EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As we reflect upon 2014, we see a year that brought significant change to the organization while providing a clear road map to our future. We continue to be one of the region’s top destinations and an educational partner to many. The arrival of a new President and CEO in January helped lead to a year of growth and change. In addition to the successful science programs at the centre, the new leadership clarified our future as our entire team worked to create and commence the implementation of a five-year strategic plan. This plan will keep us following well-articulated goals focussed around an engaging visitor experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We also started the year with our new, fully-digital IMAX® Theatre. The new theatre, combined with the wildly popular film Jerusalem, attracted many new visitors. Having a digital theatre allowed us to introduce a broader range of films and maximize the usage of the theatre outside of the traditional operating hours. These new uses—like hosting a video game evening with the Edmonton chapter of ExtraLife—introduced, or in some cases re-introduced, an audience we had not significantly reached in years. Along those same lines, we made a commitment to a year filled with adult nights which we branded Dark Matters. These increasingly popular events help engage new audiences and serve as a great way to showcase science. Our track record of success and focussed strategic plan also enable us to best chart our future course as we look to expand the science centre in the years ahead. In December, the City of Edmonton recognized our commitment and objectives, and set in motion our expansion efforts as they agreed to fund $12 million toward our $40 million expansion which we call the Aurora Project. Connecting lives to science and encouraging lifelong exploration is our goal as we continue to grow. Our role in having a stronger, more scientifically literate community has never been more important, and one we take very seriously. We look forward to the coming years and serving

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS
The science centre was bustling with activity in 2014 as a variety of exhibition, programs, films and other special events worked in harmony to connect our guests with many aspects of science. In 2014 over 593,000 visitors enjoyed the many programs, films and events at the science centre. The year began with the continuation of Harry Potter: The Exhibition which averaged more than 1,000 guests per day during its run. The exhibition attracted many new guests which allowed us to connect them with many other areas throughout the science centre. Our newly renovated IMAX Theatre hosted National Geographic’s film Jerusalem and for more than a month our IMAX Theatre was the top performing theatre in the world for this film. Our science programs combined with Harry Potter and Jerusalem made the science centre a popular destination. Family Day weekend set new records as we served close to 16,000 guests over three days.

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS
We hosted a range of special programs throughout the year including drop-in weekend activities, demonstrations, sleepovers, and adult courses through Metro Continuing Education. We continued to partner with external groups like APEGA, the Chemical Institute of Canada, and the RASC to provide programming for National Science and Technology Week, the International Day of Astronomy, and Yuri’s Night celebrations. Our summer exhibition Wildlife Rescue and IMAX film Island of Lemurs: Madagascar provided a wonderful opportunity to engag e local organizations with Alberta-focused programming. With Wildlife Rescue, several biologists came in to share their research and our guests got to meet injured birds of prey, touch caribou antlers from Jasper National Park, and learn about wolves and cougars. Our partnership with the Edmonton Valley Zoo helped promote the IMAX film and build strong cross-promotion between our two local attractions. We also partnered with APEGA
K’NEX Thrill Rides
and inspired many future engineers with our concurrent summer exhibition K’NEX Thrill Rides.

The year also marked a commitment to establishing Dark Matters – our adults night at the science centre. We hosted nine Dark Matters events and attracted nearly 4,000 guests. The events varied in theme and included the TWOSE School of Witchcraft, Yuri’s Night, and Cowboys & Aliens. Each event saw TWOSE visitors interacting with local experts and organizations, learning science, and having fun! Indiana Jones: The Adventures of Archaeology opened in October and the team partnered with the Strathcona branch of the Archaeological Society of Alberta to run an adult-focused weekly lecture series beginning in the fall. Professional archaeologists were also on hand to celebrate International Archaeology Day in October.
