 20 years ago with a Globe and Mail report, but rather than decreasing, the numbers of murdered and missing Native women have been increasing at alarming rates to what is now believed to be between 600 and 800 cases, the vast majority, not solved or even properly investigated.

According to Brant, to put these numbers in context, in the non-Native population it would be equivalent to somewhere 50,000 murdered and missing women. If that were the case, Brant wonders how Harper’s government and Canada’s police

Outrage builds in Akwesasne Two Row understanding over PCB contamination reality through education AKWESASNE - The recent reporting of documented higher levels of cancer-causing pollution at the nearby former General Motors plant has some Akwesasne residents shaking their heads. These community members say that they have been telling the public that the news is as bad as it could be imagined in any nightmare. Learning that the amount of contamination is up to 250% higher than was originally reported has only underscored that realization for these environmental activists.

The industrial area is part of a federally recognized Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Cleanup site, one of three in the immediate area of Akwesasne.

In January, the EPA presented an update on the site cleanup. Anne Kelly, of the EPA Emergency and Remedial Project Response Division, report reported that the site work was over budget due to the amount of contamination that has been excavated to date. The contaminants at the site are polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBS).

“It’s really pure PCB product,” Kelly said. The federal regulations for a cleanup project begin at 10 parts per million.

The concentrations being found in untreated sludge forty feet below the surface measure out at 500,000 parts per million in this current status update. This has caused the weight of excavated soil to increase per cubic yard. 121,000 tons were expected to be removed prior to the project. However, 335,000 tons have already been excavated with many more tons remaining.

The contaminated soil is considered a toxic waste by the EPA. The news has been quietly received around most of Akwesasne. In contrast, the comments of longtime environmental activists stand out.

“For 32 years we’ve been waiting for them to clean

it up,” stated Kakwerais, who is also known as Dana Leigh Thompson.

“Remove the pile, remove the Superfund site, take all of their poison out of here and put it into a secure site,” she said. “They call it a cleanup but it’s really a cover-up,“ Kakwerais noted.

The outspoken land rights defender has taken to the media many times on this subject. “It’s called environmental genocide.

We can’t wait longer because our people are dying. Our children are being born without their minds. All this poison goes to our land,” Kakwerais said.

Science also seems to back up the activist claims. One compelling source is noted PCB contaminant researcher David O. Carpenter, M.D. who is a neurotoxicologist and professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Toxicology in the School of Public Health at State University of New York.

Carpenter has studied PCB pollution around Akwesasne for many years. He notes that in 2013, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reached a consensus for classifying PCBs as carcinogenic to humans. This is the highest ranking for carcinogens that the IARC uses.

Additionally, he explained the World Health Organization (WHO) now considers oral and respiratory exposure to PCBs to be major exposure routes to both human beings and wildlife living near contamination sites. All of this means that Akwesasne residents are forced to live near very dangerous waste substances.

The SUNY researcher maintains landfills like this one are an inherent health threat. “PCBs volatize and escape into the air. The landfill should e moved totally away from

the reservation,” Carpenter says.

Recent studies done on the recorded levels of testosterone in Akwesasne men and adolescent males both indicate that the presence of PCBs in Native foods has led to a decrease in testosterone levels in both population segments.

James Ransom, a former member of the St. Regis Tribal Council said the issue involved in the cleanup is money. “The real crime that’s been committed here is by General Motors. The United States basically let them shed their toxic assets.

Communities like Akwesasne pay the price for that decision,” Chief Ransom explained.

EPA representative Kelly stated in her update that $121 million had been allocated for the local cleanup, which was intended to cover 100 years of operations, maintenance and monitoring.

The projection of costs was related to a 2007 General Motors bankruptcy settlement, which saw most of the overall cleanup allocations going to this project, from a possible 89 U.S. sites.

Kelly said that the whole $121 million remains available for immediate needs. “You really don’t know what’s down there until you start digging,” Kelly commented.

Kakwerais the activist thinks she has seen enough of the federal agenda to come to a conclusion on the subject of pollution in Akwesasne.

She wishes that federal prosecutors would go after the corporations guilty of these environmental crimes. Instead these offices are intent on prosecuting the victims left living on this contaminated land instead of helping them. “It’s the legacy of colonialism’s divide and conquer tactics,” she concludes.

The group is represented by Christophe Ulysse, Pastor of Brant Brantford’s New City Church on 190 Lynden Road. Every Friday, Garlow spends a few hours with a group of non-Native young people who have dedicated themselves to trying to understand Six Nations and its

people better.

“As believers we have a hunger to learn the truth.

It’s our desire for truth and justice that makes us look into this suppressed history,” says Pastor Ulysse.

“Everyone in Brantford and everyone who has a Canadian passport should take this course.”

He reports that the students involved are excited and have been sharing the information they have been learning with their friends and families.

“Native issues are becoming the paramount issue facing Canada and the church,” says Ulysse.

Out of the experience, Garlow hopes to pull together an actual six week curriculum which can be made available to similar non-Native groups to learn some of the basic history culture and present day realities facing Onkwehon:we youth today.

“There seems to be a fascination about Six Nations history,” says Garlow. “They really want to understand. It just feels right after each session.

They are really interested and are respectful. It’s like they feel in a safe place to ask these questions and to learn.”

Province asked to restore tax exemption

BRANTFORD – Brantford City Councillor Jan Vanderstelt tabled a motion in council Monday night which would see the City of Brantford recommend to the province that a piece of legislation which was rescinded by the province, be reinstated to recognize lands held in trust by Indians be municipally tax exempt.

It was a slim margin, but the motion was passed with Mayor Chris Friel’s tiebreaking vote.

This legislation is especially important to both Brantford and Six Nations. The wording on an agreement made in 1997 between Brantford and Six Nations, stipulated that land held in trust for the people of

Six Nations would not be taxable at the municipal level. But since then, the Province has arbitrarily rescinded the law this article was based on.

It all comes into play with a property on West Street in Brantford, bequeathed to the Elected Band Council, and another property on Gilkinson Street, which was bequeathed to the Mohawk Nation several years ago.

A recent tax sale the city tried to impose on the West Street property for tax arrears was thwarted when Six Nations Elected Council paid the back taxes, under protest, to take the property off the chopping block.

The Gilkinson Street address has not been dealt with at this point, some say because it was

willed under the Haldimand Deed rather than through the Indian Act Band Council.

Vanderstelt read the motion in council, but before the vote was taken, Councillor Richard Carpenter raised an objection.

“What happens if, let’s say, Lynden Park Mall says, ‘Oh, we’re going to give this land in trust to Six Nations Band Council. You give us a receipt saying we bought it back for $30 million and we forgo paying the City of Brantford $2 million in taxation a year,” he speculated. “The rest of the tax payers would have to make that up and so their taxes will go up. These are the kind of things that could happen. I’m not saying it will happen, but it could.

Brantford City Councillor Jan Vanderstelt successfully presented a motion at Council Monday that would see a piece of legislation, which guaranteed off-reserve land held in trust for Six Nations, be reinstated. The legislation was arbitrarily rescinded sometime after 1997, when an agreement was made between the city and Six Nations that allowed the crossing of the Grand River by a sewer line. The issue has come up again regarding two properties within the city, which are held in trust for Six Nations.

“So if every Native person from Six Nations living in Brantford that owns a house decided to put the property in trust with Six Nations, they no longer have to pay tax to the municipality. Somebody else has got to pay those taxes when that happens.”

Joining Carpenter in voting against the motion

were Councillors Dan McCreary, Dave Wrobel, Marguerite Ceschi-Smith, and David Neumann.

Joining Councillor anderstelt to the affirmative were Councillors John Utley, Debi Dignan-Rumble, Vince Bucci, and Larry Kings.

That tied the vote, which meant that Mayor Friel would cast the

deciding vote, which he did in support of Vanderstelt’s motion.

A formal request from the City to the Province to have the original legislation restored in Brantford, will now be drafted and filed through Liberal MPP, Dave Levac.

The request will then be considered by the province.

Rights worth respecting No matter how you personally feel about cigarettes, it is important to recognize that for the last 30 years, the Native tobacco trade has been quietly laying the economic foundation for the resurgence of indigenous pride and self-determination. Herded onto reserves, kept from selling produce to nearby non-native markets, and formally deprived of basic legal, political and economic rights by an undeniably racist Indian Act, the tobacco trade has provided a viable way out from the nightmare of poverty and oppression for many Onkwehon:we people.

It is because of this threat of economic self-determination that the Canadian state is attempting to crush the Native tobacco trade through its imposition of the draconian Bill C-10.

Over the last several decades, the tobacco trade has strengthened the economic position of the Haudenosaunee in general and the Mohawks in particular as our people have become the producers and manufacturers of a tobac-

co product that is shipped to practically every Native community across the continent. These economic linkages and the literally billions of dollars involved in the trade, are introducing whole new possibilities for a resurgent and independent Native economy within this continent.

Whether in South Africa, Palestine, or Turtle Island, it has always been in the interest of every government striving to keep others under the yoke of colonialism to deny them independent economic opportunities.

It can be no other way, for economic independence – control over the means of production on one’s own territory – is what creates the preconditions of political independence.

What scares the Canadian government is that there is now a layer of Haudenosaunee millionaires who happen to be firm elie ers in the reality of their own nationhood. With their own language, culture, common world view, and shared territory, Onkwehon:we people belong to nations that deserve the same

rights as all others on the international stage. And now they are getting the economic clout to make it so.

Because of independent income through tobacco, and the thousands of jobs being provided in manufacturing, transport, and sales, Onkwehon:we people are now far less likely to be dependent upon the Government for the money it owes Native people. The lesser the involvement of the Indian Act in the lives of Onkwehon:we people the greater our sovereignty is manifested.

This is all well and good, but what of the non-native newcomers to this land? What position should they take on this matter?

To you, our non-native reader, the question boils down to whether or not Haudenosaunee people have rights that are worth respecting. If the Haudenosaunee have the right to carry out business on our own territory on our own lands and among peoples who have traded together for millennia before the first white man washed

up on the shores of Turtle Island, then it is clear that the Canadian government has no business taxing the product of our labour.

We all know the negative aspects of tobacco consumption, but the sad fact is the Canadian government has left lit little other opportunity for advancement. Put bluntly colonialism has few other ways to create an economic surplus as quickly as by trading on the margins of the over-taxation of tobacco.

If you consider yourself a friend to Onkwehon:we people, and if you are ashamed with the long history of colonialism carried out by a Canadian government acting in your name, than the time has come to make your voice heard and to stand up against Bill C-10. Canada’s Indian Problem

Steven Harper’s non-apology was a craftily worded statement that does not embrace a commitment to abandon the criminal/genocidal acts and intent carried out in the Residential School Era. Nor does it acknowledge culpability for the exercising or enacting of those policies. This is the clear evidence of the true nature of “Canada’s Indian Problem”.

Plausible deniability

is a hallmark of methodology being used. Although Canada, through its diplomatic posturing, claims that we the Indians/Indigenous are well served by Canada’s beneficence, the opposite is true. This is and has long een anada s official administrative policy” and continues to be engineered as part of the “Canadian mystique”.

“Canadian’s believe...” is used generally to give assurance to the disempowered that

they are following the true vision of Canada.

This same assurance must surely echo in the back room discussions of both Senate and House of Commons. The policy of spoon feeding “Canadian dogma”, propaganda and deceit, is a daily activity of those claiming to have authority by way of the rule of law, from which they continue to impose their will on we the Indigenous. What is your Honour List?

By Jonathan Garlow Village Café is a great place to meet over breakfast, and after years of speaking about indigenous rights and the validity of Haudenosaunee governance I found myself sitting there at a table with Brian Beattie, an influential leader from Brantford who was personally impacted by Stephen Harper’s residential school apology and wanted to know what his organizations could do to help the native cause. I can still remember the words “How can we find resolution?”

We have spent so much time studying history, politics and law in the hopes to persuade the general Canadian population to accept our views we are completely unprepared to deal with the converts who want to know what steps should come next. Or at least I was.

If I remember correctly, I think that I went on about how we need to be properly honored on a social and international level but I was unable to articulate any achievable goals or even establish one simple objective. Although the food was great, the meeting left a bad taste in my mouth. I have been thinking about it ever since.

What do we really want?

Author and teacher Adrian Jacobs has said that "Less than 1% of the land mass in Canada has been legally and fully surrendered." The Dominion of Canada bought 4 million square kilometers from the Hudson's Bay Company on December 1st 1869, two years after the provinces were consolidated for an amount totaling £300,000 ($1.5 million) (See Ruperts Land Act). No one knows how Hudson’s Bay Company originally acquired this stunning swath of wilderness to legally resell the land. There are many more similar examples like this voiced by educated Onkwehon:we leaders that continuously and predictably fall upon deaf ears.

The problem we face is when a native person raises these facts, North American settler-guilt goes into overdrive and people either shut down by putting their head into the sand or furiously attack the native strawman who to them, is nothing but a burden on the taxpayer. It is like clockwork. Look at the online comments sections in which “good Canadians” post responses to any article about Elsipogtog, Caledonia, or native hunting and fishing rights.

We want the general consciousness of Canada to improve.

The Haudenosaunee have maintained a government, a land base and a language; all the criteria for national sovereignty but one mention of this fact and we are condemned as separatists at best, or traitors at worst. The Crown understands that we have not been subjugated, why don’t they simply tell their population and constituents? Or do we have to wait another 40 years for a Prime Minister down the line to apologize for treating us as second rate Canadian citizens instead of sovereign allies to the British Crown.

Our visitors and neighbors should take heart in the enduring resilience of the Two Row Wampum and know that our intent isn’t to shame them or force an upheaval of their society. Our wise grandfathers understood that we would peacefully share this land but they did not foresee us being portrayed as burdensome protestors or marginal groups whining on TV. The Corporations, cities and countries are fearing an eviction notice but we intend only to be recognized and treated fairly in the name of peace, friendship, and respect.

“Make it Visible” campaign that concerns the situation of indigenous people in Colombia, where more than a third of indigenous people are facing “extermination” as a result of incursions into their territories and the subsequent forced displacement. María Particia and Federico met with MPs, Senators, and representatives from the Assembly of First Nations and worked to have people understand the severity of the crisis.

The Two Row Times spoke with Cathy Price, a campaigner for Amnesty International, “The reality is that the emergency

situation for indigenous peoples [in Colombia] is invisible.” The goal of Amnesty’s campaign is to increase the visibility of the situation facing Colombia’s indigenous people and Price felt the visit by the two rights defenders had gone a long way in accomplishing that. “We are making headway in making the crisis visible, in finding new allies who are prepared to take this situation forward.”

Presenters at the event spoke about the economic interests of transnational corporations that are driving the displacement of indigenous people. “In Colombia

you have communities being bombed and then the people flee for their lives, and then in moves the mining company,” said Price. The Canadian government and mining companies based here are under higher scrutiny as Canada signed a freetrade agreement with Colombia in 2011 and since then the situation of indigenous peoples in that country have only worsened. “The Canadian government has some pretty powerful economic interests in Colombia…

And in fact there are many concerns about the role Canada is playing in Colombia,” said Price.

Forcibly removing 150,000 children from their homes and brainwashing them to hate their language and culture is extreme. The 186 years of torture, rape and confinement in the name of God is atrocious and extreme. Breaking an International Peace Treaty and attacking an allied government is extreme. The deliberate suppression of appropriate history in the educational system is also extreme. Therefore the pathway towards justice and reconciliation must be extreme.

I cannot speak for all Haudenosaunee people and much less the entirety of the indigenous population but I can make what I think are relevant suggestions which may lead to reconciliation.

This is what honour means to me, this is my Honour List:

1. The consensual and cooperative removal of all religious structures from our territories with the hope of rebuilding them together at a time we deem appropriate.

2. An official statement from the government of Canada that the Haudenosaunee are not a conquered nation but instead a partner-nation responsible for the protection and creation of the Canadian state from 1784-1812.

3. An international admission of guilt for the crime of genocide inflicted upon the 600 plus indigenous nations by the Canadian government.

4. A rewording of the financial arrangements between Onkwehon:we governments and the Canadian government which properly honours native people and the international treaties such as the Two Row Wampum.

5. A reversal of wording to properly reflect that native people have financed Canada through the Indian Trust Fund which disappeared in 1867 and to strengthen sovereignty by providing financial aid to our governments similar to the way the USA sends funds to Israel. We are not welfare recipients.

6. Abolition of pa-

ternalist attitudes towards Onkwehon:we nations and a dismantlement of the Indian Act and Elected Council systems without the enfranchisement or assimilation of Onkwehon:we nations into the general Canadian body.

7. Recognition of our ancient and legitimate traditional governments at an international level.

8. The abolition of the land claim system to be replaced with a perpetual tax-sharing model in which original nations are compensated for loss of lands & resources by taking a fair percentage on all tax dollars generated from those lands.

9. A complete overhaul of the Canadian education system with direct input from Onkwehon:we scholars and elders.

Event organizers also drew parallels between the situation facing indigenous people in Colombia and indigenous people here in Canada. Price put it bluntly, “In Canada and in Colombia and in many other parts of the world, the rights of indigenous peoples to make those decisions are being assaulted. And why? Because on indigenous lands are natural resources that third parties want to exploit for money.”

She also made it clear that the solution both here and abroad is the same, “Indigenous peoples everywhere have the right to make decisions

about what will happen in their territory.”

Price concluded by inviting people to get involved, “We reach out to First Nations in Canada to join with us, as we join with First Nations in defending their rights here in Canada, to build a movement to support our brothers and sister in Colombia… Together we are stronger, together we absolutely can make a difference.”

Backgrounder on Bill C-10 By the Anti-Colonial Committee of the Law Union of Ontario

The Federal Government introduced Bill C-10 in Parliament through Justice Minister Peter MacKay on November 5, 2013, and it was discussed at the Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Human Rights on Dec. 3, 5, 10, and 12, 2013. The Bill will amend the Criminal Code to include a section on the possession and trafficking of contra and tobacco.

Contraband tobacco is defined as any to acco product that does not comply with the relevant federal and provincial statutes. Importing, stamping, marking, manufacturing, distributing and paying duties and taxes on such products are all regulated by statute.

The RCMP considers the definition of contraband tobacco to include product to be sold on First Nations’ reserves that has been diverted to the wider market. The RCMP believes that certain businesses on reserve are major distributors of contraband tobacco and that considerable amounts of contraband cigarettes are manufactured on reserve in unlicensed factories.

Committee testimony from anti-smoking advocates stated that “based on reports from the RCMP and others, on Kahnawake near Montreal, there are about ten [cigarette factories]; there's one on Tyendinaga, near Belleville; and there are maybe a dozen or so on Six Nations near Brantford. Those are in Canada. On the U.S. side of Akwesasne, there were 10 a couple of years ago, but it may be slightly less than that now. These are the primary sources. Well over 90% of the contraband in Canada originates from these unlicensed [cigarette] factories.”

As such, some irst Nations individuals and communities do not recognize certain federal or provincial laws limiting their rights in relation to tobacco n addition, prices of tobacco products are usually lower on reserve because provincial taxes and sales taxes (both federal and provincial) are not included in the prices of these products when purchased by customers who are Status Indians Though anyone other than a Status Indian is supposed to pay all taxes if they purchase tobacco products on reserve, this does not always occur and certain businesses on reserve are major distributors of contraband tobacco.

Currently, no specific offence relating to “contraband tobacco” is found in the Criminal Code. Prosecutors have an array of offences at their disposal to assist in the prosecution of some tobacco smugglers, including fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, etc. Currently, police and prosecutors complain of unpaid xcise Act fines being ignored by offenders.

THE CURRENT LEGAL FRAMEWORK Currently, prosecutions for contraband tobacco-related offences can be conducted either under the Excise Act,

In comparison, all police forces may enforce Criminal Code provisions. y creating specific provisions on contraband tobacco in the Criminal Code, similar to the ones found in the Excise Act, 2001, the amendments proposed in Bill C-10 ensure that all police forces – including provincial forces like the OPP and SQ – are mandated to pursue these new specific tobacco offences.

According to the

news release that accompanied the introduction of Bill S-16, the precursor 50-ofto Bill C-10, a new 50-of ficer P Anti ontraband Tobacco Force will be created to “target organized crime groups engaged in the production and distribution of contraband tobacco, to reduce the contraband tobacco market, and combat organized crime networks.” At this point, it is not known where the new force will focus its attention.

According to OPP Chief Superintendent Gary Couture: “This proposed act will give us more tools. t will allow our officers to act differently. Now that it will be considered a criminal offence, they will be able to investigate further than they can at the moment any time they pull someone over.

At the moment, provincial law does not allow us to become involved unless we have probable cause. With the bill, they will have more power along those lines. Now that it will be considered a criminal offence, there may be arrests.”

According to the Department of Justice, the bill proposes amendments to the Criminal Code in order to provide for a new offence of traf trafficking in contra and tobacco. The particular activities that are prohibited include the offer for sale, possession for the purpose of selling, as well as distributing and transporting of such tobacco.

Upon indictment the maximum penalty is up to fi e years imprisonment, and on summary conviction it is up to six months. The bill provides for mandatory minimum terms of imprisonment for individuals who have been convicted of this particular offence for the second or subsequent times. For a second conviction it's up to a minimum of 90 days. For a third conviction it's up to 180 days of minimum imprisonment, and then for

a fourth or subsequent conviction it's up to two years less a day.

In order to have these penalties imposed requires the presence of or the involvement of 10,000 cigarettes or more of contraband tobacco, or 10 kilograms of raw leaf tobacco, or 10 kilograms of any other tobacco product.

Under the 2001 Excise Tax Act, only the federal government may prosecute this offence, whereas under Bill C-10, the federal government and the provinces may do so.

So practically speaking, it's likely that the RCMP will lay charges and the federal prosecution service will prosecute in many cases, and in other cases, either form of law enforcement will lay a charge and then the provincial prosecutors will prosecute.

LEGAL ISSUES ARISING FROM THE CHANGE A broad new series of Criminal Code contraband tobacco offences will be created with mandatory minimum jail ofsentences for repeat of fenders. The bill will allow the Crown to proceed by indictment (leading to mandatory minimum sentences being triggered) where it decides to.

The OPP and Surete du Quebec will become much more actively involved in investigating and prosecuting contraband tobacco offences.

Criminal matters proceeding by indictment are much more likely to qualify for the issuance of a warrant to search a premises under the search warrant sections of the Criminal Code. search Expanded powers of vehicles or other locations will be permitted in cases where the police have reasonable grounds to suspect the possession of contraband tobacco for the purpose of trafficking, for example, in the case of the stop ...CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Tobacco: History & Health

As I place Mr. X on a breathing machine he flashes me a look from his terrified eyes. know this look well, the desperate cry for help of a drowning man. But he is not drowning in water. He has spent a lifetime drowning in smoke and his lungs are now so shattered that his tiring, heaving shoulders are unable to bring in enough air for his next breath. I will not be able to pull him back to shore.

His lungs are failing, he is dying and he knows it.

He is not the only patient I will see this shift who is dying from a smoking related disease.

Mrs. Y is clutching her chest and short of breath having suffered a heart attack and Mr. Z who will no longer be able to use the right side of his body or even communicate has had a massive stroke. All were struck down by cigarettes.

Tobacco has a long and complex history.

From its original sacred and ceremonial purpose amongst the Ongwehon:we people of Turtle Island to its commercialization and engineering into the cigarette, one of the most addictive products in the world, there is much to tell.

Like sugarcane, tobacco was one of the plants that through human labour could be transformed into an immense source of wealth.

Tobacco was the original economic cornerstone for

the colonization of North America and the building of the United States of America. It was known to the early colonists as “brown gold.”

John Rolfe, whose fame is partially due to him having “married” Pocahontas, was the first colonist to successfully commercialize and grow the plant on a cash-crop scale for the European market.

Between 1618 and 1640 the harvest of tobacco grew from 20,000 lbs to 1.5 million lbs and alongside it the European settler population jumped from 18,000 to 78,000. Britain’s global empire was largely kick started y profits from this commodity spawning further waves of colonization across the world. Because of the huge amount of labour required for its cultivation and processing, tobacco production also lead to the development of a slavery based economy.

Cigarettes were essential in maintaining troop morale during the First and Second World War, calming the nerves of soldiers and providing them with what has been called “a mild but smelly antidepressant.” In a major deal with the US during World War Two, Britain spent more on tobacco then it did on tanks or ships or planes.

In the second half of the 20th century, the tobacco industry continued to flourish using cutting edge marketing to

build up a vast consumer base, maintaining it by suppressing the health harms associated with it and replacing consumers lost to cancer, lung and heart disease by advertising to the next generation of smokers: children.

As early as the 1930’s the association between smoking and lung cancer as well as lung and heart disease was becoming clear. This information – well known by Big Tobacco – was expertly suppressed. A Tobacco executive once famously said “We don’t smoke the sh*t, we just sell it. We reserve the right to smoke for the young, the poor, the black and the stupid.” Public health advocates only began to win concessions in the 1990’s. These years also saw major successful lawsuits against the tobacco companies. In a joint legal action, 46 US states were able to win $200 billion in compensation for the healthcare costs of treating sick smokers.

Tobacco control methods such as bans on advertising, restrictions on where people were allowed to smoke, clear messaging about the harms of smoking and – last but not least – high levels of taxation were successful at dramatically decreasing smoking rates over the last 20 years.

Now tobacco is at the forefront of an economic renaissance for Haudenosaunee people. What does this mean for the

health of Ongwehon:we and non-Ongwehon:we peoples?

Poverty has a powerful impact on the health of a community. It determines other important factors necessary for good health such as housing, nutrition and education. It is estimated that child poverty rates are over 50% on most reserves and housing and access to clean drinking water is grossly inadequate.

The Ongwehon:we tobacco trade is undeniably improving the income and along with it, the economic independence and self-determination of Ongwehon:we communities. After centuries of impoverishment and abuse, Ongwehon:we people are using the prof profits from tobacco as a nation-building tool much in the same way that Britain and America did, minus the slavery and colonization of other peoples.

On the other hand it is undeniable that taxfree cigarettes defeat one of the key methods for improving public health afby making cigarettes af fordable. However, Ongwehon:we people haven’t taxed Canada for the social and healthcare costs that alcohol – a harmful European substance – has caused their communities.

So why are cigarettes so addictive and why are they so harmful to human health? Cigarettes are the ultimate delivery system for nic-

otine. Their design and additives allow smoke to be delivered deep into the lungs where they contact the small blood vessels of the body allowing a large amount to be taken up by the blood. This in turn circulates to the heart and brain. Nicotine is both an upper and downer. It powerfully stimulates the reward centres in the brain generating feelings of well-being and relaxation while also causing the release of activating neuro-transmitters which sharpen the mind and make the user more alert.

At the same time as nicotine is pleasuring our nervous system, the products of tobacco combustion are irritating our airways, blood vessels and toxins are building up in our cells.

This leads to cancers of the mouth, throat, lung as well as emphysema and bronchitis and of course heart attacks and strokes amongst many other diseases.

Every single shift that I work in the emergency department, I treat patients with smoking related diseases. Smoking is the number one cause of preventable deaths.

Fifty percent of cigarette smokers will die a premature and tobacco related death.

Unlike the doctors of the 1950’s who proudly endorsed cigarettes, I would like to see cigarettes drop off the face of the planet. However, as much as I pray for

that day to come, it is a long way off. Smoking rates are declining in developed countries but they are sky-rocketing in developing countries where the advertising and marketing tricks that big tobacco perfected so well over the last century are being used to recruit millions of new smokers, many of them children.

In the historical context of colonialism and its systematic destruction of traditional Ongwehon:we economies it does seem hypocritical for Canada and the United States to allow companies like Phillip Morris and JR Reynolds to continue profiting from to acco while criminalizing the Native industry.

I would hope that just as tobacco helped nation build for the United States so too it may allow Ongwehon:we nations to rebuild their sovereignty and along with that other economic opportunities that are less harmful than commercial Tobacco. In the meantime, attempting to deny them this right will only lead to further poverty, marginalization and criminalization all of which are powerful contributors to ill health and chronic disease.

Given the overall tone of the Parliamentary Debate and in Committee hearings where we can see repeated attempts to link contraband tobacco with organized crime, drugs and weapons, it is likely that judicial authorizations to search (warrants) that are sought by police will likely be for search by dynamic entry

(i.e. no-knock raids by SWAT-type police forces with access to automatic weapons, flash ang explosive devices, etc) and allow for nighttime execution to allow for the element of surprise.

It appears from Committee testimony that the police intend to set up more interagency investigations groups and task forces like what is done in Cornwall with RCMP,

CBSA, OPP, Ontario Ministry of Finance, and the Cornwall and Akwesasne Mohawk Police.

Further, more vehicle stops and checkpoints and interdiction choke points will likely be set up to further restrict movement of contraband tobacco, especially along the 401 Corridor and outside of reserve territories.

Given the tone of the

CHEYENE FOX ARTICLE FROM PAGE 3 and girls are three times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. And according to Amnesty International, Indigenous women are fi e to se en times more likely to die from these acts of violence.

What does John Fox know about his daughter’s last day? According to the police report, he knows that the owner of the condo where Cheyenne fell from is a male. He knows that his daughter was lured into the sex trade just weeks prior to her death. He knows that the condo owner was a ‘John’ and had brought Fox to his place for sexual services.

He knows that the condo owner told police that at one point shortly after she arrived, Cheyenne want want-

ed to leave but he blocked the door, which may have caused her to retreat to the balcony.

Yet the police are treating the condo owner as a victim because he told police that he tried to save Cheyenne from jumping off the balcony. Also, police will not release his name nor his address to the Fox family who are Anishinabe and very spiritual. They have been unable to give Cheyenne a spirit ceremony, which is traditionally held in the location where the loved one died. And Toronto Police are denying Cheyenne’s family that right.

John Fox recalled that police knocked on his door the day after his daughter died and informed him that Cheyenne had fallen at 10:30 the night before and by 8am, her death was

ruled a suicide. The only witness was the ‘John’ whose condo she was in.

Fox explained that it took months of rallying against the Toronto Police efore they finally started an investigation into his daughter’s death and if it wasn’t for the support of the First Nations community in Toronto and their allies, her death would still be ruled a suicide.

A gathering will be held this Friday, February 14 starting at 12:30pm at Toronto Police Headquarters (40 College Street), which is hosted by No More Silence. It is for Terra Gardner, Cheyenne Fox, Bella Laboucan-McLean along with the hundreds of other First Nations women and girls across Canada who have lost their lives to violence or gone missing.

Chocolate: Food of the gods

Valentine’s Day is not complete without a box of chocolates for that special someone. The gift of chocolate, flowers and a card saying ‘I love you’, is a textbook example of how people celebrate Valentine’s Day across the western world.

Chocolate comes from a seed of a tree that only grows in tropical areas of the world. The tree is known as Theobroma cacao, which translates to ‘food of the gods.’ Cacao, also known as cocoa, was first culti ated thousands of years ago by the Mayan and Aztec people.

The discovery of chocolate has its roots in Central and South America and contains the same chemical that gives you that wonderful feeling of falling in love.

According to Mayan legend, the Goddess of Cacao (Chocolate) played a role in the Creation Story.

Blood Moon, the daughter of the Lord of the Underworld became pregnant

with twins. In order to be accepted among mankind and to prove her worthiness, she was given a big net by Grandmother and told not to come back to the village until the net was full of food. So she set out and could only find a single cob of corn. Becoming worried that she would not fill her net with food she then prayed to other Goddesses for help.

She prayed to the Goddess of Seed, Goddess of Rain and Goddess of Chocolate. They all

She gave birth to two sons on Winter Solstice, who became known as the Sacred Twins. When they grew up, they defeated the forces of the Underworld and became loved by the gods. So much so that when they passed away, one twin became a Sun

God while the other was afchanged into a woman af ter death and became the Moon Goddess.

The powerful Mayan civilization eventually weakened by internal warfare and they were defeated by the Aztec.

Fortunately, the Aztec admired Mayan religion and incorporated the Goddess

of Chocolate into their own.

The Aztecs attribute the creation of the cacao plant to their god Quet Quetzalcoatl, who descended from heaven on the beam of a morning star carrying a cacao tree stolen from the Sky World.

Cacao beans were such a huge staple among the Maya and Aztec that they were also used as a form of currency. merchants Aztec traded cacao beans with the Pueblo people. The ancient Pueblo lived in the North American southwest. According to research led by Dorothy Washburn, of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, “Since cacao does not grow outside the tropics, the discovery of plentiful traces of it far to the north indicates there was extensive trade

between these distant so societies.” think Researchers that cacao beans came from Mesoamerica, with the closest source being roughly 2,000 kilometres away from the Pueblo archaeological site at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.

Researchers also believe that Mesoamerican merchants may have bartered cacao beans for gems unique to the Southwest, such as turquoise, which was mined by the Pueblo.

Once the Spanish ‘discovered’ chocolate in Mesoamerica, they took it back to their king. Eventually, the cacao tree was taken to other colonized areas in the tropics where it was grown and cultivated. Today, two-thirds of the world’s chocolate comes from West Africa.

As Valentine’s Day draws near, it’s always good to be reminded of the importance of being in a healthy relationship: not just with our partners but with everyone around us. We need to show our loved ones how much we love and appreciate them each and every day.

What is an unhealthy

relationship? Some signs for girls and guys to watch for to know whether or not a relationship is an unhealthy one: Do you or your partner have unrealistic expectations of each other?

When entering into a relationship, it’s important to accept your partner for who they are. People often go into relationships thinking they can change certain habits or behaviours of their

partners. This often will cause conflicts and arguments. onflicts often lead to violence or abuse.

Know what you’re looking for in a partner before you begin a new relationship instead of trying to form your partner into how you want them to be or act.

If you feel you are not getting his or her full honesty then sit down with them and talk about it. If the dishonesty persists, it may be time to get out of the relationship.

Lack of trust? Is trust a big issue? Do one or both partners accuse the other of looking at the opposite sex or get mad when your partner talks to another guy or girl? If yes, then one or both partners lack trust in each other. Trust is one of the building blocks to a healthy relationship, along with love, respect, acceptance and compassion. f you find that your partner does not trust you and has absolutely no grounds as to why he or she thinks like this, then this could be a sign of an unhealthy relationship. No guy or girl should have to give their partner their passwords for their phone, email or social media. f you find your partner demanding such things then get help. Talk to someone.

This could turn into a very dangerous situation down the road and can lead to future violence and/or abuse.

Cycle of pain, betrayal, lies or blaming. All relationships have their ups

and downs, but should always move forward.

Some relationships stall for a bit and that’s normal ut if you find your relationship is in a vicious cycle of pain, betrayal, lies or blaming, then please get help. Talk to someone. No one deserves to be miserable, sad or depressed.

Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, compassion, love and respect.

Some people stay in unhealthy relationships ‘for the kids’. Kids are smart and can tell when mom or dad aren’t happy.

When children grow up and begin their own relationships, they often build on what they were taught about relationships as young children. It’s important to teach our kids when they are young, what a healthy relationship is. Lead by example.

Saying one thing and doing something totally dif different will confuse children. For example, if you teach your children not to swear, then it’s important that you don’t swear around them.

Ganohkwasra, love among us. In knowing the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship, we now know what a healthy relationship is. It is one based on mutuality, respect, trust, honesty, compassion, acceptance and most of all: love.

FEATURE COLUMN: LET'S TALK NATIVE WITH JOHN KANE

A Tale of Two Cases Last week two stories about the ongoing battle

by New York State and the U.S. federal government against the Native tobacco trade hit the papers.

In the state case (http://bit.ly/1ns6h0l), the government prosecutor joined with defense attorneys in a motion to dismiss felony charges against two men attempting to transport tobacco products from Mohawk territory to Seneca territory in March 2012.

District Attorney Mary E. Rain told the St. Lawrence County Court Judge Jerome J. Richards that she had determined there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

Among several issues that Rain described as representing “all kinds of problems with this case” was evidence she found in the case file that was favorable to the defendants. he specifically cited emails to and from the former District Attorney Nicole M. Duve dated August 14, 2012 where “She indicated in the emails that the Mohawk tribe was being singled out and local law enforcement was being unjust.”

At the federal level, the Kansas City Star reported that a “New York company admits guilt in contraband cigarette case” (http://bit.ly/1gpXtFO).

Aaron Pierce, a Seneca and former candidate for the President of the Seneca Nation was referred to as an unindicted co-conspirator in a large federal sting operation ran out of Kansas City between June 2010 and January 2012. His company, AJ’s Candy and Tobacco LLC is the “New York state tobacco wholesaler” that is the subject of the article.

According to the Star, the “wholesaler pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Kansas City to trafficking contra and cigarettes and agreed to pay up to $1 million in fines, forfeitures and res-

titution.”

The dismissal of the charges in the New York State case demonstrates what many of us have suggested for years about the discriminatory nature of law and law enforcement in the state.

But even with the sweeping of this case under the rug, there is still a failure to address any state policy, regulation or law that clearly establishes any legal authority to criminalize the Native tobacco trade.

In May 2011, I worked with New York State Senators George Maziarz and Timothy Kennedy, both from Western New York, to make a formal request to the Commissioner of the State’s Department of Taxation and Finance to state clearly and in writing exactly what the state’s policy was on the Native tobacco trade and Native product, in particular. That letter and follow- ups to that request remain unanswered but clearly lead authorities away from Seneca territory and resulted in the

concentration by State authorities on Mohawk territory.

The federal case involving Aaron Pierce and AJ’s Candy and Tobacco raises more questions than it answers. The identity question for Aaron Pierce alone could fill olumes but the core question here, too, is whether there is any clear and legitimately established policy, regulation or law that criminalizes Native trade?

The crux of this case is the US Contraband igarette Trafficking Act (CCTA). This law characterizes at a federal level, any cigarettes found in a state requiring a tax and stamp indicating the tax has been paid without a stamp as contraband with ery specific exceptions, none of which include Native trade, Native product or Native people and lands. So what is created is an unclear federal law that uses unclear state law to criminalize Native trade that supports the economy on lands that both the state

and federal governments know is not theirs.

So whether “AJ” pleads guilty to a crime, cooperates with state and federal authorities to get convictions on him and others or buys his way out of his fear of jail or a fight for so ereignty, does not mean a crime has been committed.

The question that I have for “AJ” is how can purchasing unstamped cigarettes in Kansas City for sale on Native lands be a crime between 2010 and 2012 while AJ Candy and Tobacco buys and sells unstamped Native brands everyday – including today? Is a pack of Marlboro’s on the shelf of a Native smoke shop contraband while a pack of Seneca’s is not? Where is that written?

Where is the line?

Who draws it? And who is willing to defend it?

My immediate assessment of these cases was there could only be one of three explanations here. Either this is completely arbitrary with no real law behind it with the state and feds making it up as they go along. Or they are conceding that Native product in certain undefined areas can be traded by some people under a different set of undefined laws from non-Native product. Or the entire Native tobacco trade is criminal and they just don’t know what to do about it or when to do it.

I honestly think it’s the first one ut would love to hear them admit the second.

My True Rez Shoes

By Nahnda Garlow The year I had my mastectomy I treated myself and bought a pair of Rez Hoofs. These hand painted boots are made by a couple from Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In the spirit of ‘shopping native’ I ordered a pair online.

When my boots came in the mail I felt like a kid at Christmas. There I sat in front of the Ohsweken post office using my keys as a makeshift knife to hack through all the packing tape. They were tall purple suede boots with a bold Lakota beadwork design painted on the front and they were absolutely beautiful.

My Rez Hoofs have come through snow, salt, sleet, and sand over the last two years and during every step I felt like a princess. I have worn those boots with some of the most rough looking rez get-ups you can imagine. Those late mornings when we accidentally sleep in and the kids miss the bus? I’m outside wiping the snow off my car in pyjama pants and my hus and s camouflage hunting jacket rockin’ my Rez Hoofs. Bush dogs got in the garbage again?

Never fear! It’s Super Nan scaring them away with a big stick, shouting my best “G’wan…git!” and chasing after them bush dogs with the prettiest feet on Mohawk Road.

This week I noticed a big hole in my boots. So I packed up my kids and trotted off to a certain well known shoe store

in search of new boots. A saleslady approached me as soon as I walked in.

“Can I help you?” she sneered at me. Actually sneer is generous, it was more like a hiss.

“Yes, I have a hole in my boots and I need some new ones to get me through the rest of the winter,” I said matter of factly.

The sales lady looked me over, pursed her lips in displeasure and lifted her nose high in the air.

“I’m not sure what you are going to find. e re already getting our sandals shipped in,” she said.

I looked outside, and in front of the store was a snowbank six feet high.

I looked at the saleslady and said, “Sandals? It’s February!”

She looked at me like I was from another planet and replied with emphatic disgust, “Uh, yeah…. everybody is going on vacation?!”

I wanted to burst out laughing right then and there in the middle of the shoe store. Here I was in the middle of a polar vortex with not a winter boot in sight and sandals as far as the eye could see.

This sales lady followed me through the store from aisle to aisle.

My daughters were quietly looking at the children’s shoes and I was starting to get that feeling you get when you know you’re being judged. I don’t need to put up with that, so I went to get my kids to leave. The sales lady said to me in the most condescending way she could, “We would prefer it if your children didn’t try on the shoes.”

This shocked me.

What else does one do

in a shoe store? I asked, “Why not?”

She replied, “It really messes with our stock.”

Let me paint you some context here. My kids and I were in a discount shoe store for all of ten minutes and were the only customers there. y fi e year old was ery neatly trying on one pair of shoes. I tried to reason with the saleslady about the situation, but she walked over to my child and hovered over her as if she were a bull in a china shop about to destroy the place, even taking a pair of shoes right from my daughters hands.

Everything in my guts wanted to fight this lady. It was like I could hear the screams of the last seven generations of injustice against my people racing through my mind. Suddenly I was in a situation with my two kids watching me and I had a choice: engage in a very negative battle by being nasty right back to this lady or to somehow respond with a good mind, using tact and wisdom to protect my children from the shame that this person was trying to inflict upon us.

I addressed the saleslady in a respectful way and told her we would be leaving. Somehow, I gathered my fury and got my kids out of that store without being rude and without allowing her to make me or my children feel ashamed.

I guess the old adage, “…you can tell a lot about a person by the shine of their shoes…” is still taken literally by some? And if that were the case in this situation; what could she tell about me from

looking at my Rez Hoofs?

To the lady who tried to shoe shame me: my boots are salt stained from every trek through the winter snow running errands to take care of my family. My boots are hand painted in brightly coloured Lakota designs.

Even though they are falling apart, they still make me feel beautiful.

Would you rather I hid

all my colours behind a wall of grey plastic? My boots have a hole worn through at the sole on one side. Just like me, they are vulnerable. I am a mom and sometimes my turn to buy shoes comes last.

I am okay with that because it means my family’s feet are warm, clean and safe from the ice and cold. These are my ‘True Rez Shoes’ and although

you look down your nose at me I am not ashamed of them. I wear them with dignity and hold my head high because in these shoes I have done my job well, even in the midst of great heartache and pain. I might not ever be in need of sandals for a vacation in February, but I will forever be in need of respect.

Demons come from behind to start 2014 CLax season

SIX NATIONS – “It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win,“ said Ohsweken Demons afveteran Tom Montour af ter Saturday night’s home opener for both the Demons and the Southwest Cyclones of the Canadian Lacrosse League.

It took a second half rally to do it, but the C-Lax defending champions, the Ohsweken Demons, opened the new 2014 season with an exciting 21-19 win come-from-behind over their Iroquois Lacrosse Arena roommates, the Southwest Cyclops, Saturday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

Both CLax franchises will be playing out of the ILA this season.

The off floor officials, score keeper, and penalty time keeper, were all fill ins for the night and did their very best to keep up, but the wide open scoring and several penalties along the way seemed to overwhelm them at times causing several long delays while the situation got sorted out with the help of referees. Even the PA announcer came down with laryngitis and could not attend, which led to the Two Row Times’ own eff oss to fill in where he could.

“With all the delays and that, it was hard to get any kind of momentum going,” said Montour. “But it was a good character win for us. Now we know that next week (when these same two teams meet again), what to bring to the table. We can’t come out flat footed and keep

working our butts off, so we don’t end up with a score like this.”

Jake Lazore started in goal for the Demons, but after a shaky start, he was replaced by Brenner Jacobs, who recorded the win.

Ryan Campbell delivered the first two goals of the game, the first assisted by Kim Squire.

The Demons trailed 8 after the first uarter and 13-10 at the half.

But despite the technical glitches caused by coaches and players on both sides, when it came to the game itself, the Demons slowly started turning it into a very exciting come-frombehind, second half win.

On goals scored by Tom Montour, Elijah Printup, and three back-to-back goals by Wayne VanEvery, the Demons evened the game at 15-15 by the end of the third quarter, setting up for a wild final minutes.

Southwest, Mike Burk took the lead back for the Cyclops from Cam Murphy to open the forth quarter.

Blue Hill answered with a pair of Demons goals to hand hsweken the first lead of the game at 17-16.

Cyclops’ Bradley Kri tied it up again from Dan Ransom, only to see Chris Attwood erase the lead 15 seconds later. Matt Spangler tied it at 18-18 before Chris Attwood wrestled the slim lead back for Ohsweken with nine minutes remaining.

Blue Hill added a cushion goal, but Cyclops’ Jimmy Purves brought Southwest to within one of the Demons with just under a minute and a half remaining. The Cyclops pulled their goalie for an extra man, but Tommy Montour made ‘em pay with an empty netter, with 58 seconds remaining, which the Demons ran down for the win.

Chrysler was generally pleased with the character win.

“Ugly, one goal or 10 goals, it’s still a win,” he said after the game.

Before the game Chrysler warned his team that the Cyclops would come at them right off the hop and that they had better be ready for that.

“All the credit goes to the guys in that dressing room,” he said. “All we do as coaches is take notes and write down names.

But still, from management on down, the end result is how we finish on the floor.

He was especially proud of how his veterans stepped up to the plate, didn’t get frazzled and methodically took the lead away from Southwest for the win.

Leading the Demons offensively were: Chris Attwood (4G, 4A), Wayne VanEvery (7G), Tom Montour (5G, 2A), and Blue Hill

(4G, 3A).

For the Cyclops, it was Ryan Campbell (3G, 1A), Pat McCrory (3G), Jim Purves (3G), and Kim Squire (1G, 2A).

This Friday night, Feb 14th, Valentines Day, the yclops will e the official home team against the “visiting” Ohsweken Demons at the ILA for an 8 o’clock start. Judging by the intensity of Game #1, for both of these teams, it should be a barn-burner.

Saturday Feb. 15th, Southwest will be in Durham to face the Turf Turfdogs. Then on Monday,

Corvairs cling to first after second loss

By Jim Windle CALEDONIA - Saturday night in Caledonia, the Corvairs shook off Thursday’s 1-0 loss in Thorold to sink the Port Colborne Pirates ship 7-3, out-shooting their guests 40-24 along the way.

The Pirates scored first with yall edyard s goal at of the first period. It didn’t take long for Spencer Gourlay to get that one back, at 3:53, assisted by Cody Brown and Kyler Nixon.

the Corvairs ahead at 16:30 with a short-hander assisted by Cody Brown to end the first period with a 2-1 Caledonia lead.

Brown was having a night for himself and scored the next three

Caledonia consecutive goals, two in the second and his third to open the third period, sandwiching a short-hander between two powerplay goals. He also added two assists.

Scott Dorian and Connor Murphy added two more in the third to put the Corvairs ahead 7-1. The Pirates’ Matt Ceko and Spencer Fox scored late goals to make the 7 final score.

It was a goaltenders duel in Thorold as the Blackhawks’ Brendan Po-

lasek and Caledonia ProFit Corvairs’ Colin Furlong both brought their “A” games to the Jr. “B” matchup, Thursday night.

Sobchak Owen scored the game’s only goal at 13:21 of the third period, to hand the Corvairs only their second loss of the season.

But the story of the game was all about Polasek and Furlong as they turned aside a total of 69 shots between them.

Polasek was marginally busier but held his ground for the shut out

win.

This week’s games include what could be the most important matchup of the season so far as the Corvairs take on the St. Catharines Falcons for a classic four-pointer in St Catharines, Friday night.

It will be the last time these two teams will meet before the playoffs, which begin at the end of February.

Caledonia will keep the show on the road Saturday night in Ancaster when they face the Avalanche.

The final games of the regular season include a rare Monday nighter, Feb. 17th, in Fort Erie, then, at home to Ancaster, Fri., Feb. 21st, and again at home against Thorold Saturday Feb. 22nd.

The Falcons saw action on Tuesday night, Feb. 11th, against Niagara Falls, and will face Port Colborne on Friday the 21st to complete their regular season schedule.

Bantam heartbreaker at the Gaylord Powless Arena

By Jim Windle OHSWEKEN - The Six Nations Bantams’ disappointment could only be matched by the Norwich Knighthawks’ elation Sunday afternoon at the Gaylord Powless Arena in a 5-5 tie game.

Six Nations thought they had made it past a very hard working Norwich club in Southern Counties playoff action, with Cecil Monture’s late game goal, but it wasn’t over yet. stormed Norwich into the Six Nations zone and attacked the net throwing Six Nations into a momentary fit of chaos, just long enough to tie the score again at 5-5 with 16 seconds remaining, to earn the point for the tie game.

Six Nations took a 2 lead in the first period with goals by Davin

Whitlow. The second was a beauty, as the speedy Whitlow shot down the right wing from his own blue line putting fakes on Norwich defenders to put himself right in front of Norwich goaltender Aric Pedley before lifting a wrist shot high to the stick side.

Dylan Morrison performed almost the same act at the other end of the ice for Norwich, but used a backhander to beat Jesse Longboat in the Six Nations net, to end the first period with Six Nations leading 2-1.

Although Six Nations carried more territorial play in the second period, many of the shots fired on Pedley were low percentage shots from far out or bad angles.

At the three-minute mark, Branden Briggs evened the score at 2-2 after Longboat made a

first and a second sa e but his defense could not clear the puck before Briggs buried the second rebound.

With 34 seconds remaining in the period, Cecil Monture took the puck behind the Norwich goal and put a pass onto the waiting stick of captain, Tanner Jonathan to send the teams into the third period with Six Nations clinging to a 3-2 lead.

Thirty seconds into the frame, Gage Deborahraeve surprised Six Nations to even up things again. Then, 2:19 later, Norwich struck again to take the 4-3 lead with Tyson Simpson’s goal.

That set up the thrilling final minute of the game when Nick Martin and Norwich’s Morrison did their dramatics to end the game in a 5-5 tie.

Knighthawks shut down Buffalo in 9-6 win

By Jeremy Pike After leading 5-0 at halftime, the Rochester Knighthawks (4-2) held on for a 9-6 win in the 'Thruway Rivalry' over the visiting Buffalo Bandits (5-2) before a crowd of 9,280 at Blue Cross Arena on Saturday night.

The first uarter of the game was dominated by the goalies. Matt Vinc for the Knighthawks pitched a shutout, high-

lighted by numerous saves on the doorstep.

Anthony Cosmo's performance for the Buffalo Bandits was no less splendid, only spoiled by Joe Walters' shorthanded goal at 10:31, assisted by Dan Dawson. That goal marked the latest opening goal in an NLL game so far this season.

In the Knighthawks scored four times in less than four minutes, getting started with Mike

Accursi scoring at 8:46, assisted by Cody Jamieson. Cory Vitarelli then scored twice, first at 10:06 with assists from Joel McCready and Cody Jamieson, then against at 11:38 assisted by McCready again. Dawson finished the scoring at 12:39 in transition with assists from Brad Self and Vinc. The Knighthawks went into halftime with the 5-0 lead, marking the first team in andits

team history that they've een shut out in the first half. stormed Buffalo back as Mark Steenhuis opened the scoring in the third quarter at 8:39 with assists from Ryan Benesch and Jamie Rooney.

Benesch then scored at 9:22 with assists from Dhane Smith and Kevin Brownell. Then at 11:32, John Tavares scored with a behind-the-back bouncer from Smith and Steenhuis. At 12:09, Joe Resetarits scored with assists from Benesch and Shawn Williams to bring the score to 5-4, Knighthawks. Cody Jamieson then halted the Bandits run at 14:49 with a power play goal. The score would remain 6-4 at the end of the third.

Vitarelli extended Rochester's lead to 7-4 at 1:06 into the fourth with an assist from Joel McCready. The Bandits then brought the game back within two on a goal from Chad Culp at 3:53 with an assist from Anthony Cosmo. Accursi then brought the lead back to three at 5:04 with assists from Jamieson and Dawson. McCready then extended the

lead to 9-5 at 9:12 with an assist from Dawson. Benesch scored on the power play at 13:19 with an assist from Williams, but penalty trouble for the Bandits would end any chance of a comeback.

Walk With Us campaign brings lacrosse to Edmonton kids

EDMONTON – The Arrows Express Sports’ ‘Walk With Us’ campaign, powered by Under Armor Sports Clothing, went on the road to Edmonton with the National Lacrosse League’s Rochester Knighthawks recently. The ambitious program aims to introduce youth at selected reserves and urban centres a chance to discover the Creator’s Game, maybe for the first time.

Carolina Former Hurricane’s Brandon Nolan, son of Ted Nolan and brother of L.A. King’s Jordan Nolan, along with lacrosse stars, Jeremy Thompson, Jared Davis, and Mark Matthews, with help from Chrystal Styres, visited with an assembly of 150 kids at a local school the day of the Knighthawks’ game against the Edmonton

Rush, to talk about the importance of education, healthy life styles as well as the history, strength and power of the game of lacrosse.

Twenty-two of that group, 11 boys and 11 girls, were selected to also take part in a lacrosse clinic to teach them the basics of lacrosse, as well as the spiritual significance of the game given to the Haudenosaunee to settle conflict in a peaceable manor.

The “Arrows Express Sports’ Walk With Us” campaign has an aggressive goal to put a lacrosse stick into the hands of as many at-risk children as possible, both Native and non-Native, across all of Turtle Island. The program is also designed to offer young boys and girls the fun and exercise of lacrosse as an alternative to sitting around and playing computer games

The Arrows Express Sports Walk With Us campaign went on the road with the Rochester Knighthawks recently to speak with elementary school aged kids about the importance of education and a healthy lifestyle through the game of lacrosse. Walk With Us team members Brandon Nolan, Jeremy Thompson, Jared Davis, and Mark Matthews, with help from Chrystal Styres, spent some quality time with about 150 students at an assembly at a local Edmonton school. 11 boys and 11 girls were selected to take part in a basic lacrosse camp later in the day, before the NLL game between the Knighthawks and the Edmonton Rush. ‘The Separation’ EP Pulls it Together

This time last year, the Jasper band’s Matthew Jesus Miller and drummer Bill Wood travelled on their own dime, to the west coast to be part of a Native Music Showcase in Victoria, British Columbia. The hard work and ambition behind this band seems limitless with the talent to back it all up.

Rather than clutter the world with more plastic and aluminum based material (or whatever compact disks are made of) Jasper released their latest 5 song EP ‘The Separation’ on February 1, 2014 as a digital download on iTunes and other online music distributors.

A deluxe version of the album will be released on a USB key and will include artwork, decals and three bonus tracks. The tireless engine behind Jasper is Six Nations Mohawk singer/songwriter Matthew Miller, cousin to two-time Juno winning Blues-cat Derek Miller.

Jasper is Matt’s third band pulling together sounds and experiences from his previous two bands: The Descendants and Jesus Murphy, which saw 3 different incarnations with 3 different musicians. His musical roots lean towards hard rock and he is a young master in the game. The Separation is is described as a combination of Soul, Blues and ountry influenced by the great musicianship found on Six Nations such as The Pappy Johns Blues Band, Tru Rez Crew, Lacey Hill, Robbie Robertson and the list goes on.

If you think the title of the album is an umbrella over a series of heartbreak songs, you’d be wrong. The Separation speaks to the foundation from where the album was created: with co-producer Tim “2oolman” Hill in Manitoba and Miller in Ontario. Using their wits and technology they collaborated via cellphone conversations, texts, BBM messaging and Facebook

chats. There is a definite departure from the hard rock sounds of Jesus Murphy and I would say an almost dancey quality to these new songs on ‘Help Me’ and ‘Shimmer’. The power ballad, ‘Powerful Love’ would make a great wedding song or romantic soundtrack to a Valentine’s date. Each track is proof of great songwriting with balanced production. It would be remiss of me not to mention Miller’s dynamic vocals which are both piercing and pleasing. Haudenos-

aunee inspired singing at its finest.

As I write this review Miller is on his way to Manitoba where he has been selected as one of 18 participants in the 7th Aboriginal Music Program (AMP) Camp. There he will hone his business and artistic skills for one week. Upon returning to Six Nations he will perform at the Great Theatre on the same bill as Anishinabe funny man and CBC podcast host Ryan McMahon on February 18th.

Six Nations man competes in world ice carving competition

By Jen Mt. Pleasant OTTAWA – Six Nations own, Ryan Hill competed in the annual Winterlude Ice Carving Competition in Ottawa last weekend.

Winterlude is held in the nation’s capital every year and celebrates the season.

In an interview with the Two Row Times, Hill explained why he wanted to give ice carving a try, “I seen ice carving before and just wanted to try it.

I love carving and making things, so anything that someone makes with their hands, I like to see.

I also wanted to get into competitions to measure my abilities against others.”

Hill, who resides in Akwesasne with his young family, also signed up for the Winterlude Ice Carving competition last year. This is where his journey began. “Last year I was entered into the public challenge and won 1st place with my piece

entitled, Native Spring” The best part of ice carving, Hill explained is, ‘the way that ice cuts and the look of crystal that comes naturally to ice.’

After his competition win last year, the local newspaper in Akwesasne ran a story on his win and he was asked to do an ice carving for the grand opening of the new casino hotel in the summer of 2013.

This past fall, Hill joined the Canadian Ice Carvers Society. They had workshops to introduce new people to ice carving. Asked on whether the tools used are the same as those used in soapstone carving, Hill explains, “The tools are different, larger for one thing. Your main tool is a 3 inch chisel, along with chainsaws and die grinders fitted with a nasty it called the pine apple bit.”

On what is most dangerous about ice carving, he said, “Ice carving is very dangerous, from slipping

ing machinery designed to remove material very quickly. You only get 2

hours to carve your piece so speed is a factor. The time constraint only adds to the level of stress and danger.”

Despite potential dangers involved in ice carving, Hill was very grateful to be a participant in the international competition last weekend which included carvers from China, Japan and Russia to mention a few.

He competed in 3 different disciplines and was scored in 7 different categories by 3 judges. He entered in the one block competition. The other two categories were, 2 man 18 block and 8 block solos.

Hill was honored to be among some of the world’s best carvers. The judges gave him a 5th place, 10th place and 3rd place score.

The goal of going into the competition, according the Hill, was to see how he measured up at the world stage level. One judge was a master carv-

er from Japan and spoke very little English, Hill explained.

Even under stress of the competition, he managed to find humor, The Mexican Carvers thought I was one of them and kept speaking Spanish to me,” Hill chuckled.

Hill has earned his spot in ice carving at the international level, “When it comes to ice carving I still have a lot to learn which is good.

Keeps my interest. I also helped with projects around Confederation Park and the city. So I got more experience in ice. I really appreciate the help of Iko Kombiyoshi the president of Canadian Ice Carvers Society, who has been instrumental in giving me this opportunity.”

Great food comes from the heart

By Joe Farrell A common misconception is that amazing food needs fancy cookware and the latest kitchen technologies. The appearance of a kitchen does not necessarily dictate the quality of the food coming out of it. Don’t think that a makeshift kitchen with an oven door that doesn’t close quite right is less capable of producing restaurant quality food than a kitchen full of trained chefs. Sometimes meals cooked over a simple campfire are the most delicious. It is the ingredients, love, respecting and honoring the food every step of the way and good company that makes for the most memorable eating experiences.

The equipment used

in said kitchen does not need to have the fanciest All-Clad or Le Creuset cookware to make awesome food, even if cooking shows might have you believe otherwise. I prefer cooking with cast iron pots because they provide even heat distribution, a non-stick surface and are significantly cheaper than other brands of cookware.

A good pot will serve you well and last a lifetime.

Instead of spending money on the latest kitchen gadget or technology, put that money aside to invest in quality cookware. Until then love the pots and pans you have and value their role in your kitchen. Simple ingredients, simple kitchen setup, basic tools with lots of love, equals amazing food.

This Valentine s Day will e the first in many years that I will not be cooking in a restaurant kitchen. Service industry workers often work these holidays when others are spending time with their loved ones. It is important to always appreciate the time we have with loved ones and be grateful of the many working hands that bring food to our tables.

Everyone claims to have the “World’s Greatest Father” and I’m in the same boat. It is because of his unwavering guidance and support that I am where I am today. He helps me build my cake structures, he always has the best advice, and when I was told that I needed to have a flu shot in order to ha e a certain job, he was right there saying he would get one with me.

As I sit here alone eating Kale and Brussel Sprout Salad with a Maple Chipotle Pork Loin, I’m thinking about how growing up it was always a meat and potatoes kind of supper. I personally always like to try new foods; weird, strange and “what the heck is that” foods. I’ve learned that if you don’t like a food it’s probably because it

hasn’t been prepared in a way that you would like it. Don’t be afraid to step out of the norm and try something different, something new.

During my culinary school days I would bring some fancy things home and have my father try it out. He always did try, without hesitation.

In honour of my Hanih whom I have made countless dinners for, here is one of his favourite crock pot soups that I make.

Root Vegetable Soup

1 package of stewing beef cup flour 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 tsp parsley 1 tsp basil White Turnip

tomatoes Add cinnamon and nutmeg

Season and sear the meat as you would for a braise (see article on how to braise on tworowtimes.com)

Remove bone if you have it bone on

Directions:

Remove meat and add more oil if necessary Add diced onions and bay leaf and cook until onions are translucent

De-glaze the pot with a small amount of water (or vegetable/meat stock) and add canned

Place meat back in pot, cover 3/4 in liquid adding more stock or water as needed, cover and cook on the stove on medium-low or in a 350F oven until tender to the fork Let cool slightly and stir in the desired amount of chocolate Season with salt and pepper to taste Enjoy!

Carter will be missed by his siblings Roger, Farley, Bernita, Sid and Jack. Predeceased by a brother and sister. The family honoured his life with visitation at Hyde and Mott Chapel, 60 Main St S., Hagersville from 2 p.m.- 9 p.m. on Friday. Funeral Service and burial was held at Lower Cayuga Longhouse , Ohsweken on Saturday February 8th at 11 a.m.
