SETTING THE SCENE The Texas State football team looks to win its second straight home game and improve its record to 2-0 this season when the Bobcats play host to Navy in a non-conference contest that is televised by ESPNews.

The game will be played on Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium and kicks off at 7:00 p.m.

Texas State opened its 2014 schedule with a 65-0 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Aug. 30. The 65 points were the most scored by the Bobcats since the final game of the 2012 season and it was the first shutout for the Bobcat defense since 2005.

Navy enters this week’s game with a 1-1 record after winning a 31-24 decision at Temple on Sept. 6 and falling 34-17 against Ohio State on Aug. 30 in Baltimore.

BOBCATS BY THE NUMBERS 2- The 2014 season marks the second straight season that Texas State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. It also is the first time the Bobcats are playing in the same conference during two straight years since 2010. Texas State was in the Southland Conference in 2010, an independent in 2011, the WAC in 2012 before joining the SBC in 2013.

3- The victory against ArkansasPine Bluff was Texas State’s third straight victory in season openers. The Bobcats also beat Houston, 30-12, in 2012 and Southern Miss, 22-15, in 2013.

204- Head coach Dennis Franchione enters the Navy game with 204 career victories. Franchione is one of four NCAA Division I FBS active coaches with 200 career victories.

107- Texas State begins its 107th season of playing football in 2014.

MEDIA POLICIES FOR BOBCAT FOOTBALL WEEKLY PRESS LUNCHEON Head coach Dennis Franchione and selected Bobcat players meet with the media at Texas State’s weekly media luncheon each Tuesday preceding a game in the J. Garland Warren Room on the second level of Bobcat Stadium’s End Zone Complex. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and followed by interviews.

ADDITIONAL INTERVIEWS In addition to Tuesday’s media luncheon, Texas State student-athletes and coach Franchione will be available for in-person or phone interviews after practice on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Requests should be directed to Rick Poulter.

All interview requests must be coordinated through the Texas State Sports Information Office with, hopefully, a 24-hour advance notice. Student-athlete’s phone numbers will not be given out. Coaches and student-athletes are not available for interviews the day before a game or on game day.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS The Texas State locker room is located inside the End Zone Complex at Bobcat Stadium. The visiting locker room is located in the North Side Complex.

Texas State head coach and requested players are available in the team meeting room approximately 10 minutes after each game. Texas State’s locker room is closed following each game and practice.

Texas State University is committed to a policy of equal access for both male and female reporters and photographers.

Visiting SID’s will establish media interview and locker room admittance policies for their respective teams.

PRACTICE COVERAGE Practices are open to members of the media, but Texas State does require media members to contact Rick Poulter if they plan to attend. A member of the SID staff is on hand at every practice to assist the media. There is access for photographers and videographers to shoot photographs and video during the first 50 minutes of practice.

All interview requests will be coordinated after practice is complete.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Working media and photographer credentials for Texas State’s home games will be handled by assistant athletics director and sports information director Rick Poulter.

Requests should be made in writing by sports editors or sports directors of accredited media outlets on company letterhead. Requests should be made as early as possible and should be limited to working media only. Requests made within three days of the game may not be considered.

Credentials will be mailed to the requesting individual or organization if time permits or sent to the visiting school’s sports information director for distribution. Media parking at Bobcat Stadium is available on a limited basis in Lots 3 and 4 of the stadium and at Mill Street. Requests for parking passes should be made well in advance to the Sports Information Office.

TEXAS STATE PRESS BOX The Texas State Press Box, located on the fourth level of the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium, opens three hours prior to each game. The working press box, coaches’ booths and radio/TV booths are located on the same level.

Media credentials are required for admittance to the press box and for meals.

Game notes and programs are provided prior to the game. Game statistics and quotes are provided during and after the game. The working press area has complimentary wireless internet access available. On game day, Texas State telecommunications representatives are on hand to assist media members.

SIDELINES Texas State follows guidelines set forth by the NCAA Public Relations Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the American Football Coaches Association and the National Press Photographers Association.

Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must have credentials visible at all times. In an effort to ensure the best possible working conditions for media photographers, uniformed security personnel will be patrolling the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved in coverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be in effect in the press box.

Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane call the action for each Bobcat Football game. Ben Campos (home games) and John McElfresh (away games) serve as sideline reporters. Texas State games start with a one-hour pregame show and are followed by a 15-minute postgame show.

COACH FRAN RADIO SHOW The Coach Fran Radio Show airs on 104.9 the Horn in Austin and San Marcos each Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The show also airs live on News Talk 930 KLUP in San Antonio.

The show takes place at Bobcat Nation Sports Bar and Grill in San Marcos. Coach Franchione joins host Brant Freeman, along with selected assistant coaches and players as they preview each upcoming game throughout the 2014 season.

INSIDE BOBCAT FOOTBALL TV SHOW Texas State Athletics has teamed with Time Warner Cable Sports, Fox Sports Southwest and San Antonio’s CW 35 to highlight Texas State‘s football team each week on “All In at Texas State”.

The 30-minute show features head coach Dennis Franchione, hosts Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane, along with the Bobcat coaching staff and players. The show airs Thursday’s on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel at 6:00 p.m. It also will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest each Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., and each Saturday morning on CW 35 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

104.9 THE HORN RADIO SNAPSHOT On the drive home from work, fans can tune in every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. to 104.9 FM in Austin/San Marcos to listen to Erin Hogan interview Coach Franchione, beginning August 27.

BOBCAT MINUTE Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, during “Afternoons with Bucky and Erin” on 104.9 the Horn, from 5:00-6:36 a 60-second spot will air, informing the public about all the news going on in the Texas State athletic department.

TEXAS STATE IN BOBCAT STADIUM Texas State enters the Navy game with a 12-7 record in home games since 2011 and an all-time record of 111-78 in home games at Bobcat Stadium after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Aug. 30.

The Bobcats had a 4-2 record in home games during the 2011 and 2013 seasons after winning four home games during just one other time (2009) since 2005 and 14 times that the Bobcats have won four home games since the stadium opened in 1981.

2-0 STARTS Texas State enters the Navy game looking to open two consecutive seasons with 2-0 starts for the first time since 1984 after opening the 2014 campaign with a win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Bobcats won their first two games in 2013 with victories against Southern Miss and Prairie View A&M. The only other 2-0 starts since 1984 came in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2005 and 2013.

SECOND TIME AROUND Texas State’s football team is playing in its second year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. It marks the first season since 2010 that the Bobcats will play back-to-back seasons in the same conference. Texas State played its final season in the Southland Conference in 2010 before playing the 2011 campaign as an independent. The Bobcats were a member of the WAC in 2012 before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.

COACH FRAN IS IN HIS FOURTH SEASON Dennis Franchione is in the fourth year of his second tenure at Texas State in 2014, and is one of four active NCAA Division I FBS coaches with 200 career victories.

Coach Fran enters the Navy game with a career record of 204-121-2. Ironically, the two ties came in his first two games as a head coach. Last season, the Bobcats became bowl eligible with six victories in their second season as a member of the FBS. EIGHT NEW STARTERS Texas State had eight players in its starting offensive and defensive units against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Brandon Sarabia made his first start on the offensive line, while Jafus Gaines made his starting debut as a slot receiver.

The Bobcats had six new starters on defense, including the entire defensive line. Kris Petersen and Michael Odiari were the defensive ends, while Dallas McClarty and Mershad Dillon were the defensive tackles. In addition, Aaron Shaw started at weak safety and Germod Williams was the starting safety.

BOBCAT DEBUTS Texas State had 22 players overall play in its first game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Those players included Brandon Sarabia on the offensive line, wide receivers Demun Mercer, C. J. Best and Jack Rhodes, running backs Stedmon Mayberry, Michael

Jones and Louis Rubin, along with quarterbacks Connor White and Fred Nixon.

The defensive players included defensive backs Demetrius Woodard, Devondrick Dixon and Dominique Williamson, along with defensive linemen Dillon, Jeff Banks, Karee Berry, Herbert Gonzales, Rusmin Nikosevic and Brian Guendling.

WHO’S BACK Texas State has 44 lettermen from the 2013 season on its roster with 22 players returning on offense, 20 returnees on defense and both kickers on special teams. Last season, Texas State became bowl eligible with six wins in its second season as member of the NCAA Division I FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference.

ONE OF TOP THREE CROWDS VERSUS THE LIONS The attendance for Texas State’s game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff was the third largest crowd in Bobcat Stadium history with an attendance of 20,850.

The other three coaches are Frank Beamer (268), Steve Spurrier (220) and Brian Kelly (210). Kansas State’s Bill Snyder is fifth on the list with 180 victories.

Franchione has led his teams to nine conference championships, the best SEC West Division during another year and 14 postseason bowls or playoffs. He has been named National Coach of the Year twice or Regional Coach of the Year six times.

Texas State vs. Navy Game Notes TEXAS STATE IN SEASON OPENERS Following the victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Bobcats have a 59-39-2 record in seasonopening games. The victory was the third consecutive win in season-openers. The other two triumphs were at Houston (30-13 in 2012) and Southern Miss (22-15 in 2013). The three victories gives Texas State nine wins in its last 11 season-opening games. The school’s longest winning streak in season openers is seven games in 1962-68 and 197884.

TEXAS STATE IN HOME OPENERS Texas State won its 18th home opener in the last 19 years and improved its overall record in home openers to 45-21-1 since 1948 after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It was the second straight win after the Bobcats defeated Prairie View A&M last season. Texas State also had won 17 straight home openers dating back to 1996 before dropping the first home game in 2012 against Texas Tech.

EIGHT BOBCATS GARNER ALL-SBC HONORS The Sun Belt Conference announced that eight Texas State football players have been selected to the league’s preseason All-Sun Belt Conference teams by the SBC head coaches and a panel of selected media members.

Senior linebackers Michael Orakpo and David Mayo join senior cornerback Craig Mager and senior place kicker Jason Dann as All-SBC FirstTeam selections. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones, junior running back Robert Lowe, junior offensive tackle Adrian Bellard and junior return specialist Brandon Smith were named to the All-SBC Second-Team.

ORAKPO NAMED TO BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker Michael Orakpo is the only player from the Sun Belt Conference named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award that is given to the nation’s top linebacker. Orakpo also has been named a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Athlon, USA Today and Sporting News preseason magazines after being named Honorable Mention AllSBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team

He picked right where he left off last season when he recorded his first sack of the season and a quarterback hurry against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after ranking seventh among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 4.5 sacks. He also had four tackles, including one solo stop, against the Lions.

MAYO NAMED TO LOMBARDI AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker David Mayo was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Club of Houston’s Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. The Lombardi Award is presented to the college lineman of the year by the Rotary Club of Houston and includes 123 players from 76 different institutions, including seven from the Sun Belt Conference schools.

Mayo also has been named 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Lindy’s and Athlon and a Second-Team selection by Phil Steele after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team by Phil Steele and College Sports Madness in 2013.

He led the Bobcats with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

LOWE NOMINATED FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD LIST Junior running back Robert Lowe was a preseason nomination for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back and opened the season gaining 150 yards and scoring a touchdown on just 14 carries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It is the second-highest yardage total for Lowe, who is the top returning rushing leader from last season after running for 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 carries in 2013.

BRADLEY MILLER NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Bradley Miller has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Miller is one of 42 FBS tight ends and one of three tight ends from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

He enters the Navy game with one catch for eight yards this season after catching 24 passes for 311 yards last year. He also was named a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Third-Team selection by Phil Steele. Miller had a season-best of seven receptions for 52 yards against Western Kentucky, caught a 49-yard pass against Wyoming and recorded three catches for 22 yards versus Southern Miss.

SMITH AND GAINES NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST A pair of Texas State kickoff return specialists Brandon Smith and Jafus Gaines have been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season.

Smith had a 25-yard return against ArkansasPine Bluff after becoming one of 13 players in NCAA history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a single game when he recorded returns of 100 and 92 yards for touchdowns in Texas State’s first Sun Belt Conference game at UL Lafayette in 2013.

He ranked fifth nationally and second among Sun Belt Conference leaders in kickoff returns overall after averaging 29.9 yards on 20 returns last season. His two touchdowns also set school records for most TDs scored on a kickoff return in a game, season and career. He also had three returns overall for a total of 211 yards against the Ragin’ Cajuns to earn SBC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

In addition to the UL Lafayette game, Smith recorded a 42-yard return at Troy, had a seasonhigh six returns for 130 yards, including a 30-yard return against Western Kentucky and returned four kickoffs for 94 yards at Arkansas State.

Gaines opened the season with four catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after seeing limited playing time due to a leg injury last year.

Two years ago, he ranked eighth nationally and led the WAC in kickoff returns after averaging 28.9 yards on 28 returns. He had career-best 65yard returns against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech that season.

The CFPA is in its seventh season of recognition. The CFPA’s player and team performance index ranks success in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.

DANN NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Texas State senior kicker Jason Dann has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Dann is one of 40 FBS kickers and one of three kickers from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

Phil Steele and Athlon named him a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team kicker. He opened this season making a 31-yard field goal and eight of his nine extra-point tries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

He took over Texas State’s field goal kicking duties in 2013 and finished the final eight games making nine of his 10 attempts, including all five tries from inside 40 yards. He had a season-long 43-yard field goal against both UL Monroe and South Alabama, and kicked a 42-yard field goal at Idaho.

Texas State vs. Navy Game Notes TEXAS STATE VS. NAVY This will mark the second time that Texas State and Navy have met on the gridiron. The Midshipmen edged the Bobcats 21-10 in Annapolis, Md. on Nov. 17, 2012. This marks the first time that a service academy has visited Bobcat Stadium.

Texas State vs. Navy Game Notes OFFENSIVE TEAM NOTES RECORD SETTING ATTACK Texas State set a number of records in the season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Below are the marks the Bobcats set: • School-record 697 yards of total offense. Previous high was 680 against Prairie View A&M in 2005.

• In the Sun Belt, the 697 yards ties for the fifth most in conference history along with Troy against North Texas in 2009. The Bobcats finished with 378 yards rushing and 319 yards passing.

• It was the first time in Coach Fran’s current tenure, the Bobcats amassed over 600 yards in total offense.

• The 39 first downs set a program record, surpassing the previous best of 38 against Jacksonville State in 1998.

• The 39 first downs also tied a Sun Belt Confernece record. Idaho also had 39 first downs at Middle Tennessee in 2001.

• The 65 points is the seventh highest point total in Sun Belt Conference history.

• This marks the second time Texas State has scored 65+ points under Franchione (66 vs. New Mexico State in 2012).

• Texas State’s 42 points in the first half were more than any single game total in 2013.

• The 42 points in the first half also were the most points scored in the first half since the Bobcats tallied 49 against New Mexico State in 2012.

• The Bobcats did not have to punt against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The one drive in which they did not score ended in a turnover on UAPB’s two-yard line.

JAFUS MAKING HUGE “GAINES” Junior wide receiver Jafus Gaines had had a breakout game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after struggling through injuries last year, .

Gaines led the team with four catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

He was the first Bobcat receiver to amass over 100 yards in a game since Isaiah Battle in 2012. Gaines also caught a 71-yard pass against the Lions.

BROTHERS COMBINE FOR TOUCHDOWNS Jafus Gaines not only caught two touchdown passes in his first career start against ArkansasPine Bluff, but his yourger brother, Demun Mercer, also recorded a 16-yard touchdown reception for the Bobcats in his first collegiate game against the Lions.

STEPHENVILLE CONNECTION During their high school days, quarterback Tyler Jones and wide receiver Brice Gunter reset the recordbooks for Stephenville High School, as Gunter had 88 receptions for 1,369 yards with 18 touchdowns his senior year.

Jones and Gunter displayed their connection for the first time at Texas State, as Gunter recorded his first three career catches for 36 yards against UAPB. T-FRANKS Senior running back Terrence Franks was widely regarded as one of the breakout stars of fall camp. He kept his hot play going into the opener, finishing with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jones and adding a TD run as well.

The TD marked the second straight game he reached the end zone dating back to the 2013 season finale when he also caught a TD pass.

ALL-PURPOSE PLAYER Junior receiver C.J. Best showed the ability to be dangerous in both the run game and the pass game. He scored the first TD of his Texas State career, with a 17-yard option run in the first quarter.

Best also added 11 receiving yards as he finished the game with 39 total yards.

EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE Texas State’s offensive line also had an impressive performance against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Bobcats entered 2014 with a combined 85 starts among his returning offensive linemen.

The lone senior among the group, Charlie Will Tuttle, enters the Navy game with 30 career starts.

Matt Freeman has started 18 games during his career, while Adrian Bellard has 13 consecutive starts at left tackle. Ryan Melton has seven starts, while Brandon Sarabia made his first career start against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Other experienced reserves include Felix Romero (12 starts in 2013), Collin Fissell (seven starts), Zach Crawford (six starts) and Jack Costello (three starts), Adrian Bellard and Felix Romero started all 12 games last season. Ryan Melton started six games last season, while Jack Costello had three starts.

LINE RECORDS 48 KNOCKDOWNS Texas State’s offensive line also combined for 48 knockdown blocks against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Felix Romero led the Bobcats with seven, while Matt Freeman recorded 5.5 knockdowns, Brandon Sarabia and Ryan Melton had five each and Charlie Will Tuttle recorded 4.5.

In addition, Adrian Bellard, Hayden Lambert and Collin Fissell each registered four, whiel Jackson Hoskins had three, Stephan Jacobs tallied two and Jack Costello and Josh Sell each recorded one.

Texas State vs. Navy Game Notes DEFENSIVE NOTES POSTING A SHUTOUT Texas State is one of 14 NCAA Division I FBS defenses to shut out the opposing team this season.

The Bobcats were one of seven schools to accomplish the feat on the opening weekend of college football when they joined Akron, Baylor, Memphis, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh and Stanford as FBS with shutouts on Aug. 28-30.

Alabama, Florida, Appalachian State, LSU, West Virginia, Notre Dame and Houston held their opponents scoreless on Sept. 6.

It is the first time the Bobcats have shut out an oppoent since Sept. 10, 2005 when the Bobcats defeated Southern Utah, 34-0.

TOUGH YARDS The Texas State defense also allowed Arkansas-Pine Bluff to gain just 212 total yards offense in its 2014 season-opening game. In fact, the Bobcats didn’t allow the Lions to cross the 50-yard line in the second half.

It was just the sixth time during head coach Dennis Franchione’s current tenure that the team has allowed less than 300 yards in a game.

PRESSURE COOKER New defensive coordinator John Thompson is known for his multiple defenses and blitz packages.

In its first game under Thompson, Texas State registered three sacks and three quarterback hurries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Last season, Thompson’s defense at Arkansas State averaged 2.0 sacks per game.

THOMPSON NAMED DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR John Thompson joined Texas State’s coaching staff in April 2014 after serving two seasons in the same position at Arkansas State. There, he helped guide the Red Wolves to a pair of Sun Belt Conference championships. Thompson also served as interim head coach each of the last two years when he led Arkansas State to victories over No. 25 Kent State and Ball State in the 2013 and 2014 GoDaddy Bowls.

MAYO IN DOUBLE DIGITS Senior linebacker David Mayo picked up right where he left off last season as he led the Bobcats with 10 tackles against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Mayo ended the 2013 season with a career-best 16 tackles at Troy after recording 11 stops against Western Kentucky after sitting out two games with an injury.

Mayo was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Club of Houston’s Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. He also was a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Lindy’s and Athlon and a Second-Team selection by Phil Steele.

Last season, he led the SBC and ranked 12th nationally in solo tackles with an average of 6.0 per game, ranked 13th nationally and fourth among SBC leaders in total tackles with an average of 8.9 per game. In addition, he averaged 10.0 tackles in conference only games to rank third among league leaders and ranked second among league leaders in interceptions with four.

ORAKPO REGISTERS ANOTHER SACK Senior linebacker Michael Orakpo also picked up where he left off last season as he recorded a quarterback sack and tackle for a loss of eight yards against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He also ended the game with four tackles and a quarterback hurry against the Lions.

Last season, Orakpo led the Bobcats and ranked seventh among SBC leaders with 4.5 sacks and was among Top 10 SBC leaders with 10 tackle for losses of 38 yards.

Orakpo entered this season as the only player from the Sun Belt Conference named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award that is given to the nation’s top linebacker. Orakpo also was been named a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Athlon, USA Today and Sporting News preseason magazines.

SIX NEW STARTERS ON DEFENSE Texas State opened the 2014 season with six players making their first starts for the Bobcats.

Among the six players were defensive linemen

Michael Odiari, Mershad Dillon, Dallas McClarty and Kris Petersen. In addition, safties Aaron Shaw and Germod Williams also made their first career starts.

DEFENSIVE BALANCE Texas State record 51 tackles as a team with 25 different players logging at least one tackle and another, Will Trevillion, assisting on another stop.

SMITH STEPS IN AT LINEBACKER Sophomore Stephen Smith also made his mark at linebacker as he recorded five tackles to rank second among team leaders. Smith’s five stops was one shy of his career-best of six tackles against Georgia State. He also had a the first sack of his career and equaled his career-best of one tackle for a loss against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

MIMS STARTS AT CORNERBACK Junior cornerback David Mims returned to Texas State’s starting lineup against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and equalled his career-high of three tackles against the Lions. He also broke up one pass against UAPB. Mims also started at cornerback at Southern Miss in 2013 and had three unassisted tackles against the Golden Eagles. He also had three tackles against Prairie View A&M, Texas Tech and UL Lafayette.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS Junior college transfers Mershad Dillon and Aaron Shaw made their first starts for the Bobcats after joining Texas State’s team this fall.

Dillon made his first start at defensive tackle and recorded two unassisted tackles, including one tackle for a three-yard loss. In addition, Dillon forced a fumble and had a quarterback hurry against the Lions. He joined Texas State after playing at Hancock College in Santa Maria, Calif.

Shaw also made his first start at weakside safety, and registered two solo tackles and a quarterback hurry. He joined the Bobcats after playing last season at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.

Texas State vs. Navy Game Notes SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES NO PUNTS IN A GAME Texas State didn’t have a punt against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and that is the first game with no punts for the Bobcats they played at SMU on Sept. 6, 2008. Texas State scored five touchdowns, kicked a field goal and had three fumbles and two intercepted passes against the Mustangs.

JOHNSON AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS Texas State kicker/punter Will Johnson ranked fifth nationally in 2013 after placing 47.2 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line. Johnson placed 17 of his 36 punts inside the 20-yard line last year.

He also was 17th nationally with a punting average of 44.3 yards per punt in 2013.

TOP PUNT RETURN TEAM IN SBC The Bobcats are leading the Sun Belt Conference in punt returns for the second straight season.

Last year, Texas State led the SBC in punt returns with an average of 14.2 yards per return. Andy Erickson led the SBC and ranked 14th nationally in punt returns after returning 20 punts for 284 yards.

JOHNSON ON KICKOFFS Will Johnson also kicks off and averaged 59.6 yards on 11 kickoffs against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He had four of his kickoffs result in touchbacks and had a net average of 42.3 yards per kickoff.

Last season, he had 36 of his 52 kickoffs resulting in a touchback. He also averaged 64.8 yards per kickoff. His kickoffs had an average net of 40.5 per kickoff.

MAGER RETURNS FIRST PUNT SINCE 2012 Senior cornerback Craig Mager is returning punts for Texas State this season after the graduation of Erickson. Mager recorded a 35-yard return against Arkansas-Pine Bluff to help set up Texas State’s first touchdown. It was the second return of his career as he also ended the 2012 season with a 79-yard return against New Mexico State to set a school record for the longest punt return.

SMITH RETURNS KICKOFFS Brandon Smith is returning kickoffs for the second straight year. Smith opened the 2014 season with a 25-yard return against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season marked the first time Smith returned kickoffs in his playing career. He was named an All-Sun Belt Conference First-Team selection

by Phil Steele Magazine and College Sports Madness after leading the league and ranking second nationally by returning two kickoffs for touchdowns against UL Lafayette.

Smith became the 13th player in NCAA history to return two kickoffs in a single game with returns of 100 and 92 yards against the Ragin Cajuns in 2013..

Smith ranked second nationally in kickoff returns and led the nation in kickoff return touchdowns with an average of 29.9 yards per return and two touchdowns.

DANN SETS NEW CAREER HIGH Jason Dann made seven of his eight extrapoint attempts against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. His seven extra points were the most he has made in a single game. His previous career-best was four at Idaho in 2013. Ironically, his only other missed extra point attempt last year was at Idaho.

DANN MAKES FIRST FIELD GOAL ATTEMPT Jason Dann also made his first field goal attempt in 2014 when he kicked a 31-yard field goal against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Last season, Dann made nine of his 10 attempts. He kicked a pair of career-long 43-yard field goals in 2013.

LONGEST FIELD GOAL IN SCHOOL HISTORY Will Johnson also kicks field goals on field goal attempts over 50 yards. He holds Texas State’s record for the longest field goal with a 54-yard kick against New Mexico State in 2012. It was his third field goal beyond 50 yards during his career. He also kicked a 52-yard field goal against Stephen F. Austin after kicking a 53yard field goal against Tarleton State in 2011.

DENNIS FRANCHIONE

Head Coach 29th Season as Head Coach Sixth Season as a coach at Texas State Pittsburg State, 1973 A proven winner who has led Texas State’s transition to the NCAA Division I FBS ranks, Dennis Franchione is in the fourth season of his second term as the Bobcats’ head coach.

Last season, Texas State became bowl eligible in just its second season of playing in the FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference, which finished the season as the toughest non-automatic qualifying conference in the nation. It also equaled the shortest time in which a school became bowl eligible in the FBS since Marshall in 1996.

Franchione enters his 29th season as a head coach and is one of four active head coaches with over 200 wins after reaching that plateau in 2013. He enters the Navy game with a 204-121-2 career record, including a 30-29 mark as head coach at Texas State.

Prior to his return to Texas State, Franchione led his teams to nine conference championships and had the best divisional record during one season. In addition, his teams played in nine bowl games, four NAIA playoff games and one NCAA Division II playoff contest.

His collegiate head-coaching career began at Southwestern College in 1981, when he compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. In 1982, the Builders won nine games, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and beat Oklahoma Panhandle State 15-0 in the Sunflower Bowl.

It was Southwestern College’s first bowl game and the nine victories tied the school’s single-season record that was previously set in 1967. Following the record-setting season, Franchione went to Tennessee Tech, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 1983 and 1984 before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State.

During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and four Central States Intercollegiate Conference championships and one Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a combined record of 37-1. He was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year twice. His teams tied the school record with 11 victories in a season three times before breaking it with a 12-win campaign in 1989 when Pittsburg State joined the NCAA Division II ranks.

In 1990, Franchione took the reins of Texas State’s football program for the first time. He led the Bobcats to a 6-5 record in his first year, and that was Texas State’s first winning record as a member of the Southland Conference, the first winning season as a Division I FCS member and first winning season since 1984.

The following year, Franchione led the Bobcats to their second straight winning season, a feat that was not duplicated until Texas State had back-to-back winning seasons in 2008 and 2009.

After compiling a 13-9 record at Texas State during those two years, Franchione joined the FBS head coaching ranks for the first time when he took over New Mexico’s program.

Before his arrival, New Mexico had won just 26 of its previous 106 games.

During his six seasons with the Lobos, Franchione compiled an overall 33-36 record and had three winning seasons. He led the Lobos to their first winning record in 11 years with a 6-5 record in 1993. Franchione also guided New Mexico to its first back-to-back winning campaigns since 1971 when the Lobos posted a 6-5 record in 1996 and a 9-4 mark in 1997. The 1997 New Mexico team won the Western Athletic Conference’s Mountain Division with a 7-1 league record and played in the Insight.com Bowl in 1997. It was the school’s first bowl game since 1961. While he was at New Mexico, Franchione recruited and coached future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher during his freshman and sophomore seasons

in 1996 and 1997. Urlacher recorded over 102 tackles to rank second on the team in 1997.

Franchione also produced Third-Team All-American receiver Pascal Volz and a pair of WAC Offensive Players of the Year in quarterbacks Stoney Case (1994) and Graham Leigh (1997) while he was at New Mexico.

Following the Insight Bowl, Franchione moved to TCU in 1998 and quickly turned around the fortunes of the school’s football program.

Before his arrival, the Horned Frogs had finished the previous season with a 1-10 record. In his first year at the helm, Franchione led them to a 7-5 mark and a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl. The Horned Frogs scored a schoolrecord six defensive touchdowns, intercepted 12 passes and held opponents to an average of 19.6 points per game – the lowest average in over 30 years. His offense featured running back Basil Mitchell, who gained 1,111 yards and scored six touchdowns. Mitchell rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-19 win over USC. The next season, Franchione also led TCU to the inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl when LaDainian Tomlinson burst onto the national scene by leading the nation in rushing with 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns on 268 carries. The Horned Frogs posted two shutouts and led the Western Athletic Conference in every major defensive category. TCU won the WAC championship and upset No. 20 East Carolina 28-14 in the bowl game as Tomlinson ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. In 2000, Tomlinson was a Doak Walker Award winner and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Football News National Offensive Player of the Year and an unanimous All-American after running for 2,158 yards, the fourth-highest single season total in NCAA history. He also scored 22 touchdowns as TCU finished the season with a 10-1 record, a WAC championship and a second-straight berth to the Mobile Alabama Bowl. Defensively, the Horned Frogs allowed only 245.0 total yards and 9.6 points per game, ranking first in the nation in both categories.

Following the 2000 campaign, Franchione was named the head coach at Alabama after the Crimson Tide finished the previous season with a 3-8 record.

In his first season, he led the Tide to a 7-5 record and a 14-13 victory over Iowa State in the Independence Bowl, giving Alabama its first bowl victory in five years.

In 2002, he led the Crimson Tide to a 10-3 mark and placed first in the SEC West Division with a 6-2 league record. However, previous NCAA sanctions made Alabama ineligible to play in a bowl game and the SEC Championship Game. Following Alabama’s victory over Hawaii at the end of the regular season, Franchione returned to the State of Texas when he was named head coach at Texas A&M. During the next five seasons, his Aggies posted three winning records and played in three bowl games. Texas A&M finished the 2004 season with a 7-5 mark and played in the Cotton Bowl, the Aggies’ first bowl game in three seasons. His best season at the school came in 2006 when the Aggies won nine games and played in the Holiday Bowl. The next year, Texas A&M posted a 7-5 record and qualified to play in the Alamo Bowl. However, Franchione resigned as head coach prior to the bowl game and ended his tenure at the school with a 32-28 record.

His recruiting classes were ranked among the Top 13 nationally from 2003-05.

Franchione also worked in broadcasting for three years prior to his return to coaching at Texas State, including two seasons as an analyst for ESPN Radio in 2008 and 2009.

Born March 28, 1951 in Girard, Kan., he is a graduate of Pittsburgh State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and received an Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award. He and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Ashley and Libby. He also has a son, Brad. Brad and his wife, Rebecca, have two sons Wyatt and Gunnar and a daughter, Isabella. Franchione and Kim also formed the Coach Fran Charities, a nonprofit organization assists children with special needs and other charitable causes.
