Beyond the Performance

At Texas Performing Arts, we make sure engagement with the arts extends beyond the stage — a place where students, faculty, and the Central Texas community can connect, gather, and share ideas. Through workshops, discussions, masterclasses, and more, we strive for everyone to be able to feed their artistic spirit.

Digitization project will make historic Hollywood film backdrops accessible to fans around the world

Texas Performing Arts’ Hollywood Backdrop Collection has garnered international attention in the past few years, as interest has grown in this important art form. Thanks to generous support from donors, the collection will soon be available to view and explore online.

These assets make up the largest and most extensive educational collection of Hollywood motion picture backdrops in the world.

Assistant Professor of Practice Karen Maness and Professor Emeritus Richard Isackes lovingly documented the history of the film backdrops in their award-winning publication, The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop (Regan Arts 2016). A cache of 68 historic paintings was generously donated to Texas Performing Arts by J.C. Backings and the Art Directors Guild Archives’ Backdrop Recovery Project.

The collection includes backings from iconic and critically acclaimed films such as National Velvet (1944), The Sound of Music (1965), Ben Hur (1959) and North by Northwest (1958). Following national coverage of the project on CBS’ Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley in February 2020 and two subsequent exhibitions hosted on the stage of Bass Concert Hall the following year, the Boca Raton Museum of Art opened Art of the Hollywood Backdrop in April 2022. The exhibition has attracted international media coverage, from the Wall Street Journal to the Times of London.

With generous support from Susan & Robert Morse, Texas Performing Arts is now digitizing the collection to make it even more widely available. A new website will launch and will serve as both digital archive and interactive teaching tool.

Bob Bursey. “Sharing the collection digitally will allow us to celebrate these masters of illusion and perspective while inspiring the next generation of artists with access to material never before available.”

The website will showcase the backdrops in high-resolution detail, amplifying and preserving the techniques of backdrop painting and restoration pioneered by Hollywood’s uncredited lead scenic artists. Texas Performing Arts has captured direct instruction from Hollywood’s top motion picture scenic artists Michael Denering, Joe Francuz, and Donald MacDonald for the website.

While student training in these lost techniques continues in Texas Performing Arts’ Fabrication Studios, the digital archive will share detailed instruction for future caretakers how to preserve, stabilize and restore these works as the project continues to expand. The digitization of the collection will also help contextualize the work by connecting the backdrops to the iconic films in which they were featured, reaching audiences around the world.

ANDREW LEVITT (AKA NINA WEST) (Edna Turnblad) is proudly from Columbus, Ohio and thrilled to be returning to Hairspray. He has performed as drag queen Nina West since 2001 and competed on the 11th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, for which he was named Miss Congeniality. On stage, he starred in regional premiers of Buyer and Cellar (Alex Moore) and Peter and the Starcatcher (Betty Bumbrake) and also appeared in Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Ursula) in 2019. Other TV credits: RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race, Dragging the Classics: The Brady Bunch (Alice, Paramount+), This is Me: Pride Celebration Spectacular (Disney+), Say It With Pride: Celebrate Pride 365 (Disney+), The Blue’s Clues Pride Parade Sing Along and The Meaning of Pride, both for Nickelodeon. He provided the voice for the animated short Coaster, as well as being featured on NickJr’s Baby Shark’s Big Show as Gail Whale. He has 3 Billboard-charting EP’s, including the critically acclaimed Drag is Magic, an EP of music for children. NIKI METCALF (Tracy Turnblad) is thrilled to be taking on a role she’s dreamed of playing since she first saw the original Broadway production! He has published two collections of comic stories Elementary Education and Vertigo Park and Other Tall Tales (both Knopf), as well as two recent novels, Getting Over Homer and Let Nothing You Dismay (both now in Vintage paperback). His humor, cartoons, and poetry have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Spy, The New Republic, and Esquire, among many others. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lecomte du Nuoy Prize, and the George S. Kaufman Award.

THOMAS MEEHAN ( Book ) won the 2003 Tony Award for co-writing the book for Hairspray, after having won the 2001 Tony Award for co- writing the book of The Producers. In 1977, he received his first Tony Award for writing the book of Annie , which was his first Broadway show, and he has since written the books for the musicals I Remember Mama, Ain’t Broadway Grand, Annie Warbucks, Bombay Dreams, and Cry- Baby . In addition, he is a long-time contributor of humor pieces, including “Yma Dream” to The New Yorker , an Emmy Award-winning writer of television comedy, and a collaborator on a number of screenplays, including Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs, To Be or Not to Be, and the film version of The Producers. He is also the co-author for the libretto of 1984 , an opera composed by Lorin Maazel and based on George Orwell’s classic novel of the same name, which had its world premiere in the spring of 2003 at London’s Royal Opera House and was performed at La Scala in Milan. Mr. Meehan is a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild.

SCOTT WITTMAN (Lyrics). Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award winning lyricist, director, writer, and conceiver Scott Wittman co-wrote the lyrics for the hit musical Hairspray (Tony, Grammy, Olivier Award) with creative partner Marc Shaiman. Wittman served as an executive producer on the hit film starring John Travolta. Nominated for a Golden Globe, Grammy, and two Emmy Awards for the original songs on NBC’s musical drama Smash . Shaiman and Wittman’s original score for the Marilyn Monroe musical Bombshell was released by Sony Records. Scott and Marc’s Broadway writing credits include Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, which Scott also directed, Catch Me If You Can (Tony nom. for Best Musical), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway and the West End. And the new Broadway musical of Some Like it Hot at the Schubert Theatre. Scott has created and directed concerts for Patti LuPone. HAROLD WHEELER (Orchestrations). From the time he conducted the Broadway musical Promises, Promises to the year Dreamgirls won six Tony Awards, Harold Wheeler has been in the front ranks of entertainment as a conductor, composer, arranger and performer. Additional theatre credits as orchestrator and music supervisor include CoCo, Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Wiz, Little Me (Tony nom.), A Chorus Line, The Tap Dance Kid, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, Fame, The Life (Tony nom.), Side Show, Swing! (Tony nom.), The Full Monty . He acted as Musical Director for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and composed the score for the film Love! Valour! Compassion! He is married to actress/singer Hattie Winston.

KEITH THOMPSON (Music Supervisor) is an award-winning musical director, arranger, and composer. He created, directed and produced The Cocktail Cabaret which enjoyed a successful year-long run at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Keith is the founder and host of The Composers Showcase, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a platform for composers to share their original musical creations at The Smith Center in Las Vegas. Professional credits include musical director for Jersey Boys , The Producers, Hairspray, and We Will Rock You, the QUEEN musical, as well as first national tours of Mamma Mia! and Cabaret.

JOHN MEZZIO ( Music Coordinator ) has conducted national tours including State Fair starring John Davidson, Victor Victoria starring Toni Tennille, and Cinderella starring Eartha Kitt and Deborah Gibson.
