Championship Preview

T

rinity Western enters this year’s national championship chasing history, as the Spartans look to become the first team in CIS women’s soccer history to win six national titles. Last year, TWU came one win short of writing history, falling to Laval in the CIS gold medal match, but, with a rebuilt roster – one laden with young talent – the Spartans, who are tied with UBC with five national championships each, aim to complete unfinished business. The Spartans, who will play in their fifth straight national tournament, are coming off an impressive campaign in which they posted a 10-1-3 regular season record and, prior to the Canada West final, strung together a 16-match unbeaten streak. While TWU lost to UBC in this year’s conference final, the Spartans, who have played in each of the last three CIS gold medal games, enter into this weekend’s tournament as a legitimate threat to make a return to the top. With 10 players on the Spartans roster who were part of both the 2012 and 2013 national championship teams, TWU has plenty of championship pedigree, with players like Canada West First Team All-Stars Vanessa Kovacs, Ali Oliverio and Krista Gommeringer all set to lead the charge. With coach Graham Roxburgh, who is in his 17th season at the helm, once again leading the way for TWU there’s no reason to believe this year’s team can’t make history.

Throughout the Canada West regular season, the Spartans were one of the best teams in the country, as they poured in the offence, leading the conference with 37 goals, and put up a strong defensive front, allowing a league-low six goals. In the post-season, the Spartans were particularly sharp defensively, winning three straight 1-0 decisions to advance to the conference championship, before losing 1-0 to the final. After dropping their season-opener against the Thunderbirds, the Spartans put together a dominant two months of soccer in which they posted a 13-0-3 record, including the run up to the Canada West final. Over that span, TWU outscored its opponents 40-4 and earned 12 clean sheets. KEEPER On the back end, goalkeeper Ally Williamson, who transferred from UBC in 2014, was a pillar of strength for TWU as she started all 18 games, including the regular season and playoffs, and was named a Canada West First Team All-Star. Williamson finished the regular season atop the conference in goals against, with six, goals against average, at 0.43, and save percentage, at .900. DEFENDERS Defensively, the Spartans proved their mettle throughout the regular season and playoffs, allowing only seven goals in 18 games. With players like Amy Gartke, Quinn Hardstaff, Stephanie Chin and Lindsey Pulice leading the way, the Spartans are as formidable as they come.

FORWARDS Up front, Canada West Rookie of the Year Rachel Hutchinson, Canada West Second Team All-Star Seina Kashima and Gommeringer combined for 11 goals and 18 assists in the regular season and give TWU plenty of variety in the forward ranks. With the speed of both Hutchinson and Kashima combined with the physicality and scoring prowess of Gommeringer, the Spartans offence has been in tidy hands all season. For the Spartans, this is a road they’ve travelled many times. They have played in five of the last seven CIS gold medal matches and come out victorious in four of those championship tilts. Last year, TWU sought an historic victory and came up one win shy. This year, the team is set to make another run at the tournament title as they look to put TWU at the top of women’s soccer’s all-time heap. “I am extremely proud of the players for battling through a tough road to the CIS championship,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “The way our conference is set up, we had to battle through some excellent teams to extend the season. As we know from past experiences there are excellent teams at CIS national championship. Laval would obviously be the favourite heading in, and there are other great teams representing their conferences. We are delighted to be heading back for a fifth year in a row and this will be a great experience for our players.”

MIDFIELDERS In the middle of the park, TWU has one of the best one-two punches in the country with Oliverio pushing the offensive agenda and Kovacs controlling the game’s tempo from box to box. Oliverio had a Canada West-leading 10 goals in the regular season while Kovacs is arguably the most complete player in the country. With first-year Jenaya Robertson rounding out a vaunted trio, the Spartans have a midfield that is as strong as any in the CIS.

SPARTAN ATHLETICS: Mission Statement

In full concert and support of the University mission statement…Spartan Athletics develops godly Christian leaders equipped to succeed in dynamic environments, persistently advancing to the edge of their abilities, shaping and transforming sport and culture, and growing in their personal relationships with Jesus Christ.

SPARTAN ATHLETICS: The Complete Champion Approach The Complete Champion Approach helps Spartan Student-Athletes become complete people and champions in all areas of their lives. This program seeks to address the whole person (spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social). Some student-athletes may not realize how much they can accomplish if they address all areas of their lives and take on life to the fullest. The Complete Champion Approach is to help student-athletes use their God-given talents and intellect to live a life of significance, experiencing true personal success and powerfully influencing their family and their community. Another significant goal is for Athletics to aid the functions of Student Life and avail ourselves of the services and opportunities already existing and under development through the Student Life Department.

Story of TWU: in 1961, a small group of people had an extraordinary vision to establish a Christian university in Canada to prepare leaders of integrity. They purchased Seal-Kap Dairy Farm, and opened the first classes of Trinity Junior College in the fall of 1962 with 17 students. The College quickly grew to 800 students by 1984, when it was granted membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). In 1985, the British Columbia legislature granted it a charter under the name Trinity Western University. Trinity Western takes a unique approach to university education. Working from a Christian worldview, it combines ethics and morality with career-oriented disciplines in an integrated learning community. It facilitates whole person development and transforms many young men and women with a vision to make a positive contribution to the world. Building on its well-recognized academic programs, the University has recently launched a School of Business, School of Education and the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa. The mission of Trinity Western University, as an arm of the church, is to develop godly Christian leaders: positive, goal-oriented university graduates with thoroughly Christian minds; growing disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God through fulfilling the Great Commission, serving God and people in the various marketplaces of life. 7600 Glover Road, Langley, B.C., Canada, V2Y 1Y1 P: 604.888.7511 F: 604.513.2061 Web: www.twu.ca

W

hen it comes to Trinity Western women’s soccer, Graham Roxburgh is the man behind the magic.

Since Roxburgh took over as head coach in 1999, he has guided the Spartans to five CIS National Championships (2004, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013) and six Canada West gold medals (2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013). This past season, in 2015, Roxburgh helped the Spartans to a 10-1-3 regular season record, which marked the fifth straight year TWU has only lost one regular season contest. Roxburgh also helped TWU to its 12th straight Canada West Final Four and guided the Spartans to their seventh Canada West final in the last eight years. Roxburgh was the CIS Coach of the Year in 2011 and has been named the Canada West Coach of the Year three times, including 2009, when his team posted an 18-2-1 record, won the Canada West league title, the Canada West playoff banner and capped the year by winning the national championship, 2011, when he led the Spartans to a 12-1-1 regular season record, which included a 15-game undefeated streak going into the CIS national championship, and 2014, when he helped TWU to a 10-1-1 regular season record, a Canada West title and a CIS silver medal.

In 2000, Roxburgh guided the women to a 6-3-1 record and was named BCCAA Coach of the Year. He has coached the AIA Senior Men’s Team, which competes in the PCSL, since 1996 and now serves as the general manager and technical director for the Fraser Valley Action within the PCSL. With Athletes in Action, Roxburgh has coached and played against several national teams from around the world including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, South Africa, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Paraguay and Croatia. Roxburgh also serves as the founding director of SportAid, a nonprofit sports organization, which aims to assist with sport teams and provide resources in an effort to aid in community transformation in countries around the world.

Roxburgh has twice been named the head coach for Canada’s women’s soccer team at the FISU Games, including 2009 in Serbia, when his team finished seventh, and in 2011 in China, his team finished fifth. Roxburgh’s teams have also been of the ground breaking variety at TWU as the 2004 CIS National Championship was the first of its kind for the University. That team was also named the Sport BC Team of the Year and BC Soccer Team of the Year. Prior to that, in their first year in the CIS, the Spartans women’s soccer team earned a Canada West silver medal, which was the first conference medal Trinity Western had ever earned. Roxburgh first came to Trinity Western University in 1993 as an assistant to coach Alan Alderson with the men’s soccer program. At the time he was working for Athletes in Action and had just graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois) with a BA in History and Biblical Studies. He was later recommended to take over the women’s program and was hired as head coach in 1998. The fall of 1999 marked his first season with the team, which was only three years after women’s soccer became a varsity sport.

In 2004 O’Driscoll began coaching as a graduate assistant with the women’s soccer program at TWU and in 2005 took on the role of being the Spartans main assistant coach. Since 2008, O’Driscoll has taken on more and more responsibility as part of the soccer coaching staff and currently serves the women’s soccer program as the associate coach. O’Driscoll brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to the program, both in terms of her soccer coaching ability, but also with her skills and mindset in areas of leadership development, team building, recruiting and personal development. atalie Ghobrial is the Head Athletic Therapist and Clinic Supervisor at Trinity Western University, and has been with the Spartans since 2006. Ghobrial graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology & Health Sciences, a Bachelor of Education, and a certificate in Athletic Therapy from York University. Following her education and certification, Ghobrial also pursued and obtained her American designation in the field of Athletic Training. Prior to Ghobrial’s endeavors in British Columbia, she was a member of the York University Sports Medicine Team as the Head Athletic Therapist of York’s football program, and worked in the private sector in Toronto. While caring for athletes both on and off the field, Ghobrial utilizes various techniques in their rehabilitation. Manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue release and muscle energy are used alongside exercise rehabilitation and therapeutic modalities in the treatment of athlete’s injuries.

Philippe Saucier B.Sc, CAT(C), FMS Assistant Athletic Therapist

P

hilippe Saucier is in his sixth year as the Assistant Athletic Therapist with the Spartans Sport Medicine Team. He is a graduate from Concordia University in Montreal, Québec where he received a Bachelor of Exercise Science specializing in Athletic Therapy. Upon receiving his CAT(C) certification in 2007, Saucier moved to Belleville, Ont. to start his own successful Athletic Therapy practice, which included work with high school, collegiate and elite athletes in multiple sports including: soccer, basketball, volleyball, rugby, hockey, figure skating and gymnastics. In addition to his work at Trinity Western, Saucier continues to also work with BC provincial sport teams, local softball tournaments, box lacrosse and field hockey. Using contemporary soft tissue rehabilitation techniques, therapeutic modalities, physical reconditioning and supportive wrapping to promote optimal healing, he believes in the body’s resiliency and that all athletes can be safely integrated back into play.

Spartans Women’s Soccer Committed to Compel

Canada West Awards Rookie of the Year - Rachel Hutchinson The first-year striker led all Canada West rookies and was tied for fourth in overall points in the conference, with 11, after she collected five goals and six assists in 14 games. After being held off the scoresheet in her first five games, the Cloverdale, B.C. product, who started 12 of her team’s 14 regular season contests, exploded for three goals in an 18-minute span against Alberta to launch an impressive nine-game run to end the year. Following her hat-trick performance, which saw her honoured as the Canada West First Star of the Week, Hutchinson, who is studying biology, finished the regular season with points in seven of TWU’s final nine games, including a threeassist effort against Manitoba. After earning two game-winning goals in the regular season, Hutchinson followed that up with the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Alberta in the Canada West Regional Playoffs. Hutchinson is the sixth Spartans women’s soccer player to be named Canada West Rookie of the Year, following in the footsteps of Carlee O’Brien (2003), Nikki Wright (2008), Alicia Tesan (2009), Krista Gommeringer (2012) and Seina Kashima (2014). Current Spartans goalie Ally Williamson also won the award in 2011, when she was with UBC, prior to transferring to TWU in 2014. “Rachel had a fantastic first year and gave us an offensive spark out wide,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “She had the ability to finish and the ability to cross and create lots of chances for her teammates. She really had an excellent first year in terms of contributing offensively while also working hard on the defensive side of the ball. “Before that weekend against Alberta, she just didn’t hit the back of the net. But when she scored that hat-trick, I think it brought her to life and since then, she has been one of our more dangerous players.”
