What You Need to Know Cam I Am Junior forward Cameron Naylor has impressed during his first four games of the season. Against Howard Payne he scored 18 points and added 16 rebounds. He was the first Bobcats to achieve both milestones in the same game since Tony Bishop in 2010. For the season, Naylor is averaging 9.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game (8th in Sun Belt). He also has contributed three blocks, all of which came against Lamar.
All-Conference Performer Junior forward Emani Gant was named to the All-Sun Belt SecondTeam. Gant is coming off a season in which he averaged 8.9 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Both totals are most among returning players from last year’s team. He began his career with a 19-point game at Houston in his first Division I game. Gant finished second in the Sun Belt with a field goal percentage of .546 (118-of-216). Gant has begun the year in fine form, picking up his first double-double of the year on Nov. 19with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He was named the Elgin Baylor Class MVP at Seattle with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Gant currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in steals (3.7) and is in the top 10 in several other categories: Scoring 14.7 ppg (8th), Rebounds - 8.0 (5th), Field Goal pct - .545 (5th), Assists - 3.7 (6th), Free Throw pct: .800 (8th), Blocks - 1.3 (6th)
Fourth All Time Davis made his mark on the defensive end last season. Davis held NBA First Round Draft Pick Elfrid Payton to 10 points at Strahan Coliseum. Davis picked up nine more steals in his first game this year, and has 143 for his career.
Below is where Davis stands all-time at Texas State. 1. 192 David Sykes 1999-03 2. 161 Donte Mathis 1995-99 3. 154 Ryan White 2007-11 4. 143 Wes Davis 2011-pres.
Great Defense The Bobcats held Howard Payne to 39 points, marking the 15th time in Danny Kaspar’s career he has held a team to 40 points or less. The Bobcats have now held two opponents under 40 points in the last two years, after previously not holding an opponent to under 40 since 2003-04 when the team held Nicholls to 37 and Texas Lutheran to 39. The 26.4 percent from the field by Howard Payne tied the lowest opponent field goal percentage last season, when ULM was an identical 14-of-53. No Points for You As is usual for Danny Kaspar, the Texas State defense finds itself atop the rankings for points allowed per game. The Bobcats have allowed 55 points or fewer in three of their first four games, after doing so just four times all last year. The Bobcats are allowing an average of 56.8 points per game, which is the lowest in the Sun Belt by nearly three points per game and ranks 29th in the country.
Turning the Opposition Over Texas State has been stifling through its first four games in taking the ball away from its opponents. The Bobcats are averaging 17.0 turnovers defensively, after causing Howard Payne to turn it over 18 times on Sunday. The 17.0 turnovers have calculated to a turnover on 26.3 percent of opponents’ possessions, which is 13th best in the country. Thus far in Kaspar’s tenure, the Bobcats are 5-2 when forcing 17+ turnovers from their opponents. This season has marked the first time the Bobcats have done it in back-to-back games, doing so against Seattle (18) and Lamar (20).
Best in Decades • The Bobcats current 3-1 start is just the fourth time since the 1993-94 season the team has started that strong. • Texas State got off to a 2-0 start this year, much better than the 0-5 start last season in Coach Kaspar’s first season. • This year marks the first time that the Bobcats have opened the season 2-0 against two Division I opponents since the 1998-99 season when the team beat WisconsinGreen Bay and Baylor. • Defensively, the Bobcats have also been their best in 16 years, allowed just 107 combined points through the first two games. • That total is the lowest since allowing 106 in the 2-0 start in 1998 as well. Sign of Changing Times • Texas State’s come from behind win at Seattle was memorable for a number of reasons. • The win marked the first time under Danny Kaspar the Bobcats came from behind at halftime to win, trailing 33-26 at break. The Bobcats were 0-15 when down after 20 minutes last season.
