What You Need to Know Fourth All Time Davis made his mark on the defensive end last season. Davis held NBA First Round Draft Pick Elfrid Payton to 10 points at Strahan Coliseum. Davis picked up four more steals in his first game this year, giving him 138 for his career.
Bring on the Newcomers Texas State will have nine newcomers to the team this year, with six transfer players and three freshmen right out of high school. The team’s lone four-year transfer is D.J. Brown who was a three-year starter at San Jose State and played against Texas State when the Bobcats were in the WAC. Five junior college transfers are JaMarcus Weatherspoon, Cameron Naylor, Ojai Black, Ethan Montalvo and Ed Seay. The five come from all around the country, ranging from Missouri, Florida, Nebraska, and Texas. The three freshman are all Texas products with Brian Herring, Jonathan Wiley and Austin Evans. Evans is one of the bigger players in Texas State history at 6-11. He will need to put on some muscle as he is 225 and is viewed as a player who can be dominant in time. In the first game of the year, the newcomers combined for 28 points, led by 15 from senior point guard D.J. Brown. Cameron Naylor also had six points and four rebounds. Familiar Faces Texas State will have five returners from last year’s team. Coming back from the 201314 team are Wes Davis, Emani Gant, Victor Bermudez, Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and Kendell Ramlal. Davis and Bermudez are the two returning seniors, joining Brown who only has just one season of eligibility. The five returners averaged a combined 26.0 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game. All-Sun Belt Second-Team Selection Junior forward Emani Gant was named to the All-Sun Belt Second-Team. Gant is coming off a season in which he averaged 8.9 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Both totals are most among returning players from last year’s team. He began his career with a 19-point game at Houston in his first Division I game. Gant finished second in the Sun Belt with a field goal percentage of .546 (118-of-216). “Emani had some very good games last year, and then struggled in others,” Kaspar said. “He accumulated fouls in several games which left him on the bench last year more than I’d hoped. He has to become more a consistent offensive player and become a better rebounder and defender. He is very capable of doing this. He has gotten himself in pretty good shape. He has improved his offensive game.”
Below is where Davis stands all-time at Texas State. 1. 192 David Sykes 1999-03 2. 161 Donte Mathis 1995-99 3. 154 Ryan White 2007-11 4. 138 Wes Davis 2011-pres. 5. 123 Brandon Bush 2005-09 6. 114 Terry Conerway 2002-04 7. 106 Dameon Sansom 1993-97 8. 104 Kevin Stiner 1985-89 9. 101 Brandon Thomas 2006-08 10. 99 Jeff Foster 1995-99 Learning to Win the Close Games Texas State’s record of 8-23 last season can be misleading in some ways. According to Ken Pomeroy, one of the leading advanced statistical websites in college basketball, the Bobcats were ranked as the sixth unluckiest team last season. According to KenPom.com Luck is defined as “A measure of the deviation between a team’s actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them” Texas State had 10 games decided by six points or fewer, within two possessions and went 1-9 in those games. Skilled Shooters The Bobcats hope to have better shooting this season, and have brought in players to help that cause, along with developing their returners. Two of the players that are most thought to be able to help the shooting are Ethan Montalvo and the improvement of Victor Bermudez. “Ethan is an excellent shooting guard,” Kaspar said. “He is a very tough young man who knows how to play without the basketball. He is one of the better shooters I’ve coached in my career. We will need his shooting ability.” Bermudez, struggled from the field last season, but the team hopes he will look more like the player who was recruited when he was top-10 in the country in junior college with 98 made three-pointers, good for seventh. “Vic is another senior guard that has shown a lot of improvement for us this year,” Kaspar said. “I’m hopeful he will be a big help to us this year. His attitude has been great, his work ethic has been great, and he’s shown good leadership in preseason and summer workouts.”

vs. Lamar, Nov. 19 Texas State and Lamar used to meet twice annually while in the Southland Conference together.
Sign of Changing Times • Texas State’s come from behind win at Seattle was memorable for a number of reasons. • The win marked the first time under Danny Kaspar the Bobcats came from behind at halftime to win, trailing 33-26 at break. The Bobcats were 0-15 when down after 20 minutes last season. • The Bobcats were outrebounded by just one on Friday, 27-26. However, it marked just the second time in 15 tries under Kaspar the Bobcats won when on the losing end of the boards. Suffocating Defense • Texas State put the locks on Seattle’s offense early in the second half, forcing four turnovers in the first four possessions. • Overall, the Bobcats limited the Redhawks to just 20 points in the second half. The 20 points allowed were the second fewest allowed in a half under Danny Kaspar. Below are the fewest points allowed in a half under Kaspar. Opponent Points allowed Half Date ULM 9 2nd 1/11/14 Seattle 20 2nd 11/14/14 Cedarville 21 1st 12/4/13 UT Arlington 22 1st 1/8/14 W. Kentucky 22 1st 2/27/14 Limiting Attempts • A reason for Texas State’s win over Seattle was its ability to limit the Redhawks to getting many looks at the basket. • Seattle attempted just 41 shots for the game, tying for the second fewest under Coach Kaspar, along with a game against UT Arlington last season. • The fewest shots against the Bobcats under Kaspar is 40 by Tulane last year. • The Bobcats were aided by 18 turnovers on Friday night, ending Redhawk possessions. In the games against Tulane and UTA last year, the Bobcats’ opponents each committed 19 turnovers, most under Kaspar Stealing the Ball • Friday night the Bobcats had 12 steals, the most under head coach Danny Kaspar. • The Bobcats have now had 10+ steals three times under Kaspar. • Contributing to the cause was Wes Davis who had four steals of his own, giving him 138 for his career. • Davis’ four steals put him tops among the Sun Belt with an average of 4.0 per game this season.
