SMITH NAMED SBC DEFENSIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Senior libero Sierra Smith was on a rampage on the back line for the Bobcats this season, and was recognized for it Oct. 5. After averaging 6.50 digs per set in a four-set match against Little Rock to help the Bobcats bust a 26-match conference winning streak for the Trojans, Smith finished the week averaging 6.29 digs per set with 44 digs to earn the first conference honor of the season for the Bobcats. She has double-digit digs in 12 of 18 matches so far this season with a high of 31 digs at UTSA. Before her best week, Smith tallied 23 digs each in back-to-back sweeps for the Bobcats against Georgia State and Appalachian State, which is an average of 7.67 digs per set. She owns the Texas State record for most digs in a season and for most digs in a match and is the leading digger in the Texas State career record book.

She was named the MVP for the Delta Zeta Classic earlier this season. In three matches in Kansas, Kohl put down 32 kills for a 2.91 kills per set average with a .266 hitting percentage. She added 13 blocks to lead the Bobcats in both categories, averaging 1.18 blocks per set. She also had six digs.

Texas State has shown why the team was chosen to finish second, even receiving first place votes, in the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason rankings with a great start to the conference season. The Bobcats put down Georgia State, 3-1, and followed with an outstanding sweep of UL Lafayette for a 2-0 start in Sun Belt action. After that, the Bobcats went on the road to sweep Georgia State in the team’s first conference road match of the season before falling to Appalachian State. Texas State rebounded, however, with an impressive 3-1 win over Little Rock to bust a 26-match conference winning streak for the Trojans and followed with a sweep of Georgia Southern and a five-set win over UT Arlington.

POINTS

Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Kirch, coming off a freshman season that led to an All-Sun Belt Conference selection, did not play from August 29 against SMU until the September 26th match at Appalachian State due to injury. She is making her way back after playing in three sets at Appalachian State, two sets against Georgia Southern and all five against UT Arlington. She tallied four kills at App State and a season-high five kills vs. Georgia Southern. Fortunately for the Bobcats, Texas State’s depth at middle blocker has served them well. Junior Morgan Lewis and freshman Madison Daigle have both stepped up to play well for the Bobcats.

At the Delta Zeta Classic, Jordan Kohl led the Bobcats in kills and even hit .900 in one match against Prairie View A&M to set a new Texas State record and help the team to a record-high hitting percentage of .554. For her efforts, she was recognized as the Delta Zeta Classic’s MVP. In addition to Kohl, Jaliyah Bolden earned her second All-Tournament honor of the young season after being recognized at the SMU/TCU Crosstown Challenge. Finally, Shelby Vas Matt also made the Delta Zeta Classic All-Tournament team. She was recognized on two all-tournament teams last season and earned her first honor this year.

BOLDEN EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS

Newcomer Jaliyah Bolden wasted no time making an impact for the Bobcats. She led the team in kills on opening weekend, finishing with 19 in three matches for a 2.11 kill per set average. She also led in blocks with nine for a three-block average over three matches, tallying three solo blocks and six block assists. She also added an ace and three digs in her All-Tournament bid at the SMU/TCU Crosstown Challenge.

KOHL RECOGNIZED IN THE PRESEASON

Sophomore Jordan Kohl was recognized by the Sun Belt Conference in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. After being selected All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team as well as the SBC Freshman of the Year last season, the SBC coaches tabbed Kohl as part of the Sun Belt’s All-Preseason Team.

the United States. In 2011, Chisum was named a Texas State Distinguished Alumni. The award dates back to 1959 when it was presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, a U.S. senator at the time. It acknowledges outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the individual’s chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level. In 1994, Chisum became the first female to be accepted for membership in the “T” Association’s Hall of Honor. During her intercollegiate days at Texas State, Chisum played on the softball and tennis teams. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest award a letterwinner at Texas State can receive. Chisum has passed along some of her volleyball knowledge in writing. She co-authored a book titled “Developing a Successful Volleyball Program” with former Bobcat volleyball player Stephanie Scott Jordan.
