From the Publisher It’s a huge honor to be called “the best” in any field, but when the honor comes from the people of your community it has an extra nice ring, yes? We are blessed in North Georgia with a wide array of businesses and services that make living, working and playing in the region top notch. That’s why The Times is so proud to present the Best of North Georgia 2016. Our inaugural readers’ choice awards created phenomenal engagement when we invited folks to nominate their favorites in numerous categories. Then readers engaged again to vote for the winners. In all, we had 245 winners and almost 185,000 votes in our first year! There were seven main categories, which each contained numerous subcategories. The main categories included automotive/marine; food and beverage; home/personal services; medical and health; professional services; recreation/destinations; and retail. We have so many businesses that provide an array of valuable goods and services to our region. We wanted a way to showcase as many of those businesses as possible and wanted to involve readers of all of our print and digital products. The Best of North Georgia is an exciting and engaging way to do that. We are delighted that local businesses enthusiastically participated in getting themselves nominated and then campaigned in The Times, online and on social media. Not only did many win the coveted “Best of” moniker for 2016, they also improved their overall exposure in the region, which is one of our main goals with this initiative – to boost grassroots marketing for local businesses and to celebrate and crown the best. Your best source for news and multimedia marketing For nearly 70 years, the people of North Georgia have been able to depend on one always reliable source of news and information – The Times of Gainesville. From its beginnings in 1947 as a daily newspaper printed on a second-hand press in a building that once housed a funeral home, to today’s modern media company offering an array of print and digital avenues for distributing information and advertising, The Times has remained a constant during a period of incredible change for Hall County and the surrounding region. The daily newspaper founded by Charles and Lessie Smithgall has evolved into a truly modern multimedia company with newspapers, magazines, the region’s most popular news website and digital offerings designed especially for use on smartphones and tablets. Today’s busy media company has its roots in humble beginnings. When it debuted in 1947, the newspaper had a cir-

culation of about 3,000 households and published Sunday through Friday. A Saturday edition was added in 1988. The newspaper operation moved into its current building on Green Street in Gainesville in 1970, and in 1981 was purchased by the Gannett Co., one of the nation’s largest national media companies, which used the facility as a printing plant for USA Today as well as continuing to serve as home to The Times, which by then had expanded its distribution base into many neighboring North Georgia counties. The paper again changed hands in 2004, when it was acquired by Morris Multimedia Inc. based in Savannah, which remains as the parent company. Affiliated neighboring newspapers in Forsyth, Dawson and Barrow counties are also part of the The Times corporate family. Under the current ownership, The Times has drastically expanded the delivery systems for the news and information gathered by the region’s largest

newsroom. In addition to the daily paper, the company produces three monthly magazines – LAKE, HOME and MOXIE – as well as digital offerings that include the digital replica edition of each day’s newspaper available via app, the news website gainesvilletimes.com, and mobile sites for use by those who prefer to get the news via tablets and smartphones. In addition to its reputation as the region’s most credible and thorough source for news, The Times offers a wide spectrum of marketing and advertising opportunities that include print and digital advertising as well as e-mail blasts and digital marketing strategies.
