SCOUTING THE COMPETITION BAYLOR Last season, the Lady Bears made it to the semi-finals of the 2014 WCWS in Oklahoma City, Okla. Baylor is currently ranked 15th in the nation and has an overall record of 27-7.
LAST TIME OUT FOR TXST Texas State is coming off of a pair of losses to No. 25 Texas. Last Friday, the Bobcats fell to the Longhorns in five innings by a score of 10-2. On Saturday, Texas State owned a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. A five hit, three run inning by the Longhorns in the bottom of the seventh halted the Bobcats hopes for a victory.
Baylor is coming off of a sweep against conference rival, Texas Tech. This season, Baylor defeated no. 18 Arizona and split with no. 1 Oregon.
ATTENDANCE BARRIERS Against the Longhorns last Friday, Texas State welcomed the second-largest crowd of 986 to the Bobcat Softball Stadium. The largest crowd was in the stadium opener on February 18, 2009 against Texas A&M. There were 1,353 people at that game.
Sophomore Lindsey Cargill leads the Baylor offense with a .414 batting average, 41 hits, 25 runs, and 21 stolen bases. Cargill has started in all 32 of her game appearances and has one home run on the season. Freshman Shelby Friudenberg leads the team with eight home runs and carries a .371 batting average. Heather Stearns carries the Baylor pitching staff with 143 strikeouts over 109.1 innings of work. Stearns is 12-5 on the season, starting 18 of her 25 game appearances. The junior from Plano, Texas, has been a key part of the Baylor defense since her freshman year, sharing time in the circle with former teammate and USA pitcher, Whitney Canion.
NO-HITTER, NO PROBLEM Randi Rupp struck out 11 and was just a hit by pitch away from a perfect game, leading Texas State to its first no-hitter since 2012 against UL Monroe on March 23, 2015. That was the fourth game this season that Rupp had struck out double-digit batters. She has now done it FIVE times with a total of 206 on the year.
