SIX NATIONS — The Six Nations Lady Snipers kicked off the Arena Lacrosse League (ALL) season on Saturday, January 18th with home wins against the St. Catharines Shockwave and Oshawa Outlaws. Starting what is the third season for women’s Arena Lacrosse League competition, the Snipers were playing at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena where they started the journey towards what they hope it an ALL Championship. When the league started in 2018, there were only three teams in the Riverwolves, Shockwave and Snipers competing.

Child sexual assault trial to begin in Wisconsin STAFF REPORT GREEN BAY, WI — A trial is slated to begin in Wisconsin for the sexual assault of a 14 year old child.

The accused, Matthew Joseph Myke, 36, is charged with Repeated Sexual Assault of Same Child / At Least 3 Violations of 1st or 2nd Degree in 2013.

Court documents show the alleged victim was 14 years old at the time of the assault.

He was released on a $10,000 cash bond and ordered to have no contact

BRANTFORD — On Wednesday, January 15, the screening of “Her Water Drum” in partnership with Wilfred Laurier University and the Friends & Neighbours of Save the Evidence, took place at the Wilfred Laurier University Campus.

Over 200 visitors packed into the auditorium to see the 15 minutes short film and experience the Q&A with filmmaker Jon Elliott shortly thereafter.

The emotionality of the topic was something that was warranted as the “Went to see Her Water Drum at Laurier tonight.

by Jon Elliott - see it if you get the chance,” posted Nicole Bouchard on Facebook on January 15.

And there has never been a better time for indigenous people to tell their own stories which is a sentiment that Tuscarora filmmaker Jonathan Elliott understood well when he ventured to capture a film he titled Her Water Drum.

The film deals with the topic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Canada, highlighting the impact that it has on individual families and their communities, something Elliott strove for.

“Using film, as not only an education tool, but as something to tell stories through is so important,” said Elliott, as he began to explain the topic of his film.

“It’s pretty hard to avoid the topic off Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls, and it is something that has been on my mind for a while because there’s so much stuff that you see in travelling around.”

As Sonia Bonspille-Boileau told the RDC in 2018: “Storytelling is an important way of keeping culture alive. There has been oral storytelling in Indigenous cultures for centuries, so it’s in the very fabric of our identity. But I feel like film is the ultimate storytelling vehicle, it encompasses all forms of transmission (visual, oral) making it a

pretty powerful way to share culture and express different points of view.”

And with the response from viewers, Elliott’s words of thanks were well deserved.

“I couldn’t be happier with how the screening of Her Water Drum put on by the Woodland Cultural Centre and Friends & Neighbours of Save The Evidence last night in Brantford,” wrote Elliott to Facebook.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of community support from Six Nations, Brantford and Hamilton we received as we had a packed house of nearly 250 people in attendance.”

“There was a very thorough Q+A afterwards and it was amazing to see people’s responses and connection to the piece as

a film but also an extension to the important conversations about the issue of MMIWG. It means so much to me that this support was there and people really connected to the project and learned from it.

Can’t give enough thanks to the organizers Layla Black and Carley Gallant-Jenkins for inviting us out and to the amazing cast and crew who brought the film to life. I was so happy to have Nadia George and Michael Riley there to receive the deserved praise from the audience and be able to talk about the film as well,” finished Elliott to Facebook after the screening.

Elliott told audiences to “stay tuned” for further screenings of the film close to home in Six Nations and Brantford.

Internet provider says A6N should replace severed line NAHNDA GARLOW

OHSWEKEN — First Nations’ Cable operator Jeff Thomas says the fibre optics line running from his head office through to Ohsweken needs to be replaced — and says Aecon-6Nations should be the ones to pay for it.

On January 3, A6N workers accidentally severed the cable for the third time. The service was out for six days, with full services being restored to all customers by January 10.

“That cable has been in the ground for over 15 years. It’s survived paving, ditches, gas upgrade, Bell upgrade, new hydro poles and we’ve never been hit.

These guys have been in here less than a year and they’ve hit it three times in one location within 100 feet of each other,” said Thomas.

Thomas says that incorrect information did not come from First Nations Cable, but says A6N was using the wrong map.

In a statement to his customers, Thomas said A6N was using a locate map detailing the corner of Generations Drive and Fourth Line near Highway 6 and not Lawrence Jonathan Drive and Fourth Line where they were

digging.

Thomas described the conversation between A6N employees and First Nations Cable technicians at the site. “He then told our tech that he screwed up and it was his fault. He did help us to widen and uncover both ends of the conduit, then left. Our tech evaluated the situation and started to get the materials together to make the repairs,” wrote Thomas.

Thomas says that A6N did not make a request for locates, and says the last

time locates were requested was a year ago.

A6N previously told TRT they offered to help repair the line but Thomas says that was not the case.

“They’ve never offered us any services. They did help us dig it out but they didn’t acknowledge they had a fibre splicing company that was available to them. I have a splicer here but I am the only one that can splice and I just came off operation so there was no way I can get anything.

It was an expense,” said Thomas.

He is now pursing an insurance claim for the incident but says the integrity of the line is now at risk because the three separate repair locations make the line susceptible to condensation or other environmental damage.

Now, he says, the whole line needs to be replaced.

“My name is everything.

I worked very hard. We take a lot of pride in the way we have things. We’re legit. We do everything ourselves,” said Thomas.

“To have this come back and somebody is saying bad things about us or trying to turn things around so that we’re the ones that are being blamed for all this stuff — it’s not right and it’s not something we’re prepared to accept.”

“They cut that line three times in the same area.

And every time it’s our fault? They are supposed to be professionals, you own up to your mistakes,” said Thomas.

“They’re trying to do too much too fast. They’ve got so many jobs to do and cover so many feet per day.”

Thomas has worked in utilities for the last 40 years — he started First Nations Cable in 1992 and was the very first on-reserve Indigenous owned cable and internet provider in all of Canada.

Thomas says this is the 28th year they have been in service and says the company has independently grown to offer internet speeds that are 10 times faster than when

they first began.

Thomas says he would like to see a greater resolution to the problem and says local utility companies in the community now require a utilities board to improve communications.

“I’d like to see all the utility companies meet a few times a year and bring all the new projects in and everyone talks procedures,” said Thomas.

“When I worked in Dundas and Stoney Creek I sat on a Utility Board up there it was so much easier everyone knew what every one else was doing.”

“In other communities there is a common trench shared by all the utilities: Hydro, Bell, Cable and Internet are all shared and we have a set location and everyone knows where that location is,” said Thomas.

A6N’s parent company, Six Nations Development Corporation was contacted for comment. They did not respond by press time.

Profit from soil dumping on Six Nations

By TRT Staff SIX NATIONS — On Monday morning, dump trucks transporting soil to a location on First Line Road were stopped by Six Nations Police.

Allegedly, the trucks had been dumping soil from the GTA area, as part of an agreement made between an individual that holds title to the land at the First Line address.

However, a local resident recovered a sample, saying that the soil itself smelled like “petroleum product” and called into Six Nations Lands and Membership.

The resident found that the land has been under the name of a different individual that passed away in 1988. It was later noted that the land has thus been in dispute between two families since the ’60’s, as both claim to have bought the land.

This means that dumping soil at the location and being paid to allow it is a situation that can grow to become even more of a dispute. But similar trucks that were stopped on Monday that were also carrying

soil have been talk of the community.

On Tuesday, the Six Nations Community Bulletin Board Facebook page opened for discussion as a poster under the name of ‘A. I. Martin’ inquired about 15 trucks leaving Six Nations on Second Line.

“They were escorted off for trying to illegally dump again,” wrote a commenter under 'Dan N Tanya Montour.’ “I sat at the corner and watched them go through too. I did see, about a hour later, four trucks parked at new credit plaza. They probably had someone scramble around looking for somewhere else to dump because they didn’t wanna take it back Toronto area. I’m thankful for these interest groups who kick them off , if we didn’t have them the rez’ would be full of Toronto area garbage, ugh.”

As commenters noted that clean fill would be great for certain terrains, others noted that ‘if it was clean they would be selling it in’ the GTA area that the soil comes from.

The province will introduce legislation to

stiffen penalties for illegal soil dumping, says Donna Skelly, PC MPP for Flamborough-Glanbrook. That includes forcing developers to register how they'll get rid of excess dirt, and doubling fines to $200,000 for environmental infractions.

In May of 2019, dirt dumping became a long-standing problem in rural Hamilton, and the city called for tougher provincial laws several years ago. The problem reaches Glanbrook, upper Stoney Creek and Ancaster — but especially Flamborough.

Each are near and distant neighbours to Six Nations.

And the fills that come from GTA construction projects, including condo and road projects, often load soil that isn't tested, so no one really knows what's in it.

But still, contractors in the GTA have nowhere to put their mounds of dirt, so fill brokers approach and offer to get rid of it.

These brokers then arrange trucks to take loads of it, then landowners are paid to take it.

Fill brokers can make upwards of $1 million a year.

Reporting on child abuse

By TRT Staff Considering that the majority of the public gathers its knowledge about sexual assault from the media, it is important to present accurate information about it.

Since child abuse became a national issue 40 years ago, the media has played a major role in directing public attention to it. But media publicity about child abuse and child victimization runs the risk of adding to the substantial burden child victims already carry.

Theories about victimization trauma, research about recovery, developmental thinking about the emotions, and modern practices in the fields of criminal justice and journalism all suggest that publicity about an ordeal may increase a victims’ feelings of shame and stigmatization.

This can push victims to not wish to come forward.

Thus enters the publication ban: the media is constitutionally entitled to publish information about court cases, but there are exceptions to this right. The court may and at certain times, must, impose publication bans to protect the fairness and integrity of the case, the privacy or safety of a victim or witness, or the identity of a child or youth.

A publication ban prevents the complainant or witness’ identity from being published in print or being broadcast on television, film, or radio.

There are various sections in the Criminal Code that allow for bans on publication. There are also serious consequences for breaching publication bans.

This is where the supposed bias and unethicality for our readers may lie —

believing that we are only telling one side of the story.

But this isn’t so: we want to provide fact based information, but cases that involve children and youth can only be presented based on the information we are allowed to offer. This includes media information and press releases forwarded to us by police departments.

In recent decades, the ethics of crime reporting and being sensitive to crime victims’ needs and concerns have increased in commentary. The issue of addressing victims’ right to privacy has been the topic of books and ethical codes and guidelines have been written to increase journalists’ sensitivity in such cases. There seems to be some consensus in the field that the privacy of certain types of victims in particular should be protected, such as sexual assault victims and children, at least in most circumstances.

In a 1990 survey, for example, 10 per cent of newspaper editors thought rape victims’ names should never be printed, 40 per cent thought names should be printed only with victims’ permission, and 44 percent believed names should only be printed in exceptional cases.

Canadians in general appear to have only limited knowledge on sexual abuse cases as well, which was seen in a study conducted by the Department of Justice Canada that showed that the media ranks among the most important means by which the public finds out about victim services, with 36% of those surveyed stating that they learned about such services through the radio or television and 27% through newspapers.

These findings mean that

the media carries a lot of responsibility when it comes to publicizing a sexual abuse story.

So when the names of child victims and other identifying information appear in the media it can exacerbate trauma, complicate recovery, discourage future disclosures and inhibit cooperation with authorities for the child or children involved.

“It was just really hard to hold your head up, even to walk outside with everyone almost in the world knowing what happened … I shouldn’t care what people think or say. It’s just the fact that everyone knows I’m the kid,” said David Ritcheson, reported

by The Associated Press in July of 2007.

As for the impact of publicity when bad things happen to people, most people would prefer to avoid the limelight. Perhaps because discomfort with such exposure is assumed, no research has actually been done to verify how child victims react under the glare of publicity. However, research from a number of related sources leads to the conclusion that the impact is primarily negative and with publication bans, children are protected in a way that many are not.

In conclusion, when a person of high moral standing, or a person that sits in a position of power within a community is charged with abuse allegations, it is common practice for police departments to issue a warning or media release to the supporting community.

This then becomes the responsibility of any linked media outlet to inform the people and the courts duty to protect the child involved.

Allegations about harassment, abuse and discrimination in hockey have rocked the sport over the past few weeks.

If there are mechanisms in place to help address hockey's toxic culture — including initiating an independent third-party investigation — then shouldn't we be talking about how to put these policies into effect and how to improve their effectiveness?

Commonly thought of as the connective tissue bonding Canadians: claims of abuse, discrimination and harassment have revealed hockey as a blunt instrument that tears this connective tissue apart.

When the highly successful, historic and Indigenous-led Beardy's hockey program was phased out of the Saskatchewan landscape, Indigenous and non-Indigenous players were denied valuable opportunities to interact and participate in intercultural exchange through sport.

When former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters, then a coach for the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL, used the N-word when dealing with a Black player, he did so because his career has existed within a racially homogenized, insulated

environment. Peters was once recognized as one of Hockey Canada's preferred coaches at the international level, coaching the Canadian under-18s, the World Championships and an assistant coach at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. This culture sheltered him from the consequences of using hateful language.

And, following years of making xenophobic comments during the Coach's Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada, longtime hockey commentator Don Cherry insinuated in a pre-Remembrance Day broadcast that immigrants were not grateful for the sacrifices of Canadian veterans.

These recent incidents are a part of hockey culture.

It's easy to focus on coaches as individuals. They serve as the de facto child and youth care workers, teachers and caregivers all rolled into one. Still, we cannot blame coaches any more than teachers should be the only ones held accountable for unethical classroom conduct.

The need for oversight in organized sport has never been more apparent, especially in the wake of numerous scandals in the NCAA. Consider Penn State and Michigan State's sexual abuse scandals.

Certainly the new safe sport policies for Canada have yet to be tested and, indeed, have some serious imperfections to work out.

Thankfully, there are indications from government that its intent is genuine. For example, it may withhold funding if a sport organization does not implement ``specific measures'' to ensure compliance with the policies.

Still, other indicators are cause for concern. The

independent third-party investigation option is available as a pilot project and closes March 2020. Can enough reliable evidence be collected in less than one year about these complex issues?

Troublingly, the safe sport policies deal almost exclusively with accountability measures for catching offenders. There is almost no emphasis on helping victims come forward and heal their wounds in a safe and respectful environment.

The disregard for their health and safety is similar to the lack of supports proposed for professional hockey players. In the wake of the Peters and Cherry scandals, the NHL recently instituted a ``mandatory annual program on counselling, consciousness raising, education and training on diversity and inclusion for head coaches and general managers.'' Similar to the safe sport policies in Canada, there appears to be no support for the victims, in this case, the professional players.

Certainly, harassment, abuse and discrimination in hockey are not exclusively the NHL's problem. The Graham James abuse scandal from within Canadian junior hockey serves as a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of minors in Canada's hockey system. As the world's largest and most lucrative hockey organization, the NHL could require its affiliates to adopt safe sport policies similar to those being enforced in Canada.

The NHL generated US$5.09 billion in revenue during the 2018/19 year. If the NHL decided to finance the implementation of the safe sport policies for hockey, it would account for 0.12 per cent of their 2018/19 revenue.

PBS show “Molly of Denali,” captures hearts

By TRT Staff, with notes from the Associated Press Released last summer, “Molly of Denali” is a series that follows 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl from the fictional village of Qyah, and her family, friends Tooey Ookami and Trini Mumford, her dog Suki, and other residents.

Her family runs the Denali Trading Post.

The aesthetic of the show could be compared to “Dora the Explorer,” as the American-Canadianimated television series was created and produced by Atomic Cartoons and WGBH Kids that premiered on July 15, 2019 for PBS Kids and CBC Television.

Charitie Ropati watched the pilot episode of ``Molly of Denali'' in her Columbia University dorm room, huddled around a computer screen with friends. ``We were crying,'' Ropati said. ``We realized we finally had positive representation.'' ``Molly of Denali'' is the first cartoon series with an Alaska Native character as the lead. It premiered nationwide on PBS Kids in July.

For many, it is more than a cartoon. ``Watching the show is a way for my Native friends and I to bond,'' said 18-yearold Ropati, Yup'ik, who had just moved to New York City from Anchorage and was feeling homesick when the pilot aired. ``PBS did such a good job. It is like my siblings, Native youth and myself can see ourselves in it.’'

The series, in its first season, has Indigenous input at all levels of production, Indian Country Today reported. It includes 38 episodes, a podcast series and a collection of paper-

back books.

Dorothea Gillim is the series' executive producer, a position she also held on ``Curious George.'' After working in the industry for many years, she says this program is special. ``I've never worked on a show where people tear up on a regular basis,'' Gillim said.

Gillim says she recently heard about a non-Native family who wanted to make a trip to Alaska after watching the show. They called the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce to learn more about Alaska Native languages to prepare for their trip.

Her job as executive producer is multifaceted.

She raises money for the show while leading a closeknit team. And she was also involved at the earliest moments of the show to choose writers, producers, animators, and voice actors.

One of the talents she gathered was Princess Johnson, Neets'aii Gwich'in.

Johnson is the creative producer of ``Molly of Denali.’'

Part of Johnson's job is to advocate for Indigenous representation at every level of the creative process.

This means making sure things are done ``right'' in every episode, interstitial (a short-program shown between episodes that features Alaska Native children), online tools, games and podcast. She also ensures Alaska Natives are included as writers, actors and producers.

A job like this didn't always exist.

There are serious implications to many non-Native people creating media about Native people, a 2018 IllumiNative report says. ``The story they adopt is overwhelmingly one of deficit and disparity,'' the report

states. ``This narrative can undermine relationships with other communities of colour.’'

Many say ``Molly of Denali'' challenges that.

A goal of the series was to bring Alaska Native voices into all aspects of the production, both on and off camera. WGBH Boston developed the series with a working group of Alaska Native advisors and consultants; Princess Daazhraii Johnson (Neets'aii Gwich'in), producer and

Fairbanks resident, is creative producer of the series.

The show also features Alaska Native voice talent in key roles, including the lead role of Molly, as well as Alaska Native scriptwriters.

WGBH and its animation partner, Atomic Cartoons, hosted Alaska Native interns for production and animation roles.

The series was then developed with a group of over 60 established Alaska Native or Indigenous advisers. The advisers are

from every region of Alaska where the show takes place.

For every character that is Native, their voice actor is Native too.

Beyond this, there is also the fellowship program for Alaska Native writers.

Atomic Cartoons, the lead animation company of the series, holds internships for Alaska Natives.

Vera Starbard, Tlingit and Dena'ina, is a writer for ``Molly.'' She says she has worked on many artistic projects that involve Alaska

Native people. ``I've never experienced this level of dedication to getting it right,'' she said. ``Usually my job comes with emotional labour of having to educate others,'' Starbard said. ``This time ... my job is just to write.’'

Starbard says something surprising is how much work happens behind the scenes.

Molly of Denali, continued think of a potential story they pitch to a producer. If their pitch is accepted, they work through many rounds of edits. Writers must decide who the characters are, where the story takes place and what informational text will go into an episode. They have to write every word that a character speaks including where they chuckle or show forms of expression.

After a script is approved and ``polished,'' it is sent to directors and animators. ``And then I don't see the story again until it airs,'' Starbard says.

This entire process takes a while. Starbard's first episode took 18 months before it aired. Because the show is in its first season,

animators are tasked with creating entire new towns, characters and worlds.

Starbard has written four episodes so far. She says her life experiences inspire her story ideas. When writing ``New Nivagi,'' an 11-minute story that follows ``Molly'' while she gathers items to make her grandpa's secret ice cream recipe, she says it reflected an experience she knows.

Starbard grew up in Alaska and says she had to be ``pretty creative'' to make recipes because sometimes it is hard to find ingredients.

So she wrote an entire episode where ``Molly'' does the same.

Another time Johnson remembers being at a children's museum when

a mother said her son was showing interest in his Inupiaq culture because of the show. ``That is the ultimate goal,'' says Johnson. ``It is a joy to see that sort of reaction.''

And the reactions are from non-Native people too.

Johnson heard a story from a friend's son who watched the show and asked what an ancestor was.

Professionally, the opportunity to play a part in the production has opened doors for writers like Starbard. She says she was established in Alaska before ``Molly'' and now she's considered a national writer.

Starbard said: ``This is the definition of a once-ina-lifetime opportunity.''

Alberta's Northern Cree takes another shot at Grammy gold

By TRT Staff with notes from The Canadian Press TORONTO — When Northern Cree arrives dressed to impress at the Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday, they will be returning for the ninth time.

This year the 62nd GRAMMY Awards are right around the corner, airing January 26 on CBS and the Alberta's Indigenous singing group was nominated at music industry's biggest night, with co-founder Steve Wood saying he's planning a few surprises.

Among them, members of the 17-person act were set sport traditional Cree designs that could easily overshadow the edgy threads worn by Shawn Mendes and Lil Nas X.

``Even if you're famous, you don't want to be next to us on the red carpet,'' Wood says with a chuckle on the phone from Maskwacis, Alta.

Since the group's first nomination in 2001, the 58-year-old leader of Northern Cree has become somewhat of an expert in grabbing attention on the red carpet.

A couple years ago, the act wowed onlookers when they pulled up wearing vibrant beaded vests, a sharp break from the steady flow of black tuxedos and designer looks on the carpet. Northern Cree didn't win the Grammy that year, but they had everyone talking.

This year, they're nominated in the best regional roots category with their

40th album, ``When It's Cold - Cree Round Dance Songs,'' a collection of tracks that acknowledge the good times (``The Hippity Hoppity'') and the hardships (``To All MMIW,'' a tribute to missing and murdered Indigenous women).

Their Grammy category is stacked with other favourite contenders, including six-time Hawaiian nominee Amy Hanaiali'i and Rebirth Brass Band, a past winner from New Orleans. ``I like to get the music out in its original form,'' he says. ``When we hit those mainstream stages, the audience is in a little bit of awe until they can feel it. But when they feel it, it turns into a rock concert.''

HAGERSVILLE - The Six Nations Ladies Snipers couldn’t have asked for a more successful opening weekend performance.

In kicking off their 2020 Arena Lacrosse League (ALL) campaign, the Snipers generated lots of excitement when on Saturday, January 18th they entertained the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena fans by posting a 7-6 win against the St. Catharines Shockwave followed by a 10-4 decision against the Oshawa Outlaws.

“There is still work to be done,” Snipers coach Chris Hill said. “It was our first weekend back and we

were a little rusty. Today was mostly about conditioning and working on catching and passing.”

Riding the momentum of that opening game win against the Shockwave, Six Nations came out strong against the Outlaws as they got that pivotal opening goal which came from forward Brianna Trembley who was coming off a multi-goal performance against the Shockwave.

In what was shaping up to be a real old- fashioned goalies duel, Oshawa managed to tie things up with just under 90 seconds remaining in the first before Six Nations showed a flair for the dramatics when with 30 seconds remaining Hailee Johnson from the slot scored the go-ahead goal.

“We came together and our passes were there,” Johnson said.

The eventual turning point came in the third when Six Nations offence caught fire with five goals from Patricia Maracle with two along with Johnson and Skye both scoring their second in opening the game up for an 8-2 Snipers lead.

Continuing to generate some offensive excitement Six Nations reached double digits as they notched two fourth quarter goals from Trembley with her third followed by veteran Mekwan Tulpin as they officially start the Arena Lacrosse League season with consecutive wins.

OHSWEKEN--- The Six Nations Atom LL#2 team couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.

Coming into weekend action having lost two of their past three games, Six Nations fortunes took a sudden upward turn.

Starting on Saturday, January 18th, at the Gaylord Powless Arena, goaltender Jaidyn Henry was the story as she registered her second shutout in what

was a 2-0 win against the Waterford Wildcats 2. Riding the wave of confidence Six Nations travelled on Sunday to Norwich where they picked up another two points in what was a momentum swinging 5-4 victory.

“Happy,” is the word Henry used in describing her shutout against Waterford. When asked what she likes best about being a goalie, Henry responded, “It’s fun. I wanted to try it and I knew that I would like it.” Her shutout didn’t go unappreciated as she was named player of the

game.

Reflecting on her many saves, Henry, who is in her second year playing goal said that her favorite was, “The one that went off my shoulder.”

Waterford had some golden first period opportunities but it was Six Nations who found themselves leading as forward George Hill, parked in the slot got the crowd pumped up by scoring that first goal.

While Henry continued to shine in the second, Six Nations once again were generating chances and with a little over five minutes remaining in the second were rewarded with a huge insurance marker from Zachary Garlow which made it a 2-0 game.

Both teams had numerous opportunities in the third, but couldn’t capitalize as Six Nations went on to kick start their undefeated weekend with a Saturday afternoon win.

OHSWEKEN--- Slowing down the dynamic Six Nations Atom Rep offence is a monumental challenge for any team.

Riding a six- game winning streak which has seen them average nearly nine goals per game, the Midget Reps offence remained red hot as they were led on Sunday, January 19th by a dynamic four goal performance from Crosby Johns in a thrilling 7-2 OMHA second round series opening win at the Gaylord Powless Arena against the Waterford Wildcats.

“We wanted to get the jump on them right off the bat,” Six Nations coach Travis Anderson said. “I wanted them (Six Nations) to understand that it’s now OMHA, and if you get beat then you go home.”

an OMHA first round bye, made a bold statement when they certainly got that early jump as Johns got the G.P.A. faithful cheering when he scored his first goal 12 seconds into regulation. In terms of what his team did well in this series opener Johns paused before replying, “Passing and skating.” When asked what he likes best about hockey Johns, quickly smiled before stating, “It’s fun.”

As every hockey fan knows, a team must have

clutch goaltending to win championships and that’s certainly what the Atom Reps have in Hi:io Squire who continues each year to get better and better.

Minutes after Squire made some ten bell saves Six Nations generated some quality chances and right after Konnor Hill split the Waterford defence and nearly scored, it was Johns coming through on a rising wrist shot with his second goal.

“Growing up, I’ve just

really liked it,” Johns said about playing hockey.

In terms of his favourite hockey player he was quick to answer, “Eichel,” in reference to Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel.

Six Nations would generate some more first period quality chances but it was Waterford who were rewarded as they scored with just under five minutes remaining to split the deficit at 2-1 heading to the second period.

“The breakaway one,” Johns said about the favorite goal he scored. “That was fun.”

Waterford would respond with a late period goal before Six Nations answered back with Anderson’s second goal

to increase the lead to 7-2 after two periods of play.

“That goalie really played well,” Anderson said in reference to Waterford’s netminder. “Every player on our team played a complete game. We for-checked and backchecked really well.”

Not slowing down, Six Nations struck for two third period goals from Johns with his fourth and Konnor Hill as they went on to take that pivotal OMHA second round series opener against Waterford.

CHICAGO… No doubt it was an exciting moment for the Aboriginal People’s Network.

After negotiations with Sportsnet, an agreement was made last month to broadcast a total of six NHL games on the Network in Plains Cree language starting on Sunday, January 19th with Rogers Hometown Hockey.

That game, which saw the Chicago Blackhawks record a 5-2 home victory against the Winnipeg Jets was being broadcast on APTN by play by play announcers Clarence Iron and Earl Wood along with analyst John Chabot and Jason Chamakese.

The next APTN (Aboriginal People’s Television Network) game to be broadcast in Plains Cree will take place on Sunday February 9th when the Blackhawks visit the Jets.

“People are excited,” Iron said about the Plains Cree broadcast. “Even non-Aboriginal people are listening. It’s a high number and they tell me, Clarence, I didn’t know what you were saying but we did watch the whole game because you were exciting.”

Last year Iron was part of history when on March 24th he was part of the APTN broadcast crew for what was the Plains Cree called game which saw the Montreal Canadiens drop a 2-1 decision against the Carolina Hurricanes.

BRANTFORD - You can say that it’s been a smooth and successful transition for Assumption Lions Jr. basketball player Daelon Smith.

Since strapping on the Assumption uniform, this Grade 9 student/athlete has been getting more playing time during what was a regular season which saw them lose only one game.

“At the beginning I was a little nervous, but now I’m much more relaxed,” Smith said. In terms of what his team’s strengths are Smith quickly re-

sponded, “Shooting and passing.”

Finishing up the regular season Smith made his mark when on Thursday, January 16th, he came off the bench in the fourth and hit a three pointer in the Assumption gym in what was an eventual 7541 win against the North Park Trojans.

“We ran the floor well,” Smith said. Regarding what it would mean to win junior basketball OFSAA he stated, “It would mean a lot.”

As time ticked down in the first quarter, Assumption’s offence caught fire as they sunk 11 points in the final two and a half minutes which extended their lead from 13-8 to 24-10 heading into the second.

“We ran the floor well,” Smith said about what they did well.

Continuing to put up points, Assumption began taking total control as they started the second with six straight points and eventually increased the lead to 35-16 on route to a 42-21 halftime score.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter with

Assumption firmly in the driver’s seat with a 65-36 lead that Smith made his mark as he entered the game and seconds later dramatically hit that three-pointer.

“I’m getting some floor time. I’m not getting as much responsibility and it’s understandable,” Smith said about being a Grade 9 first year player.

“It’s (playing) a lot of fun.”

Smith also had a few offensive opportunities and drew an assist as Assumption finished off what was a dominating regular season with a dominating win against North Park.

Now it’s time for playoffs!!
