Cancer brings best friends even closer

SIX NATIONS - Janet Henhawk has been best friends with Stephanie Restoule since they were kids, and after learning that her friend had breast cancer, Henhawk decided she had to do something.

If she couldn’t do anything to stop the invasion of her friend’s body, she could at least do something to show her support and love by offering up her waist length hair to identify with Stephanie who has lost hers through chemotherapy treatments.

“She’s living without hair, and I didn’t want her to feel alone like that,” says Janette.

Janette began gathering sponsorships, and last Thursday afternoon, at Mikey’s Place on Second Line Road, she fulfilled her promise to herself and her sponsors by having all her hair cut off in the presence of around 70 close friends and family.

Through sponsorships gathered this past month, Henhawk collected close to $2,000 for the family.

“The hair is going to Inspirational Hearts in Brantford, which turns donated hair into wigs for chemotherapy patients who have lost theirs in the treatment process,” says Stephanie. “That’s where I got my wig.”

A little over four

weeks ago, Stephanie and her husband Sean, a Fleet Manager at GRE, were living there lives as normal young parents with two kids, aged 6 and 2 1/2, and a whole life before them. Then suddenly, in a matter of two weeks, their world suddenly changed.

“In June of this year, I noticed something different in my breast,” she recalls. “I went to the doctor a few times for mastitis, which is an infection you get in your breast from a ruptured milk duct. I’ve had that a few times, but this time I noticed there was something different.”

On June 26th, she went to her doctor who, immediately after the examination, booked her an appointment with a surgeon and a biopsy was scheduled. On July 9th, she got her results back and the news was not good.

“I had stage 3-4 breast cancer,” she says.

“And a rare, inflammatory, aggressive form of it.

On July 12, I went to the cancer clinic for the first time.”

The following Tuesday, Stephanie started her first round of chemotherapy.

“In a matter of a couple of weeks my life changed completely,” she says. “I knew there was something wrong, but I put off going to the doctor because I was afraid.”

After she told her husband the bad news, initially there was a time of shock and disbelief, which quickly turned into anger. How could something like this happen to us? Why us, why now?

“It sure was a shock when I heard,” says Sean.

“I really didn’t have any suspicions at all. But she’s pretty tough. She’s quite a woman. I try and support her as much as I can but she should be able to pull through this. You gotta believe that.”

Stephanie and Sean are now accepting the fact that they are in an epic battle against a very aggressive and relentless enemy.

“It’s just something I have been given to deal with,” says Stephanie. “I am not letting it get me down and I am just pushing forward, day by day.”

Part of the Restoule family’s game plan is a family trip to Disneyland as soon as Stephanie completes her last chemotherapy session, and before a planned mastectomy.

“I’m not going to wait,” she says. “I want us to go as soon as I can.”

She encourages women to not wait if they find something wrong, but to see a doctor as soon as you can for a diagnosis.

With this kind of enemy, Best friends Stephanie Restoule and Janet Henhawk have shared a lot through the years, but now that Stephanie has been diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer, their friendship has every day matters. become even closer. Henhawk sacrificed her waist length hair as a show of solidarity with Stephanie and collected almost $2,000 in sponsorships to go towards a planned family trip to Disneyland. CAS ousted by Band Council – Confederacy objects

SIX NATIONS – The Six Nations Elected Band Council has ordered CAS off reserve by October 1st.

There have been many protests and personal stories of broken families and broken cultural connectedness through the Brantford based agency for many years, and the issue has been a longstanding political hot potato.

Band Council and CAS already have a working agreement signed, which would allow the agency access to Six Nations until May of 2014, Council is now ordering them off, almost immediately.

CAS says they have received a letter from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (HCCC) asking the agency to stay.

Elected Chief Bill Montour is quoted saying

that he doesn’t believe the Confederacy is fully aware of the problem.

The move has once again brought the power struggle between the Confederacy and the Elected Council into the spotlight.

In total, lawyer Aaron Detlor, on behalf of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute, and Jock Hill, Secretary for the HCCC, have sent CAS at least three letters explaining their stance on the issue, both stating that the Elected Band Council has no jurisdiction over CAS and that the Confederacy fears a sudden change will put Haudenosaunee children at risk.

In the most recent letter dated September 12, 2013, on behalf of the HCCC and addressed to Andrew Koster, Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Society of Brant, Detlor, states, “… the HCCC

do not believe that the Haudenosaunee are the subject of provincial legislation, including any matters relating to our children and our future generations. With that said, we have significant concerns with respect to the “designation process” which has been initiated by the Six Nations Elected Band Council.”

He goes on to point out that there has been no engagement or consultation between the CAS and the HCCC and that, from that perspective, the Band Council cannot, “compel your removal from our territory.”

“The authority and jurisdiction in matters relating to children rests solely with the Haudenosaunee, through the structure and law of the Haudenosaunee, and in particular, with our women and our clan families,”

he writes.

It concludes by stating in no uncertain terms that the HCCC are not in favour of the Native Services Branch of Brant CAS leaving the Six Nations community, for fear that such a displacement would endanger the well being of at risk children.

Detlor also offered Koster or his staff, an invitation to meet with the HCCC, possibly the week of October 7th, to open talks with the Confederacy.

However, that suggested date is after Band Council’s Oct. 1, deadline to get off reserve.

HCCC Secretary, Leroy Hill, drafted a letter on behalf of the Chiefs and Clan Mothers dated July 6, 2006, in which he explains the role of the Clan Mothers in regards to the protection of Haudenosaunee children.

Again on April 2, 2011, Hill sent another letter on behalf of the Chiefs and Council, again underlining the duties and responsibilities of the Clan mothers regarding child welfare.

According to Detlor’s most recent communication, there has been no response from the CAS to date.

Take Back the Night BRANTFORD – About 65 women and men took part in the Take Back the Night walk last week in Brantford.

Take Back The Night is a walk to and stand up and bring attention to crimes against women and to help end sexual violence in all of its forms including sexual assault, sexual abuse, dating violence domestic violence and violence against children.

The event included a performance by the Healing and Wellness Women’s Drum Group from Brantford Native Housing who sang a gathering song and the strong woman song This song originat-

ed in the “dungeons” of the prison for women in Kingston, Ontario. A cold place filled with sexual violence and torment.

According to the group, they made this song so they could be strong, and for courage.

“This song was made by women who cared about each other,” said Norman TG Hill who participated in the walk for the first time.

“I must say, this was a very powerful song to hear,” he says. “It moved me to tears thinking of the hurting woman and children in the world. It was a very eye opening experience to attend.”

Every year on October 4th we come together to honour the lives of the missing and murdered Aboriginal women and to offer support to the grieving family members. United, we stand together to raise awareness on this very important issue. This year there will be an information forum and luncheon. This event is free of charge, however registration is required.

Mi’kmaq warriors arrested in ongoing movement against fracking

In the latest turn of events in the movement against ‘fracking’ in New Brunswick, Mi’kmaq warriors were swarmed, arrested, and charged by the RCMP for their role in the environmental struggle that is uniting Onkwehon:we people of the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy nations alongside people of the Acadian nation and other Maritimers.

Jim Pictou was charged with uttering threats, while Annie Clair and Susanne Patles were charged with mischief after their arrests over the last two weeks. Pictou and Clair were picked up on their way to speak out at a meeting in Moncton of Indian Act chiefs, while Patles was swarmed and charged by the RCMP at the first court appearance for Pictou and Clair.

In the wake of their arrests, Pictou called upon the Canadian military to intervene on the side of the Mi’kmaq against the RCMP and its harassment of the three arrestees.

In an interview with the Two Row Times on September 20, Jim Pictou – who is the cousin of the American Indian Movement member Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash who was murdered in 1975 – said that according to the 1752 Peace and Friendship Treaty with the Brit-

The arrest of the warriors occurred days before the expected return of Southwest Energy (SWN) to the province after a summer of tense encounters and growing resistance. A Facebook event was created last week calling upon anti-frackers to evict SWN once again. By late July, negotiations between the RCMP and Elsipogtog First Nation officials concluded with an agreement that SWN would be permitted to detonate eleven shot holes along the contested Line 5 route; that 25 of

35 arrestees over the course of the summer would have their charges dropped; and that a break in construction would take place until mid-September.

Pictou, who says that the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society traces back to Oka and before, told the Two Row Times that “we don’t recognize the [Mi’kmaq] Grand Council or the Indian agents, which are the Chiefs. “Jaywalking to jail” in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside

By Steve DaSilva The Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) - a people’s organization in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver made up of over 2000 drug users who live in the community – staged a protest at a meeting of the Vancouver Police Services Board last week, where a report was being tabled by Vancouver police “whitewashing the discriminatory ticketing” of the poor community’s residents for jaywalking and vending.

The protest brought out 45 members of VANDU. Vending is a local phenomenon and a survival strategy in the DTES, whereby residents

sell used and recycled goods to supplement the grinding poverty of welfare rates in B.C. VANDU reports that data obtained by the PIVOT Legal Society shows that 95% of all vending tickets and 75% of all jaywalking tickets for the City of Vancouver are issued in the Downtown Eastside, pointing to an active campaign of targeting by Vancouver police against the community’s poor residents, who are largely Onkwehon:we, but also contain a substantial portion of peoples of European, African, and east Asian origins.

The DTES consists of 5000 residents living in dilapidated Single-Room

Yet, when residents are hit with $250 vending tickets, the options

they face are either intensified poverty or criminalization. VANDU has been bringing attention to the fact that unpaid tickets often lead to arrest warrants for failures to appear in court, which become increasingly difficult for poor people lacking computers, cell phones, fixed addresses, to track and coordinate, leading to arrest, charges, and a lot of time served in remand. Over 40% of all people in prison in B.C. are in remand.

Recently, the Missing Women’s Commission of Inquiry recognized that warrants generated from non-criminal matters, such as vending and jaywalking, are a factor deterring Onkwehon:we

women from approaching the police about more serious matters.

Jaywalking to Jail is the name of a forthcoming report written by DTES community member, Aiyanas Ormond, who is associated with the Canadian chapter of the International League of People’s Struggles (ILPS) and its Indigenous Commission. ILPS-Canada is the alliance which has been actively working with Haudenosaunee land defenders at Six Nations of the Grand River, and the project cabin build solidarity project ‘Biimadasahwin’ with Darlene Necan of the Ojibway Nation of the Saugeen No. 258.

livan. Now every teacher coming out of the Ontario Institute of Social Education will have some core content in Indigenous issues, and have some increased comfort and confidence at least to be able to invite First Nations, Inuit or Metis leaders into the classrooms to actually work with them.”

When asked about the duty to consult issue, she had this to say.

“In caucus the other day, we were talking about pre, prior and informed consent,” said Bennett.

“We talked about a much more respectful way of going about meaningful consultation. I think there is an increased awareness, certainly from members of our caucus and the Liberal Party. We have seen and have lived what happens when that doesn’t happen, Particularly with this Conservative government, even since the apology and how they can rain down legislation that practically every witness at a parliamentary committee articulates huge concerns with it, yet it’s rammed through anyway.

Because it’s quite clear from other so-called consultations that they are

just wasting their breath.”

Increased funding for First Nations Education is a priority, according to Bennett.

“I think the most disturbing thing to us is that they are refusing to accept that the per-capita funding per-year for young people on reserve is so much reduced from what a student from off reserve would get in funding in a provincial system.” she said. “When you are denying the gap, it’s pretty hard to persuade people to help fund something that doesn’t exist. That has been really worrying to all of us. This is an ongoing reality.”

We asked if the Caledonia talks should reopen.

“The Caledonia discussions should be restarted,” she quickly responded. “Although I think we would hear from a lot of tables across the country that the federal negotiator really has no power to negotiate. They have been sent with a message of take it or leave it. That is pretty disappointing everywhere in Canada. Obviously they should be at the table negotiating in good faith.

Caledonia is a significant land claim that requires

resolution.”

She was pleased about the emergence of the Two Row Times and called it an important and much needed thing.

“Having more Indigenous media has made a huge difference as well as a huge presence on social media,” she said.

“I also think APTN has played a really important role. Whether I am in Owen Sound or wherever I am across the country, especially during Idle No More, non-Indigenous Canadians say to me they really enjoyed watching the news on APTN and know they can go there or to more local Indigenous media and get an accurate view of what the issues are and a way forward.

“More Indigenous media and social media plus a National broadcaster (APTN) makes a huge difference in terms of my ongoing project of irradiating ignorance,” concluded Bennett. “I will be following you on social media, I do that myself, and maybe tweet you a few comments and help celebrate what you are doing.”

By Jim Windle OTTAWA - The election has not yet been called, but the race is underway nonetheless.

The Two Row Times conducted a telephone interview with Federal Liberal Aboriginal Affairs Critic, Carolyn Bennett, about a number of issues facing Onkwehon:we families, should Steven Harpers Conservatives retain control over Parliament Hill in Ottawa after the next election.

Bennett was quick to let it be known that she was fully in favour of the Idle No More movement, because through it, many non-Natives are becoming aware of the issues, and that the protection of the environment is one point both Native and non-Natives can agree on.

But she said that in order to really begin to understand these and other issues, which have become epidemic in Canada, education is essential.

“The 96% of Canadians who are non-Aboriginal need to better understand the history, the culture, the rights, and be part of the solution, so they can be a part of

pushing the government of Canada into doing the right thing, and get on with these things,” said Bennett. “Without it, it is creating these huge gaps in health, education, educational outcomes for First Nation, Inuit, and Mete in Canada. For this to happen, education of non-Natives is vital.”

What Bennett finds really exciting about Idle No More is that it involved young people.

“From the various events I’ve been at, I have been so impressed with how young people are really beginning to understand things and are taking this seriously,” she says. “This is a very exciting time in terms of rebuilding a movement that isn’t going to take it any more.”

She said that her Liberal government is looking beyond Canada’s boarders for approaches and programs that include knowledge of Indigenous people as a core value.

She added that the RCAP (Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples) said that within the next 20 years there would be a comprehensive approach to the shared history and the ability to document

She noted that TVO held a education seminar at Trent University with a lot of teachers from the Peel region that, without waiting for the change, went out on their own and changed it.

What happened to democracy?

Brantford and the Municipality of the County of Brant have been in talks for decades over a possible border adjustment and land swap that would see a large piece of what is now under the jurisdiction of the County come into the city in exchange of other lands now within the city’s holdings.

The proposed land exchange is missing one important element – the actual titleholders, the Onkwehon:we people of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

Although the County has been relatively forthright and accommodating towards Six Nations interests in recognizing the need to involve all stakeholders, the city has not. The fundamental difference between the two political styles became glaringly evident this past Monday and Tuesday.

Monday, at Brant County Council, all present media and public were given a statement from the County explaining the current condition of the talks, from their vantage point. Six Nations Elected Council representa-

tives were at that meeting and participated in the in-camera information session.

But the next day, in stark contrast, after Brantford’s in-camera session where specific details were discussed amongst the city’s legal staff and members of council, only the Expositor and the Brant News were invited into what was supposedly a public meeting. Two Row Times reporter David Langer and a freelance journalist were not only excluded, but were shown the door, which was locked behind them by city hall security.

This is strikingly similar to the way Brantford rammed through two by-laws put in place to base their controversial injunction against Six Nations individuals on.

At that time, there were several ongoing protests at construction sites as Six Nations people stood up to the sale and development of land under recognized land claim.

In that case, the legal procedure, which includes an open and advertised public hear-

ing, was skirted when one single reporter, who just happened to be in the building at the time, was commandeered into the room to “fulfill” the city’s required public meeting.

At that time current Mayor Chris Friel was eyeing his political comeback after losing his seat to Mike Hancock and was publicly critical of what he called the “bunker mentality” of the Mike Hancock council.

He questioned the injunction happy route that Hancock’s council chose to take rather than to open discussion with Six Nations stakeholders. He also questioned how the by-laws were rushed through without public discussion or input.

But something has changed since retaking the Mayors office. Now, it is his own council’s “bunker mentality” that is selecting which media can and cannot be admitted to a public meeting. But beyond that, even if he chooses not to recognize certain media, these two individuals should have been allowed admittance as members

of the public, and were not.

The land in question is under a recognized and accepted land claim, which by rights, should be resolved before anything that may negatively impact Six Nations – like for instance a new industrial park or housing developments on prime farmland within the 7,000 acre Johnson Settlement Tract, without consultation, compensation or accommodation.

Even with provincial facilitator, Paula Dill’s intervention, the boundary talks broke down when both the city and the county could not be drawn out of their respective trenches. The County maintains that the city’s boundary trade proposal is unfair, as Brantford would receive more than it would give up in the process. No future talks have been scheduled, but if they ever start up again, Six Nations stakeholders must be a participating part of those discussions and there must be some form of consultation process applied.

FEATURE COLUMN: LET'S TALK NATIVE WITH JOHN KANE

No, Really! It’s OK to Watch Al Jazeera America I am amazed at the displaced loyalty to all things “American” that far too many Native people have. Whether it is getting all ”patriotic” every time 9-11 is mentioned or supporting American political candidates or voting in their elections or even enlisting in their armed forces. Have we forgotten that we are survivors of the most monstrous and prolonged act of genocide the world has ever known? Do we forget that for more than 100 years our children were seized from our homes, stripped of their identities, languages, cultures and dignities while being abused and crippled physically and mentally? Do we fail to acknowledge that policies exist to this day designed to conform us and assimilate our people to their laws and customs? Can we not see that in 2013 we have become so marginalized in our own lands that the occupiers can actually get away with using our images for sports mascots as though we are not real people or no

longer exist?

What’s worse, I think, is that so many are fine with all of this.

The mere mention of a country or nation that the U.S. or Canada deems “unfriendly” sends far too many Native people scurrying to their oppressors’ teats.

Even just the name of countries like Venezu-

ela, Iran, Palestine – countries whose people have never harmed our own – invokes an almost involuntary response due entirely to the propaganda we have been fed.

No matter how many times ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or CNN portray us as pitiful creatures in-

capable of taking care of ourselves in the land of milk and honey, we still flock to them or to their affiliates for our basic windows to the world and what can only be described as funhouse mirrors to view ourselves.

When I mention a viable alternative to such blather, such as Al

Jazeera or Al Jazeera America, it is actually comical to view the responses. Big eyes and “Whoa there, terrorist” are not just written on their faces but are actually uttered through the mouths of some people. Mention that I have done an interview for Al Jazeera and a step

back has even been witnessed.

I am not suggesting that anyone gets our story entirely right.

However, until there is an Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) in the U.S. market and perhaps, more importantly, in the international market, we need to examine more

critically the ridiculous talking heads that currently dominate the mainstream media. For me, Al Jazeera is the only hope on the horizon.

With the launch of Al Jazeera America, this news channel has committed itself to giving a voice to the voiceless and therein lies our

best opportunity to be heard. But we have to be willing to at least utter a few sounds first and stop running from those who would love to see us silenced. As we make noise in our own territories we need to help this new network stay true to its word by telling our stories and providing feedback. My conversations with the folks from Al Jazeera have stressed our plight in the context of many conflicts around the world and throughout history.

There is little point in waging war against the “Washington Redskins” if we are only suggesting that a name change “will make America better.” That is ridiculous! It won’t!

Mascots are not the real issue here – racism and genocide are. If no other network – sports, news or talk — is willing to have a serious discussion on how the true heirs to this continent still battle everyday to survive, not just as individuals but as peoples, then I am all in for giving my new best friend “AJ” a shot.

Let’s get a conversation going on the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Let’s expose the Doctrine of

Christian Discovery as the racist foundation the U.S. and Canada is built upon. Show the poverty, the suicides, the violence and corruption that exist on Native lands – but this time show why. Show the federal policies, state sponsored racism and crimes against humanity that continue to this day in the land of “truth, justice and the American way.”

I don’t mind for a minute telling our story from a studio devoid of fake patriotism, flag lapel pins and pro-America spin on every turn.

Let’s give Al Jazeera America a chance. What the Heck! They even have “America” in their name – for all of you who need that sort of thing.

Comfort Food for the Soul

by Nahnda Garlow It’s inevitable. The temperature goes up and down like a yo-yo for a week or two and I get sick. Exhaustion started to take over my life at supper time this weekend. I looked in the cupboards and stared blankly at the shelves.

I knew there was food in there, but was so tired I just couldn’t figure out where to start.

So I packed up the kids and went to see my parents. Dad made me some chicken soup and after a few spoonfuls I began to morph from a fading weakling into my normal chipper self. It wasn’t special soup, just some powdered chicken broth

and noodles, but it was exactly what I needed.

Seeking comfort is one of the first instincts we have as human beings. Since the beginning of time, mothers offer the breast to their crying babies and we learn that nourishment equals warmth, love and solace.

In the Cayuga language the word for breastmilk – ononkwa, has the root word for ‘love’ built right into it.

From a scientific perspective, things that taste good to your mouth release hormones in the brain which improve your mood. Hamburger Stew with Hot Bread spells perfect love to my husband and kids. When I was growing up no matter how bad the day

went, if it ended with Bean Soup everything was okay. For some of our Ongwehowe ‘cousints’ in the South it’s Tripe Soup. Once I even saw a Cree man deep fry wild rice!

Growing up my mom would make a little table and bring soup in special dishes to us if we were home sick.

Sometimes she would put tea in a fancy cup or flowers in a jar, anything to cheer the mood of feeling unwell. It was a special kind of tenderness that we got when our little bodies were working hard to get better, and it made all the difference in the world.

When it comes to our

common injuries as Indigenous people across the land, nothing leaves a more bitter taste in your

mouth than being told it’s time to toughen up.

I couldn’t believe the first time I heard someone say, “Can’t they just move off the reserve, get

jobs and move on with their lives!?” It’s a painful level of ignorance, fueled by an ethnocentric worldview sick with misinformation. It is exactly the opposite response that the genera multi generational injury warrants. It is the opposite of comfort food.

So what is re the proper response? Keeping a good mind when faced with ignorance to that degree is hard, and the ‘eye for an eye’ approach never ends well. The reality of life is that sometimes when you need comfort, and you end up having to make your own “chicken soup” even if you don’t

have the strength.

There is a great love potential here at Six and the next phase just may be in the hands of our allies. This is the time for you to pursue truth, and lift up Indigenous people wounds and all. You don’t need to rescue us from the reserve, but just to bring a little table and a jarful of flowers while we work out the healing going on inside. It is the practical response to the Idle No More movement, and comfort food for the soul that will last for generations. It is stronger than your racial guilt, it is mightier than pity. It is a true and merciful love for humanity that can break through the pain and heal a man, a family, and a nation.

Lakotas face off with white supremacists in Leith, North Dakota

LEITH, North Dakota On Sunday, September 22nd, Lakotas and Dakotas arrived in Leith, near the Standing Rock Indian Nation, to defend the town from an invasion and takeover by white supremacists.

Chase Iron Eyes, Lakota from Standing Rock, said on arriving in Leith, “We don’t try to persuade anyone. Warriors do not need to be coerced; we go because we love our children.”

Iron Eyes said Standing Rock Lakotas arrived to the sound of war cries.

Lakotas and Dakotas led by Standing Rock and Last Real Indians delivered powerful words during the rally. They were joined by non-Indians of many races from the Dakotas who arrived by caravan. Hundreds rallied against the white supremacists known for violence and hate crimes.

Dakota grandmother Phyllis Young promised that the Lakota and Da-

kota grandmothers were ready to take on the white supremacists.

“You are in Dakota territory.

“Lakota means allies, Dakota means peace, and that is what we continue to struggle for in this land.

“My uncle stormed the shores of Normandy to eliminate your forerunners, the Nazis, that killed millions all over the world, so we know what your intent is, to criminalize Dakota territory.

“You will not do it.

The grandmothers will stand up to you. The women will take you on.”

The rally began before the Town Hall meeting, with the crowd shouting, “Go home!”

Chase Iron Eyes told the crowd facing the white supremacists, “We came here today to our country.

We have been living here for tens of thousands of years. We know we have a harsh history between the races.”

“But as I look where the Nazi flag flies, where the swastika flies, I know we have called their bluff.

Those who spread hate

rely on other white people to spread their fear of non-white people,” he told the crowd.

“We have evolved. We do not hate white people.”

“You have come here thinking that you can exploit the ignorance of white people.”

Facing the white supremacists as they were arriving, Iron Eyes said the Lakotas will not react until they are attacked.

“We are evolved human beings. I think you know you represent a dy-

ing cause.”

“You have nothing.

That swastika is even our symbol.”

“You have appropriated our intellectual properties because you have none.”

“You’re 30 miles from our border. If you think we’re going to let you come into our territory and affect our children, you’ve got another thing coming. What you see here are the mouthpieces.

The warriors aren’t even here. You have come here

thinking we are going to react out of fear, but we won’t do that. We are Dakota and Lakota people.”

“You are a dying cause.”

State troopers and a riot squad were assembled, with badge numbers removed, as the town hall began. Inside the town hall, the National Socialist Movement attempted to convince the town they are not racists. After music played with bagpipes, the National Socialist Movement, known for its

three-decade old lawsuit enjoining the St. Regis Tribal Council, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Mohawk Nation against New York State may alter the landscape of both school districts, particularly with the Salmon River district, which has the highest Native American enrollment proportionately of any throughout New York State.

Previous members of the St. Regis Tribal Council have speculated that the Salmon River district could become the Akwesasne School District if the land it is located on were to be turned back over to Onkwehon:we control. The Salmon River district is also the most highly subsidized school district in New York State, by state tax-

payers. It is unclear what the costs to tribally operate the school district would be. The Massena Central School District might also be affected by a land claims settlement, due to a proposed tribal land swap with the Town of Brasher to relieve the Town of Massena from land claim impact, which originally derives from provisions of the 1796 Treaty between the United States and the Seven Nations of Canada, providing for a one mile square tract in Massena, as well as access to the Grasse River there.

Earlier in 2013, based in part on the journalism of native activists Matt Hill and John Kane, it was revealed that both school districts were owed significant amounts of tuition reimbursement

for service provision to Akwesasne residents,

by New York State. According to published reports, Massena Central was owed $800,000 and Salmon River was owed $3.4 million. Massena Central was originally owed $1.68 million in tuition costs, extending back to the 2011-2012 school years. Salmon River costs go back even further to the 2010-2011 school years. Over 200 students from Akwesasne attend the Massena Central schools, while over 500 students from Akwesasne attend the Salmon River district.

One of the factors affecting the state reimbursement to the school districts is due to the timing of the annual renewal of the contracts between tribal governments and

the school districts. The original Salmon River agreement with the tribe expired in 2010 and was just renewed in 2013, by Attorney Ahearn.

A litany of controversies involving the two school districts and the Akwesasne-based student bodies mark that recent relationship. The Salmon River district objected to the daily reading of the Thanksgiving Address by Onkwehon:we on the school intercom system which led to a lawsuit, while Massena Central has cut back on Native American staffing levels to assist in the special education service provision. Massena Central also at one time used a generic native mascot as the sporting team moniker, eventually changing the official im-

acts of violence, played the role of victims.

However, they made it clear they were here to take over this town.

Lakotas were not leaving at the end of the day, so riot police formed a walking line with the intent of pushing people out of the tiny town. The National Socialistic Movement, and Craig Cobb who bought up the land and was basking in media glory, went inside one of the little deteriorating houses with the police lined up outside to protect them.

Protesters appeared to leave with no police problems, and with some war cries.

School District to negotiate services contract with St. Regis

The Massena Central School District recently announced that the district has been authorized to retain legal counsel to renegotiate an agreement between the district and the neighboring federally-recognized St. Regis Tribe, pertaining to special education service provision for Native American students.

The efforts by both the Massena Central and Salmon River Central school districts to coordinate actions related to tribal contracts comes amidst a period of renewed communications between the executive branches of New York State government and the elected St. Regis Tribal Council. Land claim settlements in a

age of the Massena Red Raiders to one without a native symbol associated with their sports teams.

One reason cited by some Onkwehon:we to attend Massena Central over Salmon River is the presence of football as a varsity sport at Massena. Salmon River is well known as a state hockey team power player.

Some Akwesasne residents have expressed optimism that a varsity football program will be restored to the Salmon River district if and when the tribe assumes control of the district. “What a team that would be,” mused one longtime regional high school sports follower on that possibility, noting that Massena Central may lose out the most in that outcome.

Despite rain Tyendinaga fall fair a success

TYENDINAGA - The 113th Annual Tyendinaga Agricultural Fair took place this past weekend. Although heavy rains on Saturday brought early closures and reduced numbers, the Kanhiote Fundraising Bingo, a pancake breakfast, the Car Show and Shine, the poultry judging, a turkey dinner, and the Mohawk singers weathered the rain without a hitch.

On Friday night a cool breeze balanced out a slightly humid evening at the fairgrounds in Tyendinaga. The scrumptious smell of fry bread, thunderous sound of demolition cars revving, and lights so bright you forgot what time it was, are all synonymous with the Annual Tyendinaga Agricultural Fair. The sound of

laughter and people chattering away was heard as a constant hum of the crowd and the voice of “Elsie” – the 35 year veteran emcee for the very popular demolition derby – was heard through the sound system.

The fair is so popular among the small Tyendinaga community that the Quinte Mohawk Elementary (QMS) School and Tyendinaga Band Council closes their doors on the opening day of the fair.

QMS spends the day hanging up hundreds of pieces of student’s art for the art exhibit in the “school building”.

There were submissions of artwork and baking goods from the youth

that were judged by community members early Friday morning. Pat was very pleased with the number of submissions not only from Tyendinaga but also surrounding towns like Kingston and Shannonville. “We want to show that we want to work with the outside communities,” she said about why the exhibits were opened to the public.

Unfortunately, the rain continued and forced a shut down of the fair at 5:00 pm on Saturday.

Sunday was sunny and a cool 12 degree Celsius, perfect fair weather. The kids headed to the rides to make up for yesterday’s early closure. Maggie Deinum, owner of Crown Amusements, did the best she could to accommodate those who had been denied a full day of rides just

the day before.

The Kid’s Big Bale Roll and the Strongman/woman event were two activities that were held over from Saturday. The Petting Zoo, Bingo, and the Napanee Old Time Fiddlers entertained the rest of the fair goers throughout the rest of the day.

Nikki Auten member of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and long time fair goer had this to say about why she has always attended the fair for as long as she can remember, “The biggest reason for me to come to the fair is so I can see all of the people in my community in one place.

Waterloo based coalition rallies against Enbridge tar sands pipeline

By Rachel Avery and Dan Kellar KITCHENER - As Waterloo regional councillors arrived for their monthly general meeting this past Wednesday, they were greeted by a rally of approximately 75 residents demonstrating their opposition to Enbridge’s plan to reverse and pump tar sands bitumen through the aging Line 9 pipeline.

In the council meeting, the Waterloo Region Against Line 9 Coalition, representing over 25 different local groups, presented a declaration of opposition to Enbridge’s project and urged others in the region to join them in voicing their concerns.

Speakers at the rally and in the council meeting emphasized local concerns about the pipeline project, citing the risks posed by bitumen to the Grand River watershed, and highlighting the treaty agreements violated by Enbridge and the federal government in their failure to meaningfully consult Indigenous communities along the route of the pipeline.

“Neither the federal

nor provincial governments have shown this pipeline reversal plan to be safe,” noted coalition spokesperson Kalin Stacey, continuing, “and with Enbridge’s dismal safety record and penchant for dumping clean-up costs on local governments, we believe the Line 9 reversal endangers Waterloo Region, located on Six Nations land, and all communities along and downstream of the line.” As the delegation noted in their presentation, Enbridge has recently failed to compensate affected parties, notably two tribal councils, for costs incurred in response to a pipeline spill in Michigan.

Some of these concerns were echoed by Councillor Rob Deutschmann, who in the meeting expressed reservations over the strain placed on local responders in cases of pipeline failures, saying, “we certainly don’t want to be left with a mess.” Deutschmann also highlighted the large scope of a potential spill on Line 9, pointing out that this “could have impact on water supply and our friends south of us in Brantford

who rely on that water supply.”

Deutschmann is mayor of North Dumfries, where Line 9 crosses the region. While Deutschmann made this link, neither he nor any of the other councillors acknowledged the potential impact on Six Nations or engaged with the coalition’s urging of the Region to take up treaty responsibilities as a government of the Canadian state on Six Nations territory.

Enbridge’s own data records over 800 significant spills in the past decade. Line 9 itself has suffered a dozen spills in its

operational history. One of the primary concerns voiced by many groups is the impact of diluted bitumen (“dilbit”) on the environment. Bitumen is much thicker than conventional crude, which requires that it be mixed with a chemical slurry and pumped under much higher pressure to transport it through pipelines. It is suspected of being particularly corrosive, adding to the stress placed on aging pipelines not designed to transport it.

And to add to these risks, when dilbit spills into water, it sinks, proving almost impossible to

clean up, as seen in Kalamazoo, MI when Enbridge’s line 6b ruptured in 2010.

This breach, which caused the largest inland oil spill in North America, has yet to be fully cleaned up despite expenditures of over a billion dollars. “If Line 9 spilled into the Grand River or the Nith River, given what we know from Kalamazoo, our entire watershed would be devastated,” said Stacey. “And Enbridge’s track record of spills suggests that it isn’t a matter of if this will happen, but when.”

Enbridge’s proposal involves the reversal of

the Line 9, a 38-year-old pipeline which extends from Sarnia to Montreal, in order for it to ship oil west to east, and to allow for the flow of diluted bitumen (dilbit) from the Alberta tar sands. The flow reversal has already been approved between Sarnia and North Westover (near Hamilton), but the reversal of the section between North Westover and Montreal, as well as the transport of dilbit, has yet to be approved. The NEB will be holding hearings in October in Montreal and Toronto where those groups who were given permission to participate will present their opinions on the project.

Next up for the coalition is a rally and presentation at the Grand River Conservation Authority on September 27. “We’re encouraging people from all along the Grand River to join us at the GRCA and demand they take their role in conserving the watershed seriously.” To get on the bus to the GRCA this Friday, e-mail waterlooregionagainstline9@ gmail.com.

Playing in the sand draws large crowds NIAGARA FALLS - A choir from Six Nations directed by Robin Maracle and known as Dwae Na Ga Das performed recently in Niagara Falls at the dedications of the new Niagara Falls Sand and Sculpture Exhibition.

Sculptors turned their talent to a little used medium, sand, to create some amazingly intricate structures.

The exhibition is not only a grand spectacle, but also an educational event for a wide array of visitors.

The sculptors were asked to depict important people of the War of 1812 and they produced finely detailed figures of Tecumseh, Maj, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Michael de Salsberry, Canadian heroine Laura Secord, and many others.

The event took place at the Memorial Arena and covered 16,000 square feet (1,487 sq. meters),

bringing 17 of the greatest sculpting masters from throughout Canada, the USA, Russia and Europe.

About 6,622,517 pounds of sand were dumped on site for the artists to use. Some works stood 22 feet tall, which was the maximum allowable height.

The choir was pleased to perform a song in Tuscarora, Mohawk and Cayuga before local politicians and dignitaries. Other Six Nations representatives at the event included Elected Chief William Montour, Councillors Bob Johnson Ava Hill and Helen Miller.

Confederacy secretary Leroy “Jock” Hill was on hand to do the opening Ganohonyo’k.

Mush Hole – leave it or demolish it?

The time has come to make a decision regarding the future of the former Mohawk Institute building. Repairs are desperately needed which could cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars to complete. Since the “Mush Hole” closed on 1971, some former students have called for all memory of their horror to be erased by tearing down the old school.

But for others, the school stands as a monument to racism and genocide in Canada, and therefore should remain standing or maybe even turned into a residential school museum like the Holocaust Museum in Israel.

It is time to let your voice be heard on the matter. The Woodland Cultural Centre is asking for help in

determining the fate of the Mohawk school, which was built in 1904. Community input can be registered at the Six Nations Tourism Assembly Room beginning Tuesday, Sept 24 and again on Thursday September 26, from 6 pm until 9 pm.

Then again of Saturday Sept. 26 at the GREAT Opportunity Centre, Room 103 from 10 am until 2 pm.

Should the former Mush Hole building stand or should it be torn down? It’s your call.

Two Row Times Glossary

We want this publication to be read by a broad audience and we know that some of the language we use may not be commonly understood by everyone. So we wanted to provide this glossary to define terms that we frequently use.

Onkwehon:we (Ohgway-ho-way) – Original people or complete person. It could be used interchangeably with the Algonquin word Anishnaabeg. An indigenous word for “Indian” does not exist but this could be considered the most accurate replacement.

Haudenosaunee (Hohden-oh-show-nee) – people of the longhouse also known as League of Five Nations, Six Nations Confederacy or Iroquois.

Politically similar to the modern United Nations, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca nations unified in purpose while maintaining autonomy and diversity. The Tuscarora nation was added to the council in 1720.

Wampum Belts – Channelled whelk and Quahog shells crafted into beads used for important political purposes

among the Haudenosaunee and other eastern woodland nations.

Because the oral traditions and histories of indigenous peoples were so important these belts embodied a living agreement and served as a memory device for successive generations to interpret.

Two Row Wampum Belt, 1677 – the relationship agreement or “Prime Treaty” of North America between sovereign nations of the Haudenosaunee and the British.

A belt of white wampum symbolizes the peaceful path or river of life and two parallel rows of purple wampum represent non-interference between Haudenosaunee and British vessels.

Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt – The dish or bowl metaphor was used to describe the agreement amongst

indigenous groups who peacefully shared the hunting resources of the Great Lakes region. The general concept of the bowl can also be applied to represent the entire continent.

Turtle Island – the land of North America but it has also been interpreted to represent the entire earth.

Kanien’kehá:ka (Gunyee-gay-haw-gah)– literally translated “People of the place of the flint” and is the proper name for the Mohawk people. Mohawk could be a transliteration of the derogatory term “Mohowawogs” which means flesh eaters or perhaps cannibals.

Gayogohó:no’ (Guy-yohgo-oh-no) – literally, people of the great swamp but is the proper name for the Cayuga people.

Under pressure: Alberta to conduct hearings into Peace River pollution

By Steve Da Silva After much delay, the Alberta government has finally buckled to public pressure to conduct public hearings into the pollution of the Peace River region, with the Alberta Energy Regulator announcing on Sep. 18 that it would hold hearings into the “odours and emissions associated with heavy oil operations in the Peace River area.”

The northern Alberta region is being polluted with oils sands projects which has

forced the eviction of families, sickened animals, and lowered property values. Many families have left the region, reporting unusual headaches, nausea, rashes, memory losses and other symptoms.

The steaming of bitumen in the region is reported to cause a chemical reaction known as ‘aquathermosis’ that releases a potent neurotoxin, hydrogen sulfide. The regulator has received 860 complaints from the region since 2010.

The region is the ancestral home to Na-Dene peoples.

Vancouver’s ‘Walk for Reconciliation’ for residential schools attracts tens of thousands

By Steve Da Silva On Sunday, September 22, tens of thousands of people braved the pouring rain in Vancouver on a “Walk for Reconciliation” to mark a week of hearings at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that has been hearing from survivors of Canada’s notorious residential school system.

The City of Vancouver earlier this year proclaimed 2013 the year of reconciliation. In a province where land was never ceded by Onkwehon:we people,

and where 53 First Nations bodies are in the process of working out some 42 separate comprehensive land claims agreements with federal and provincial governments, it’s clear why various levels of government must at least appear to be concerned with reconciliation.

However, this “reconciliation” process is also proceeding at a time when the Vancouver police have stepped up their targeting and criminalization of Onkwehon:we and other poor people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, as Two Row Times has also reported this week.

Six Nations draws Aces at Nations Cup

Six Nations lacrosse fans were treated to a great Iroquois Nations Cup tournament series played at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations this past weekend involving eight teams from throughout Iroquoia.

In the end, the Ohsweken Aces won the 2013 Iroquois Nations Cup gold again this year in an exciting and tightly battled 11-10 win over the Silver Medalists, the Kahnawake Rapids on Sunday afternoon.

The bronze medal game played earlier in the afternoon was also a nail bitter between the Native Sons (a team of friends and family from throughout Haudenosaunee territory) and the host Frog Pond Maulers, which saw the Maulers squeak out a 12-11 win from a game that could easily have gone either way.

It was the climax of a weekend that brought Haudenosaunee teams together, all vying to dethrone the incumbent Cup holders, the Aces.

Both medal games were excitement packed, one-goal affairs with narrow leads flip-flopping back and forth.

The Aces and the Rapids were both fast on the transition and carried a roster of highly talented players.

They seesawed their way through the first period, trading goals until the Aces took the last marker of the period to lead, 5-4.

(Photo by Jim Windle) The Aces turned it up a notch in the second and the game appeared to be all but over after the Aces exploded for 8 goals while Jake Henhawk, in the Aces goal, kept all but two Kahnawakke shots out of his net.

It was 11-6 with 20 minutes left and the Rapids looked defeated. But in the third, the Aces seemed to think it was in the bag already and stopped pressing Kahnawake.

Methodically, the Rapids began chipping away at the Ohsweken lead to draw to within one goal of sending the game into OT, with 1:51 remaining in regulation time. Kahn-

nawake had the Aces on their heals but the clock became their biggest opponent.

A missed pass in the offensive zone resulted in a turn over with seconds remaining, which the Aces ran down to ride the narrow lead to the end.

Craig Point led the Aces with 5 goals and 3 assists for an 8-point game and the nod as the Championship game’s team MVP. Donovan Fleischer won the honours for Kahnawake. Rapids’ Jeff Shatler was the tournaments’ top point getter with 6 goals and 9 assists.

“That was good,” said Aces veteran Tim Bomberry. “We had a good lead but … they (Kahnawake) gave a good team.”

Bomberry has been a part of every one of the seven Six Nations Iroquois Cup wins they have played in except for last season.

“Little Bob (Henry) and I thought we were going to retire that year,” he laughs. “That might be it though. Maybe this year,

we’ll see.”

Cory Bomberry was also one of the founding members of the Aces, and recognizes the Iroquois Nations Cup as a celebration of lacrosse, friends, and family.

“For the Aces, it’s our boys getting together.

We’ve won it for the last five years now. It’s always a good time to get together,” he said.

“We started this team as family,” said Bomberry.

“We’re all related somewhere. We’ve had some pretty good times, so we’ll keep it going. In fact everyone here is here because of our friendships, so it’s a good thing.”

And it never gets old for him either.

“This year wasn’t as easy as perhaps other years,” he said. “ But we had to battle, and lacrosse is about the battle. You can’t just go out and expect to win. All the teams put on a good show for everybody and we came through with another championship.”

Goalie Donovan Fliesher and Brandon Francis chipped in with single assists in their disappointing loss.

The Bronze Medal Game between the Six Nations Native Sons and the Frog Pond Maulers turned out to be every bit as exciting as the Gold and Silver Medal Game.

After spotting the Maulers five unanswered goals, early in the first period, the Sons began to shine scoring three times to cut the Maulers lead to 5-3 after the first period.

In the second period the Native Sons brought their A game. Angus LaBogrne threaded the needle with an outside shot through traffic and followed that up with another scored 25 seconds later. Peter Rivera and Tyler Seneca assisted to

even the game at 5-5.

Each team traded two more goals before the period ended tied 7-7. Cam Seneca and Rivera scored for the Native Sons while Haodais Maracle and Quinn Powless accounted for the Maulers second period goals.

The third period had fans on the edge of their seats as the teams continued to trade goal for goal.

Kim Squire used a screen in front of the Son’s goal and found a spot just inside the far post, but seconds later Brandon Brooks recreated just about the same goal at the other end to even things again.

Johnny Powless unleashed a rocket at 4:57 to put the Maulers in front again. And with Seneca in the box for slashing at 8:02, Squire sent a hard one at Tyler Seneca in the Son’s net which he got almost all of, but not enough, and the ball slowly rolled over the line and stopped an inch or two

inside the net to put a two goal edge between them.

The turning point of the game came shortly thereafter when Seneca made a similar save but this time quickly turned and swept the ball away before it could enter the net. That would have made it 11-8 and may have demoralized his team somewhat.

But knowing they had just dodged a bullet, the Native Sons began to pour it on. Johnny Jimerson and Joe Montour scored two quick ones for the Sons and they were all even again at 10-10.

With 6:43 remaining, Ian Martin picked up a rebound and once again put the Maulers on top, 11-10.

Cody Johnson scored what would be the game winner at 14:31 from Ian Martin and Josh Johnson to make it 12-10, but there was still a lot of lacrosse yet to play.

move the trophy from the Six Nations’ mantle and take it home with them.

Corvairs outscore opponents 16-6 in weekend wins

By Jim Windle CALEDONIA The Caledonia Corvairs kept their perfect season intact Sunday evening with a 4-1 win over the Jr. B Canadians in Welland.

The Corvairs are now riding the crest of the 27 team OHA Jr. B wave with a 6-0 record heading into this week’s games.

After demolishing the expansion Buffalo Regals 12-2 Saturday night at the Haldimand Centre Arena in Caledonia, the Corvairs found it a little tougher in Welland but still came out with a 4-1 victory.

Captain Matt Quilty led the scoring with a hat trick.

Welland’s Matthew Mateljan gave the Canadians a 1-0 lead at 3:02 but Caledonia could not break through on Welland goalie Liam Conway until Matt Quilty finally put one behind him to end the first period tied at 1-1 despite Welland being out shot 15-4. Todd Ratchford and Brooker Muir assisted.

Muir netted a goal at 4:48 of the third from Connor Murphy before Quilty closed the show with his third goal scored at 17:24.

Muir earned the assist, to give him a 4-point night contributing to all of Caledonia’s goals.

The Corvairs ended up out shooting the Canadians 43-20.

There was a massa-

cre the night before, at the Haldimand Centre Arena, as the on fire Corvairs hosted the expansion, Buffalo Regals.

As bad as the 12-2 score appears, it could easily have been a lot worse. The Corvairs faced only token resistance from the Regals’ on their way to a 7-0 first period lead, three of them on consecutive short handed situations.

Adding goals to their stats sheet were Cosimo Fontana, who started the avalanche 50 seconds after the opening face-off,

from Muir and Quilty.

Todd Ratchford made it 2-0, 25 seconds later from Muir and Murphy.

Connor Patton got into the feeding frenzy with a short-hander at 3:24, from Murphy and Spencer Gourlay. Twenty seconds later it was a 4-0 game as Murphy delivered another shorthander on the same Caledonia penalty, at 7:55, assisted by Gourlay and Justin Abraham. Patton and Mitch Brown ended the first installment at 7-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The Regals looked dejected and out-classed but kept trying to stop the Caledonia tide in the second period, with limited results.

Jeffrey Marlotte, Fontana, Muir and Steven Comegna buit up an 11-0 mountain heading into the third. After Ratchford mad4eit an even dozen, the Corvairs seemed to take a little mercy on the Buffalo team by coasting the rest of the way and got caught sleeping twice before the clock ran down Furlong recorded 8 minutes in the affair stopping three shots before

Naniamo News runs blatantly racist article On September 22, 2013 thousands of people in Vancouver took part in a reconciliation walk to support the victims of residential schools, it was an emotional time of healing and even Dr. Martin Luther King’s daughter gave a moving speech. It seems all is well in Canada. The next day the Naniamo Daily News published a scathing article by Bill Ritchie condemning native people for living in the past and then attempted to soothe the Canadian conscience by claiming these perceived

injustices are irrelevant because times were different in the 17th and 18th century; that they occurred before the concept of human rights had been invented. The article “No groups in Canada should get special status” has been removed from the website and an apology has been issued by Editor Hugh Nicholson. This is the second article by Nanaimo Daily News that has been condemned by indigenous nations (“groups” lol) as overtly racist and colonialist.

Social media supports local aspiring model Six Nations Facebookers are rallying behind Jessica Harris of the Cayuga Turtle clan this week as she competes for a national garage.ca model search.

Jessica is daughter of Candy Harris and granddaughter of the late Barb and Phillip Harris. “We tried sending her to model in Toronto but couldn’t afford it” says her mother Candy who was happy with the feedback she has been getting from the community. Jessica is on the “popular” page of the contest of which there are over 900 paricipants.

By Nahnda Garlow ONONDAGA NY - From the time he was a child, Tracy Thomas knew he was gifted. Despite being born with a congenital hand difference, he has become an accomplished artist, illustrator and woodcarver known across the territory.

An art teacher encouraged Thomas to pursue art in high school, placing him in advanced classes along the way. This gave Thomas the opportunity to develop what he feels is his purpose in life. “I believe that the Creator has given every one of us a gift, and that somehow later on in life it is our responsibility to develop that gift. It doesn’t matter what it is; music, art, singing, dancing, you name it!

Some people have a couple talents. Even though I was born without fingers on my hands, that didn’t hinder me from doing any art.”

Thomas was born with two partial fingers on his left hand and none on the right. For a time he tried wearing a hook. “I didn’t like it. It was in my way, and I thought that if i ever got mad at somebody I might hit them with it and hurt them. I was so used to doing things on my own and adapting, that the hook became an inconvenience to me.”

At Syracuse Univeristy, Thomas studied art and learned he excelled at pointilism art. “I put both of my hands together.

I’m very patient and very steady.” he shares. His determination and a love for detail helped him master loom beadwork as well.

This summer Thomas was given the opportunity to decorate the wood dugout canoe used in the Two Row Renewal Campaign.

He used a combination of carving and wood burning.

“I had to do it differently because most people are using a hammer and chisel.

I use an old Indian trick: a Dremmel!” Through this electric drill, Thomas uses pointillism with small strokes and his detailed carvings are becoming popular collector’s items among fans of Indigenous art. He also created a commemorat ive painting of the Two Row Renewal campaign, earning him the blue ribbon at the State Fair earlier this month.

This coming weekend, Thomas will gather with

thousands expected at the Skanonh Centre-Great Law of Peace Centre in Liverpool, NY at Onondaga Lake for the Haudenosaune Wooden Lacrosse Stick Expo ’13. The two day event features exhibition games, wooden lacrosse stick making demos, and lacrosse clinics with the Iroquois Nationals. There is also the promise of good food, craft vendors and Haudenosaune social dancing. Thomas is the Arts & Culture Co-ordinator for the craft market part of this event.

Music Review: Derek Miller - Blues Vol. 1

Derek Miller likes fast cars, fast tunes and who knows what else. For his 4th disc in a strong lineup of award winners, (Music is the Medicine 2002, The Dirty Looks 2006, Double Trouble 2010) Derek Miller released Blues Vol. 1 this year, which won Best Blues Album at the 8th annual Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in Winnipeg.

Derek takes a break from song writing on this album to pay homage to the Blues greats, and some of his favorite musicians overall. He has hand-picked legendary tracks to cover such as Boom, Boom, Boom by

John Lee Hooker, Hidden Charms by Howl’n Wolf and recorded by Willie Dixon.

Subsequently, Miller joins a rich list of others who have recorded this song such as Can-Con icon Colin James, Elvis Costello and Derek’s muse and musical inspiration Link Wray and the Raymen.

Have no fear Blues purists.

Miller does nothing to these classic tracks that you will not like. Rather than regurgitate a song that’s been learned and rehearsed, Miller owns his renditions. We hear it and feel it as the album progresses. There is nothing inauthentic here.

Derek is simply taking the inherent blood and

blues breath inside him to record, for the record, a set of great blues songs for a new generation.

John Lennon in Mohawk

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – Although the Beatles are certainly not Mohawk, there is someone who believes Lennon just may have been.

Karonhyawake aka Jeff Doreen – is originally from Tyendinaga but is now living in Hamilton and teaching the Mohawk language at Six Nations.

He is also a singer/ songwriter as well as an avid Beatles fan, and has been translating Beatles songs, mostly John Lennon tunes, into the Mohawk language.

He has found the flow of Lennon’s melodies and thoughts is a good mix with the Mohawk language and culture.

“I’ve been playing Beatle music all my life,” he says. “I started playing guitar when I was about 11, and my dad and uncles taught me the basic guitar chords of bluegrass music.

But I really liked the Beatles and when I became fluent in the Mohawk language I thought, why not put them together.”

Karonhyawake performed some of his Mohawk-Beatle songs during the Iroquois Cup tournament at the ILA this past weekend. The Two Row Times caught up with him

Karonhyawake (aka Jeff Doreen) after his set, which he performed from the press booth located above the player’s benches.

“I like the way John Lennon thought,” he says.

“His message resonates with Peace, Power and a Good Mind. Translating his thoughts into Mohawk seems to work really well.”

His Mohawk Beatles tunes have opened up invitations to perform at a number of Haudenosaunee communities as a solo act, but once he completes translation of a few more songs, he is planning a 12-song album of translated Beatles songs like Across the Universe, Hey Jude, Blackbird, and more. He is targeting next summer for that.

He was inspired to translate popular songs into Mohawk by Teddy Peters from Akwesasne

who recorded a number of Johnny Cash songs in Mohawk on a CD called Teddy and Eddy.

“It was really cool to hear the language being used like that,” says Karonhyawake.”

By day, Karonhyawake teaches Mohawk which he began doing at Hagersville High School in 2008 and has been teaching through the Hamilton School Board since 2009.

This year he took a leave of absence from the board to come to Six Nations and teach at the Mohawk Adult Immersion Program, Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa, under Executive Director Owennatekha.

He surprised himself at how readily some Beatles lyrics and melodies translate to the Mohawk language.

“I was driving around one day trying to translate Hey Jude, and the Mohawk words just seemed to start coming out of me,” he recalls. “I had nowhere to write it down to I just went over it and over it hoping I’d remember” Check out some of Karonhyawake’s Mohawk Beatles songs on the Two Row Times YouTube channel.

Other Six Nations musicians credit the Ongweoweh people themselves having influence over “Blackbased” blues stating the traditional shuffle beat in our social dance songs is the root of the blues rhythm.

Regardless, there is no argument that Six Nations blues musicians encompass the very spirit of Blues music and Derek Miller creates fresh Blues from its origins. Miller never dilutes or hyphenates his music and this move has proven to be the recipe that makes the girls skirts shake and invites the shiest of gentlemen to join the dance floor. Sadly, Miller hasn’t yet worked

these new takes on the old classics into his live sets yet, and when asked if we can expect a Blues Volume 2 anytime soon, he replied “We’re not sure yet”. Thankfully in the meantime, Blues Vol. 1 is available on itunes and through his website derekmiller.ca.

Classifieds Giant Firewood for Free If anyone from Six Nations has a loader and dump truck and wants to come pick up huge chunks of wood to burn, I work at a firewood making place and there is about three or four dump truck loads worth of left over wood available for any one who can get it out of the site. Some of the pieces of wood weigh 1000 pounds, hence the need for the loader. All the wood is too big for us to use, which means that it can’t be cut with a two foot chain saw so it’s more than 4 feet in diameter.
