SETTING THE SCENE The Texas State football team looks to win its fourth game overall and second Sun Belt Conference game when the Bobcats travel to UL Monroe on Saturday, Oct. 25. The game will be played at Malone Stadium and televised on ESPN3 beginning at 6:00 p.m. (Central).

Texas State enters the game with a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 SBC mark. The Bobcats look to rebound from a 34-10 loss against UL Lafayette on Oct. 14 after beating Idaho 35-30 on Oct. 4 and outlasting Tulsa, 37-34, in triple overtime on Sept. 27. It was their first overtime victory since 2008.

ULM also enters the game with a 3-3 overall record and is 2-1 against SBC opponents this season.

The Warhawks are looking to bounce back from a 48-14 loss at Kentucky on Oct. 11 and a 28-14 setback at Arkansas State. The Warhawks are 3-0 in home games this season after opening the season with a 17-10 victory against Wake Forest and winning their first two SBC games, 38-31 against Idaho and 22-20 over Troy.

MEDIA POLICIES FOR BOBCAT FOOTBALL WEEKLY PRESS LUNCHEON Head coach Dennis Franchione and selected Bobcat players meet with the media at Texas State’s weekly media luncheon each Tuesday preceding a game in the J. Garland Warren Room on the second level of Bobcat Stadium’s End Zone Complex. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and followed by interviews.

ADDITIONAL INTERVIEWS In addition to Tuesday’s media luncheon, Texas State student-athletes and coach Franchione will be available for in-person or phone interviews after practice on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Requests should be directed to Rick Poulter.

All interview requests must be coordinated through the Texas State Sports Information Office with, hopefully, a 24-hour advance notice. Student-athlete’s phone numbers will not be given out. Coaches and student-athletes are not available for interviews the day before a game or on game day.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS The Texas State locker room is located inside the End Zone Complex at Bobcat Stadium. The visiting locker room is located in the North Side Complex.

Texas State head coach and requested players are available in the team meeting room approximately 10 minutes after each game. Texas State’s locker room is closed following each game and practice.

Texas State University is committed to a policy of equal access for both male and female reporters and photographers.

Visiting SID’s will establish media interview and locker room admittance policies for their respective teams.

PRACTICE COVERAGE Practices are open to members of the media, but Texas State does require media members to contact Rick Poulter if they plan to attend. A member of the SID staff is on hand at every practice to assist the media. There is access for photographers and videographers to shoot photographs and video during the first 50 minutes of practice.

All interview requests will be coordinated after practice is complete.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Working media and photographer credentials for Texas State’s home games will be handled by assistant athletics director and sports information director Rick Poulter.

Requests should be made in writing by sports editors or sports directors of accredited media outlets on company letterhead. Requests should be made as early as possible and should be limited to working media only. Requests made within three days of the game may not be considered.

Media parking at Bobcat Stadium is available on a limited basis in Lots 3 and 4 of the stadium and at Mill Street. Requests for parking passes should be made well in advance to the Sports Information Office.

TEXAS STATE PRESS BOX The Texas State Press Box, located on the fourth level of the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium, opens three hours prior to each game. The working press box, coaches’ booths and radio/TV booths are located on the same level.

Media credentials are required for admittance to the press box and for meals.

Game notes and programs are provided prior to the game. Game statistics and quotes are provided during and after the game. The working press area has complimentary wireless internet access available. On game day, Texas State telecommunications representatives are on hand to assist media members.

SIDELINES Texas State follows guidelines set forth by the NCAA Public Relations Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the American Football Coaches Association and the National Press Photographers Association.

Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must have credentials visible at all times. In an effort to ensure the best possible working conditions for media photographers, uniformed security personnel will be patrolling the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved in coverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be in effect in the press box.

Texas State vs. ULM Game Notes TEXAS STATE ON THE AIR Texas State’s football games are broadcast live on KOKE FM (105.3 FM) in Austin, KTSW (89.9 FM) in San Marcos and KLUP (930 AM) in San Antonio.

Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane call the action for each Bobcat Football game. Ben Campos (home games) and John McElfresh (away games) serve as sideline reporters. Each broadcast starts with a one-hour pregame show and is followed by a 15-minute postgame show.

COACH FRAN RADIO SHOW The Coach Fran Radio Show airs on 104.9 the Horn in Austin and San Marcos each Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The show also airs live on KLUP (930 AM) in San Antonio.

The show takes place at Bobcat Nation Sports Bar and Grill in San Marcos. Coach Franchione joins host Brant Freeman, along with selected assistant coaches and players as they preview each upcoming game throughout the 2014 season.

“ALL IN” BOBCAT FOOTBALL TV SHOW Texas State Athletics has teamed with Time Warner Cable Sports, Fox Sports Southwest and San Antonio’s CW 35 to highlight Texas State‘s football team each week on “All In at Texas State”.

The 30-minute show features head coach Dennis Franchione, hosts Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane, along with the Bobcat coaching staff and players. The show airs Thursday’s on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel at 6:00 p.m. It also will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest each Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., and each Saturday morning on CW 35 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

104.9 THE HORN RADIO SNAPSHOT On the drive home from work, fans can tune in every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. to 104.9 FM in Austin/San Marcos to listen to Erin Hogan interview Coach Franchione, beginning August 27.

BOBCAT MINUTE Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, during “Afternoons with Bucky and Erin” on 104.9 the Horn, from 5:00-6:36 a 60-second spot will air, informing the public about all the news going on in the Texas State athletic department.

TEXAS STATE ON THE ROAD Texas State enters the ULM game with a 1-1 record in road games this season and looking to win its second straight road game following its triple overtime victory at Tulsa on Sept. 27. The Bobcats dropped a 42-35 decision at Illinois on Sept. 20.

The Bobcats also are looking to win their first Sun Belt Conference road game since joining the league in 2013.

Texas State is looking to win three road games in a season for the first time since 2009, when the team was 3-2.

COACH FRAN AMONG TOP FOUR Head coach Dennis Franchione enters the UL Lafayette game with 206 career victories and is one of four active FBS coaches with 200 wins. The other three coaches are Frank Beamer (270), Steve Spurrier (223) and Brian Kelly (213). Kansas State’s Bill Snyder is fifth on the list with 183 victories.

Franchione has led his teams to nine conference championships, the best SEC West Division record another year and 14 postseason bowls or playoffs. He has been named National Coach of the Year twice and Regional Coach of the Year six times.

TEXAS STATE IN BOBCAT STADIUM The Bobcats fell to 2-2 in home games following its loss against UL Lafayette. The Bobcats opened the season with a 65-0 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and also won a 35-30 victory against Idaho. Texas State’s other loss was a 35-21 setback against Navy.

Texas State has a combined record of 13-9 in home games since 2011 and an all-time record of 112-80 in home games at Bobcat Stadium through its first four home games.

The Bobcats had a 4-2 record in home games during the 2011 and 2013 seasons after winning four home games just one other time (2009) since 2005 and 14 times since the stadium opened in 1981.

3-3 STARTS Texas State enters the UL Monroe game with a 3-3 record. It marks the third straight year and sixth time in the last seven years that the Bobcats have begun a season with 3-3 records.

The Bobcats enter the game having won two of its last three games after dropping a 34-10 decision against UL Lafayette and defeating Idaho, 35-30, and Tulsa, 37-34 in triple-overtime.

Texas State also opened the season defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The two other losses came against Navy and at Illinois.

The Bobcats also opened with 3-3 records in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

THREE OF TOP FIVE HOME CROWDS Texas State played in front of three of the top five home crowds in school history during the first three home games this season. Texas State had an attendance of 21,345 against Idaho after playing against Navy in front of the second-largest crowd in Bobcat Stadium history with an attendance of 32,007. The attendance for Texas State’s first game this season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff was 20,850.

It was the first overtime win for the Bobcats since they clinched a Southland Conference championship with a 45-42 win against Sam Houston State on Nov. 22, 2008. The other two victories were against Sam Houston State (26-23) in 2005 and Southeastern Louisiana (31-28) in two overtime periods in 2004 The win at Tulsa was the first overtime game in which Texas State has played under Dennis Franchione and the first overtime game since the Bobcats played four overtime periods against Nicholls State on Oct. 16, 2010.

Texas State vs. ULM Game Notes SEVEN BOBCATS EARN MIDSEASON All-SUN BELT CONFERENCE HONORS Phil Steele Publications named seven Texas State players to its Midseason All-Sun Belt Conference team, including four First-Team selections.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones and senior offensive linemen Charlie Will Tuttle were named on the First-Team offense. Senior linebacker David Mayo was selected on the First-Team defense, while Craig Mager was named to the First-Team special teams as a punt returner.

Mager also joined Germod Williams on the Second Team defense as defensive backs. Senior tight end Bradley Miller was a Second-Team selection on offense.

EIGHT BOBCATS GARNER All-SBC HONORS The Sun Belt Conference announced that eight Texas State football players have been selected to the league’s preseason All-Sun Belt Conference teams by the SBC head coaches and a panel of selected media members.

Senior linebackers Michael Orakpo and David Mayo joined senior cornerback Craig Mager and senior place kicker Jason Dann as All-SBC FirstTeam selections. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones, junior running back Robert Lowe, junior offensive tackle Adrian Bellard and junior return specialist Brandon Smith were named to the All-SBC Second-Team.

ORAKPO NAMED TO BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST After beginning the season on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, senior linebacker Michael Orakpo was lost for the season when he suffered a knee injury against Navy. Orakpo was the only player from the Sun Belt Conference named to the preseason watch list. The Butkus Award is given to the nation’s top linebacker. Orakpo also was named a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Athlon, USA Today and Sporting News preseason magazines after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC SecondTeam by Phil Steele in 2013.

He picked right where he left off last season when he recorded his first sack of the season and a quarterback hurry against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after ranking seventh among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 4.5 sacks. He also had four tackles, including one solo stop, against the Lions. Orakpo had one tackle against Navy in the first quarter before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

MAYO ON LOMBARDI AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker David Mayo is proving why he was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Club of Houston’s Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. Mayo leads the Sun Belt Conference with 13.8 tackles per game after recording 11 tackles against UL Lafayette. Mayo has led the Bobcats in tackles and recorded 10 or more stops during each of the first six games.

In addition to being named to the Lombardi Award preseason watch list, Mayo also was named 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection

by Lindy’s and Athlon and a Second-Team selection by Phil Steele after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team by Phil Steele and College Sports Madness in 2013.

LOWE NOMINATED FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD LIST Junior running back Robert Lowe was a preseason nomination for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back and ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in rushing with 87.6 yards per game.

Lowe has rushed for over 100 yards twice this season and gained 90 yards in another after gaining 117 yards on 26 carries at Illinois, running for 92 yards and a TD on 16 carries against Navy and rushing for 150 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

His 150 yards against UAPB is his secondhighest yardage total in a single game. Last year, he was the top returning rushing leader from last season after running for 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 carries in 2013.

BRADLEY MILLER NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Bradley Miller has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Miller is one of 42 FBS tight ends and one of three tight ends from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

He caught a career-best eight passes for a career-best 112 yards to lead the Bobcats at Tulsa.

One of his receptions helped preserve a scoring drive in the first overtime period and another set up the winning score.

Miller caught four passes for 43 yards at Illinois after leading the Bobcats with seven catches for 62 yards against Navy.

He enters the UL Monroe catch leading the Bobcats with 25 receptions for 254 yards and a touchdown.

Last season, Miller caught 24 passes for 311 yards last year. He also was named a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Third-Team selection by Phil Steele.

Miller had a season-best of seven receptions for 52 yards against Western Kentucky in 2013.

SMITH AND GAINES NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST A pair of Texas State kickoff return specialists, Brandon Smith and Jafus Gaines, have been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season.

Smith had a two returns for 36 yards against UL Lafayette, a 29-yard return against Idaho and a 25-yard return at Tulsa after returning three kickoffs for 79 yards at Illinois. He also recorded three re-

turns for 45 yards against Navy and another one for 25 yards against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season, Smith became one of 13 players in NCAA history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a single game when he recorded returns of 100 and 92 yards for touchdowns in Texas State’s first Sun Belt Conference game at UL Lafayette.

He ranked fifth nationally in kickoff returns overall after averaging 29.9 yards on 20 returns last season. His two touchdowns also set school records for most TDs scored on a kickoff return in a game, season and career.

Two years ago, Gaines ranked eighth nationally and led the WAC in kickoff returns after averaging 28.9 yards on 28 returns. He had career-best 65-yard returns against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech that season.

The CFPA is in its seventh season of recognition. The CFPA’s player and team performance index ranks success in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.

DANN NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Texas State senior kicker Jason Dann has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Dann is one of 40 FBS kickers and one of three kickers from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

Phil Steele and Athlon named him a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team kicker. He opened this season making a 31-yard field goal and eight of his nine extra-point tries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and three extra points against Navy.

He took over Texas State’s field goal kicking duties in 2013 and finished the final eight games making nine of his 10 attempts, including all five tries from inside 40 yards. He had a season-long 43-yard field goal against both UL Monroe and South Alabama, and kicked a 42-yard field goal at Idaho.

Texas State vs. ULM Game Notes TEXAS STATE VS. UL MONROE Texas State and UL Monroe will meet for the 11th time this season and the Bobcats are looking for their third win against the Warhawks. Texas State enters this season’s game with a 1-4 mark in Monroe with the victory coming in the last game played on ULM’s home field on Sept. 30, 2000 when the Bobcats won a 27-7 decision.

Texas State vs. ULM Game Notes OFFENSIVE TEAM NOTES AIRING IT OUT Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones completed 14 of his 23 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown against UL Lafayette after throwing for over 200 yards in each of Texas State’s first four games.

Jones recorded career bests 29 of 43 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns at Illinois. His 336 passing yards against the Illini were the most by a Texas State QB since Bradley George threw for 337 yards against Southeastern Louisiana on Oct. 10, 2009. He opened the season completing 21 of 25 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns.

He threw a season-best 71-yard pass to Jafus Gaines against the Lions.

Jones leads the Sun Belt Conference in passing efficiency rating of 148.4 and enters the UL Monroe game having completed 120 of 178 passes for 1325 yards, 13 touchdowns.

He has already surpassed his totals from last year in passing yards and touchdowns. He threw for 1,130 yards and eight TDs in 2013.

His 13 touchdown passes tie him for 10th place among Texas State’s all-time single season leaders. Jones needs to throw for 455 more yards to move among the school’s Top 10 Single Season leaders.

TEXAS STATE RUSHING ATTACK Texas State enters the UL Monroe game ranked 21st nationally and second among Sun Belt Conference teams in rushing offense with 232.2 yards per game. The Bobcats have two of the top six individual leaders in the Sun Belt.

LOWE AMONG RUSHING LEADERS Robert Lowe is fourth among SBC rushing leaders with 87.6 yards per game. He has rushed for 438 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries this season. His 5.8 yards per carry ranks 29th nationally and is fifth best average in the league.

Lowe has run for over 100 yards in two games this season and has gained over 90 yards in another contest this year. He compiled 117 yards on 26 carries at Illinois after running for 92 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries against Navy and opening this season rushing for 150 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

FRANKS AMONG RUSHING LEADERS Terrence Franks ranks sixth among league leaders with 73.0 yards per game this season.

Franks also ranks third among league leaders with 7.4 yards per carry average.

His 8.0 points per game also leads the Sun Belt after he ran for six touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes this season. His six rushing touchdowns is fourth among league leaders and ranks 42nd nationally.

He also set a school record and had the second-longest run in Sun Belt Conference history with a 95-yard carry for a touchdown against Idaho.

FRANKS NAMED SUN BELT CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior running back Terrence Franks was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and College Football Performance

Awards’ National Running Back of the Week after running for a career-best 284 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries against Idaho. It was the fourth-highest yardage total in school history and the sixth-highest total by a Sun Belt Conference player. Franks had runs of 95, 70 and 70 yards for touchdowns in the game.

His three touchdowns equaled a career-high he set in 2011 and are the most touchdowns scored in a game by a Sun Belt Conference player this season.

TIGHT END COMBINATION Texas State’s tight ends Bradley Miller, Ryan Carden, David Lewis and Lawrence White have a combined 38 catches for 413 yards and a touchdown this season. Miller leads the Bobcats with 25 catches for 254 yards and a TD after catching two passes for 22 yards and three passes for seven yards and a touchdown against Idaho. He had a career-best eight catches for 112 yards at Tulsa after he and Carden combined for eight catches for 111 yards at Illinois.

Miller caught four passes for 43 yards against the Fighting Illini after recording seven catches for 62 yards against Navy.

Carden has seven catches for 91 yards this season. He caught four passes for 56 yards at Illinois and had three catches for 35 yards versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

David Lewis has four receptions for 37 yards and Lawrence White caught the first two passes of his career for 31 yards against UL Lafayette.

IJAH AMONG TEAM LEADERS Senior wide receiver Ben Ijah leads Texas State’s wide receivers with 17 catches this season.

Ijah has 178 receiving yards and three touchdowns after catching three passes for 34 yards against UL Lafayette. Ijah also caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown at Tulsa and equaled his career best of five receptions in a game when he caught five passes for 65 yards and a career-best two touchdowns at Illinois. Prior to this season, Ijah had just one career TD reception against Wyoming in 2013.

JAFUS MAKING HUGE “GAINES” Junior wide receiver Jafus Gaines leads Texas State with four touchdown catches and receiving yards after catching 14 passes for 229 yards.

Gaines had season bests of four catches against UAPB and Navy this season. He logged 119 yards and two touchdowns against ArkansasPine Bluff, and caught touchdown passes at Tulsa and Illinois.

He logged three catches for 27 yards and a TD at Illinois. His 71-yard catch is a the longest by a Bobcat this season and he recorded a team-best 119 receiving yards against UAPB. EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE Texas State’s offensive line also has a combined 115 starts entering the UL Monroe game.

The lone senior among the group, Charlie Will Tuttle, has 35 career starts. Matt Freeman has started 22 games at center, while Adrian Bellard

has 18 consecutive starts at offensive tackle. Ryan Melton has 12 starts, while Felix Romero made his third start of the season and 15th of his career against UL Lafayette. Brandon Sarabia started the first three games at guard for the Bobcats this season.

Other experienced reserves include Collin Fissell (eight starts), Zach Crawford (six starts) and Jack Costello (three starts), ANCHORING THE OFFENSIVE LINE Senior guard Charlie Will Tuttle anchored the offensive line this season and leads the Bobcats with 31 knockdowns through the first six games. .

Tuttle led the Bobcats with three knockdown blocks at Illinois and had a team-high 7.5 knockdowns against Navy.

As a team, the Bobcats had 39 knockdowns against Tulsa, 24.5 knockdown blocks and 211 yards rushing against Navy and 24 against Idaho.

The Bobcats have averaged 232 yards rushing, 227.7 yards passing and allowed just 13 sacks this season.

Ryan Melton has logged 20 pancake blocks, and Matt Freeman has 26.5 knockdowns. In addition, Adrian Bellard and Felix Romero have 18 each, Brandon Sarabia has nine, and Collin Fissell has eight.

Texas State vs. ULM Game Notes DEFENSIVE NOTES THOMPSON NAMED DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR John Thompson joined Texas State’s coaching staff in April 2014 after serving two seasons in the same position at Arkansas State. There, he helped guide the Red Wolves to a pair of Sun Belt Conference championships. Thompson also served as interim head coach each of the last two years when he led Arkansas State to victories over No. 25 Kent State and Ball State in the 2013 and 2014 GoDaddy Bowls.

PRESSURE COOKER John Thompson is known for his multiple defenses and blitz packages. In its first season under Thompson, Texas State is tied with Arkansas State for the lead in the Sun Belt Conference with 22 sacks after logging three sacks against UL Lafayette. It marks the fourth time that Texas State has recorded three or more sacks in a game this season. The Bobcats also had a season-best nine sacks against Idaho, four sacks at Tulsa and three sacks against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season, Thompson’s defense at Arkansas State averaged 2.0 sacks per game. This season, Texas State is averaging 3.67 sacks per game and that leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks seventh nationally.

POSTING A SHUTOUT Texas State fielded a shutout for the first time since 2005 on Aug. 30 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

It is the first time the Bobcats have shut out an opponent since Sept. 10, 2005 when the Bobcats defeated Southern Utah, 34-0.

MAGER NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior cornerback Craig Mager was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded career-bests of 12 tackles, three tackle for losses of 20 yards and two sacks against Idaho. Mager also had a game-high two pass breakups against the Vandals.

MAYO NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK David Mayo also was named a Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-best 20 tackles in Texas State’s tripleovertime victory at Tulsa.

Mayo enters the UL Monroe game leading the Sun Belt Conference in tackles after averaging 13.8 tackles per game. He has recorded 10 or more

tackles in each of the first six games this season and the last eight games dating back to 2013. He registered 11 tackles against UL Lafayette, 16 tackles against Idaho, 20 tackles at Tulsa, 11 tackles at Illinois, 15 stops against Navy and 10 stops versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Mayo ended the 2013 season with 16 tackles at Troy and 11 stops versus Western Kentucky.

ODIARI ON THE FRONT LINE Senior defensive end Michael Odiari enters the UL Monroe ranked third among team leaders with 36 tackles after logging 10 stops in a game for the second time this season. Odiari had 10 tackles against against UL Lafayette and a career-best 13 tackles at Tulsa.

Odiari leads the Sun Belt Conference in sacks and tackle for losses with 6.5 sacks and 8.5 tackle for losses this season.

He was named the College Football Performance Awards’ Honorable Mention Defensive Lineman of the Week after recording a career-best 4.5 sacks and 4.5 tackle for losses of 22 yards against Idaho.

WILLIAMS IN THE INTERCEPTION COLUMN Germod Williams enters the UL Monroe game tied for the lead in the Sun Belt and ranked 14th nationally with three interceptions this season. Williams became the first Bobcat to record multiple interceptions in a game when he intercepted two passes against Idaho.

He also had an interception against Navy.

Williams also enters the UL Monroe game with 24 tackles this season after logging a career-best nine stops against UL Lafayette.

SMITH STEPS IN AT LINEBACKER Stephen Smith enters the UL Monroe tied for fourth place among team leaders with 35 tackles. He logged six tackles against UL Lafayette and that is the fourth time in the last five games in which he has logged six or more tackles. He also tallied a careerbest of nine stops against Idaho and Tulsa after recording six tackles against Navy. He began the season with five tackles against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

TARGUN AMONG TEAM TACKLING LEADERS Senior safety Colby Targun enters the UL Monroe game tied with Smith for fourth place among team

leaders with 35 tackles this season. He tallied four stops against UL Lafayette after posting a career-high of 13 tackles against Idaho. Targun also had seven tackles at Tulsa and five stops versus both Illinois and Navy earlier this year.

Targun also recorded his first interception of the season and returned it 48 yards to set up Texas State’s final touchdown at Illinois. It was the longest return of his career and his third career interception.

MIMS RECORDS FIRST INTERCEPTION Junior cornerback David Mims intercepted a pass against UL Lafayette for his first interception of the season and second interception of his career.

Mims also recorded two tackles in each of the last three games against UL Lafayette, Idaho and Tulsa. Those six tackles came after he registered a career-best of four tackles at Illinois and three tackles against both Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Navy.

DILLON IN THE MIDDLE Junior college transfer Mershad Dillon tied his career-best of three tackles at Tulsa and tallied one at UL Lafayette, Idaho and Illinois. Dillon also had three tackles against Navy after recording two unassisted stops against Arkansas Pine Bluff in his debut with the Bobcats.

SHAW FILLS VOID Aaron Shaw has registered 15 of his 17 total tackles during the last four games after recording two tackles against UL Lafayette. Shaw had four tackles against Idaho and Tulsa after he recorded a careerbest of five tackles at Illinois. He also logged two solo tackles and a quarterback hurry in his collegiate debut against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

MCCLARTY STEPPING UP Sophomore nose tackle Dallas McClarty also recorded 14 of his 19 tackles this season during the last three games. McClarty tallied four tackles against UL Lafayette after recording five tackles against both Idaho and Tulsa.

He also ranks second among team leaders after logging his third sack against UL Lafayette. McClarty had a sack for a loss of six yards against the Ragin’ Cajuns after recording one for a loss of four yards against Idaho and another sack for a loss of two yards at Tulsa.

Texas State at ULM Game Notes SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES NO PUNTS IN A GAME Texas State didn’t punt the football against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and that is the first game with no punts for the Bobcats since they played at SMU on Sept. 6, 2008.

PUNT RETURN LEADER The Bobcats lead the Sun Belt Conference in punt returns with a 15.1 average on seven punt returns this season after Craig Mager returned a punt for seven yards against UL Lafayette and two punts for 50 yards against Idaho.

Overall, Mager has five punt returns for 100 yards this season. He had a season-long 43-yard return against Idaho and had a 35-yard return against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He also had an eightyard return against Navy.

In addition, Brandon McDowell had two returns for six yards at Tulsa.

Last year, Texas State led the SBC in punt returns with an average of 14.2 yards per return.

SMITH RETURNS KICKOFFS Brandon Smith is returning kickoffs for the second straight year and leads the Bobcats with a 21.6 average on 11 returns after returning two kickoffs for 36 yards against UL Lafayette.

Smith also had a 28-yard return against Idaho, a 25-yard return at Tulsa and three returns for 79 yards at Illinois. He had a season-best 34-yard return against the Fighting Illini.

Smith opened the 2014 season with a 25-yard return against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season marked the first time Smith returned kickoffs in his playing career. He became the 13th player in NCAA history to return two kickoffs in a single game with returns of 100 and 92 yards against the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2013.

JOHNSON TAKES OVER KICKING DUTIES Senior Will Johnson took over Texas State’s field goal and extra-point kicking duties during the last three games after beginning the season kicking off and serving as the team’s punter.

Johnson kicked his second field goal with a 20yard kick season against UL Lafayette. He also booted his 11th consecutive extra point against the Ragin’ Cajuns.

He also was successful on five extra-point attempts against Idaho after scoring seven points at Tulsa. Johnson kicked a 49-yard field goal and was successful on four extra-point attempts against the Golden Hurricane. He also kicked one extra point against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

His 49-yard field goal at Tulsa is Texas State’s longest field goal since Johnson kicked a career-best 54-yard field goal against New Mexico State in 2012.

He has kicked three field goals beyond 50 yards during his career. He also kicked field goals from 53 yards against Tarleton State and 52 yards versus Stephen F. Austin in 2011.

JOHNSON AMONG CONFERENCE LEADERS Will Johnson ranks third among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 44.0 yards on 34 punts this season Johnson enters the UL Monroe game having placed 11 of his punts inside the 20-yard line with three touchbacks. He also has eight punts over 50 yards after logging three 50-yard punts against UL Lafayette.

He averaged 46.2 yards on eight punts against UL Lafayette after averaging 39.4 yards on five punts against Idaho, 41.6 yards on eight punts at Tulsa, 47.5 yards on eight punts at Illinois and 45.9 yards on five punts against Navy. Johnson placed three of his punts inside the 20 against the Ragin’ Cajuns and had four of his punts land inside the 20 at Tulsa. He had two punts downed on the one-yard line and another on the 10yard line against the Golden Hurricane.

Johnson had a career-long 70-yard punt and four punts over 50 yards at Illinois. He also logged a 53-yard punt that was downed at Navy’s one-yard line by the Bobcats. He had 58, 55 and 53-yard punts against UL Lafayette.

JOHNSON ON KICKOFFS Johnson is averaging 62.4 yards on 32 kickoffs this season with 17 kickoffs resulting in touchbacks, including 14 of his last 18.

He averaged 63.3 yards on three kickoffs against UL Lafayette and 65.0 yards on five kickoffs against Idaho with four being touchbacks. He also averaged 64.5 yards on his four kickoffs at Tulsa with three being downed for touchbacks, and netting an average of 65.0 yards and five touchbacks on five kickoffs at Illinois.

Johnson averaged 59.0 yards on three kickoffs against Navy after beginning the season averaging 59.6 yards on 11 kickoffs versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season, he had 36 of his 52 kickoffs resulting in a touchback. He also averaged 64.8 yards per kickoff.

DANN SETS NEW CAREER HIGH Texas State’s other placekicker Jason Dann had converted 15 of his 16 extra-point attempts this season.

Dann converted on a career-best seven extra-point attempts against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

• Texas State entered the 2014 season having won two national championships and 13 conference championships. The Bobcats were the 1981 and 1982 NCAA Division II national champions under the late Jim Wacker. DENNIS FRANCHIONE

Head Coach 29th Season as Head Coach Sixth Season as a coach at Texas State Pittsburg State, 1973 A proven winner who has led Texas State’s transition to the NCAA Division I FBS ranks, Dennis Franchione is in the fourth season of his second term and sixth season overall as the Bobcats’ head coach.

Last season, Texas State became bowl eligible in just its second season of playing in the FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference, which finished the season as the toughest non-automatic qualifying conference in the nation. It also equaled the shortest time in which a school became bowl eligible in the FBS since Marshall in 1996.

Franchione is in his 29th season as a head coach and is one of four active head coaches with over 200 wins after reaching that plateau in 2013. He enters the UL Monroe game with a 206-124-2 career record, including a 32-32 mark as head coach at Texas State.

Prior to his return to Texas State, Franchione led his teams to nine conference championships and had the best divisional record during one season. In addition, his teams played in nine bowl games, four NAIA playoff games and one NCAA Division II playoff contest.

His collegiate head-coaching career began at Southwestern College in 1981, when he compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. In 1982, the Builders won nine games, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and beat Oklahoma Panhandle State 15-0 in the Sunflower Bowl.

It was Southwestern College’s first bowl game and the nine victories tied the school’s single-season record that was previously set in 1967. Following the record-setting season, Franchione went to Tennessee Tech, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 1983 and 1984 before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State.

During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and four Central States Intercollegiate Conference championships and one Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a combined record of 37-1. He was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year twice. His teams tied the school record with 11 victories in a season three times before breaking it with a 12-win campaign in 1989 when Pittsburg State joined the NCAA Division II ranks.

In 1990, Franchione took the reins of Texas State’s football program for the first time. He led the Bobcats to a 6-5 record in his first year, and that was Texas State’s first winning record as a member of the Southland Conference, the first winning season as a Division I FCS member and first winning season since 1984.

The following year, Franchione led the Bobcats to their second straight winning season, a feat that was not duplicated until Texas State had back-to-back winning seasons in 2008 and 2009.

After compiling a 13-9 record at Texas State during those two years, Franchione joined the FBS head coaching ranks for the first time when he took over New Mexico’s program.

Before his arrival, New Mexico had won just 26 of its previous 106 games.

During his six seasons with the Lobos, Franchione compiled an overall 33-36 record and had three winning seasons. He led the Lobos to their first winning record in 11 years with a 6-5 record in 1993. Franchione also guided New Mexico to its first back-to-back winning campaigns since 1971 when the Lobos posted a 6-5 record in 1996 and a 9-4 mark in 1997. The 1997 New Mexico team won the Western Athletic Conference’s Mountain Division with a 7-1 league record and played in the Insight.com Bowl in 1997. It was the school’s first bowl game since 1961. While he was at New Mexico, Franchione recruited and coached future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher during his freshman and sophomore seasons

in 1996 and 1997. Urlacher recorded over 102 tackles to rank second on the team in 1997.

Franchione also produced Third-Team All-American receiver Pascal Volz and a pair of WAC Offensive Players of the Year in quarterbacks Stoney Case (1994) and Graham Leigh (1997) while he was at New Mexico.

Following the Insight Bowl, Franchione moved to TCU in 1998 and quickly turned around the fortunes of the school’s football program.

Before his arrival, the Horned Frogs had finished the previous season with a 1-10 record. In his first year at the helm, Franchione led them to a 7-5 mark and a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl. The Horned Frogs scored a schoolrecord six defensive touchdowns, intercepted 12 passes and held opponents to an average of 19.6 points per game – the lowest average in over 30 years. His offense featured running back Basil Mitchell, who gained 1,111 yards and scored six touchdowns. Mitchell rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-19 win over USC. The next season, Franchione also led TCU to the inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl when LaDainian Tomlinson burst onto the national scene by leading the nation in rushing with 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns on 268 carries. The Horned Frogs posted two shutouts and led the Western Athletic Conference in every major defensive category. TCU won the WAC championship and upset No. 20 East Carolina 28-14 in the bowl game as Tomlinson ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. In 2000, Tomlinson was a Doak Walker Award winner and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Football News National Offensive Player of the Year and an unanimous All-American after running for 2,158 yards, the fourth-highest single season total in NCAA history. He also scored 22 touchdowns as TCU finished the season with a 10-1 record, a WAC championship and a second-straight berth to the Mobile Alabama Bowl. Defensively, the Horned Frogs allowed only 245.0 total yards and 9.6 points per game, ranking first in the nation in both categories.

Following the 2000 campaign, Franchione was named the head coach at Alabama after the Crimson Tide finished the previous season with a 3-8 record.

In his first season, he led the Tide to a 7-5 record and a 14-13 victory over Iowa State in the Independence Bowl, giving Alabama its first bowl victory in five years.

In 2002, he led the Crimson Tide to a 10-3 mark and placed first in the SEC West Division with a 6-2 league record. However, previous NCAA sanctions made Alabama ineligible to play in a bowl game and the SEC Championship Game. Following Alabama’s victory over Hawaii at the end of the regular season, Franchione returned to the State of Texas when he was named head coach at Texas A&M. During the next five seasons, his Aggies posted three winning records and played in three bowl games. Texas A&M finished the 2004 season with a 7-5 mark and played in the Cotton Bowl, the Aggies’ first bowl game in three seasons. His best season at the school came in 2006 when the Aggies won nine games and played in the Holiday Bowl. The next year, Texas A&M posted a 7-5 record and qualified to play in the Alamo Bowl. However, Franchione resigned as head coach prior to the bowl game and ended his tenure at the school with a 32-28 record.

His recruiting classes were ranked among the Top 13 nationally from 2003-05.

Franchione also worked in broadcasting for three years prior to his return to coaching at Texas State, including two seasons as an analyst for ESPN Radio in 2008 and 2009.

Born March 28, 1951 in Girard, Kan., he is a graduate of Pittsburgh State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and received an Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award. He and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Ashley and Libby. He also has a son, Brad. Brad and his wife, Rebecca, have two sons Wyatt and Gunnar and a daughter, Isabella. Franchione and Kim also formed the Coach Fran Charities, a nonprofit organization assists children with special needs and other charitable causes.
