Welcome to Texas Performing Arts!

Thank you for joining us! We’re excited to be midway through our 24/25 performing arts season featuring pioneering performances from both iconic and emerging artists. This season we’ve put together a dynamic lineup that pushes the boundaries of traditional performing arts, offering innovative experiences from creators who are boldly redefining their fields.

Looking ahead, we have even more adventurous live performances on the horizon spanning music, dance, theatre, and immersive experiences. The TPA x Fusebox series continues this spring with four cutting-edge projects you won’t want to miss. We’re also thrilled to introduce our next artist-in-residence project, Postcards from the Border, by Austin songwriter Carrie Rodriguez, novelist Oscar Cásares, and photographer Joel Salcido. Explore the spring lineup and all that we have to offer at texasperformingarts.org.

The 24/25 TPA season complements the always-popular Broadway in Austin series—this year is our biggest yet with ten shows direct from Broadway—and our Texas Welcomes series of concerts, comedy, and family entertainment. We hope you can join us often to share in the magic of great performances.

Let’s start the show!

Beyond the Performance

At TPA, we believe in the unique power of live performance to uplift, connect, and create community. We work to ensure that our engagement with the arts reaches far beyond the stage. Each year, thousands of students and Central Texas residents participate in TPA’s educational and outreach programs, including pre- and post-show talks, workshops, masterclasses, and school day performances. By offering an array of transformative experiences, we aim to inspire people of all ages and enhance the role of the performing arts in Austin.

Our 24/25 season continues this spring featuring pioneering performances across multiple genres and a number of ways to interact with and learn from our visiting artists. Here are just a few highlights from this fall: 1 2

Members of Twyla Tharp Dance led a masterclass with UT dance students ahead of the renowned company’s 60th anniversary performance Diamond Jubilee.

TPA welcomed Austin area students for a special school day performance of The Storyville Mosquito, DJ Kid Koala’s new live-action theatre show combining music, puppets, and stories.

Audience members at the performance of Conspirare’s Considering Matthew Shepard had the opportunity to read replicas of letters sent to Matthew’s parents by people from around the world after learning of his death. Photo by Robert Silver.

Legendary jazz master Branford Marsalis joined the UT Jazz Orchestra & Ensemble for rehearsal during his weeklong residency with TPA and the Butler School of Music.

TPA Expands School Day Performances to Include First-ever Broadway Show

At TPA, support from donors like you is instrumental in providing programs that expand access to the performing arts for students of all ages. Your support covers bus transportation and free tickets to educational performances with renowned artists. These daytime performances have ignited inspiration and imagination in hundreds of thousands of students across Central Texas.

TPA transforms lives through the power of creativity, education, and the performing arts. We are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience world-class live performances. But we can’t do it without donors like you!

This year, TPA is expanding to reach more than 16,000 K–12 students. For the first time, 3,000

local students will be able to attend a free, daytime performance of the acclaimed Broadway musical Peter Pan. In addition, every 5th grader in Austin Independent School District will attend a special daytime performance of El Otro Oz, a bilingual, Mexican folkinfused musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. Along with these two presentations, TPA will offer school day performances with Kid Koala, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Versa-Style Street Dance Company for a total of five this year.

Programs like these can’t exist without the generous support of our members and donors like you. Want to learn more about how you can expand live arts access for students in Central Texas? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.471.1195.

Rooted Rhythms is Versa-Style’s mixed repertory production, consisting of the company’s most popular works from the last 20 years. This mixed repertory program pays homage to Street Dance styles such as Whacking, Popping and House dance, as well as a blend of Afro-Latin styles such as Salsa and West African, culminating in an evening of dance that is representative of the diverse experiences of the BIPOC communities of Los Angeles. The high energy works accentuate the many paces, tempos, and pulses of various street and social dance forms through a unique blend of choreography and freestyle elements. This mixed repertory program is a perfect way to introduce audiences to Hip Hop and Street Dance culture. This iteration of Rooted Rhythms will also introduce excerpts from Versa-Style’s newest work Tribute: Guardians of Street Dance set to premiere in late 2025.

Run Time: Approx 70 minutes with a 15-minute intermission

ABOUT THÉOTIME LANGLOIS

DE SWARTE

Violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte is rapidly emerging as a much sought-after violin soloist on both Baroque and modern instruments, as well as a chamber musician, recitalist, and conductor. He became a member of Les Arts Florissants while still a student at the Paris Conservatory, and regularly appears as soloist with the Ensemble. His many awards include a 2022 Ambassador of the REMA European Early Music Network, and winner of the Diapason d’Or for his VivaldiLocatelli-Leclair album.

As co-founder—with harpsichordist Justin Taylor and violinist Sophie de Bardonnèche—of the Baroque ensemble Le Consort, de Swarte can be heard on international stages and on numerous Alpha Classics recordings, including “Specchio Veneziano”, “Opus 1”, and “Philarmonica.”

Other recital collaborators include harpsichordist Justin Taylor and lute player Thomas Dunford, with whom he recorded a much-praised album, The Mad Lover. Another notable recording, A Concert at the Time of Proust, was made on the newly-restored Davidoff Stradivarius at the Philharmonie de Paris Museum. His most recent recording—Antonio Vivaldi Concerti per una vita

(harmonia mundi)—has garnered wide acclaim, and early 2025 marks the release of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the work’s publication. Alongside his instrumental work, de Swarte is emerging as a conductor. In 2023 he led performances at l’Opera-Comique of Lully’s Le Bourgeois gentilhomme and Gretry’s Zemire et Azor. He returns to l’Opera-Comique to lead Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride in November, 2025. De Swarte plays a 1665 Jacob Stainer violin loaned to him by the Jumpstart Foundation.

ABOUT LES ARTS FLORISSANTS

An ensemble of singers and instrumentalists specialized in the performance on period instruments, Les Arts Florissants has played a pioneering role in the revival of Baroque repertoire. Founded in 1979 by William Christie, it gives around one hundred concerts and opera performances each season, in France and internationally, and has produced a extensive discography–especially in its own collection with the harmonia mundi record label. British tenor and conductor Paul Agnew became its comusical director in 2020. The Ensemble has been in residence at the Philharmonie de Paris since 2015. It has launched several education programs for young musicians, among

which Le Jardin des Voix academy, the Arts Flo Juniors program and a collaboration with The Juilliard School. In the village of Thiré (Vendée, Pays de la Loire), Les Arts Florissants created in 2012 the Festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie, followed by a Spring Festival in 2017 and was labelled “Centre Culturel de Rencontre” in 2017 for its project of an international artistic campus. 2018 has seen the creation of the Fondation Les Arts Florissants–William Christie.

ABOUT DAKHABRAKHA

DakhaBrakha is a music quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine. Reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian “ethno chaos” band DakhaBrakha creates a world of unexpected new music.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director – Vladyslav Troitskyi – and given the name that means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element.

After experimenting with Ukrainian folk music, the band has added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, thus creating the bright, unique and unforgettable sound of DakhaBrakha. They strive to help open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring it to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world as well.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, and Ukrainian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-

national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is at first intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation”.

In March 2010, DakhaBrakha won the prestigious Grand Prix prize named after S.Kuriokhin, in the sphere of contemporary art, and confirmed its place in the culture once again. In March 2011 DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and began their ascent in the international music scene. They have since played more than 300 concerts and performances and have taken part in major international festivals throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia, and North America. DakhaBrakha has also collaborated with such international musicians as: Port Mone (By), Kimmo Pohjonen Cluster (Fi), Karl Frierson (DePhazz) (Ge), Steve Cooney (IRL), Inna Zhelannaya (Ru), Kievbass (UA), Djam (UA-Iran), and David Ingibaryan (Hu).

Live Soundtrack for “Earth”: In addition to their own performances, DakhaBrakha also performs their original

live soundtrack along with screening of the classic 1930 film, “Earth”, by Aleksandr Dovzhenko, considered to be one of the most important films of the Soviet era. Dovzhenko is a master of composition, and the film—with its intense close-ups and the impressive expanses of the landscape—is a passionate tribute to the countryside, to nature, and to the people that work on it.

“Earth” was banned 9 days after it’s original release, and was glorified in Ukraine only after Dovzhenko’s death in 1956. Full of lyrical pantheism and utopian exaltation, it demonstrated the ambiguity of Ukrainian geopolitical choice in the 1920s. In 1958, a film critics’ forum in Brussels named “Earth” one of the 12 best films in the history of world cinema.

The group has this to say about the creation of their soundtrack for “Earth”:

“Making music for Alexander Dovzhenko’s “Earth” was a great honor for us and a difficult creative challenge. Frame by frame, this Ukrainian masterpiece of world cinema impressed us every time we worked on it. No matter how we tried to work on the film as a selfcontained artistic endeavor, avoiding ideological evaluation, we could not. Of course, we voiced the

film in the human terms of the 21st Century, even while being aware that after 1930, when the work was completed on “Earth”, came the years of the Communist famine of 1932-1933, the years of repression, and we know about the difficult fate of the Dovzhenko socialist empire. Together, we tried to convey the authenticity, and also the naivety, of those feelings and messages brought to us from that time and that era, to us today and our Earth.”

ARTIST BIOS

Marko Halanevych (vocals, darbuka, tabla, accordion) Marko is the only representative of the countryside in the band. He was born in the village of Krushenivka, in the Vinnitskiy region. into a family of village intellectuals. He graduated from the faculty of the Ukrainian philology, but came into the theatre, became an actor of the Centre of Contemporary Art “DAKH” and then accidentally found himself working with the band. Marko is fond of design – he creates the visual images of DakhaBrakha and also for the “DAKH” theatre where he continues to perform on stage as an actor.

Iryna Kovalenko (vocals, djembe, bass drums, accordion, percussion, bugay, zgaleyka, piano)

Ira has played Ukrainian ethnic music since her early childhood. Moreover, she has graduated from the faculty of folklore. She is fond of yoga, yachting, and rowing. Ira is responsible for the “brass section” of the group, as she easily gets the feel of different musical instruments. She also performs at the “Dakh” theatre as an actress.

Olena Tsybulska (vocals, bass drums, percussion, garmoshka)

Lena is one of the specialists at the folklore department of the National University of Ukraine. When she has some time off, she works on preparing her Candidate’s dissertation about traditional Ukrainian wedding songs. She is fond of driving, sewing and interior design.

Nina Garenetska (vocals, cello, bass drum)

Nina professionally studied folklore and is a self-taught cellist. She is the most artistically open-minded member of the band and is always up for collaborating with other musicians.

Nina is fond of traveling, photography, fancywork and adornment creation.
