You make the ministry of our future Priests possible.
St. Mary’s Seminary | 9845 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77024
Dear friends,
May the peace of Christ reign in your hearts!
As St. Mary’s Seminary concludes its 120th year, our community is grateful to inherit and culti vate a priestly formation program that strives for true excellence in its human, intellectual, spiritual, and pastoral dimensions.
We remain committed to preparing our future shepherds to be bold in meeting the challenges of priestly ministry in an intelligent, generous, and compassionate manner that demonstrates their credibility as witnesses to Christ and true fathers for God’s people.
I invite you to read this inaugural impact report to discover more about how our seminarians
are prepared to become effective heralds of the Gospel, and see the manifold ways that the wid er community helps these men respond to the call to priestly service.
Be assured of our prayers for you and those you love, and I look forward to welcoming you to St. Mary’s sometime soon.
St. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Very Rev. Eurel Manzano Rector, St. Mary’s Seminary47 men are currently being formed to become priests at St. Mary’s Seminary. These men may spend anywhere from 5 to 7 years preparing for Ordination to the Priesthood. Here is a look at what goes into their preparation to serve our Church.
Intellectual formation is necessary not only for the development of each man into a flourishing human being, but to also allow them to proclaim the Gospel message to the people of our own day in a way that is credible and that can be easily understood—light and truth of our Catholic faith preached and lived in a clear and accessible way.
In partnership with the University of St. Thomas (UST), seminarians at St. Mary’s are taught by scholars who are leaders in their respective fields. Additionally, in partnership with the Cameron School of Business at UST, seminarians and priests of the Archdiocese can obtain a Master of Science in Ecclesial Administration and Management—a tremendous asset for priests around the world tasked with crisis management, presbyteral and employee oversight, and high-level fiscal planning.
Through prayer, spiritual reflection and guided discernment, seminarians can nourish and sustain growth in intimate communion with God. Nurtured by a fervent commitment to prayer, Word and Sacrament, each man at St. Mary’s heeds the foundational call to disciple ship and conversion of heart. Through daily Mass, the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours, and liturgical formation, semi narians are prepared to spiritually nour ish our future Church.
St. Mary’s fosters the mastery of qualities such as generosity, openness, integrity, prudence and maturity, which will help these men become bridges of communion in God’s vineyard. In order to be effective priests and pastors, St. Mary’s Seminary is committed to the total formation of the men pursuing a priestly vocation— that they might be fully developed and bring all of their gifts to the ministries to which they are called.
At St. Mary’s, pastoral formation is the culmination of the entire formation process: that seminarians may take their human, spiritual and intellectual gifts and enter into communion with the charity of Christ the Good Shepherd—to serve, to teach, to lead and to sanctify the community and to save souls. During their pastoral year, seminarians go out and serve in our parish communities—learning how to be effective and compassionate ministers in the field.
“St. Mary’s Seminary has given me a place that has fostered my vocation to fulfill my calling to the priesthood and for that I am deeply grateful.
I feel prepared to begin my ministry as a priest because of the formation I received at St. Mary’s.”
Rev. Luis Garcia Class of 2022“The people of God deserve holy priests. In other words, God wants what is best for his people. He wants to give them the best. To be sure, when I say the best, I mean holy, when I say holy, I mean well-integrated, prayerful, and intelligent men, whose desire is to live out pastoral charity for the people of God. At St. Mary’s Seminary, good men have the opportunity to become holy priests because of God, primarily, who has done great things.”
Marlon Barao Seminarian, 1st Year TheologyAt St. Mary’s Seminary, we seminarians are formed to be like Mary, to answer the Lord with a resounding “YES!” and to receive Christ into our hearts through prayer, intellectual and pastoral formation, and community life. It is at St. Mary’s that our “YES” is nurtured and where I grow to be more like Christ.

St. Mary’s Seminary prepares men not only for the Church in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, but throughout Texas and the United States.
Currently, there are 8 dioceses represented at St. Mary’s Seminary, and there are numerous others that have sent seminarians in the past.
Please Note: Not all seminarians of the Archdiocese attend St. Mary’s Seminary and several pursue studies elsewhere, e.g., Rome, etc., so the below map does not necessarily represent the total number of seminarians of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston that are also supported through St. Mary’s Seminary and the Vocations Office. Additionally, college level seminarians attend other seminaries, e.g. Holy Trinity Seminary (Irving, TX), or St. Joseph College Seminary (St. Benedict, LA).
RED dioceses show current number of enrolled seminarians:
archdiocese of galveston-Houston: 25 (one committed to the archdiocese for the Military Services, uSa) Diocese of austin: 8 Diocese of Brownsville: 3 Diocese of victoria: 6
Diocese of corpus christi: 2 (one committed to the archdiocese for the Military Services, uSa) ordinariate of the chair of St. Peter: 2 Diocese of charleston: 1

Diocese of amarillo Diocese of Beaumont Diocese of Dallas Diocese of Fort Worth Diocese of laredo Diocese of lubbock Diocese of San angelo Diocese of Tyler
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston boasts one of the largest and most active permanent diaconates in the United States. With nearly 400 permanent deacons, active and retired, the men formed through the Office of the Permanent Diaconate are a key component to the liturgical, sacramental, educational and direct service ministries of our local Church. The formation program is administered out of St. Mary’s Seminary and in conjunction with the University of St. Thomas.
Our deacons help lead our parish communi ties by assisting pastors, managing business affairs, overseeing catechesis and sacramen tal preparation, and performing baptisms, preaching, praying and sanctifying. Our deacons also take an active role in ministries that serve the poor, the sick, the incarcer ated and those most in need.
The permanent deacons of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are here to serve in the name of the Gospel and to do so proud ly. Any man interested in learning more
Note: Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is expected to donate their entire Corpus Christi collection to the formation of seminarians.
