Summer Ceviche

Great summer recipe, perfect as an appetizer!

Ingredients: 4 fresh speckle trout fillets 6 limes 3 Roma tomatoes

Cut fillets in to small pieces as the size of dime, little squares, cut limes and squeeze the juice,of course, putting everything in a large bowl, mix up fish and juice and put in refrigerator for 4 hours and every hour pull out of fridge and mix up fish and juice.4 hours layers add chopped up veggies and then add a couple of sprinkles of celery salt and lemon pepper, then add 4 tablespoons of ketchup and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce mix up all together and last ingredient is dice avocados at least one..

Eat with crackers and add Tabasco and a Cold Beer!!

Mmmm Mmm...Enjoy!!

Let’s Talk About Lures!

Howdy ya’ll, In this article I wanted to talk about lures.

Their are so many lure companies out that most are geared towards catching fisherman rather than fish.

In this article I’m gonna talk a little about what lures work for me and what conditions I use them in. I think everyone can agree that Berkley hands down a worldwide recognized brand, 90% of big saltwater tournaments are won using gulp it’s a real diverse lure with many applications and has been around for a long time.

In Texas there are 2 big lure Companies that have started off independently and have crossed over to household names and have become permanent fixtures across tackle stores big and small.

Kwigglers has been around since the 1960’s and was even used by myself in my early childhood, I’ve become a huge fan of what kwigglers has become as a company not only as lure manufacture but also ambassadors to the sport with there catch and release programs that offer incentives to anglers who release all there fish! Margarita Mansfield has been my favorite color of all time and has done major damage over the years, 12- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - JUNE 2019

and is sure to help make memories of young anglers for generations to come.

Michael Bosse owner of Down south lures has been designing baits since he was 12 years old, grabbing his mom’s old broomstick and turning it into a custom plopper! All these companies started somewhere every year seems like there is always a new contender to B the “top 3” Lots of companies come and go or some companies in their infancy like A.M. Flounder Tips and Tactics

One very important thing I want to touch on is wearing a PFD or “personal flotation device” and just how important it is for you to wear yours when you are out on the water. I know they might not be the most comfortable and maybe you think they do not look cool but that is not the point of this object. It is made to save your life in the event of an emergency, lets say you accidentally flip your kayak and or fall off of the boat while it is running. Your best possible chance of survival would most definitely be to have yours on. I am only here to try and help In any way and this is just one of many things I will suggest.

Always be prepared when heading out no matter the situation and tell someone where you are headed. Not your spot but whatever bay system you may be in.

Now these last few months have been outstanding and my buddies and I have been finding flounder everywhere. In the flats has been on fire in any area with moving water and in the heavy presence of bait. A lot of the fish bellies I have been cleaning have had mass amounts of glass minnows and small shad. The majority of the flounder have been hanging out right next to the shore and all up in the grass beds due to the tides being up a bit. Of course now the water level keeps rising and all of the roads in and out have been flooded. Do not let me forget about how the wind is not helping at all by blowing 25 mph for over a week straight. Its ok, we always adapt and find a way to get fish. Walking for an 16- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - JUNE 2019

extra half of a mile finally got us to clearer water allowing us to see in the potholes and get our limits.

Before the wind started up we were getting 20-30 per night in about a four hour time span. They were everywhere, literally. A couple instances there were three or more fish laying right next to each other within probably a foot. None of them were under 17 inches because we chose to be picky. Get yourself a Jerrys Led from me and go find some flatties.

Rod and reel fishing has been pretty good also but most of them are hanging on nice deep drop offs and any kind of small rivers intersecting with a bigger area. Using a 1/4 ounce Texas Rattler jig head and using either Texas Roach in my chickenboy bubba cluckers. I like to also throw a tandem rig and put a gulp shrimp or swimming mullet on top and the clucker on the bottom jig head.

Just work it slowly and throw down current and work it towards you, feel for the thump and then give them about 10 seconds and set the hook pretty solidly. REEFS IN TEXAS

Texas has been involved in artificial reef development for nearly 50 years. Tires, automobiles and construction rubble have all been used in reef building, but these materials had little long term success because they were easily broken up and moved by storms.

The first highly successful artificial reef development occurred during the mid-1970s when 12 obsolete World War II Liberty Ships were sunk at five different sites in the Gulf.

These sites are still productive and are being enhanced with additional durable and stable materials. Oil rig workers and saltwater anglers have long noticed that petroleum platforms on the continental shelf act as unintentional artificial reefs, creating thousands of square miles of marine habitat Gulf-wide, as various species attach themselves to rigs below the waterline. The Texas Artificial Reef Program takes advantage of this insight partnering with conservation organizations, corporations, communities, and sportsmen to create and maintain more than 4,000 acres of artificial reef structures within Texas Gulf waters.

The slow-down in oil and gas activity in the Gulf in the 1980’s resulted in an increase in the number of rigs being scrapped. Recognition that valuable habitat provided by these de facto reefs should be preserved led to creation of comprehensive planning guides for artificial reef development. The Artificial Reef Act of 1989 directed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to promote and enhance the artificial reef potential in Texas. To fulfill this purpose, TPWD developed the Texas Artificial Reef Plan which was adopted in 1990. The Artificial Reef Program is guided by that Plan as well as recommendations from a citizenbased Artificial Reef Advisory Committee.

The Program is constantly acquiring new reef material in various forms such as tugboats, barges, concrete reef balls, and petroleum rigs. In recent years, numerous rigs have been donated by cooperating oil and gas companies.

These companies have also donated to the Texas Artificial Reef Fund half of their realized 18- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - JUNE 2019

savings from not having to remove the rigs to shore. These dedicated funds are used to finance research, administration, maintenance, liability coverage and construction of new artificial reefs. The Texas Artificial Reef Program is selfsufficient, with no funds from public sources or agency revenue.

The Artificial Reef Program focuses its efforts on three types of materials: 1. Decommissioned drilling rigs in the Rigs-toReefs Program.

2. Highway bridge materials and other sources of concrete and heavy-gauge steel in the Nearshore Reefing Program.

3. Large marine vessels in the Ships-to-Reefs Program.

All materials must meet federal and state guidelines for environmental safety and be free of Contamination.

Southern Exposure

Fishing the Delta is starting to take a turn! For the Mississippi River Delta times have been tough but by the looks of things the easier fishing days are still to come. The clients that fished with us last week at Southern Exposure Inland Fishing Charters found out how quick the bite can change. With all boats heading to the freshwater intruded Black Bay side of the Mississippi River chasing redfish on Friday they realized how much river water is really affecting the area. With the river stage floating around 16.5 feet at the New Orleans reader with no signs of slowing down the guys and gals made the best of it. On Friday night the Captains made a decision to head west for Saturday. It was a little on the windy side blowing SE 10-15mph they were able to find plenty of trout for an exciting day in the Delta.

Yes we are still catching fish No it’s not the big beautiful speckled trout we are all accustomed to seeing in the spring. This is the highest I’ve seen the river stay this late in a long time. With no signs of dropping in the next month we watch how the fishing does on the east side of the river.

On the west side out of Buras there is a lot of clean water there and fish to catch. There are a few satellite images showing where the dirty fresh river water has affected the most and where it has made it too. The last few trips limits of reds and trout have been caught using live shrimp under a popping cork along with soft plastics. I would predict in the next few weeks that the fishing will turn on.

Unfortunately two years in a row the Bonne Carre Spillway has been opened and affecting the waters around SE Louisiana. By Manny Perez On the cover of this edition of the Texas Sportsman Tracking Outdoors Magazine, you will notice the beautiful work of photographer Daniel Verrips.

This photo captures a young Labrador Retriever retrieving an antler shed. This is just another example of using a sporting breed as a working dog. Working dogs demand a high energy food to maintain a healthy, well driven lifestyle. So keeping your dogs on a good feed program and exercise regimen is of utmost importance.

As the dog days of summer approach and school is out, there is something that many people notice but can’t quite put a finger on. I often get the question, “What is wrong with my dog? Why isn’t he or she eating right?” Well, the answer lies in animal nutrition, time of day being fed, and external as well as internal temperatures.

For the purpose of this article, we will focus on animal nutrition and specifically what River Run dog food has done for me, as well as several others in the industry. River Run dog food is a subsidiary of Nutrena, a Cargill Company. Nutrena has been in the feed business for almost 100 years.

I was contacted by Nutrena in the winter of 2017 and asked if I would consider being a Pro for their dog food line, known as River Run dog food. This came at an opportune time for me as not only was our business growing and we were feeding as many as 50 dogs, but I was also experiencing rapid weight loss and loose stools in my string of hunting dogs.

I had been feeding a different brand of dog food at the time with good results, however when the dogs really got to the peak of hunting season and were exercising more frequently, I could not maintain their weight regardless of the amount of dog food or frequency of feeding. Needless to say and most importantly, my dogs were beginning to look terrible.

In closing, when feeding dogs a high protein diet during the summer months, consider a few things. One, you may consider a food with less protein that won’t create as much body heat when metabolized. If high protein is a must, you can feed in the evening or bring your dog into a climate controlled area. So, in a nutshell, be considerate of the dog’s environment, as they break down food they create internal heat and if they can’t keep cool, they rather just not eat. Dogs also typically expel less energy during these months and require less food or possibly a lesser protein/fat ratio. Kicking Myself

“Shallowsport Tournament Update”

If you are a Shallow Sport boat owner and have never been to the Shallow Sport Owner’s Tournament, you really need to reevaluate your priorities. At least that is what I discovered when I attended my very first Shallow Sport fishing tournament as a staff member. I have owned and 18’ Sport since 2010, but never fished the SS tournament as I always fished the Texas Invitational Trout Showdown that always fell the weekend after. I always wanted to fish both, but money and logistics played a role in this and I have fished the T.I.T.S. tournament since it began. This was the 19 th year Shallow Sport has hosted a tournament and I was on hand to help out one of the biggest fishing contests on the bay wherever help was needed. Little did I know I would be helping update the live simulcast leaderboard!

I was standing around with a Michelada in hand talking to Rex Hudson (founder of Shallow Sport) and James Dunks (Former Captain Game Warden for the Rio Grande Valley) when Wes Hudson (President CEO of Shallow Sport) comes up and says “Brent do you know what you are doing today?” I replied 36- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - JUNE 2019

“no I’m here for whatever you need.” He then informed me I would be in the technical booth entering team weights for the leader board.

I responded with a laugh and said you’re joking right?” If you have ever been around the fishing tournament scene then chances are you know the highly competitive culture that exists amongst anglers. To be responsible for keeping score when cash prizes, bragging rights and trophies are handed out is a huge responsibility. Wes assured me he wasn’t so I made my way to the booth behind the stage where Michael Jones and Chase Smith were hooking up computers, cameras, and microphones. I got a quick tutorial on entering the total weights and updating the board.

Thanks to the technological talents of Michael Jones this was the first year the tournament would be live broadcast on Facebook for folks at home to see the contest vicariously. At first it looked difficult, but with a little practice and a lot of team work we were able to make it a big success.

Hats off to the Hudsons for taking a conservation minded approach to this year’s tournament by making a major rule change of each boat /team weighing in their biggest red, trout, and flounder as a team instead of individual entries. In the past the rule was each angler would weigh in 3 fish per person, but with a 1,000 anglers that was putting a strain on the fishery. The new rule would reduce fish kill by 80%, save more of the big breeder fish, and lead as an example to other tournaments in the area. The Lower Laguna Madre is a resource worth protecting for future generations and something we all need to conserve. When the dust finally settled the winning team out of 256 boats came in with a combined weight of 14.43 pounds. The team claiming this year’s grand champion status was captained by Chad Kinney, along with his wife Erika Kinney, Rick Bailey, and Randy Pierce.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Not only was this one of the best parties I have ever attended on the island it had to be the best awards ceremony I have ever witnessed giving out over $30,000.00 in prizes and several college scholarships. There were

navigational fish finders, boat stereo systems, power poles, trolling motors, multiple $300.00 custom rods, multiple $300.00 reels and most impressive of all a Shallow Sport boat giveaway to one lucky raffle ticket holder. The master of ceremonies was a fellow named Diesel and he was a rock star up on stage calling out all the winners and telling stories about the tournament and characters who fished year after year. This was definitely a family under one roof at Louie’s Backyard. The food was excellent and all you could eat. The parties and after parties were like Spring Break for fisherman. I will definitely be coming back for this one and you should too if you haven’t already. See you on the water my friends.

The Lost Camp On Brazos Island By: Steve Hathcock

three feet of sand. The camp remained buried for the next 70 years or so until the hurricane of 1933 came ashore near the same area. Being the first visitors to arrive after the storm, Jennings and his men were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of artifacts that littered the beach.

A few years ago, I received a packet of photos and old periodicals from Jim Jennings (now deceased) of Balboa Island California. His father, Jim Jennings Senior, was the engineer in charge of building the Brownsville Ship Channel during the 1930s.

Oftentimes the younger Jennings, would send me faded old photos along with a hand written tale his experiences while growing up in the sleepy little fishing village now known as Port Isabel Texas.

After reviewing the photos, I picked up the letter and started to read....

“In September of 1933 my Father, Jim Jennings Sr., then a young Civil Engineer was sent by the Army Corps of Engineers to survey and report the damage done by a devastating hurricane which struck the coast of Texas near the mouth of the Rio Grande....”

My interest was now piqued. I am familiar with the site Jim was writing about having personally explored that area many times over the years.

The senior Jennings and his survey party were the first to arrive on the shores of Brazos Island located a few miles from Port Isabel Texas. Securing their boat in the now quiet waters of the Laguna Madre, Jim’s father and crew waded ashore near a point just south of the jetties on present day Boca Chica Beach.

The men were amazed to find the remains of an old military base (Brazos Santiago Depot) used by Union troops during the Civil War. (It was also from this point that the men of the 64th Colored Troops embarked on their ill fated attempt to capture Brownsville in May of 1865. The Northern troops lost that battle only to find out later that the war had ended some 5 weeks prior.)

A great storm sprang up in the Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 1867. Striking almost dead center of the encampment, the surging tide leveled all the buildings before overlaying the entire site with about 38- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - JUNE 2019

“My father had the advantage of getting the pick of the newly exposed relics.

They found barrels of raisins, cornmeal and salt bacon, all in a remarkable state of preservation, perhaps so, because of their sudden burial under the roiling sands. Hundreds of personal items were found including ink bottles, wine bottles and an old “Plantation Bitters” bottle. Scores of badly rusted rifles and pistols numerous uniform buttons, bullets and other relics from a time now long gone, lay scattered across a wide expanse of hard-packed sand.

A grave yard was also uncovered, exposing the skeletons of men who had died in the defense of their country. In those days dentists used gold to fill a cavity or make a tooth. Needless to say, little time was wasted collecting the gold from the old jaw bones.

With-in a week of the storm, the area was inundated by newsmen, relic hunters and sight-seers. My father carefully stored the relics he had recovered, with the intention of giving them to the Brownsville Historical Society. There was no museum at that time and no safe place to store the relics so in 1948 my father gave them to me. I displayed many of the relics in my place of business in Balboa Island California and the collection would generate much interest to my customers. My father retired to Padre Island for some years and would often show people the exact site of the old encampment.”
