Experts educate community

OHSWEKEN – In what is the third segment of informational meetings regarding the drug fentanyl, community members were invited to the Six Nations Community Hall to listen in as several speakers spoke about the drugs effects on individuals and families.

The meeting hosted special Guest Speaker Detective Constable Chris Auger, who spoke on the trends in diversion and abuse. But one of the highlights of information to be offered was by Ganeyohs Head Nurse Deb Jonathan who spoke about the Patch Program and the Noloxone Program within the Six Nations community.

“People that are addicted will go to any measure to get the next [dose],” said Jonathan.

“People who receive fentanyl patches from a licensed pharmacy are required to return all used patches, prior to receiving a refill on their prescription.”

This type of program

forces fentanyl users to be accountable for their own patches to help prevent the patches from ending up in a place like a garbage can where they can be scavenged by other users. The pharmacy also takes into account whether or not the patches are returned dam-

aged or are “lost” as well.

But the Noloxone Program is focused on helping in the case of an overdose situation.

“Noloxone counteracts the effects of narcotics,” she said. “What happens when you overdoes is your [brain's] receptor sites become covered with the narcotic. When the noloxone or Nar Can is injected into a person that's the antidote for it. It goes to the brain, it kicks off the narcotic and it lands in that receptor so that it revives the person.”

However, the noloxone is a short-lived antidote and emergency services must be called after it is administered to the affected individual. For more information on fentanyl visit FENTANYLCANKILL.ca.

Remembering Timbuck with golf

By Jayson Koblun SIX NATIONS – Timbuck Martin was a man who loved his family and loved the game of golf.

That’s why more than one year after his passing, his wife Sue and his family and friends decided to carry out his dream of hosting a golf tournament this June to raise money and awareness for families dealing with the unexpected costs of undergoing an organ transplant.

“Timbuck was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in 2011 and was given five years to live if he didn’t receive a double lung transplant,” said Sue. “He ended up having the transplant in 2014, after only being on the wait list for maybe seven weeks.”

IPF is a type of lung disease that results in scarring of the lungs for an unknown reason. Over time, the scarring gets worst and it becomes hard to take in a deep breath and the lungs cannot take in enough oxygen. As thrilled as the Martins were for the operation, there was a lot of unexpected costs incurred that had an impact on the family.

“The person undergoing an operation like this one has to have a support person with them the entire time they’re at the hospital recovering, in case they are unable to answer a question, sign a document, or make a tough decision,” said Sue. “And it’s not like hospitals have free hotels, or places where the support person can live temporarily.

So, paying for food, travel back and forth, hotels and more really adds up during an extended recovery period.”

Sue said that Six Nations Health Services helped a lot with some of the costs, but despite their help it still wasn’t enough to leave the family unscathed. “Six Nations Health Services offered a lot of emotional support as well as financial support. They were fantastic.

A lot of people in the community don’t know that there are places in the community to help them out in times like this,” said

Timbuck had many jobs throughout their more than 30 years of marriage and Sue owned her own business as well to care for their four children; Colin, Shani, Brandon and James. Timbuck, also known as Jim, inherited the nickname Timbuck from his grandfather years earlier. He is from Six Nations and over the years was a truck driver, licensed security guard, electrical contractor and even served eight years in the army as a staff sergeant. Sue was Timbuck’s support person and having to put her business on hold while Timbuck recovered, and having to travel to Hamilton and Toronto for three years took its toll on the family financially.

“He was the main breadwinner in the family, so when he and I both stopped bringing in an income and he saw how hard things were getting — that’s when he decided he really wanted to help others who may be in our same situation.”

Throughout the entire process, Sue and Timbuck really felt encouraged,

supported and loved by all the family members, cousins, friends, grandchildren and his sisters — Spanky, Sandi, Clyde and Tina. Before Timbuck had the lung transplant his cousins hosted a spaghetti fundraising dinner to help offset some of the costs.

“A lot of people really supported us and we appreciated it so much,” said Sue. Timbuck was transferred from Toronto General Hospital to St. Johns Rehab Hospital in Toronto. There he met a patient in physio who was a fundraising co-ordinator with a lot of experience and had great ideas on how to raise money and find sponsors.

“He was really thinking big,” said Sue. “But we both knew that we should start off relatively small in our first year — I suggested that we put on a golf tournament and he thought that was a great idea.”

Playing golf was one of Timbuck’s favourite things to do, and he was good at it. He and his friends would go to Myrtle Beach to golf every year for almost 25 years.

“He was really wellknown in the community, talked to everyone, teased a lot of people — that was a big thing with him, being a jokester,” said Sue. “He got along with everybody and he knew a lot of people through his business, and my business too.

When my customers came in to see me, most of the time they would end up sitting on the deck visiting with Timbuck.”

When Timbuck was released from the hospital in February, 2015, he underwent a fairly strict physiotherapy and recovery plan. But it didn’t take too long before he was back on the green hitting around a golf ball with his friends.

“He was determined to be back on the golf course as soon as the golf course opened — and he was,” said Sue. “Our plan was to spend the rest of the summer planning and organizing the tournament and finding sponsors, then we would host the tournament in summer 2016.”

Things were starting to look really promising for the family. Timbuck was out of the wheelchair, breathing better, and not even needing crutches.

Things took a turn for the worse on December 8, 2015, when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of cancer. Two weeks later on December 22, Timbuck passed away.

“It happened so fast,” said Sue. “The entire family was rocked because up until then everything was going to well. The cancer came out of nowhere.”

Sue and her friends had still planned on hosting the golf tournament in summer 2016 in honour of Timbuck, but it felt too fresh to be able to pull it off so quickly without Timbuck there.

“We planned to still do the fundraiser last year, but it was better to hold off because I got sick and everything had happened so fast,” said Sue. “Now we’ve had another year to plan and we’re ready to honour one of Timbuck’s last wishes.”

The tournament is set for Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Greens at Renton.

“There is a whole team of people who have been involved in setting up, planning, and organizing this tournament. Timbuck would be so happy,” said Sue.

By Jonathan Garlow OHSWEKEN – If you went to J.C. Hill school on Six Nations before 1997 you may remember taking shop or home classes and receiving basic education for careers in trade or service.

The Province of Ontario stopped funding home and tech in the ‘90s and since then Six Nations students stopped receiving special instruction on how to work with their hands.

Phillip W. Skye, Herb Hess and Morgan Green believe that the lack of extra care for Six Nations children leads to increased vulnerability to suicide and are taking the steps necessary to implement improvements.

"We can make this happen. We have a viable, hands on project called 7th GEN that we can take ownership as a community and in 150 years no one will be able to remember what suicide even was," says Phillip W. Skye. "Every child on Six Nations has a purpose, they can learn skills here on Six Nations that can take them anywhere in the world."

men are Six Nations community members. Hess has worked in the school system at Six Nations for more than 15 years and he believes in the 7th GEN Education Project as well. "What about the children who have trouble with sports or can't make straight As?” Hess asked.

Ken Robinson, a writer and PhD has a TED Talk online called “Do Schools Kill Creativity” that has been viewed more than 40 million times. Ken speaks about home and shop classes saying, “Students who’ve been slumbering through school wake up. Those who thought they weren’t smart find that they are.

Those who feared they couldn’t achieve anything discover they can.

In the process, they build

a stronger sense of purpose and self-respect.

Kids who thought they had no chance of going to college find that they do.

Those who don’t want to go to college find there are other routes in life that are just as rewarding.”

Green couldn’t agree more. " 7th GEN is something for the kids to actually come out and learn to use their hands to do stuff. We'll teach them how to use a skillsaw or cook a chicken," says Green. "We want to bring back hope."

They are still in planning stages and are looking for funding options.

OPINION Woodtick awareness EDITORIAL BY JONATHAN GARLOW Anyone who has spent a decent amount of time on Six Nations has been bit by a wood tick. It’s inevitable.

The wood ticks live in the long grass and the trees.

Some say they have sensitive antennae and jump from trees when they detect blood. Wood ticks are parasites.

Although I am an editor of a distinguished publication, I admit that I have been attacked by at least 200 wood ticks in my lifetime, maybe even 1,000 but that number seems so high I lowered it.

Don’t be ashamed if you’ve been bit, it’s not your fault.

We unilaterally kill wood ticks, across the board, no exceptions. There have been intense discussions over tables at Six Nations on how to properly deal with these pests. We took the time to conduct a quick survey and it seems there are some culturally appropriate ways: – Flushing ticks down the toilet may be the most compassionate way go. The tick may or may not die when it goes down the drain it goes into the hands of fate. This is a very popular method but sometimes you are not around toiletry when the tick is found.

– Burning a wood tick with a lighter is also a good one. Many people from the northern areas of Six Nations believe in this method, reports say. If you do try this, listen for the pop sound to know the execution totally worked.

– If you have fingernails it is possible to actually tear a wood tick completely in half like a ketchup packet.

– This isn’t going to go over well with PETA but the TRT has verified that some Six Nations residents believe in pulling off the legs of the tick and leaving it alone. Ouchie!

It’s important to remember that the goal is to prevent the tick from biting anyone else — and sometimes a tick has to die in that defensive process. A second person should never be bitten by a tick that was recently found by another human being – it is irresponsible to let a tick go.

One person surveyed did admit they threw ticks “out the front door” which only leads to chances of a second bite.

If we look to nature it is the responsibility of the possum to eat the parasites that threaten us.

According to Canadian agencies the proper way to deal with wood ticks is to seal them in a Ziplock bag in case of Lyme disease. Isn’t Lyme disease from the mysterious deer tick, the smaller cousin to the woody? What does Canada know about wood ticks anyway.

Does anyone know what morels are?

It is said when our grandfathers, the Thunders, are first heard in the spring, they are awakening all things here on earth from the cold winter months.

That is when all nature's vegetation and plant life start to flourish, and also when my family would start to look for a very particular fungus every year.

I remember my grandma Dollie would say, "let's go look for the (oh-nah-gah-lount-dah)", which is how you say morels in Mohawk.

We would all grab a bag, and then the hunt was on. They were only out for a few weeks. We would all walk around in the bush, usually about the same time as asparagus comes out, checking the spots where we knew they grew.

There are all different sizes; anywhere from one to four inches long. Mind you, I did come across some that where beyond five inches — but not too often. Along with the different sizes, morels come in different colours and shades.

There is plain brown, light brown, dark brown, white brown, and dark dark brown. So dark in fact that they have a tinge of black in them. They are often called the “black ones” and are the first ones to come out when the temperature drops at night and the coldness of the air gives them a black tinge.

The old people use to say that when you find one to take note of which way it is pointing. The way it is pointing tells you there’s more in that direction and you have to be very quiet when looking for them. If the morels hear you, they will go back in the ground until they think the coast is clear and come back out. That's why when

a person ends up finding one where you had already been looking, they shout out, "I found one over here", then the other person would say, "Heck I was just over there".

Years ago the old people all knew what (oh-nah-gah-lountdah) were, and their eyes would light up when we would get home with a grocery bag full of them and give them some as a gift to enjoy eating.

Belonging to the mushroom family, you cut them in halves the long way and can either fry them in butter as most people do or, make a soup that is sorta like cream of mushroom. But, if you ask me they taste better then mushrooms – as would anyone who tries them would also agree.

I still go look for them today along with some of my aunts and uncles, but it seems they don't grow like how they used to. Before when we would find one there would be like five or six more growing just a few inches apart – now it's like you find one or two and that's it!

Either way, just the fact of finding a couple takes me back to memories of my grandma Dollie and all the old people who have since past, and it compels me to once again go on the hunt for the (oh-nah-gah-lount-dah).

I gave thanks to all those who were around who spoke Mohawk first and English second and taught me a great amount of things the way it used to be in the days of old.

Ten of the greatest lies Cultural appropriation in history: Part one feature column: rachel a. snow

This topic is surfacing again with Canadian mainstream media. A recent issue of Write published an editorial by Hal Niedzviecki where he states that he “does not believe in cultural appropriation”.

In this celebratory year of Canada 150, Niedzviecki’s editorial shows that white privilege does not understand the cultural distinctiveness of Indigenous voices.

From the earliest beginnings, settlers ventured not to a “new land” but to a fully functioning island with societies that had developed complex harmonious systems that were fully sustainable. The first colonizers were unable to see this truth because they looked with the lens of European influenced individuals. They saw land as conquerable, women as property and resources as undeveloped. They failed to see the harmony, the strength of Indigenous women and the limited use of resources by all inhabitants of this island.

Fast forward five hundred plus years later, and the view is remarkably

unchanged.

Why is it that the oppressor society feels their way of knowing, supersedes that of the original peoples?

In this editorial, Niedzviecki clearly wanted to have not a debate but a massacre of Indigenous authors. This article challenges Canadian mainstream writers to write in the area of indigenous experience. Hasn’t this already been happening?

One prime example of cultural appropriation was seen in Joseph Boyden’s work. Boyden’s unwillingness to definitively name his tribe, people or protocol in writing material, (very similar to already published material) has left the non-Indigenous writers angry and ready to have this continued “debate”.

It seems impossible for the settler colonizer to accept that a culture rich in thought, expression and artistry has emerged with spirituality and protocol to guide the Indigenous.

The spirits that are in every Indigenous people have followed ancestral flows from their earliest creation stories to the

current time. It is a line of thought embedded in another dimension that beats like a drum reverberating through the centuries.

Can a person, or society without this understanding mimic the expression of the Indigenous writers, poets, artists and composers?

Indigenous people have responded to Niedzviecki’s work with incredulity. He called out to Indigenous artists to contribute their work, and then lead off their contributions with this disclaimer. It was betrayal.

Worse, Canadian media rallied quickly around Niedzviecki posting publicly on twitter donations to go to an “appropriation prize” pot. While there have been apologies, retractions and resignations since, the issue remains why did this elite group of media feel that belittling Indigenous authors and taking up their space was laughable?

Is it because Canada is built on the appropriation of land from all six hundred plus First Nations?

An article by Doug George-Kanentiio, Akwesasne Mohawk, that the Two Row Times has broken up into several sections that will run through the next few weeks What constitutes a lie?

There are the obvious verbal and written distortions of the truth, but what is not said may also be deemed a lie. Take this as an example: Mr. Thompson goes to the A-1 Used Car Dealer.

He is told that the vehicle he is interested in is in top shape, will pass inspection and is safe to drive. Based upon this assurance he buys the car and is driving home when the accelerator sticks. Despite his best efforts to slow down the car speeds up. When he tries to apply the brakes nothing happens. He tries to shift gears but the transmission does not work. He races into an intersection, swerves to avoid another car and crashes into a telephone pole, suffering many injuries.

The A-1 dealer is not only sued, but indicted on a number of charges. He is held liable not because of what he said but his failure to tell Mr. Thompson about the car’s defects. In this case, silence had dire con-

sequences.

So too, the deliberate exclusion of Native history from U.S. and Canadian schools along with the outright fabrications, distortions and omissions which have formed the basis upon which both nations have built their respective laws, social policies and economies. There is no doubt that these actions have caused demonstrable, permanent and extensive harm to Native people.

The late Mohawk teacher, Ray Fadden-Tehanetorens was among the first to challenge the lies the colonists used to demonize Natives and thereby justify the theft of a continent. Writers and historians brave enough to strip these myths bare and reveal uncomfortable truths have followed his historic work with the Mohawks.

Books have been written ( “Lies My Teacher Told Me”, “1491””A People’s History of the United States”, “Indian Giver”, “Lies Across America”, “American Indian Holocaust and Survival”, “The Forgotten History of America”) which tell a story quite different from the standard history texts used in high schools and colleges.

From these, and from Mr. Fadden, I have compiled a list of 10 of the many great lies in North

American history.

1. Natives came from Asia. This teaching is not only stupid, but a denial of physical and biological fact. No group of humans would be so dumb as to cross thousands of kilometres of tundra then risk their lives across a massive bog before being confronted by massive glaciers three kilometres high and hundreds of kilometres long. That was the Bering Strait during the Ice Age 15,000 years ago.

The “theory” of this crossing is contradicted by the latest DNA tests and omits one obvious fact: there is no physical evidence to support this myth yet it is cited today as a rationale to undermine indigenous ownership to our ancestral lands and is often used by our critics to label our people as immigrants just like the Europeans.

2. The continent of North America-Anonwarakowa was a howling wilderness, under populated by roaming bands of Stone Age nomads. Another stupid, nonsensical lie in the face of hard facts.

There was no place in the Americas where Native people did not live and in the millions. As the anthropologist Henry Dobyns writes; “ ..the size of the CONTINUED ON PAGE 37

Ignorance, arrogance or intimidation?

First, let's put the simple facts out there: in all of the legalese, questions of fairness, who is regulating who, what is permitted and what is agreed upon; the one thing that is definitive and indisputable is that there is no mention of revenue sharing payments beyond 14 years in the Gaming Compact between the Seneca Nation and the State of New York.

The other thing that is not in dispute is that 14 years of the revenue sharing provision of that Gaming Compact concluded in December of 2016. So when Seneca leaders learned that State and municipal budget proposals were including revenue sharing payments as part of their 2017 budgets, there was obvious concern.

The first question was, why? Was this just a simple mistake? A carry forward of a revenue flow that just seemed as normal and inevitable as taxes? The Senecas are no strangers to conflicts with New York but this clearly should not be another one and this was definitely not a tax. This is not about trying to interpret old documents, treaties, wampum belts or even sovereignty issues.

The language is clear and the payments were for 14 years. That's it. So really all that was needed was to let the State and those municipalities know that the last payment was going out at the end of March for that final payment that completed the Seneca obligation that ended last December.

But nothing is ever easy or simple for Native people when dealing with New York State or the federal government for that matter. Several mainstream

journalists even called out the State for their blunder and questioned how such a mistake could be made.

The Buffalo News on one end of the State and the New York Post on the other had articles written by individuals who took the time to read the terms of the compact and came to the obvious conclusion that the revenue sharing term was done. Susan Arbetter, host of the Capitol Pressroom, said "But to be fair; it wasn't only the State caught by surprise" when the Seneca Nation informed them that no more revenue was coming. She cited the municipalities putting this money into their budgets as well. And, again, questioned how such a misunderstanding could occur.

Early on, I chalked it up to willful ignorance and even a refusal to actually read the terms. But as it turns out, it may not have been an oversight. As discussions have begun, it is pretty evident that folks from some of those municipalities read this thing the same way the Senecas did and raised the point. Unfortunately, they only raised it with the State rather than the Senecas. So not only were the municipalities concerned about the end of free money, but the State was also very aware of the 14 year term as well.

But the State simply chose to reject those terms and assured those who raised the questions that the Senecas would keep paying. Even after Seneca leaders told the State that payments were ending, the State still put Seneca gaming revenue into their budget.

Now these municipalities are being caught into another conflict created by the State. As the Seneca Nation invites them to the table to work out new arrangements that could at very least address their concerns over costs associated with services they provide to the Seneca gaming venues, the State is telling them not to worry and that the money will flow. Of course, this puts the municipalities in the

awkward spot of deciding whether to sit with the Senecas or line up behind the Governor.

And when I say the municipalities were being told the money would continue to flow, I am talking about direct quotes. In an Assembly budget hearing in the first week of April, the Republican Assemblyman from the 145th District, Angelo Morinelli asked the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, the Democrat from the 71st District, Herman Farrell, that since Seneca gaming revenue was put in the State budget, was there a contingency plan to pay the municipalities affected by a dispute out of unallocated funds.

Farrell replied that there was not and assured the Assemblyman from Niagara Falls that the Senecas would pay for another seven years. Morinelli responded by saying the Seneca leadership was clear that they would not continue, while Farrell claimed "his" Senecas were telling him otherwise. The interesting part was listening to these two white men speak with such confidence about what they "knew" about what the Senecas would or wouldn't do. Morinelli spoke of compact procedures involving arbitration and conflict resolution and Farrell spoke of clear assurances that money would continue to flow even in the event of a conflict. It seems that whatever the source of this "knowledge" was, it didn't include the ability of either of these two men to simply read the terms of the revenue sharing provision of the gaming compact.

But beyond the ignorance displayed by these elected officials, the question remains, why did the Governor put Seneca gaming revenue in the State budget even after the Seneca leadership told them that those payments were completed in December.

In fact, in spite of a billion and a half dollars flowing into State coffers over the last 14 years, the State continues to attack the Native tobacco industry. Seizures, arrests, lawsuits, threats and propaganda are established State policy as it relates to the Native tobacco trade, even with Native brands, transported by Native companies exclusively to Native territories. The State's strong-arm tactics that never ceased even when gaming issues were settled, raise the question as to whether the State goes down this same path with gaming.

The addition of Seneca gaming revenue could have just been a mistake.

It could have been just a hope that maybe the Senecas would just keep paying in spite of the language in the compact. Perhaps the State believed the Senecas didn't mind the lopsidedness of the revenue sharing "deal" and were so used to the unfairness that they would just keep

paying. OR perhaps the very claim of the federal law on Native gaming, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), that it was passed to "protect" Native gaming from organized crime and abuse by the states; actually may have so emboldened the states (New York anyway) that the two threats have become hard to distinguish.

Assemblyman Morinelli took his concerns about the costs of municipalities providing services to Seneca gaming to Albany in spite of the invitation by the Seneca Nation to sort out those services and the offer to cover those costs.

The answers he received were what you would expect when you ask questions of the wrong people.

The Senecas have set the table. Elected officials have to realize that this opportunity to talk is neither a right nor a requirement. The Seneca Nation doesn't "need" to meet with local officials nor do they "need" to pay the municipalities. If local officials prefer to sit at the

Governor's table, it is their prerogative but it is also a choice. The municipalities may forgo the invitation but other leaders from the communities, including trade organizations and unions can fill those seats to maintain the relations between the Senecas and their neighbors just fine.

The question now remains whether the local elected officials from these municipalities will sit with their neighbors or play politics with their broken political system in Albany.

They may learn that their choice was either/or, not all of the above.

More evidence of Original Peoples of Turtle Island

By Jim Windle ISRAEL – The Haaretz News out of Israel recently published a report that would indicate humans have been in what is today known as the Americas, as far back as 100,000 to 150,000 years.

The article is entitled “Native Americans Have Actually Been There Since the Beginning, Say Archaeologists” written

by Elizabeth Sloane. In it, she builds a case from archaeology and oral history.

“Oral histories are usually considered fabulous. Now ancient skeletons and a genetic study proves that the Tlingit and Haida tribes' oral history of being there from the beginning is based on fact,” writes Sloane.

Ancient bones found in the 1990s at an Alaskan dig site known as “On Your Knees Cave” and tested by todays latest electronic equipment has shown to be more than

10,000 years old, but the real discovery came when genetic remnants from the sample bones were tested against a data base of DNA information gathered from hundreds of indigenous people around the world showed the three skeletons DNA was very close to that of the Tlingit and Haida of today, offering evidence that a population of early humans in North America remained in the area and eventually became the Tlingit and Haida.

According to the Israeli report, “The initial study was based on mitochondrial DNA from the skeleton, who had been dubbed Shuká Káa – "Man Ahead of Us". The geneticists did not get a positive genetic match between Shuká Káa and the tribe. However, analyzing isotopes from his teeth, they discovered that Shuká Káa ate a marine diet and was, therefore, probably a seafarer.

“That, however, was not the end. New and

improved methods of genetic sequencing allowed geneticists to revisit the issue. The last of Shuká Káa’s tissue was removed from his molars and compared to DNA from three other ancient, though more recent, skeletons using nuclear DNA sequencing. Shuká Káa was also found to be related to tribes from Central and South America.”

Shuká Káa DNA has also been found in three younger skeletons from British Columbia, dating back to a much later time.

Farther south from the Alaskan find a mastodon tusk that was believed to have been worked by human hands was tested with modern technology and found to be between 100,000 and 130,000 years old, 115,000 years before previously accepted.

According to Haaretz, it is also tens of thousands of years before the migration of Homo sapiens out of Africa that is believed to have populated today's world.

For several years since its inception at around the same time as the Caledonia standoff, Six Nations band members have been trying to get answers from the HDI relative to specific financial arrangements it has made with developers and energy companies. But more so, about who is making what from the HDI deals, including Detlor’s retainer agreement with the HCCC, the money paid to Turtle Island News publisher Lynda Powless’ to act as HDI’s media agency. They also want answers about any other unspecified salaries or funds paid to individuals.

vie and Bill Monture launched a class action suit on behalf of the community. The men themselves insist they are not seeking any kind of personal financial reward, only that the HDI become transparent with the people they are supposed to represent.

It has been the HDI’s stance that they work for the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council. As such, they believe a forensic investigation of the HDI’s finances is in order.

The court agreed and moved the case on to Justice Lococo to determine if the HDI will be ordered to reveal certain aspects of their operation that until now, which the Men’s Fire and others allege have been kept secret from the Six Nations public at large.

Lococo has been assigned the class action case against the HDI and lawyer Aaron Detlor on behalf of members of the Men’s Fire and Six Nations people at large. The date is yet to be set; however, Mr. Justice Arrel has assigned the case to Justice Lococo, who is this region’s only class action justice.

Contrary to reports elsewhere, the class action case is not dead and is in fact making its way through the courts.

Missing teen THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police are urging the public for assistance in finding a missing indigenous teen.

Josiah Begg was last seen on May 6 at 10 p.m. near the Vale Community Centre.

His family is now urging the public for help in finding the 14-year-old boy.

Dozens of volunteers worked throughout the weekend to help find him.

Woman hiding after public hate attacks EDMONTON — The mother of a slain toddler is hiding from the public after people on social media attacked her for the child’s death.

The bruised body 18 month old Anthony Raine was found in Edmonton outside a local church.

His father Joey Crier and girlfriend Tasha Mack have been arrested and charged with second degree murder in his death.

Commenters on social media blame the mother, who was away at school when her son was killed saying the child likely had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and should have been put up for adoption.

Community workers from the Samson Cree First Nation say the young woman has been approached and attacked in public by strangers who recognize her from the news coverage.

RCMP are investigating the online comments as a hate crime.

By TRT staff OHSWEKEN – A mobile cancer screening detection unit will be here in Ohsweken as part of this year’s Community Awareness Week.

One of the most important safety precautions someone can do in regards to cancer is finding out early on what your risks may be, getting screen early and identifying any concerns that arise. The Screen-For-Life Coach offers three different types of screenings — breast cancer, cervical cancer and colon cancer.

“These three screenings find problems early, before you feel them and before you notice symptoms,” said Alyssa Higginson, last year’s cancer screening co-ordinator for the regional cancer program at last year’s event. “If you wait until you notice symptoms then chances are that the problem is a little more advanced. With screening, in some respects, we’re able to prevent cancer altogether.”

The coach is a 45-footlong bus, which has a state-of-the-art digital mammography suite, two change rooms, a waiting room and an exam room.

It is also wheelchair accessible.

“It’s wheelchair accessible, but those in wheelchairs or those that can’t walk may need some extra

help manoeuvring around the bus,” said Higginson.

“We can definitely make it work for everybody.”

Higginson said the program increases access to cancer screening for anyone who has barriers.

“We want to make sure everyone has equal access to early screening,” she said. “So we bring the coach here to community awareness week to ensure that everyone at the event is able to access breast, cervical and colorectal screening.

“If you get a pap smear done and we find abnormal cells, we can get rid of them before they even turn into cancer,” she said.

“Same thing with colon screening – if you go for a colonoscopy or complete a Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) we can find irregularities and take of them before anything goes wrong.”

A Fecal Occult Blood Test is simple, takes minutes, and can be done in the privacy of your own home.

Testing kits can be picked up at Gane: Yohs and once complete dropped off at the laboratory. Results will be mailed to you in a confidential manner and any positive results forwarded to your family doctor.

“With an FOBT you put a little sample of your stool on the provided card a few times a week and then drop it off,” said Higginson. “It gets tested and

you’ll be notified if something was found and you need further testing. It’s all about being preventative and finding things early — even colon cancer is 90 per cent treatable when found early.”

The coach offers a full mammogram machine and it provides the same quality of service that you would receive anywhere else. Higgingson said that although some level of discomfort is expected, it all depends on the individual and that the staff on the coach does their best to make it as comfortable as possible.

“It can be pretty scary for some women if they are stressed or if they think it’s going to hurt,” said. “The staff on board do their best to make it as painless as possible and guide you through the process.”

Darlene LaForme, a community member, was screened for breast cancer at last year’s event. Following the tour LaForme told us about her experience.

“This was my second time getting screened on the coach,” she said.

“It definitely is a good squeeze, but you just have to breathe through it. It’s a really quick test.

When it comes to your health it’s good to know for sure where you stand.

Haldimand Tract, 1784, where they settled

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – Around 1783 to 1785, the colonial government was very busy setting up what would devolve into the biggest land fraud in Canadian history.

Joseph Brant knew and came to trust Sir Frederick Haldimand, and believed in the integrity of the Crown of Britain. So when the Haldimand Promise was issued to the Mohawks on the recommendation of Haldimand’s predecessor, Guy Carlton, that an equal amount of land to any land the Mohawks lost if they join allegiance with Britain against the unruly American rebels, Brant wanted to hear more.

But Brant wasn’t blindly subservient to the Crown and wanted some assurances. Brant found them acceptable, as did the warriors of the Mohawks and any others from the Five Nations or their allies who would also be cut in on the promise following the end of the American Revolution, no matter which way it went.

Brant fully expected the Crown to finish surveying the land promised “six miles deep along the Grand River from its source to its mouth”. That was not to be the case.

Brant eventually led a warrior colony to the banks of the Grand, but the contingent did not represent all of the Five Nations recognized as principal tribes.

The rest signed the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, all but the Mohawks, who walked out of the meeting when it was discovered what the American Government was trying to get them to pledge allegiance to the Americans. Even today the Treaty of Fort Stanwix is said to be when the Six Nations made peace with America. But without the Mohawks, there was no “Six Nations” agreement, only individual tribal agreements signed onto by the Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Tuscarora and Seneca.

There was also a village close by for 113 allied Oghquagos, and “Oghquagos Josephs Party) with 49.

Farther north along the tract was the Lower Cayuga Village with 183 members. The Delaware as well as the Tuscarora and all other tribes under the umbrella of the Confederacy were brought under the protection of the League (Confederacy) through the Cayugas, as the Great Law directs.

According to another early map, there were also United Empire Loyalists settling on lands granted by the Crown along the Grand.

Just south of that Cayuga village the Nelles (Nehl’s) settlement is located “consisting of about 30 families of whites who settled here 40 years since,” which would have been around the same time as Brant took possession of the Haldimand Tract.

Just upstream from there was the settlement of the Onondaga (called Barefoots).

Still farther up the river settled the Seneca, and above that, more Onondaga (a different clan).

The Tuscarora were next, located where today’s Six Nations Reserve No. 40 is. The map states that a school and a village were to be built by the Indian Department at that site.

At a severe bend in the river, which came to be known as the Oxbow, the Mohawk Village was established by Brant between the Ancaster Road and the River in what is now known as Eagle Place.

Westward across the river, and high on a bluff were the Tutelo, overlooking the Mohawk Village.

Cultural appropriation continued from page 7 willfully ignore the plight of the Indigenous in their own land while claiming to be a safe haven for refugees and immigrants? Is it because Canada is pushing through with a Canada 150 celebration while outstanding Indigenous land, water, and social issues fall by the wayside?

Canada purports to have human rights and free speech but when the Indigenous exercise any of these rights, it is “playing the race card” or “identity politics”. The “race card” is a settler invention. Did they not receive doctrines and writs decreeing that the original people were savages, sub-human and therefore best handled with termination or assimilation? They even have the Indian Act, a longstanding racist piece of legislation that is specific to the Indian people.

If the original peoples choose to pursue and defend their identity, laws and languages, then identity politics - that is a different value system - is seen as a threat to existing Canadian mainstream institutions.

The original agreements enshrined through treaties, between the UK Crown and the original peoples, are acknowledged as a framework for a shared existence. The treaties were not bills of sale for the land, waters and resources that are held in trust for all life in this island. In fact Canada, the successor state to the UK has yet to produce a bill of sale that validates their “ownership” of this country.

Where have the settlers proven that their ideas of “progress” and development are better for the planet or all peoples? Very few benefit from capitalism and as the planet reacts to capitalist systems, it is becoming clearer that a shared existence is the way for all people, plants and animals to survive.

This is the heart of the debate in cultural appropriation. There are significant ways, specific paths and distinct protocols followed by true Indigenous contributors. They follow spiritual trails that record an alternate history of this land. The voices in the mountains, the rivers, and land still speak. It is these

voices that the Indigenous safeguard, protect and share. If the colonized can understand that the Indigenous way of thinking or worldview is different, then there may be a way to reconcile two societies.

If this latest debacle is an indicator of trust or growth, then Canada is still miserably failing. Me-

dia portrays the stories that stream to all people on the planet. With this portrayal is a responsibility to report on the truth.

Can the truth be reported or adequately covered if those that control media do not want to hear, see, understand or print the Indigenous truth?

The argument then gets

watered down to equality.

We are all human beings therefore equal. In the European background, the divine right of kings and the hierarchy of man had existed; therefore “equality” was not always an accepted notion. Here in North America, equality is measured by those privileged to perpetuate a

myth of “fairness.

Is it fair that non- Indigenous men of mainstream make the laws, policies and interpret these areas back to what “they” think is fair?

The Indigenous are speaking. This is the voice that is rising. It is the voice that has always been in this land and will continue

to exist. Indigenous people are the fastest growing segment in the Canadian population therefore; it is in the best interests of all to understand and celebrate our differences. It is this difference or diversity of all voices that needs to be heard for universal survival.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Highways 6 & 401 Improvements from Hamilton North Limits to Guelph South Limits Including the New Alignment of a Segment of Highway 6 (G.W.P. 3042-14-00) Detailed Design and Class Environmental Assessment THE PROJECT The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is moving forward with a Preliminary Design Review and Detailed Design under the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for improvements to Highway 6 and Highway 401 in the Township of Puslinch, Wellington County, and the City of Hamilton.

BACKGROUND The Preliminary Design phase of this study was documented in the EA report for Highway 6 Freelton Northerly 16.9 km to Guelph (W.P. 65-76-05), September 1995, and in the 1997 Addendum. A Review under the EA Act was completed by the Ministry of Environment in June 2007. A Notice of Approval to Proceed with the Undertaking was subsequently granted by Order in Council on January 22, 2009. A portion of the Preliminary Design along Highway 401 was amended by a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) in 2012 for the Preliminary Design and Class EA for Highway 401 from west of Hespeler Road to the Wellington/Halton Boundary (G.W.P. 8-00-00).

The approved Preliminary Design includes: • A new controlled access four-lane alignment of Highway 6 west of the existing highway, from Highway 6 at Maddaugh Road northerly to Highway 401; • Improvements to the Highway 6 / Maddaugh Road intersection; • Structures to carry CP Rail, Calfass Road, Concession Road 1 and Fielding Lane across the new Highway 6 alignment; • A new two-lane connection road north of the community of Morriston, linking the existing and new alignments of Highway 6; • Reconfiguration of the Highway 401 interchanges at Highway 6 / Wellington Road 46 (Brock Road), and at Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway); • Widening of approximately 3 km of Highway 401 to 10 lanes including High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes between the two Highway 6 interchanges; • Replacement of the Hanlon Expressway intersection at Wellington Road 34 with a bridge (no connection to the highway); • Closure of the Hanlon Expressway intersection at Maltby Road / Concession Road 4; • A new Hanlon Expressway interchange approximately mid-way between Wellington Road 34 and Maltby Road / Concession Road 4 linking Wellington Road 34 on the west side of the Hanlon Expressway to Concession Road 7 on the east side of the Hanlon Expressway; • Reconstruction of the section of Concession Road 7 between the new interchange and Wellington Road 34; • Replacement of the Puslinch Concession Road 7 Bridge over Highway 401; and • Reconfiguration and expansion of the Wellington Road 46 (Brock Road) commuter parking lot.

THE PROCESS This study is subject to the Ontario EA Act and will be completed in accordance with the MTO Class EA for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) process for a Group A project with the opportunity for public input. A review will be undertaken to determine if significant changes have occurred since submission of the 1995 EA, 1997 Addendum and 2012 TESR. In the event that significant changes are identified, a TESR Addendum will be made available for a 30-day public and agency review period. The Detailed Design phase will be documented in Design and Construction Report(s) (DCRs) that will be made available for public and agency review. The DCR(s) will document the study process, Detailed Design and associated environmental impacts, mitigation measures, and a summary of consultation undertaken.

CONSULTATION AND COMMENTS Consultation and engagement will take place throughout the study with the public, Indigenous peoples, regulatory agencies and municipalities. A Public Information Centre (PIC) is planned for 2017 to provide an opportunity to discuss the study with members of the Project Team. Notifications advising of the time and location of the PIC, and of the availability of the TESR Addendum (if required) and DCR’s will be published in local newspapers, posted on the project website, and mailed to those on the project mailing list.

Book Launch: Our Ways, Our Responsibilities

By TRT Staff BRANTFORD – The Woodland Cultural Centre opened it's auditorium doors to family and friends that wished to enjoy the book launch for “Tsi Niyonkwariho:tens: Our Ways Our Responsibilities” which is a collective of life stories from various Six Nations elders written by indigenous students from the Brantford Collegiate Institute.

As a major piece of the Elders Project artistic team, Project Co-ordinator Lorrie Gallant wrote to explain the title choice of the book.

“There really isn't a word in our languages that translates to elder,” wrote Gallant. “The English language has taught people to assume we are speaking about elderly people but that is not the case. When indigenous people say the word 'elder' we are referring to the wise ones; the ones that have something to share with us.”

This is why “Tsi Niyonkwariho”tens” was used as a way to recognize the “wise ones.” But, Gallant went on to explain that the book wasn't the entire basis of the project.

“This book is not the purpose of this project but simply the result,” she wrote. “Conversations took place that didn't make it to these pages, inspiring words were

passed down, and were written on the hearts of the youth.”

Gallant along with her daughter Holly Gallant, Sherri Vansickle, Naomi Johnson and Chezney Martin each worked in respective areas for the project with nine students to complete the booklet, which will be used as an archive of the chosen elders.

And as the co-ordinator of the students, Vansickle also wrote to second Gallant.

“What a beautiful and precious journey to take with these young people as they listened to the stories of our elders,” wrote Vansickle. “There were times of tears, shock, anger and of course lots of laughter when the young ones shared what they were learning.”

“My optimism for the faces yet to come grows as I watch our youth interview and photograph our older friends,” she wrote. “My hope is that our young people will continue to learn about and practice our original instructions about how to live a life such that they continue to strive to be good Onkwehon:we.”

Each of the students: MacKenzie Henhawk-General, Caleb Johnson, Lexi Martin, Cherokee Maracle-Jamieson, Creedon VenEvery, Samantha Miller, Dion Martin, Kaysha Jamieson, and Jena Hill each worked diligently after selecting an elder to interview to

The likes of Norma General-Lickers, Rebecca Jamieson, Beverley Jacobs, John Elliot, Dawn Hill, Tom Deer, Tim Johnson, Ava Hill, Elizabeth Doxtator and Carol Jacobs grace the pages of the book as their stories range from academics to overcoming colonization.

The book is a powerful archive that documents and recognizes the lives of the elders, and captures the spirit of connecting the wise to the young.

When it comes to filmmaking and photography; indigenous women are the leaders in our communities and nations. Celebrated indigenous artist Shelley Niro has won the $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award. Niro was named recipient of the lucrative prize at a gala in Toronto recently. Shelly Niro is a Mohawk filmmaker and visual artist living in Brantford. She is most noted for her photographs using herself and female family members cast in contemporary positions to challenge the stereotypes and clichés of “Native American” women.

Niro was the inaugural recipient of the Aboriginal Arts Award presented through the Ontario Arts Council in 2012, and was a 2017 winner of the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.

The winners of the REVEAL Indigenous Art Awards have been announced, with 150 artists in a variety of fields each receiving $10,000. Besides Shelley Niro other members of Six Nations to win this award included; Melissa General, Bear Witness and Santee Smith. Laureates were selected by a national jury of peers led by Victoria Henry, chair of the Hnatyshyn Foundation and will be awarded at an event in Winnipeg on May 22, 2017.

On new TV channel Viceland; 'Rise' a Viceland docuseries series is winning awards written and directed

by Michelle Latimer of Métis/Algonquin heritage who grew up in Thunder Bay but currently lives in Hamilton.

“Thanks to the water protectors for awakening the world in ‘Rise’ season one. We travel to Indigenous communities across the Americas to meet people protecting their homelands and rising up against colonization.” The Green Film Fest San Francisco 2017 where ‘Rise’ won the Best Feature Award “at the heart of this passionate docuseries is injustice; the rights of a dispossessed, persecuted race abused by state and corporations in avaricious pursuit of natural resources.”

This Viceland docuseries series which examines indigenous life in the modern age and gives viewers a rare glimpse into the front line of indigenous-led resistance. The winning program includes two episodes: Red Power: Standing Rock Part II (2017) and Sacred Water: Standing Rock Part I (2017). The Viceland series ‘Rise’ premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. To watch the episodes check www.viceland.com Even when men who become women have success making films like in the case of Sydney Freeland. Whose film ‘Drunktown’s Finest” made the cut at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. On a beautifully desolate Navajo reservation in New Mexico, three young people — a college-bound, devout Christian; a rebellious and angry father-to-be; and a promiscuous but gorgeous transsexual — search for love and acceptance.

Prior to making her first feature-length film, ‘Drunktown's Finest’, Freeland worked in a number of areas, including; The Food Network, Walt Disney, Comedy Central, and National Geographic. The film's name is inspired by a controversial 20/20 segment on ABC News, which branded the town of Gallup, New Mexico as "Drunk Town, USA", after the increase of instances of alcoholism on the border of the Navajo Nation.

Freeland wrote, directed 'Drunktown's Finest' as means to combat the negative stereotype of her home community. Freeland, who is herself a transgender woman, also directed a digital series about queer and trans women called ‘Her Story’. The series was nominated for the newly-created Emmy Award category of Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama. Sydney was raised on a Navajo reservation, and her hometown, Gallup, attended Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She is a 2004 Fulbright scholar, focusing her scholarship on a field study of indigenous peoples in Ecuador. She has a Master of Fine Arts in film, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in computer animation. Freeland is a 2007 Disney Scholarship recipient and a 2008 Disney Fellowship semifinalist. Freeland is also a 2009 Sundance Institute Native Lab fellow.

Believing in a nearly vacant land justifies not only its theft but also the murder of its inhabitants. Dobyns places the pre-contact population of the western hemisphere at 112,000,000 with an estimated 9,800,000 living north of Mexico. In what is now Mexico there were more than 30,000,000 natives. By the year 1900 less than 400,000 indigenous people survived in North America, the remnants of hundreds of nations and societies systematically slaughtered, starved, hunted, confined and contaminated by the colonists.

3. Natives did not have science, were primitive and bound by superstitions. The first step towards subjugating a people is to de-humanize them. By denying Natives intellect, reason and capable of complex thought the Europeans rationalized their killing. In truth, Natives were master builders, agriculturalists, foresters, mathematicians, astronomers, urban planners, political theorists, biologists, artists and writers. They designed and built cities, conducted trade, entered into treaties and established societies in which humans were able to live without adversely affecting their environment. Native spirituality was based upon natural law, which in turn required a formidable knowledge as to the world in which they lived. But one example from Ray Fadden: Native physicians had mastered the art of surgery hundreds of years before the Europeans and there is not one herbal plant in the Americas unknown to Native pharmacists.

4. Christopher Columbus, Italian, was a brave sea captain who used the pawned jewels of Spanish Queen Isabella to discover America. All lies: there was no Italy at the time of the explorer’s birth. A man named Cristolo Columbo was born in the latter part of the 15th century in the city state of Genoa but this was not the explorer. He was, according to self-identification from Barcelona in Catalonia, now part of Spain.

His name was Cristobal Colon. He spoke, thought and wrote in Catalonian, a distinct language. He never spoke in the Genovese dialect of Italian. He came from an upper class

family and had red hair, a distinctive characteristic of the Catalonians. He paid for his 1492 voyage with funds stolen by Isabella from the Jews she expelled from Spain. His ships were all named after prostitutes and he was never lost since he possessed sea charts, which clearly showed a land mass at a specific distance west of the Azores.

He was an incapable gover-

nor who brought slavery to the Caribbean and engaged in the selling of children for sexual exploitation. Not until long after his death was the name “Columbus” made popular. He discovered nothing.

5. The pilgrims came to American to find religious freedom. This lie has become a cornerstone of American history and is often cited by self-serving

politicians. The pilgrims arrived in 1620 in a region where, a year before, tens of thousands of Natives lived. The Europeans had been trying for a century to colonize the eastern coast of North America only to be turned back by the hundreds of thousands of Natives who would not permit this. The Pilgrims were highly intolerant of other spiritual traditions and ventured to this continent so they could continue their repressive, highly or-

37 thodox ways. A few months before they landed at Cape Code an epidemic swept through the region killing most of the inhabitants.

Only then were they able to land and then endure by stealing Native food. Only when friendly aboriginals taught them Native plating techniques were they able to survive. A generation later these same Pilgrims would launch a series of military attacks on their former hosts in which tens of thousands of Native

men, women and children were exterminated.

By TRT staff SIX NATIONS – According to statistics provided by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, people living on a First Nation are 10.4 times likely to die as a result of a house fire than any other community in Canada.

The Six Nations of the Grand River Community is living proof of these statistics, on average the Six Nations Fire and Emergency Services responds to two to three major structure fires per month.

This is why the Six Nations Fire and Emergency Services take fire prevention and fire protection in our community so seriously, and wishes to inform the community that early notification of fire through the use of

What is known as the Upper Cayuga Village was roughly parallel to Tutela Heights but inland, further south from the river at around Burtch.

Finally is the Methodist Mohawk village of Davis Hamlet, or Davisville, located between Brantford and Paris on the river near Tollgate Road in Brantford is noted. Davisville was a joint Mohawk and Mississauga village for only around 30 years before the overflowing of the river forced them to relocate at the original Mohawk Village, around Sour Springs Church and,

for the Mississaugas, to where the New Credit reserve is now located.

A group of Oneida drifted further north, around today’s London to settle.

When the Crown amalgamated all of these villages into one 40,000-acre reserve, they threw not only Confederacy tribes but their allied tribes into one pot, ignoring the cultural and linguistic differences represented.

As Canada celebrates its 150-year anniversary, the people of Six Nations celebrate its own identity every year with Community Awareness Day, Bread and Cheese Day and Solidarity Day, when the Mohawks, Six Nations and their allied Nations, celebrate their own history and culture.

By Jim Windle BRANTFORD – A second round KO improved the value of stocks in Six Nations boxer, Karl “The Razor” Hess Friday night at the Brantford Curling Club.

“We stuck to our game plan, see what he’s got in the first round and when he got him hurt, moved in on him,” says Black Eye Boxing coach, Jackie Armour. “I think we may have lost that first round, but I was kinda expecting that. Razor gained a lot of confidence and then went right at him in the second.”

Armour was happy to live through a promotor’s nightmare when Hess’ original opponent dropped out at the last minute. Since Hess was the main event, of the show, Armour had to make frantic calls around the boxing scene to find a replacement.

He found a game and well-trained fighter in

Rolland put on a good show in the first, until Hess opened up on him with a flurry of rights and lefts, finally rocking him with a right to put him on the canvas. Although he got up the ref felt he had taken enough.

“I think after he had

taken a pounding the ref looked into his eyes and maybe they were dilated, or he didn’t look like he had any fight left in him,” said Armour.

Hess regards Rolland one of the biggest challenges he has faced so far.

“He is a really good fighter, he had lots of gas,” said Hess following the fight. “I was getting a little frustrated in the first round.”

that round and the ring doctor had a look, the fight continued. Armour explains, “I think that was more to wipe up any blood. In this day and age, (with the AIDS virus) I think it’s a good idea.”

Hess is now 12-1 and has made a big step forward with his convincing KO win. Hess is now fighting in the “Open” class and as a result can take fights against much more experienced fighters as

he makes his way up the ladder towards possibly turning pro.

Also on the card was Paul Longboat, a heavy weight and also from Six Nations. Unfortunately his scheduled opponent broke a knuckle in training and could not fight and Armour was unable to find a last minute replacement for him.

There was a strong representation of Six Nations fight fans on hand

as well as visiting fans for a very good turnout at the Brantford Curling Club.

“I’m so grateful to how many Six Nations fans came out to follow Karl,” said Armour.

He expects to see Longboat in the ring very soon and has great hope for him in the Heavy Weight division.

Rebels shock Spartans 22-4, paste Pacers 14-6

SIX NATIONS — With the last two easy wins this past week, and without calculating a Tuesday night game in Niagara which will miss our deadline, they hold first place in the South West Division, but first overall of the 25 teams of the OJBLL with a 8-1-0 record for 16 points. It is expected the Rebels will win Tuesday night, the question will be by how much.

Offensively, the Rebels lead the league by a wide margin with 138 goals while giving up a stingy 54 so far, without Tuesday’s stats added.

Last time the Thunderhawks and Rebels met, Six Nations turned in a 21-6 win.

Saturday night at the Point Edward Arena, Layne Smith Added six goals and an assist to his impressive statistics and, again without Tuesday night’s results, has amassed 27 goals and 13 assists for 40 points in nine games. Tanner Baldwin scored six goals and assisted on another as the Six Nations Jr. B Rebels flexed their scoring muscle by crushing the St. Catharines Spartans 22-4, Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Spartans were outshot 77-35 along the way, as the Rebels seemed to score at will.

There were several multiple-point Rebels in a well-balanced attack.

Wes Whitlow (3G,5A), Gates Abrams (1G,5A), Josh Miller (2G,4A), Layne Smith (3G,1A), Sid Powless (2G,2A), and Chayton King (2G,3A) all add points to their stats sheets.

With all this success and talent, one might think coaching this team would be easy, but for rookie coach Miles General, good is never good enough and admits it’s hard to keep your edge when you are winning so easily. But to prevent

falling into bad habits General has a new strategy for his team beginning with moving their practice times from Thursday to Wednesday.

“We didn’t want to go too hard on the guys on a Thursday night practice just before a Friday night game, so I think we have been a little too lax at practice,” says General. “We’ve been getting a lot of goals, yes, but we haven’t been getting them right way. SIX NATIONS – Unless you follow them on the road, Six Nations Jr. A Arrow fans will have to wait until the annual “Bread and Cheese” game on Victoria Day to see this year’s edition at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena (ILA). But the Arrows’ 2017 campaign began Friday night at the Ted Reeve Arena, in Toronto, with a very close 10-9 win, fending off a late Toronto Beaches rally.

Jeremy Bomberry scored the first goal of season for the Arrows at 2:03 of the first period, assisted by Cody Ward.

The Beaches responded with two goals but McCoy Abrams, Oliver Bolsterli and a short-hander by the end of the period for a 4-2 Six Nations lead.

Toronto cut into that lead in the second period, which ended 8-7 af-

ter 40 minutes of play.

Abrams, Bomberry, Kason Tarbell, and Cory Highfield scored for the Arrows. Abrams opened the third period with his third of the game, which Toronto’s Aaron Foster answered. Ward netting what would be the winner for Sox Nations and they would need the insurance goal as Toronto brought themselves back to within one, with five minutes remaining. But Doug Jamieson and the Arrows defense held the line to secure the season opening 10-9 win.

The Arrows will be back on the road Friday, May 19, when they roll into Brampton to see the Excelsiors for the first time this year. That sets up the Bread and Cheese game, Monday, May 22 when the St. Catharines Athletics with be the opposition at the ILA, in a 3 p.m. start.

The Six Nations Warriors slaughter Mimico 17-8

SIX NATIONS – The Warriors are off to an impressive 4-0 start to the Jr. C season after making short work of the visiting Mimico squad at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena (ILA) Sunday afternoon, by the score of 17-8.

Needless to say, new head coach Jay Smith is happy with what he is getting from his team and the atmosphere in the dressing room, so far at least.

“We’re looking good but we still have to tweak and trim the roster,” says Smith. “We have an abundance of good players. I don’t think it matters who we suit up. We are running away with everyone. Right now, I think we could dress two teams and both would win.”

Smith is proud of his team but knows it will not always be as easy as it has been so far this very young season.

“I don’t think we’ve had our biggest test yet,”

Montour adds sixth assist of the playoffs for Ducks

ANAHEIM — The Anaheim Ducks have become the comeback kids in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, pulling another third period come-from-behind heartbreaker for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and now, in Game No. 2 of their series against the Nashville Predators.

The Ducks have overcome deficits five times so far this post season, four of them after being down by multiple goals at some point in the game.

Game No. 1 against the Predators revealed Nashville as a team with a young and mobile defense, every bit as good the Ducks. The game ended in OT with the Predators taking the win.

Sunday’s Game No. 2 was another nail-biter.

This time the Ducks fought off the Predators to win 5-2 in Anaheim to even the series at one game apiece.

Game No. 3 was played Tuesday night and missed our deadline.

In that game, Brandon Montour, who is a +11, best among Anaheim defensemen, led a rush into the Nashville zone and created a scoring chance. But no one backed him up and when the puck changed hands, it resulted in a Nashville goal.

Despite the loss in Game No. 1, Montour was solid and threatened scoring his first NHL goal several times, only to be thwarted.

He rang a rocket off Gibson’s mask from the slot, which drew the attention of the TV commentators, wowed by his canon point shot.

Montour has been looking more confident every game and is being given more responsibilities as coach Randy Carlyle feels more confident with him as well.

The series resumed Tuesday night, with Game No. 3 in Nashville followed

by Game No. 4, Thursday night, also in Nashville.

Game No. 5 heads back to the Music City, Saturday night.

For Smith, the most important thing he wants to see is respect between the coaching staff and the players — both ways — and between teammates.

period left and the young Rebels cashed in on their let down with seven second period goals compared to Mimico’s one for a two period score of 14-5.

In the third, Mimico traded three goals apiece with the Warriors for the 17-8 final score. Mimico’s frustration boiled over in the third setting up a few tussles with main-even combatants Bronson Hill, hit with a five-minute fighting major, a five-minute aggressor major, a fighting 10-minute misconduct, a second 10-minute Fighting Major and a Game Misconduct. Bradley Hutchcraft made a bit of a miscalculation taking on the much smaller Hill.

Hutchcraft lost the fight and got a five-minute major and a game miscon-

duct in the bargain. Trent Hill also accumulated 49 minutes in penalties.

Adding points to their stats were Jaxon Martin (3G), Tyrese Staats (1G,3A), Trent Martin (1G,4A), Adam Martin (1G,1A), Lennox Mitten (1G,1A), Cecil Monture (1G), Thomas Todd (1A), Ryan Johnson (1G,4A), Riley Laforme-Hess (1G), Luke Monture (1G), Spencer Martin (1G,3A), Bronson Hill (2G,1A), and Marshall Powless (3G,3A).

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert VanEvery announces his passing suddenly on May 9th, 2017 at the age of 70 years.

Predeceased by his wife Frances V. VanEvery nee: Beaver, his son Francis Guy Beaver, parents George “Tubby” and Lenore VanEvery and siblings Barb Harris and Larry VanEvery.

Beloved brother of Eleanor “Cookie” Doolittle, Randel VanEvery (Norma) and Dallas Brock (Ron). Dear father of Trevor and Anna VanEvery, Sheila VanEvery, Robert “Starz” VanEvery Jr., and Robbe Beaver.

Loving stepfather of Maureen Turkey (Gary), Carmen Turkey, Cindy and Dago Silversmith, Frank Turkey Jr. (Dena), and Blake (Michelle).
