SCOUTING THE COMPETITION APPALACHIAN STATE The Mountaineers come into the weekend with a 13-29 overall record and 1-19 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. Appalachian State is currently in ninth place in the nine team league. Sarah Warnock leads the team offensively as she is averaging .324 from the plate in 111 at bats. She has a team-high eight doubles and a slugging percentage of .532. Caroline Chambers leads the Mountaineers with eight home runs and is one of four players with over 100 at bats to carry a .300 batting average. As a team, the Mountaineers are averaging .275 from the plate and have hit 37 home runs. Appalachian State ranks eighth in the conference in fielding percentage with a mark of .947. In the circle, the Mountaineers are lead by Vanessa Ciocatto with a 5.93 ERA in a team-high 89.2 innings pitched. She has struck out a team-high 54 batters and has two complete games this season. perfect game of her career. Rupp struck out nine batters while allowing five fly outs and one ground out in her ninth shutout of the season. This was the first perfect game thrown by a Bobcat since Katie Garnett threw one on Feb. 16, 2008 against UMKC. She earned her first Pitcher of the Week honor this past week through the Sun Belt Conference due to her perfect game. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR FINALIST Freshman shortstop Ariel Ortiz was named a Top 25 Finalist for the NFCA National Freshman of the Year award Thursday afternoon. Ortiz is second on the Bobcat squad in batting average at .370 and first in doubles with 16. She is one of three Bobcats to have recorded 50 hits this season. ATTENDANCE BARRIERS Against the Longhorns last Friday, Texas State welcomed the second-largest crowd of 986 to the Bobcat Softball Stadium. The largest crowd was in the stadium opener on February 18, 2009 against Texas A&M. There were 1,353 people at that game.
