BOBCAT BITS 2013 SBC CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT REVIEW

Texas State enters the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament with a target on the team’s back as the Bobcats won the tournament last season to clinch the SBC’s only spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats beat UL Lafayette in four set to start the tournament then swept Arkansas State and UT Arlington to win Head Coach Karen Chisum and Texas State Volleyball the ninth conference championship in team history. Both Amari Deardorff and Ashlee Hilbun were named to the SBC AllTournament Team while Caylin Mahoney took home the Most Outstanding Player award.

ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS

In just their first seasons at Texas State, freshmen Jordan Kohl and Lauren Kirch earned Sun Belt AllConference nods, both making the SBC All-Conference Second Team. In addition, Kohl took home the SBC Freshman of the Year award after twice being named the SBC Freshman of the Week this season. The duo led Texas State in kills during conference play while Kirch led the team in blocks and service aces against conference opponents and Kohl was third in blocks during conference play.

CHISUM NOTCHES 800TH CAREER VICTORY

Texas State Head Coach Karen Chisum earned her 800th career victory with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Troy on Saturday, Nov. 15. With the win, Chisum is just the 13th coach to reach 800 wins in NCAA Division I history and the 22nd collegiate volleyball coach ever to reach it. Only nine other coaches across all three NCAA divisions have done it with one team like she did. She is sixth in career wins among active NCAA Division I coaches and 11th among active coaches in all of the NCAA. Her last landmark victory was her 750th win over Seattle on Sept. 29, 2012, and she won her 700th game with a 3-0 sweep over Prairie View A&M on Sept. 7, 2010.

ANOTHER SBC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Texas State’s Jordan Kohl is earned her second Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week honor of the season. Her award makes it the the third one for Texas State this year as Lauren Kirch also won it. Kohl had an impressive week, leading the Bobcats in kills on an undefeated 2-0 week. She averaged 4.00 kills and 1.14 blocks per set with 28 kills and eight blocks for the week. She was devastating in a 3-1 victory over Georgia State with 18 kills on a .615 hitting percentage and followed it with 10 more kills in a sweep of Troy with a .421 hitting percentage. She added five blocks against Troy and three more against Georgia State to put together a strong week for the freshman from San Angelo.

BEST CONFERENCE START SINCE 2003

Texas State started Sun Belt Confernece play with a six-match winning streak this season. It is Texas State’s best conference start since 2003 when the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run to start conference play, leading to an 18-2 Southland Conference record and a regular season conference championship.
