Texas State begins its second season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and is playing an NCAA Division I FBS schedule for the third straight year. This marks the first time that the Bobcats will open a season with a home game since 2009 when Texas State defeated Angelo State, 48-28. The Bobcats opened the last four seasons at Houston in 2010, at Texas Tech in 2011, at Houston in 2012 and at Southern Miss in 2013.

The Bobcats come into the game with a two-game winning streak in season openers, beating Houston 30-13 in 2012, and Southern Miss, 22-15 last season This marks the 107th season for Texas State football. The Bobcats played their first game in 1904, but did not play any games from 1943-45 due to World War II.

BOBCATS BY THE NUMBERS 2- The 2014 season marks the second straight season that Texas State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. It is the first time since 2010 that the Bobcats will play in the same conference during two straight years since 2010.

Texas State was in the Southland Conference in 2010, an independent in 2011, the WAC in 2012 before joining the SBC in 2013.

45 - Texas State returns 45 lettermen from the 2013 season.

The Bobcats have 22 lettermen returning on offense and 20 returnees on defense. In addition, Texas State has both kicking specialists back from last season.

203- Head coach Dennis Franchione enters the 2014 campaign with 203 career victories. Franchione, who has a 203-121-2 career record, is one of four NCAA Division I FBS active coaches with 200 career victories.

107- Texas State begins its 107th season of playing football in 2014.

2009- This marks the first season that Texas State will open their schedule with a home game since 2009.

MEDIA POLICIES FOR BOBCAT FOOTBALL WEEKLY PRESS LUNCHEON Head coach Dennis Franchione and selected Bobcat players meet with the media at Texas State’s weekly media luncheon each Tuesday preceding a game in the J. Garland Warren Room on the second level of Bobcat Stadium’s End Zone Complex. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and followed by interviews.

ADDITIONAL INTERVIEWS In addition to Tuesday’s media luncheon, Texas State student-athletes and coach Franchione will be available for in-person or phone interviews after practice on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Requests should be directed to Rick Poulter.

All interview requests must be coordinated through the Texas State Sports Information Office with, hopefully, a 24-hour advance notice. Student-athlete’s phone numbers will not be given out. Coaches and student-athletes are not available for interviews the day before a game or on game day.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS The Texas State locker room is located inside the End Zone Complex at Bobcat Stadium. The visiting locker room is located in the North Side Complex.

Texas State head coach and requested players are available in the team meeting room approximately 10 minutes after each game. Texas State’s locker room is closed following each game and practice.

Texas State University is committed to a policy of equal access for both male and female reporters and photographers.

Visiting SID’s will establish media interview and locker room admittance policies for their respective teams.

PRACTICE COVERAGE Practices are open to members of the media, but Texas State does require media members to contact Rick Poulter if they plan to attend. A member of the SID staff is on hand at every practice to assist the media. There is access for photographers and videographers to shoot photographs and video during the first 50 minutes of practice.

All interview requests will be coordinated after practice is complete.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Working media and photographer credentials for Texas State’s home games will be handled by assistant athletics director and sports information director Rick Poulter.

Requests should be made in writing by sports editors or sports directors of accredited media outlets on company letterhead. Requests should be made as early as possible and should be limited to working media only. Requests made within three days of the game may not be considered.

Credentials will be mailed to the requesting individual or organization if time permits or sent to the visiting school’s sports information director for distribution. Media parking at Bobcat Stadium is available on a limited basis in Lots 3 and 4 of the stadium and at Mill Street. Requests for parking passes should be made well in advance to the Sports Information Office.

TEXAS STATE PRESS BOX The Texas State Press Box, located on the fourth level of the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium, opens three hours prior to each game. The working press box, coaches’ booths and radio/TV booths are located on the same level.

Media credentials are required for admittance to the press box and for meals.

Game notes and programs are provided prior to the game. Game statistics and quotes are provided during and after the game. The working press area has complimentary wireless internet access available. On game day, Texas State telecommunications representatives are on hand to assist media members.

SIDELINES Texas State follows guidelines set forth by the NCAA Public Relations Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the American Football Coaches Association and the National Press Photographers Association.

Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must have credentials visible at all times. In an effort to ensure the best possible working conditions for media photographers, uniformed security personnel will be patrolling the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved in coverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be in effect in the press box.

Texas State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Notes TEXAS STATE ON THE AIR Texas State’s football games are broadcast live on Radio Network (105.3 FM) in the Austin and San Marcos areas, KTSW (89.9 FM) in San Marcos and News Talk (930 AM) in San Antonio.

Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane call the action for each Bobcat Football game. Ben Campos (home games) and John McElfresh (away games) serve as sideline reporters. Texas State games start with a one-hour pregame show and are followed by a 15 minute postgame show.

In addition to those areas, Bobcat fans can watch live video streaming for select home games or listen to the Bobcat Radio Network for home and away games online at TxStateBobcats.com.

TEXAS STATE IN SEASON OPENERS The Bobcats enter the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game with a record of 58-39-2 in season-opening games after winning their last two season-openers at Houston (30-13 in 2012) and Southern Miss (22-15 in 2013). The two victories gives Texas State eight wins in their last 10 season-opening games. The school’s longest winning streak in season openers is seven games in 1962-68 and 1978-84.

WHO’S BACK Texas State returns 44 lettermen from the 2013 season in which Texas State became bowl eligible with six wins in its second season as member of the NCAA Division I FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats have 22 lettermen returning on offense and 20 returnees on defense. In addition, Texas State has a punter and kicker returning on special teams.

TEXAS STATE IN HOME OPENERS This season marks the first time in five years that the Bobcats will open their season with a home game since 2009.

COACH FRAN RADIO SHOW The Coach Fran Radio Show airs on 104.9 the Horn in Austin and San Marcos each Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The show also airs live on News Talk 930 KLUP in San Antonio.

The show takes place at Bobcat Nation Sports Bar and Grill in San Marcos. Coach Franchione joins host Brant Freeman, along with selected assistant coaches and players as they preview each upcoming game throughout the 2014 season.

TEXAS STATE IN HOME OPENERS Texas State enters the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game looking to win its 18th home opener in the last 19 years after defeating Prairie View A&M 28-3 last season. The Bobcats had won 17 straight home openers dating back to 1996 before dropping the first home game in 2012 against Texas Tech. Texas State has an all-time record of 44-21-1 in home openers dating back to 1948.

TEXAS STATE SETS ATTENDANCE RECORD Texas State played in front of the four of the seven largest crowds in Bobcat Stadium history during the 2013 season. The Bobcats had the second-largest crowd against Wyoming with an attendance of 22,015.

The third largest crowd of 20,136 watched Texas State play Prairie View A&M in its 2013 home opener. Below is a look at the Top 10 single game attendance records at Bobcat Stadium.

INSIDE BOBCAT FOOTBALL TV SHOW Texas State Athletics has teamed with Time Warner Cable Sports, Fox Sports Southwest and Austin’s CW 35 to highlight Texas State‘s football team each week on “All In”. The 30-minute show features head coach Dennis Franchione, hosts Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane, along with the Bobcat coaching staff and players. The show airs Thursday’s on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel at 6:00 p.m. It also will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest each Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., and each Saturday morning on CW 35 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

104.9 THE HORN RADIO SNAPSHOT On the drive home from work, fans can tune in every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. to 104.9 FM in Austin/San Marcos to listen to Erin Hogan interview Coach Franchione, beginning August 27.

BOBCAT MINUTE Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, during “Afternoons with Bucky and Erin” on 104.9 the Horn, from 5:00-6:36 a 60-second spot will air, informing the public about all the news going on in the Texas State athletic department.

TEXAS STATE IN BOBCAT STADIUM Texas State enters Saturday’s game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with an all-time record of 11078 in home games at Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats posted a 4-2 record in home games during two of the last three years after winning four home games during just one other time (2009) since 2005.

The four wins in 2013 marks the 14th time that the Bobcats have won four home games since the stadium opened in 1981.

Texas State is 11-7 in home games during the last three seasons at Bobcat Stadium.

SECOND TIME AROUND Texas State’s football team will be playing in the second year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. It marks the first season since 2010 that the Bobcats will play back-to-back seasons in the same conference. Texas State played its final season in the Southland Conference in 2010 before playing the 2011 campaign as an independent. The Bobcats were a member of the WAC in 2012 before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.

COACH FRAN BEGINS FOURTH SEASON Dennis Franchione begins the fourth year of his second tenure at Texas State in 2014, and enters the season as one of four active NCAA Division I FBS coaches with 200 career victories. Coach Fran enters the 2014 campaign with a career record of 203-121-2. Ironically, the two ties came in his first two games as a head coach. Last season, the Bobcats became bowl eligible with six victories in their second season as a member of the FBS.

Texas State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Notes EIGHT BOBCATS GARNER ALL-SBC HONORS The Sun Belt Conference announced that eight Texas State football players have been selected to the league’s preseason All-Sun Belt Conference teams by the SBC head coaches and a panel of selected media members.

Senior linebackers Michael Orakpo and David Mayo join senior cornerback Craig Mager and senior place kicker Jason Dann as All-SBC FirstTeam selections. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones, junior running back Robert Lowe, junior offensive tackle Adrian Bellard and junior return specialist Brandon Smith were named to the All-SBC Second-Team.

Orakpo tallied 71 tackles and led the Bobcats with 4.5 quarterback sacks, 10 tackles for losses and 3 forced fumbles.

Mayo ranked among the nation’s Top 40 players with 8.9 tackles per game and ranked second among SBC leaders with four interceptions last year.

Mager enters 2014 having made 36 consecutive starts after leading the Bobcats with nine pass breakups. He was eighth among league leaders with nine passes defended.

Dann made nine of his 10 field goal attempts, including all five tries inside 40 yards. He kicked four field goals against South Alabama to tie a school record and scored 15 points in Texas State’s 33-31 victory.

Lowe is the top returning rushing leader from last season after running for 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 carries in 2013.

Jones had the third-highest completion percentage in school history when he completed 100 of his 161 passes for 1,130 yards and 8 touchdowns in his seven starts.

Bellard enters the 2014 season after being named the Most Improved Offensive player following spring practice last May after starting all 12 games as a true sophomore and playing in 11 games in 2011 as a true freshman. Last season, he helped pave the way for Texas State to rush for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, and he registered 16 knockdown blocks as a strong-side tackle.

ORAKPO NAMED TO BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker Michael Orakpo is the only player from the Sun Belt Conference named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award that is given to the nation’s top linebacker. Orakpo also has been named a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Athlon, USA Today and Sporting News preseason magazines after being named Honorable Mention AllSBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team

He led the Bobcats and ranked seventh among SBC leaders with 4.5 sacks and was among Top 10 SBC leaders with 10 tackle for losses of 38 yards in his first season at Texas State. Orakpo also forced three fumbles to tie for second among SBC leaders. His 71 tackles last season are among the top seven returning players in 2014.

MAYO NAMED TO LOMBARDI AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker David Mayo was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Club of Houston’s Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. The Lombardi Award is presented to the college lineman of the year by the Rotary Club of Houston and includes 123 players from 76 different institutions, including seven from the Sun Belt Conference schools.

Mayo also has been named 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Lindy’s and Athlon and a Second-Team selection by Phil Steele after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team by Phil Steele and College Sports Madness in 2013.

He led the SBC and ranked 12th nationally in solo tackles with an average of 6.0 per game, ranked 13th nationally and fourth among Sun Belt Conference leaders in total tackles with an average of 8.9 per game. In addition, he averaged 10.0 tackles in conference only games to rank third among league leaders and ranked second among league leaders in interceptions with four.

LOWE NOMINATED FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD LIST Junior running back Robert Lowe also was a preseason nomination for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back. Lowe is the top returning rushing leader from last season after running for 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 carries in 2013.

BRADLEY MILLER NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Bradley Miller has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Miller is one of 42 FBS tight ends and one of three tight ends from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

He enters his senior season after catching 24 passes for 311 yards. He also was named a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Third-Team selection by Phil Steele. Miller had a season-best of seven receptions for 52 yards against Western Kentucky, caught a 49-yard pass against Wyoming and recorded three catches for 22 yards versus Southern Miss.

SMITH AND GAINES NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST A pair of Texas State kickoff return specialists Brandon Smith and Jafus Gaines have been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season.

Smith became one of 13 players in NCAA history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a single game when he recorded returns of 100 and 92 yards for touchdowns in Texas State’s first Sun Belt Conference game at UL Lafayette. He ranked fifth nationally and second among Sun Belt Conference leaders in kickoff returns overall after averaging 29.9 yards on 20 returns. His two touchdowns also set school records for most TDs scored on a kickoff return in a game, season and career. He also had three returns overall for a total of 211 yards against the Ragin Cajuns to earn SBC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. In addition to the UL Lafayette game, Smith recorded a 42-yard return at Troy, had a season-high six returns for 130 yards, including a 30-yard return against Western Kentucky and returned four kickoffs for 94 yards at Arkansas State.

Gaines returns from an injury-marred season after he suffered a leg injury during preseason camp. He ranked eighth nationally and led the WAC in kickoff returns after averaging 28.9 yards on 28 returns during the 2012 season. He had career-best 65-yard returns against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech that season. He returned six kickoffs for 237 yards against SFA and had three returns for 106 yards versus Louisiana Tech. Gaines also returned a kick 51 yards versus Idaho.

The CFPA is in its seventh season of recognition. The CFPA’s player and team performance index ranks success in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.

Texas State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Notes TEXAS STATE VS. ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF Saturday’s game will mark the first meeting between Texas State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Bobcats have played 22 games against a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference schools. Texas State owns an 11-2 record against Prairie View A&M after winning a 28-3 decision in 2013. The Bobcats also havea 9-0 mark against Texas Southern after posting a 52-18 victory in 2009.

OFFENSIVE TEAM NOTES

FOUR COACHES RETURN IN 2014 Texas State has four members of its coaching staff returning on offense in 2014. Mike Schultz returns as Texas State’s assistant head coach, cooffensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the fourth straight season after producing two of the top three most accurate passers in school history during the last three years.

Jeff Conway enters his third season as the cooffensive coordinator, running backs and tight ends coach after producing a two of the top 10 rushing leaders in the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.

Jason Johnson also is in his fourth season as the wide receivers coach and offensive graduate assistant Carter English is in his second year of coaching Texas State’s tight ends.

BEDELL JOINS COACHING STAFF Brad Bedell also joined Texas State’s coaching staff as the offensive line after he coached one season at Arkansas State in 2013. Bedell comes to Texas State after producing a pair of Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference offensive linemen and helping the Red Wolves win a SBC title and the GoDaddy Bowl in 2014.

JONES RETURNS AS STARTING QUARTERBACK This season marks the first time Dennis Franchione has named his starting quarterback before preseason practice began since he returned to Texas State in 2011. Sophomore Tyler Jones enters the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game as Texas State’s starting quarterback after completing 100 of his 161 passes for 1,130 yards and eight touchdowns in 2013. Jones was the starting quarterback in seven games last season. He played in eight contests after making his first start against Wyoming and sitting out the final game of the season.

His 62.1 completion percentage ranked as the third-highest single season percentage in school history behind Shaun Rutherford and Bradley George. Rutherford holds the school record with 64.5 percent after completing 193-of-299 passes in 2012 and George had a 63.1 percentage after he completed 258-of-409 passes in 2009.

Last season, Texas State had four of its six wins with Jones starting at quarterback.

EXPERIENCE ON OFFENSIVE LINE This Texas State enters the 2014 season with a combined 85 starts on its offensive line. Senior guard Charlie Will Tuttle enters the season with a team-best 29 career starts, including 10 games last season. Matt Freeman has started 17 games at center during his career, including eight contests in 2013.

Adrian Bellard and Felix Romero started all 12 games last season. Ryan Melton started six games last season, while Jack Costello had three starts.

Senior center Collin Fissell has made four starts in his career, including three games in 2012, and Zach Crawford started five games in 2012..

200 YARDS RUSHING Texas State’s rushed over 200 yards in five games in 2013, including a season-best 296 yards versus Georgia State. Texas State also gained 256 yards versus Wyoming, 242 yards against Prairie View A&M, 234 yards against South Alabama and 233 yards at Troy.

TEXAS STATE’S GROUND ATTACK Texas State’s offense ranked 64th nationally and fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in rushing offense with an average of 171.5 yards per game after netting 233 yards rushing in its final game of the season at Troy.

Robert Lowe is the top returning rusher in the Sun Belt Conference this season and ranked second among league leaders with 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 yards.

Lowe, who was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 21, ran for a careerbest 177 yards and a TD on 21 carries in Texas State’s 24-17 victory over Georgia State.

He ran for 100 yards in four games overall last season. Lowe also gained 140 yards and scored a TD against ULM, 138 yards and a season-best three touchdowns versus Wyoming and 103 yards and a touchdown at Texas Tech.

His three touchdowns against Wyoming were the most by a Texas State back since Terrance Franks in 2011. He also caught a 23-yard touchdown pass at Southern Miss in the first game of the year.

NUTALL AMONG SBC LEADERS Chris Nutall also finished the 2013 season ranked 10th among the Sun Belt Conference rushing leaders after gaining 477 yards and six touchdowns on 83 carries.

Nutall scored two touchdowns in three games last season after accomplishing the feat against Prairie View A&M, Wyoming and Georgia State in 2013.

Nutall’s best rushing total in conference play was 90 yards on nine carries against Georgia State.

His best game overall last year was against Prairie View A&M when he ran for a career-best 132 yards on eight carries against Prairie View A&M. His 132 yards against Prairie View A&M also marked the first 100-yard game of his career and included a 77-yard run. That is tied for the 15th longest run in the nation this season.

Texas State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Notes THOMPSON NAMED DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR John Thompson joined Texas State’s coaching staff just before the start of spring practice in April 2014 after serving two seasons in the same position at Arkansas State. There, he helped guide the Red Wolves to a pair of Sun Belt Conference championships. Thompson also served as interim head coach each of the last two years when he led Arkansas State to victories over No. 25 Kent State and Ball State in the 2013 and 2014 GoDaddy Bowls.

RETURNING DEFENSIVE COACHES While Texas State has a new defensive coordinator, the Bobcats have four coaches returning as defensive assistant coaches. Mike Hudson enters his fourth season as the defensive line coach after the Bobcats recorded 77 tackles, 10 tackles for losses, seven quarterback sacks and six quarterback hurries from their defensive end positions.

In addition, Michael Odiari was named an All-SBC Third-Team selection by College Sports Madness.

Kyle Tatum enters his second season as the defensive tackles coach after his group accounted for 90 tackles, including 48 solo stops, 11 tackles for losses and four sacks.

Brad Franchione also returns as Texas State’s linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.

Last season, Franchione produced a pair of All-Sun Belt Conference linebackers in 2013 as Phil Steele chose both David Mayo and Michael Orakpo as AllSBC Second-Team selections. In addition, Mayo was tabbed an All-SBC Second-Team selection by College Sports Madness.

Jason Washington also returns for his seventh season overall at Texas State after rejoining the Bobcats’ coaching staff in 2011. Last season, he coached Craig Mager was named an All-Sun Belt Conference Third-Team selection by College Sports Madness after ranking eighth among league leaders with nine passes defended after breaking up nine passes.

DEFENSIVE NOTES opponents to a league low 4.2 yards per carry and was the only Sun Belt team not to give up a run over 50 yards.

Texas State held its opponents below 100 yards on the ground four times last season, including a season-best at Southern Miss when the Golden Eagles had just 23 yards on 24 attempts.

DEFENDING THE PASS The Bobcats also ranked second among Sun Belt teams and 50th nationally in pass defense efficiency with 123.0 and was fourth among league leaders and 58th nationally in overall defense after surrendering 396.7 yards overall.

QUARTERBACK PROBLEM Michael Orakpo terrorized quarterbacks last season finishing with a team-high 4.5 sacks. He had 10 tackles for loss in total, ranking in the top 10 in the Sun Belt.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK In the first game of the season against Southern Miss, David Mayo earned SBC Player of the Week honors for recording six total tackles, a sack and two interceptions. Mayo’s second interception came with five seconds to go to seal the win.

Mayo went on to finish the year with four interceptions to rank second in the league with 0.4 interceptions per game.

Earlier this season, he earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week after averaging 44.0 yards on four punts and 65.0 yards on five kickoffs as he continually pinned Georgia State back in its own territory. All four of Johnson’s punts landed inside Georgia State’s 20-yard line.

In 2013, Johnson also earned co-Punter of the Week honors by College Football Performance Awards after averaging 46.6 yards on nine punts against ULM in his first full game as a punter this season.

DANN NAMED SBC SPECIAL TEAMS POW Texas State’s Jason Dann also was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and was one of three players to earn the Lou Groza Award’s Stars of the Week award after tying a school record with four field goals and scoring 15 points in Texas State’s 33-31 victory over South Alabama. Dann kicked a game-deciding 41-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in the game.

Dann also kicked a season-best four extra points at Idaho. He enters the Troy game having 44 points after making an extra point against Western Kentucky.

Dann was successful on nine of his 10 field goal attempts after taking over the field goal and extra-point kicking duties at Louisiana. He kicked his first field goal as a Bobcat from 33 yards at Louisiana before booting 22-yard and 43-yard field goals versus ULM. He also kicked a 20-yard field goal against Georgia State. His first miss came against Western Kentucky.

LONGEST FIELD GOAL IN SCHOOL HISTORY Will Johnson also holds Texas State’s record for the longest field goal with a 54-yard kick against New Mexico State in 2012. DENNIS FRANCHIONE

Head Coach 29th Season as Head Coach Sixth Season as a coach at Texas State Pittsburg State, 1973 A proven winner who has led Texas State’s transition to the NCAA Division I FBS ranks, Dennis Franchione is in the fourth season of his second term as the Bobcats’ head coach.

Last season, Texas State became bowl eligible in just its second season of playing in the FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference, which finished the season as the toughest non-automatic qualifying conference in the nation. It also equaled the shortest time in which a school became bowl eligible in the FBS since Marshall in 1996.

Franchione enters his 29th season as a head coach and is one of four active head coaches with over 200 wins after reaching that plateau in 2013. He enters the 2014 campaign with a 203-121-2 career record, including a 29-29 mark as head coach at Texas State.

Prior to his return to Texas State, Franchione led his teams to nine conference championships and had the best divisional record during one season. In addition, his teams played in nine bowl games, four NAIA playoff games and one NCAA Division II playoff contest.

His collegiate head-coaching career began at Southwestern College in 1981, when he compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. In 1982, the Builders won nine games, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and beat Oklahoma Panhandle State 15-0 in the Sunflower Bowl.

It was Southwestern College’s first bowl game and the nine victories tied the school’s single-season record that was previously set in 1967. Following the record-setting season, Franchione went to Tennessee Tech, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 1983 and 1984 before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State.

During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and four Central States Intercollegiate Conference championships and one Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a combined record of 37-1. He was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year twice. His teams tied the school record with 11 victories in a season three times before breaking it with a 12-win campaign in 1989 when Pittsburg State joined the NCAA Division II ranks.

In 1990, Franchione took the reins of Texas State’s football program for the first time. He led the Bobcats to a 6-5 record in his first year, and that was Texas State’s first winning record as a member of the Southland Conference, the first winning season as a Division I FCS member and first winning season since 1984.

The following year, Franchione led the Bobcats to their second straight winning season, a feat that was not duplicated until Texas State had back-to-back winning seasons in 2008 and 2009.

After compiling a 13-9 record at Texas State during those two years, Franchione joined the FBS head coaching ranks for the first time when he took over New Mexico’s program.

Before his arrival, New Mexico had won just 26 of its previous 106 games.

During his six seasons with the Lobos, Franchione compiled an overall 33-36 record and had three winning seasons. He led the Lobos to their first winning record in 11 years with a 6-5 record in 1993. Franchione also guided New Mexico to its first back-to-back winning campaigns since 1971 when the Lobos posted a 6-5 record in 1996 and a 9-4 mark in 1997. The 1997 New Mexico team won the Western Athletic Conference’s Mountain Division with a 7-1 league record and played in the Insight.com Bowl in 1997. It was the school’s first bowl game since 1961. While he was at New Mexico, Franchione recruited and coached future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher during his freshman and sophomore seasons

in 1996 and 1997. Urlacher recorded over 102 tackles to rank second on the team in 1997.

Franchione also produced Third-Team All-American receiver Pascal Volz and a pair of WAC Offensive Players of the Year in quarterbacks Stoney Case (1994) and Graham Leigh (1997) while he was at New Mexico.

Following the Insight Bowl, Franchione moved to TCU in 1998 and quickly turned around the fortunes of the school’s football program.

Before his arrival, the Horned Frogs had finished the previous season with a 1-10 record. In his first year at the helm, Franchione led them to a 7-5 mark and a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl. The Horned Frogs scored a schoolrecord six defensive touchdowns, intercepted 12 passes and held opponents to an average of 19.6 points per game – the lowest average in over 30 years. His offense featured running back Basil Mitchell, who gained 1,111 yards and scored six touchdowns. Mitchell rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-19 win over USC. The next season, Franchione also led TCU to the inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl when LaDainian Tomlinson burst onto the national scene by leading the nation in rushing with 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns on 268 carries. The Horned Frogs posted two shutouts and led the Western Athletic Conference in every major defensive category. TCU won the WAC championship and upset No. 20 East Carolina 28-14 in the bowl game as Tomlinson ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. In 2000, Tomlinson was a Doak Walker Award winner and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Football News National Offensive Player of the Year and an unanimous All-American after running for 2,158 yards, the fourth-highest single season total in NCAA history. He also scored 22 touchdowns as TCU finished the season with a 10-1 record, a WAC championship and a second-straight berth to the Mobile Alabama Bowl. Defensively, the Horned Frogs allowed only 245.0 total yards and 9.6 points per game, ranking first in the nation in both categories.

Following the 2000 campaign, Franchione was named the head coach at Alabama after the Crimson Tide finished the previous season with a 3-8 record.

In his first season, he led the Tide to a 7-5 record and a 14-13 victory over Iowa State in the Independence Bowl, giving Alabama its first bowl victory in five years.

In 2002, he led the Crimson Tide to a 10-3 mark and placed first in the SEC West Division with a 6-2 league record. However, previous NCAA sanctions made Alabama ineligible to play in a bowl game and the SEC Championship Game. Following Alabama’s victory over Hawaii at the end of the regular season, Franchione returned to the State of Texas when he was named head coach at Texas A&M. During the next five seasons, his Aggies posted three winning records and played in three bowl games. Texas A&M finished the 2004 season with a 7-5 mark and played in the Cotton Bowl, the Aggies’ first bowl game in three seasons. His best season at the school came in 2006 when the Aggies won nine games and played in the Holiday Bowl. The next year, Texas A&M posted a 7-5 record and qualified to play in the Alamo Bowl. However, Franchione resigned as head coach prior to the bowl game and ended his tenure at the school with a 32-28 record.

His recruiting classes were ranked among the Top 13 nationally from 2003-05.

Franchione also worked in broadcasting for three years prior to his return to coaching at Texas State, including two seasons as an analyst for ESPN Radio in 2008 and 2009.

Born March 28, 1951 in Girard, Kan., he is a graduate of Pittsburgh State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and received an Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award. He and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Ashley and Libby. He also has a son, Brad. Brad and his wife, Rebecca, have two sons Wyatt and Gunnar and a daughter, Isabella. Franchione and Kim also formed the Coach Fran Charities, a nonprofit organization assists children with special needs and other charitable causes.
