BOBCAT BITS

Texas State has already set a brand new record for the Bobcats in the young season. The Texas State fans helped the Bobcats out when they all came out for thelast match against Baylor to set a new attendance record of 3,591. The new record blows away the previous record of 2,389 set in 2009 against Texas Tech. In addition to the numbers, the crowd brought plenty of energy for the Bobcats.

STARTING STRONG

The Bobcats put together a 2-1 start to the season at the Houston Cougar Classic. Texas State took down Lamar in five sets and, after dropping to ACC foe Wake Forest, beat Houston on the road, 3-1.

ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS

Texas State had two Bobcats earn All-Tournament honors at the Houston Cougar Classic. Shelby Vas Matt and Lauren Kirch each took home the honor. Vas Matt tallied a double-double in each match while Kirch had 41 kills in the tournament. WWW.TXSTATEBOBCATS.COM

BOBCAT BITS CONTINUED... SUN BELT CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

MATCH HIGHS

HITTING PERCENTAGE (MIN. 12 KILLS)

In addition to Lauren Kirch’s All-Tournament honor, she was also named the SBC Freshman ofthe Week. She struck 41 kills on the weekend highlighted by a 19-kill, .586 hitting percentage performance in a win against Houston. She also led the Bobcats with 14 kills against Lamar. In addition to her offensive prowess, she finished the weekend with 14 digs (1.08 per set) and eight blocks. She averaged 3.15 kills per set.

NEWCOMERS ON THE SQUAD

Speaking of freshmen, the Bobcats welcome 10 newcomers to the 2014 squad after losing just four letterwinners from the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship squad. Texas State is already seeing the benefits of the strong group the team has added. Lauren Kirch leads the team in kills with 49 and has been the top freshman to stand out. In addition, Alex Silver, a defensive specialist from Coppell, has logged significant time playing in 13 of the 17 sets the Bobcats have played so far and tallied 22 digs, fifth on the team. Freshman middle blocker Kathryn Turman has also seen time for Texas State. The Bobcats are still waiting for a contribution from sophomore defensive specialist/libero Brenna Lyles, a Nebraska transfer, as she recovers from minor injury. As the season progresses, Texas State could see work from right side hitter Jordan Kohl, middle blocker Morgan Eason, right side Samantha Sellars and defensive specialist Meagan Mellenbruch.

.586 (19- 2-29) .310 (12- 3-29) .268 (15- 4-41)

Texas State is coming off the team’s first ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in 2013. The Bobcats have repeated as tournament champions just once, in 2004 and 2005, going back-to-back in the Southland Conference. In its effort to repeat, Texas State will have to do it without three major contributors from the 2013 squad: Amari Deardorff, Ashlee Hilbun and Molly Ahrens. Texas State is also incorporating 10 newcomers in 2014.

SETTER OF THE YEAR

Senior setter Caylin Mahoney was named Most Outstanding Player in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and that respect carried over into 2014 when a poll of the SBC coaches awarded Mahoney with the title of SBC Preseason Setter of the Year. She was the only Bobcat recognized on the Sun Belt’s preseason team. Last year, with 1,256 assists, Mahoney upped her career total at Texas State to 1,591 to move into the top five all-time at Texas State.

before becoming the head coach at New Braunfels High School. Chisum led the Unicorns to a Class 3-A State runner-up finish in 1976, coaching former Texas volleyball and basketball standout Nell Fortner, who later served as head coach of the 2000 USA Olympic team that won a Gold Medal. Fortner recently retired as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn. In 1980, Chisum was named Texas State’s fifth head volleyball coach and is still going strong more than three decades later. Chisum’s influence in volleyball reaches far beyond Texas State. She serves as a member of both the NCAA and American Volleyball Coaches Association voting committees for regional and national rankings. She has also been a teaching clinician for various volleyball programs and camps throughout the United States. In 2011, Chisum was named a Texas State Distinguished Alumni. The award dates back to 1959 when it was presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, a U.S. senator at the time. It acknowledges outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the individual’s chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level. In 1994, Chisum became the first female to be accepted for membership in the “T” Association’s Hall of Honor. During her intercollegiate days at Texas State, Chisum played on the softball and tennis teams. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest award a letterwinner at Texas State can receive. Chisum also co-authored a book titled “Developing a Successful Volleyball Program” with former Bobcat volleyball player Stephanie Scott Jordan.
