Two hurt: Gypsum Mine accident HALDIMAND – Two men were seriously hurt at the Canadian Gypsum Corporation Plant on Third Line after a rock slab fell on them while working in an underground mine.

OPP investigation determined on Thursday afternoon, two males were working together in the underground mine when a large slab of rock fell onto the two men, trapping one of them under the rock.

A 27-year-old male from Haldimand County was pinned underneath the slab of rock and employees nearby worked to remove it from him.

Haldimand County paramedics transported the male to an out of town hospital with life threatening injuries.

The other male, a 23-year-old also from Haldimand County, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.

The Ministry of Labour was notified and will be investigating the workplace accident.

BRANTFORD — One man is dead after police say he was shot late Friday night.

On April 5, 2019 at approximately 11:30pm the Brantford Police say they were called to a William Street address with reports of a male that had been assaulted, and a possible shooting.

Police say the victim was found at a home on

William street suffering from a gunshot wound and without vital signs. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

The victim was identified as Gerald Robert Male, 37, of Brantford.

Police say another male was located at the Williams Street residence and has not been identified as a suspect in the investigation.

This is the fifth shooting in Brantford in 2019.

In January one man was sent to hospital after a

shooting on Woodlawn Avenue. Police said the victim and two suspects knew each other.

In February two separate shooting incidents occurred a week apart.

Another person was shot in March involving two suspects.

The current investigation on William Street is now an open homicide investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Brantford Police.

An earlier crash occurred at Dalhousie and Rawdon Street. Police say a vehicle, identified as a

Preliminary investigation suggests that the two collisions are connected and involve the same motor vehicle.

The two women were walking at the intersection of Colborne and Clarence Street when they were

struck by a pick-up truck.

Both suffered serious injuries. The driver was not injured in the collision.

Police say that man is now facing two counts of dangerous driving, and two counts of criminal negligence.

SIX NATIONS — Police say they are investigating after a single vehicle accident on Mohawk Road.

On Friday, March 22 a grey Chevy truck lost control on Mohawk Road and rolled into the west ditch, striking a culvert.

was tasked with hashing out the cost for the vision.

It is a $2 billion need that would see everything from new schools, a residence building for Six Nations Polytechnic, transportation funding, early years education and adult learning with an immersive approach to Haudenosaunee values, culture and language.

Also proposed are a Six Nations high school, a language and culture centre, new playgrounds and funding for Kaweniio/ Gaweniiyo Highschool and the STEAM Academy — as well as adequate funding for proper staff and teachers.

The task force says they added into the cost analysis mental health workers at every school on a daily basis and other staff to provide support services to students in need.

According to Candlish attempts have been made since 1972 to create an independent education system at Six Nations but Ottawa was consistently coming up short financially and offering short term funding packages that wouldn’t guarantee the community’s needs would be met.

“It started with the Indian Control of Indian Education in 1972,” said Candlish. That assertion was made by the National Indian Brotherhood, now known as the Assembly of First Nations. “We wanted to bring up our children to know their culture, know their language and things like that,” said Candlish.

Ottawa’s reaction was to develop a devolution process, granting reserves in Canada a mechanism to claim administrative con-

OHSWEKEN —A core group of over 30 Haudenosaunee educators, researchers, and cultural advisors say they have a vision for what the future of education could look like at Six Nations of the Grand River.

The Life Long Learning Task Force was mandated to explore options and make recommendations to articulate what a new, wholistic and inclusive Six Nations led education system would look like — and now officials say they are looking to the federal government to fund it’s manifestation.

Julia Candlish, Education Manager for the Lifelong Learning Task Force at Six Nations gave details of that vision at the Six Nations Community Hall Thursday April 4 — as well as a bit of a history lesson on what Six Nations has done in the past to reclaim authority over education its own citizens.

Candlish was accompanied by four core task force members Elected Councillor and Task Force Chair Audrey Powless-Bomberry, I.L. Thomas principal Reva Bomberry, President of Six Nations Polytechnic Rebecca Jamieson and Haudenosaunee researcher Phil Monture.

According to Candlish, the task force compiled data collected over decades of failed negotiations with Ottawa to see Six Nations regain control over education — and put that together with new data collected in two new studies in 2018 to paint the picture of what kind of an education system people of Six Nations need and want and could have.

OHSWEKEN — Michelle Farmer’s Studio of Dance & Modelling Senior Competitive Team hit the Showstoppers Regional Dance Competition in Sandusky, Ohio this weekend.

Dancers travelled to the Kalahari Resort to bring back a historic win in all categories.

The Junior Dance Team took First Place Platinum in Tap and Jazz as well as First Place overall for Tap and Jazz.

Studio director Michelle Farmer gushed about the win on a Facebook post saying “They not only made Top 10 Overall in their age category, they took the Top 2 spots!!! Their tap & jazz dance had the top two scores out of all the genres

We can’t wait for permission Last week Six Nations held a community meeting to give details on the research and vision for the future of education at Six Nations. The full details are on our story on page 3. But there was an invigorating exchange that can’t be left out, and I feel is something that deserves this platform.

One community member was in the audience and asked the Lifelong Learning Task Force if they had engaged the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in their research on language and culture aspects of the future of education at Six Nations. According to officials with the task force, several invitations to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs have been met with silence and no official representation or response.

One task force member answered the question. Her name is Reva Bomberry and is the principal at I.L. Thomas School — one of Six Nations Cayuga immersion schools.

Her response was beautiful.

“I think we all know that we’ve tried. This community is divided.

I always say we can’t give up hope.

We need both parties to work together. We certainly will benefit from both parties working together. When it comes to language and culture, I’m a confederacy supporter. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t have any say on what goes on in our community. And I think all of us, no matter what, if we live in this community — then we have a say. We can speak on behalf of the language and culture. So I say that the invitation is always

open, and we can’t wait. We can’t wait to have permission to speak for language and culture. We have to do it ourselves. We have to be sure that we speak for our own children and if we don’t speak, who is going to speak for us?”

Bomberry went on to say, "I believe that we as parents, as teachers, as community members need to move forward. We need to have input and we need to have a say. We don’t have to belong to the confederacy. We don’t have to belong to the council in order to say what we think and feel and believe when it comes to language and culture because we all live it.

To some degree some of us more, some of us less. But I alway ssay we can’t give up hope. We can’t give up hope that the traditional community will help move forward and stand together in what we believe. And if we don’t have language we don’t have an argument. I think we all need to remember that.”

Her answer was so empowering. We all have a say. While indigenous knowledge keepers do bear some of our stories and history — we still all have a voice, and thoughts and ideas about what we want, and the kind of Haudenosaunee people we want our coming faces to be able to become.

These are now my words: if the Chiefs Council cannot find common ground with Haudenosaunee people of varying backgrounds about the future of this community — the coming faces should not be the ones to suffer. We cannot, and should not have to wait.

A response from the Arena Committee This letter was submitted to the Two Row Times and has been edited solely for grammar, thus the opinions and words therein are not a reflection of this publication.

A message to all: The men and women who participated in building the arena spent their time and energy to make life better on the reserve, passionately striving to instil confidence and give hope to the younger generation. It enables us to withstand the slurs and put-downs we encounter each day knowing it’s not true.

Many of our local athletes have been given praise and awards above and beyond what our community can provide. Why then should you take the only building that truly belongs to all of the people at Six Nations and name it for one person? Through the sacrifice of their blood, sweat and tears, the builders are entitled to keep their given name for the arena. There are many buildings on the reserve that are Band owned which do not hold the same sense of personal ownership by the people. Some buildings already bear the names of significant individuals, some others do not. Take one of those if you need a building to attach a name to. Just return our community name to the arena our community built on their own dime in their own time, with their own hands.

I believe that The Band Council of 2001 made a decision in response to an emotional request when they renamed our arena. Apparently, they did not know the history of the building that stood as The Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre for

twenty-nine years. They were seemingly unaware of the way that any individual could display their awards with a show case, plaque or trophy inside of the building. They chose to ignore the established plan of the arena committee.

With regards to naming the arena, we chose to abide by our Haudenosaunee cultural values and beliefs. It is not our way to aggrandize an individual by naming our building after one person. This was made clear by all the participants on the arena committee

who believed in “The Great Law.” Therefore an all-inclusive name was chosen by the arena committee in 1972 and a Band Council resolution was passed to confirm that name as The Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre. Let that name continue to stand in tribute to the arena builders, a reminder of our Haudenosaunee cultural values and beliefs and the togetherness that our community is capable of.

Report about violence against Vancouver`s Downtown Eastside women calls for change CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER — A group on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside says Indigenous women need to be included in leadership and decision-making positions in governments and other organizations if violence against women is going to stop.

It's one of 35 key recommendations made in Red Women Rising: Indigenous Women Survivors in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The report was released by the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre on Wednesday.

Co-author Harsha Walia said that although the report is based on input from 113 Indigenous and 15 non-Indigenous local women, it shouldn't be considered in isolation. ``Even though this work is located very much in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, we're very clear that it's located in the context of colonization across these lands,'' Walia said. ``Our most pressing recommendation that all 128 collaborators and participants were unanimous on was active Indigenous women's leadership in all

levels of decision making and full Indigenous jurisdiction over Indigenous lands and services and laws,'' she said.

Walia said that would mean the full adoption of the United Nation's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

Other recommendations include safe housing for every single Indigenous women on and off reserve, an end to all child apprehensions, a slew of legislative reform, and the establishment of an Indigenous women's centre on the Downtown Eastside run by and for women.

The 220-page report comes as the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is expected to release its own final report this month.

Inquiry chief commissioner Marion Buller had requested a two year extension last year, but the federal government allotted six months.

The Vancouver women's centre has standing in the inquiry and is submitting the report to the inquiry for consideration.

Walia said the report is unprecedented because it is rooted in the experiences of women on the Downtown Eastside, the neighbour-

hood where serial killer Robert Pickton found many of his victims.

She said the report also looks at a range of issues beyond physical violence: from housing and poverty to policing and child apprehensions.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs says the report is ``timely,'' as it comes the day after former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould, who is Indigenous, was ejected from the Liberal caucus.

Reconciliation has to come from the grassroots up and not the top down, he said, which is why the recommendations of a report based on contributions from so many women on the Downtown Eastside should be taken seriously.

Several of the report contributors said they don't know what to expect from the national inquiry, but it's important for the recommendations to be concrete and not abstract, and for the federal government to actually act on them instead of allowing them to gather dust on a shelf.

Sophie Merasty, a Cree contributor to Red Women Rising, said she doesn't expect an overhaul of the system to occur overnight, but she expects legal changes.

NANTICOKE — Just one year after the Nanticoke Generating Station site was demolished, a new solar facility has opened and is fully operational.

Six Nations of the Grand River has partnered with Ontario Power Generation and the Mississaugas of the Credit Fist Nation on Nanticoke Solar — a 44 megawatt solar power generating site.

"Investment opportunities, such as the Nanticoke Solar Project, are direct contributors to the Six Nations Economic Development Trust which provides critical funding used to address our Community's needs and priorities," said Elected Chief Ava Hill of the Six Nations of the Grand River.

"We are committed to investing in sustainable partnerships that deliver not only economic benefits but also employment & training opportunities to our beneficiary – the Six Nations Community," said Hilary Visheau, Chair of Six Nations Grand River Development Corporation's Advisory Committee.

"The Mississaugas of

the Credit First Nation hail this partnership as an important economic development," Mississaugas Chief Stacey Laforme said.

"This is a very positive development for MCFN. Gone are the days when our First Nation suffered the burdens of the development of our territory without sharing in the benefits. This project, along with others, sets the stage for future mutually-beneficial partnerships with OPG and others about developments across our territory. We look forward to working with OPG as partners in this project as it moves ahead."

This is the fourth First Nation partnership for OPG. PCL Construction was awarded the contract in March 2018 to instal solar panels at the site near Port Dover and Lake Erie.

"We've partnered with the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, on this important initiative," said OPG's Mike Martelli, President of Renewable Generation. "Building and sustaining a clean, low cost electricity system is fundamental to a healthy environment and a strong,

low-carbon economy. Nanticoke Solar is a continuation of OPG's rich legacy of generating electricity in this community."

The former coal burning Nanticoke Generating Station was closed in 2013. In 2014 Ontario became the first place in North America to eliminate coal for energy production.

Officials with OPG say the final demolition of the powerhouse at Nanticoke is scheduled for September 2019 with site restoration in 2020.

"Our company takes pride in all of the projects we build, and the Nanticoke Solar Facility is one of many exciting PCL-built projects in the rapidly growing sustainable energy sector," said Andrew Moles, PCL Construction's Director of Solar.

agreements in Manitoba, BC and Nova Scotia and Ontario — some under inherent rights policy and self governance agreements, some under regional education agreements and one is the establishment of a school board like entity under a program that the federal government had.

Tougher laws needed to police cultural appropriation in fashion, study says CANADIAN PRESS

WATERLOO — A global think tank is calling for tougher intellectual property laws that would protect Indigenous arts and traditions from cultural appropriation in the fashion industry.

A new report from the Centre for International Governance Innovation says traditional cultural expressions ``are undeniably'' forms of intellectual property but are largely excluded from existing protections offered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The study's Canadian author Brigitte Vezina says ``there is a grey zone between harmful misuse and permissible inspiration,'' making it very difficult to assess when something has crossed the line. ``It is urgent. We don't see any other way to put an end to cultural appropriation,'' says the Montreal-born Vezina, an international law consultant in The Hague and previously a legal officer at WIPO. ``Copying traditional design motifs without consent can erode a community's identity and cause profound harm.''

As defined by the Geneva-based WIPO, traditional cultural expressions include patterns, motifs

and other design features created by traditional or Indigenous cultures.

Vezina says copyright laws demand a certain threshold for a work to be considered original _ a threshold most traditions fail to meet because they are often passed down through generations. ``From a copyright standpoint, traditional cultural expressions are considered to be in the public domain and that makes them freely available for anyone to use,'' says Vezina, adding that also makes them vulnerable to misuse.

Her report, Curbing Cultural Appropriation in the Fashion Industry, points to examples that include Nike workout leggings for women in 2013 that featured a traditional tattoo for Samoan men. A public outcry forced Nike to pull the leggings from sale and apologize, but they said no offence had been intended. ``The problem is everything has to be done through social pressure nowadays because the legal basis does not exist,'' adds Vezina, urging more public awareness on the issue but also greater industry sensitivity. ``A lot of designers claim innocence or that they didn't know that they were doing anything wrong. Often it's true, it's unwilling and it might be out of ignorance but

there's also a lot of work that needs to be done to make sure that designers should be aware that it's not OK.'' She notes that successful collaborations abound when the source material is acknowledged and respected.

They include the high-fashion Brazilian label Osklen, which drew inspiration for its spring 2016 collection in the tattoos and traditional fabrics of the Ashaninka people, an Indigenous tribe living in the Amazonian rainforest of Brazil

and Peru.

The label asked permission and paid the tribe an agreed-upon equivalent of US$50,000, some of which funded a new school and a store where the tribe could sell artisanal jewelry and clothing.

While misuse can be an economic blow to a community, Vezina says the social and cultural impact can be far greater _ ``it can erode their sense of belonging within their community and their sense of identity.''

Vezina says the definition of cultural appropri-

ation is ``fluid'' but she identifies three characteristics: a change of cultural context, a power imbalance between the taker and the holder, and the absence of the holder's involvement.

She's also come up with four questions that can help determine whether something crosses the line or not: Does it understand and respect the community? Does it merely replicate the work or actually transform it into something new?

Does it acknowledge and attribute the community

that served as inspiration?

Does it include authorization and even collaboration of the source community or communities?

A WIPO intergovernmental committee has been working on developing a legal framework since 2000, adds Vezina.

But she says it's a long process that is entirely in the hands of member states, which include Canada.

The Centre for International Governance Innovation is a non-partisan think tank based in Waterloo.

EDMONTON — Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley says she expects Ottawa to approve the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion to the west coast by the end of May. In a election campaign stop with energy workers in Edmonton, she said the province is nearer than ever to getting the pipeline. ``We are this close, this close to getting that pipeline back under construction,'' Notley said Monday. ``In fact, we expect an approval from the federal government by the end of next month.''

government is making good progress on those consultations. ``It's not like the federal government is calling me up saying, 'Hey, we are going to do this' because they are not and I am not here saying that,'' said Notley. ``What I am telling you is that public opinion is fully behind it, that the recommendations of the NEB have addressed all of the issues ... the position of the industry here and the fact it's paired with an emissions cap in the oilsands — all of these things address all of the critical objections that have been made in the past. ``We've got growing support from Indigenous groups across this province and into B.C. who

want in on the pipeline deal. There is just a growing level of support.''

Notley said about seven in 10 Canadians now support the project because they understand it would support jobs and a strong economy.

She said that if her party were to be re-elected on April 16, she would continue to stand up for Alberta's energy industry. ``I am willing to bet my political future on it,'' she said. ``We're going to get this pipeline built and, when it happens, it will be the first pipeline to tidewater in over 60 years.

Albertans need to have faith that we will get this done.''

Jason Kenney suggested that Notley has foolishly tied Alberta's fortunes to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government by introducing a carbon tax.

In return, Kenny said, Trudeau has hindered Alberta's bedrock industry with a ban on tankers off the northern B.C. coast and proposed legislation that Kenney says could hinder approvals for future energy projects.

Kenney said Trudeau has also bungled the Trans Mountain expansion to get more Alberta oil to the B.C. coast. The project has been delayed by court challenges and rulings.

The federal government stepped in last year to buy the project to help ensure it gets built.

OTTAWA — The Saskatchewan Health Authority is investigating a new complaint from an Indigenous woman who alleges she was coerced into sterilization after giving birth less than four months ago.

The woman's lawyer spoke before the Senate committee on human rights in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Alisa Lombard says her 30-year-old client was scheduled to have a caesarian section to deliver her third child at the Moose Jaw hospital in December.

Lombard says the woman wanted more children and had never talked about tubal ligation until her doctor demanded she sign a consent form while she was on the operating table.

A proposed class-action lawsuit was later filed and the law firm leading the case has said 100 women have come forward alleging they were forcibly sterilized.

Indigenous Music Awards stands by nomination in face of boycott CANADIAN PRESS

The Indigenous Music Awards says it will work to address cultural appropriation concerns in response to a boycott by several Inuit artists, but the nomination at the centre of the controversy will stand.

The organization says it has proceeded with due diligence since objections were raised about the nomination of a non-Inuit musician whose songs heavily feature throat-singing, a traditional vocal performance unique to the Inuit.

Inuit throat-singers Tanya Tagaq, the duo PIQSIQ and Kathleen Merrit, who performs under the name Iva, were among the artists who pledged to not participate in the awards until organizers took steps to address the issue of cultural appropriation.

Over the weekend, A Tribe Called Red joined the call to boycott the awards posting to their Facebook page that they were pulling out of the show in solidarity with the position of the Inuit artists and in response to what they said was a poor response from the IMAs.

As the artist backlash rippled across social media, the IMAs announced plans to add an Inuit representative to its board of governors and develop a policy on cultural appropriation.

But after consulting the awards committee, elders and Inuit representatives, the board of governors says it decided to uphold the contentious nomination based on the current rules and regulations.

It noted that the nomination is for best folk album, and not in the best Inuit, Indigenous language or Francophone album category. ``We don't presume to agree or disagree on this matter at this time,'' the IMAs said in a statement Tuesday. ``It requires great reflection, ceremony and discussions on how we move forward in a good way, to ensure that we as Indigenous people uphold our teachings, and do not provide a platform for negativity and separation.''

A spokesman said the IMAs would not comment further.

The awards ceremony is to be held in Winnipeg on May 17 as part of the annual Manito Ahbee Festival.

CHICAGO — The Art Institute of Chicago has indefinitely postponed a major pottery exhibit weeks before it was due to open, citing concerns that the culture and voices of indigenous peoples aren't adequately represented.

Some Native American scholars complained that much of the Mimbres pottery pledged by a Chicago collector to the Art Institute had come from ancestral gravesites.

The Art Institute said in Monday's news release that the delay came after officials were given feedback about the need to collaborate with ``Native American nations who hold connections to the Mimbres people.'' ``Worlds Within: Mimbres Pottery of the Ancient Southwest'' was scheduled to begin May 26. The exhibit displays roughly 70 pieces of pottery from the Mimbres people. The pottery was created around A.D. 1100 in present-day southwestern New Mexico.

SEATTLE — Federal officials are supporting a decadeslong request by a Native American tribe in Washington state to resume what would be the only authorized whale hunts in the mainland U.S., a long-held custom that animal rights activists oppose as outdated and cruel.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Thursday announced its proposal to allow the Makah tribe to hunt one to three Eastern North Pacific grey whales annually over a 10-year period off the Washington coast. Tribes in Alaska and

The tribe, based about

120 miles (193 kilometres) northwest of Seattle along the Olympic Peninsula, has historically hunted whales and harvested those that wash ashore. It's a centuries-old tradition for the Makah people, who say it's a cultural, spiritual and subsistence need that's been limited for nearly 100 years.

Makah Tribal Councilman Patrick DePoe said the vast majority of the 2,800 members _ including 1,100 who still live in the area — want to return to their native diet by reintroducing whale meat and blubber. ``This is laying out a path of healing for my community and is going to be healing for future generations,'' DePoe said.

Quarter finals for the mens division of the Arena Lacrosse League began Saturday, April 6 with match ups between the Toronto Monarchs and the Oshawa Outlaws, the Whitby Steelhawks and the Peterborough Timbermen and the Six Nations Snipers and the Paris RiverWolves taking place at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.

The matches were streamed on YouTube as the six teams began

brawling for semi-final spots. To start, the Outlaws came out on top of a close game with the Monarchs 14 -12 after being tied for half of the last quarter. For the second match and in an unexpected win, the Steelhawks throttled the Timbermen 12 - 7 with seven consecutive goals in the final quarter. As or the home team from Six Nations, unfortunately the Snipers were snuffed out by the RiverWolves 20 - 11, with a great showing by Travis Longboat (3g,1a), Spencer Pyke (2g,4a) and Sam Bradman (2g).

As the semi-finals and

consequent championship will be held at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena this Saturday and Sunday, the Steelhawks will meet with the Shockwave at 4p.m., and the Outlaws will meet with the RiverWolves at 7p.m., on Saturday.

At the other side of the league, the women’s division will crown a new champion to succeed the defending Lady Snipers on Sunday.

All four teams will meet in a one-game knockout format from April 13 to 14 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena with matches between the Lady Snipers and Shockwave at noon

Men's snipers got beat out. The Women's Snipers are left to defend their title from last year.

The Lady Snipers captured the first league title last year, which was played with only three competing teams. This year, Lady RiverWolves and Shockwave ended the regular season with identical 10-2 records, splitting their four games. The final ALLW Cup Championship will take place at noon on Sunday.

Thus the Lady Snipers will have to put the work in to continue defending their league title-ship.

Gaylord Powless Arena Facts

By TRT Staff SIX NATIONS — The arena that stands at the heart of Ohsweken was originally named the Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre with a name change in 2001 to the Gaylord Powless Arena and renovations in 2005.

Within the lobby of the arena sits trophies and plaques, medals and mementos of athletic achievement earned by the young and mature athletes of Six Nations, whom the arena was constructed for.

The construction of the arena began in 1972 with the erection of the steel base in August and opening of the building on May 24 of 1973.

The arena committee was a generation of community members living as the generation of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and the arena was built off of an accumulation of ticket sales, fundraising and a

monetary grant from the Minister of Indian Affairs.

The seating capacity of the arena includes 648 seats and room for 200 individuals to stand; with year-round sports accommodations for seasonal sports such as lacrosse, hockey and figure skating.

Notable achievements of the arena including hosting the Little NHL Hockey Tournament in 1985, the All Nations Lacrosse Tournament in 1999, the Legends Cup Lacrosse Tournament since 2002, and the Six Nations Midget Hockey Team exhibition game versus Sweden in 2003. The arena is also home to 2015 Senior ‘B’ Champions of the Presidents Cup, the Six Nations Rivermen.

It is also home to the Six Nations Minor Lacrosse League and Six Nations Minor Hockey Association, of which over 200 young athletes participate at the provincial level yearly.

The trophy case at the GPA is like a small Hall of Fame for the great athlete's of the Six Nations.

In the evening of last Thursday, the Ontario Junior ‘C’ Lacrosse League (OJCLL) posted an announcement to their Facebook page regarding the Six Nations Junior ‘C’ Warriors.

The post read: “It was with extreme difficulty that Commissioner Reg Holinshead announced to the rest of the OJCLL this evening that the Six Nations Warriors would not be putting a team on the floor for 2019.”

The post included that several issues were of concern to the league executive and certain conditions couldn't be rectified in time to honour the schedule, leading to the announcement.

"We have had discussions over the last couple of days and some people have put in a lot of effort to rectify the situation but no settlement could be reached, unfortunately, so this is where we landed,” wrote Hollinshead in an

The teams in the Western conference will make up the games in a modified schedule that will allow the teams to complete 16 games. The playoff format will remain the same with one team not advancing to the post season with the other 6 battling it out for the right to represent the West in the Meredith Cup. In the beginning, Junior ‘C’ Lacrosse was first

sanctioned in Ontario in 1972 with a seven-team league that played a 20-game schedule and playoffs. After peaking in 1975 with 18 teams and three divisions, the league dissolved after the 1979 season with the pools of players moving into higher ranked leagues.

A rebooted OJCLL began operation in 2008 with five teams that included the Caledon Bandits, Center Wellington Warlords, Innisfil Wolfpack, Shelburne Vets, and the West Durham Patriots.

the first title in 2008 over Center Wellington. While in 2009 the league added three more teams from Kingston, Peterboro and Clarington. The Caledon Bandits would defend their title defeating Peterboro 3-1 in the final best of five. In 2010 the league saw the same teams, however the West Durham team would relocate to Whitby and a new champion would emerge in the Clarington Shamrox who would move on to earn three titles in a row.

The 2011 season saw a huge change in the league

as it expanded from 8 teams with the addition of Mimico, Halton Hills, Hamilton, Wilmot while eastern teams also came in with Cornwall, Brockville, Kahnawake, Nepean and Gloucester. The Huntsville Hawks would also drop down from Jr "B" to join the league with the Center Wellington Warlords switching owners and names and becoming the Fergus Thistles. Clarington Shamrox would take their second title with a win over Peterboro Lakers.

The 2012 campaign saw the league lose two eastern clubs after just one year as Nepean and Kahnawake did not return. Clarington would take their third title in a row over Halton Hills in the final.

While in 2013 the league would stay the same in the number of teams at 16, however there would be a new champion crowned as the Halton Hills Bulldogs took the title in an overtime thriller in Cornwall, defeating the three time champs from Clarington 11-10. It was the last year of the tournament format to crown a champion.

In 2014 the league lost one more eastern team as Brockville Ballistic stopped operations while the Oakville Hawks and the Six Nations Warriors came in. The league switched back to an East-West division format which saw the Cornwall Celtics defeat the defending champions from Halton Hills 3-0 to win their first title.

The 2015 season saw the Kingston Kings and Hamilton Bengals stop operations while one of the original franchises the Innisfil Wolfpack would see them move next door to become the Barrie Bombers. The Peterboro Lakers would take their first championship as they swept the Six Nations Warriors 3-0 to the league final after an exemplary second season for the Warriors. Steady growth over the years has seen the league grow in number of teams to 16.

The OJCLL opens with an exhibition tournament in Wilmot on Saturday, April 20th with the first league games going on Friday, April 26th.
