Championship Preview

n terms of program success and aura, the Trinity Western women’s soccer team is in the midst of an all-time high. The Spartans have played in each of the last four CIS championship gold medal matches. They enter this year’s national tournament having won four of the last seven CIS titles. At a conference level, they have played in seven of the last eight Canada West finals, winning four times, and in regular season action, TWU has lost a combined total of five games over the last six seasons. All told, TWU has also played for in the gold medal match in each of its last nine championship tournament appearances, be it at the conference or national level. All that being said, the Spartan might just be amongst the hungriest teams at this year’s championship, as TWU enters the tournament looking to bump a mini slump that has seen the program drop four consecutive championship games, including the CIS title games in 2014 and 2015 and the Canada West final in 2015 and 2016. However, if there’s a team to get TWU back on top, this is a Spartans group, led Canada West coach of the year Graham Roxburgh, that has

as good of a chance as any to do just that. With a team-first mentality, TWU put together its first ever undefeated regular season, at 11-0-3.

As has become commonplace with TWU’s women’s soccer team, the midfield is once again a strength of the team.

The Spartans followed that up by earning a spot in the Canada West final and a berth in the CIS championship tournament with a pair of shutout wins in the conference play-in game and semifinal.

FORWARDS In the forward unit, the Spartans have a number of dangerous weapons they can deploy. Up top, fifth-year Isabella Di Trocchio, who was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star, led TWU with eight goals, including a U Sports-leading six game-winners.

GOALKEEPERS In net, Spartans goalkeeper Ally Williamson is the backbone of the team as the four-time Canada West all-star allowed just five goals in 12 games en route to being named the conference’s top goalie. Christina Oliverio has been TWU backup throughout the year, seeing action in two games in which she earned a win and a tie. In 2014, Oliverio was the goalie of record throughout the season and helped TWU to a Canada West gold medal and a CIS silver medal. DEFENDERS On the back end, Amy Gartke, who will moonlight as a midfielder at times, was amongst the Spartans best defenders as she was named a Canada West First Team All-Star for the first time in her career. Along with Gartke, TWU has had an impressive defensive rotation that includes fifth-years Steph Chin and Lindsey Pulice, second-year Brooklyn Tidder and first-year Kristen Sakaki. MIDFIELDERS The midfield has been led by second-year Jenaya Robertson, who has been a central figure in almost everything TWU does on the pitch. This year, she has largely been joined by Kathleen Chin, Leanne Verhoeff, and, at times, Gartke.

Providing offense on the outside is third-year Seina Kashima, who was named a Canada West First Team All-Star, who is as dynamic as they come and constantly provides fits for opposition’s outside backs. Second-year Rachel Hutchinson, who was last year’s CIS Rookie of the Year, and third-year Danae Derksen round out a speedy forward group that helped TWU score 31 goals in 14 regular season games. Statistically speaking, Kashima finished the year with three goals and six assists, while Hutchinson had three goals and seven assists and Derksen had four goals and one assist. In the post-season, Di Trocchio and Derksen have led the way on the stats sheet, with each collecting one goal and one assist in three games. FINAL WORD Through 22 matches, this year, including preseason, regular season and playoffs, the Spartans have a record of 16-1-5, which includes 16 clean sheets. They’ve been nothing short of dominant since training camp began in August. While the Spartans loss in the conference final was their first setback of the season, as Roxburgh said following the game, “…with this group of classy players and group of character players, we’ll rise another day.”

SPARTAN ATHLETICS: Mission Statement

In full concert and support of the University mission statement…Spartan Athletics develops godly Christian leaders equipped to succeed in dynamic environments, persistently advancing to the edge of their abilities, shaping and transforming sport and culture, and growing in their personal relationships with Jesus Christ.

SPARTAN ATHLETICS: The Complete Champion Approach The Complete Champion Approach helps Spartan Student-Athletes become complete people and champions in all areas of their lives. This program seeks to address the whole person (spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social). Some student-athletes may not realize how much they can accomplish if they address all areas of their lives and take on life to the fullest. The Complete Champion Approach is to help student-athletes use their God-given talents and intellect to live a life of significance, experiencing true personal success and powerfully influencing their family and their community. Another significant goal is for Athletics to aid the functions of Student Life and avail ourselves of the services and opportunities already existing and under development through the Student Life Department.

Story of TWU: in 1961, a small group of people had an extraordinary vision to establish a Christian university in Canada to prepare leaders of integrity. They purchased Seal-Kap Dairy Farm, and opened the first classes of Trinity Junior College in the fall of 1962 with 17 students. The College quickly grew to 800 students by 1984, when it was granted membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). In 1985, the British Columbia legislature granted it a charter under the name Trinity Western University. Trinity Western takes a unique approach to university education. Working from a Christian worldview, it combines ethics and morality with career-oriented disciplines in an integrated learning community. It facilitates whole person development and transforms many young men and women with a vision to make a positive contribution to the world. Building on its well-recognized academic programs, the University has recently launched a School of Business, School of Education and the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa. The mission of Trinity Western University, as an arm of the church, is to develop godly Christian leaders: positive, goal-oriented university graduates with thoroughly Christian minds; growing disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God through fulfilling the Great Commission, serving God and people in the various marketplaces of life. 7600 Glover Road, Langley, B.C., Canada, V2Y 1Y1 P: 604.888.7511 F: 604.513.2061 Web: www.twu.ca

W

hen it comes to Trinity Western women’s soccer, Graham Roxburgh is the man behind the magic.

Roxburgh first came to Trinity Western University in 1993 as an assistant to coach Alan Alderson with the men’s soccer program.

Since Roxburgh took over as head coach in 1999, he has guided the Spartans to five CIS National Championships, in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, and six Canada West gold medals, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

At the time he was working for Athletes in Action and had just graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois) with a BA in History and Biblical Studies.

Roxburgh has guided TWU to Canada West Final Four in 13 consecutive years and over the last six seasons, the Spartans have lost only five regular season games. He has been named the Canada West Coach of the Year four times, in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016 and the CIS Coach of the Year in 2011. Roxburgh has twice been named the head coach for Canada’s women’s soccer team at the FISU Games, including in 2009, in Serbia, when his team finished seventh, and in 2011 in China, when his team finished fifth. Roxburgh’s teams have been groundbreakers at TWU, as the 2004 CIS national championship was the first of its kind for the University. That team was also named Sport BC Team of the Year and BC Soccer Team of the Year. Prior to that, in their first year in the CIS, the Spartans women’s soccer team earned a Canada West silver medal, which was the first conference medal Trinity Western had ever earned.

He was later recommended to take over the women’s program and was hired as head coach in 1998. The fall of 1999 marked his first season with the team, which was only three years after women’s soccer became a varsity sport. In 2000, Roxburgh guided the women’s team to a 6-3-1 record and he was named BCCAA Coach of the Year. He has also coached the AIA Senior Men’s Team, which competes in the PCSL, since 1996 and now serves as the general manager and technical director for the Fraser Valley Action within the Pacific Coast Soccer League. With Athletes in Action, Roxburgh has coached and played against several national teams from around the world including in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, South Africa, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Paraguay and Croatia. Roxburgh also serves as the founding director of SportAid, a nonprofit sports organization, which aims to assist with sport teams and provide resources in an effort to aid in community transformation in countries around the world.

Spartans Women’s Soccer

Canada West Awards Coach of the Year - Graham Roxburgh Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh led Trinity Western to the first undefeated regular season (11-0-3) in the program’s history. The impressive season saw Roxburgh complete a six-year run in which the Spartans have lost a total of just five regular season games. Roxburgh’s team once again was a bastion for defensive success, with the Spartans allowing just six goals in 14 games. Offensively, TWU finished third in Canada West in goals scored with 31. He has now led TWU on a 27-match regular season undefeated streak. Including this year’s pre-season, regular season and playoffs, the Spartans are 15-0-5. He has now been named the Canada West Coach of the Year four times, including in 2009, 2011 and 2014. In 2011, Roxburgh, who is in his 18th year as the Spartans head coach, was also named the CIS Coach of the Year. “It is very exciting to hear that Graham has been recognized for his coaching excellence at the university level. His commitment to the women’s soccer program is clearly evident and the outstanding coaching Graham has provided has created one of the strongest programs in Canada,” said TWU acting athletic director Blair Whitmarsh. “Graham is a strong communicator and his focus on developing complete champions on and off the field is clearly seen. I am pleased to have Graham part of Spartan Athletics and we are all proud of him and the women’s soccer team.”
