Swim Team News

The Windermere Waves are looking forward to an exciting 2019 summer season! The Windermere Waves swim team has begun planning for their 16th summer season. This is for all kids ages 5 to 18 (we do require swimmers to be able to swim one lap of the pool unassisted) and is a great way for our kids to stay active, improve their swimming skills and enjoy time with friends. The swim team is an 8 to 9 week program, beginning in early May. We also have our Ripples program for our 4 to 5 year olds (more of a beginner program with coaches in the water with them teaching them the basics – this program begins in late May and runs for 5 weeks). In addition to the practices, we are planning some fun activities, as well as continuing with fun Fridays, Swimmer of the Week, and fun themes for each swim meet. Practices will begin in early May and continue through June 28th. Meets are held at 5:30pm on Thursdays, with the first meet tentatively on May 30th and then each Thursday in June. We end the season with our biggest meet, the Forsyth County Meet, which will, tentatively, be held on Friday, June 28th at the GA Tech Natatorium. REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN ONLINE MARCH 1ST Registration fees include: kickoff celebration, end of season banquet and a swimmer’s t-shirt. Also, register before April 1st to avoid a $15 dues increase! Please see our website (www.windermerewaves.com) for all registration information as well as tentative practice schedules, volunteer positions and information about our Ripples program. PARENT MEETING/SUIT FITTING There will be a parent informational meeting & suit fitting in March at the Windermere Lodge (more details to come – look for resident email blast and also March newsletter). Spirit Wear will also be on sale. The online registration process will be reviewed along with all major topics. We encourage all parents to attend. Any questions contact Tanya Edwards at We are looking forward to a great season!!! GO WAVES!!! edwardstanya@bellsouth.net

Highway 20 Entrance Update A Message from HOA President Craig Holmes As I’m sure you’ve seen, Chattahoochee River Club has been making a significant investment in their entrance monuments. Here’s what we know: When the State made the decision to widen Highway 20, they needed some of CRC’s land. Our understanding is that the State paid over $200K for the land needed. CRC set that money aside, and then added an additional quarter million dollars to the project in order to construct their beautiful entrance monuments. So what about the Windermere monument that used to sit up there by Highway 20? Well, that monument sat on state-owned property. When the monument was put there in the early 2000s, the developer was told that when the state eventually widened Highway 20, the monument would be demolished and replaced with a pencil-thin median. Windermere HOA received no compensation at the time, since we didn’t own the land on which it sat, and frankly, didn’t have the right to have anything there to begin with. In fact, Windermere HOA doesn’t own any of the land between Highway 20 and the entrance to Edenham/Farrington. That said, we do have an easement on the properties on either side of Windermere Parkway where it ends at Highway 20, and have the right to maintain those areas. We can’t knock down any walls, but we do have the right to landscape the heck out of it. And the state has told us we can repaint the pole to a color that’s more aesthetically pleasing if we want to pay for it. We have had some discussions with the County to see if we can get any money from our County Commissioner’s beautification budget to help us fund our efforts. Unfortunately, the County is pretty resistant to contributing any money to our project. Our Commissioner has a philosophical problem contributing money that benefits a single neighborhood. For example, the County didn’t contribute anything to the CRC entrance. She points out that in District 5, there are three entrances into Forsyth County, and she believes that her portion of the beautification budget is best spent closer to the borders, and in the Highway 20 medians. I think we can all agree that something needs to be done in that blighted area where Chang’s Package and the pinestraw trailers sit. In short, she doesn’t want to give money that benefits only one neighborhood – she is more interested in beautifying the whole of Hwy 20. As an aside, we also have serious issues with the overabundance of trees in the Windermere Parkway median as well. Many of you have likely noticed that they don’t leaf properly – that’s because their roots are choking each other. Most of these were planted when the developer still ran the community. The HOA will need to make a decision to either (a) thin the herd, or (b) take them all out and more wisely choose our median’s plantings, perhaps looking more like the medians as they pass through James Creek and Three Chimneys Farms. (Note: removing all of those trees is likely to cost $100,000. We don’t believe our residents would appreciate a $100 special assessment at this time, so we’re carefully exploring our options.) In any event, the Board is taking this seriously. We realize that the issue is likely more important to those who live in the East Village. So we want to be careful not to overspend on a solution that a third of the neighborhood likely doesn’t care much about. To show our commitment, the Board has designated a Director who is now responsible for these beautification efforts, Drew Cerruti. Drew is already supported by a committee of several homeowners and is welcoming more to join the effort. So what are we going to do about the Highway 20 entrance? We will continue to talk with our County Commissioner, make a noticeable effort this Spring to improve the landscaping at the site, and begin discussions with the owner of the Hollywood Feed side to potentially buy that parcel of land so that we have the maximum amount of options available. We will continue to talk about realistic steps we can take to make the Highway 20 entrance something we can be proud of. But the bottom line is this – we will not be able to have entrance monuments like CRC. It’s just not realistically possible. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to myself, Drew, or Property Manager Aaron Cosson. 12

Pet Therapy

Pets make wonderful companions & friends. All pet lovers know how precious the bond is between us and our animals. It doesn’t matter whether the pet is a cat, dog, bunny, hamster, fish or bird... our pets are family!

By Susan Tanner, Windermere Pet Sitter

Just a few ways dogs especially bring such a positive impact into our lives:

Good for the heart. Research shows that interacting with dogs elevates levels of the hormone, oxytocin. It is a powerful cardioprotective hormone meaning it protects the heart and cardiovascular system. Research shows that it lowers blood pressure and significantly reduces levels of free radicals and inflammation, two families of chemicals involved in cardiovascular disease.

Good for Mental Health

We are a social species. Humans need social contact. We are healthier and live longer when we connect with each other. Social network research shows that we’re healthier the more connected we are and dogs can give us this warm, strong bond. They are great company - normally good cuddlers, listeners (and never talk back!) and provide some fun to our lives. They may counter stress and are protective against depression.

Promote exercise

Grab that leash and get out there and walk, walk, walk! 2 or 3 times a day even for 20 minutes is great. Our pups need to watch their weight, as well so this can be your partner to stay healthy and get that exercise you need!

Boost your immune system.

Many people find that when they get a dog, they get fewer colds. The main reason is that dogs bring dirt inside on their paws. The dirt contains tiny bacteria that gives our immune system something to work on. Like muscles, the immune system needs to work to build its strength. Living in a too clean environment can lessen the immune system. It’s one of the suggested scientific reasons for an increase of allergies over the past few decades. When a dog brings dirt into the house on his paws, the human immune system goes to work building up it’s muscles. As this happens, the immune system becomes more robust and resilient and we’re more protected colds and other illnesses and disease. I personally have always felt pets are the best and most natural therapy. They give unconditional love, always happy to see us even if gone for just 30 minutes, and I believe petting them brings a sense of peace. If you don’t have a pet, think about about it... and you can experience all of the positivity above! As I type these words, my little pup is curled up happily beside me with his contented snore...

and I L OVE IT!

Ways to 10 Budget-Friendly Prep Your Kitchen for Resale

community news

We hear and read so much about the current seller’s market that we have the impression that we can list and sell our homes “as is” and get top dollar. For the most part, this is just not true. Kitchens sell homes. Even homebuyers whose best culinary skill is microwaving Ramen noodles notice kitchens when home shopping. As a real estate team (and a Top 10 Team in North Atlanta – shameless plug!), we encourage sellers to update kitchen finishes and to stage it properly, showcasing its best features. A whole renovation is not necessary Simple updates can transform your kitchen, keeping it from sitting on the market for days and maximizing your resale value.
