SCOUTING THE COMPETITION GEORGIA SOUTHERN New to the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern is currently 4-13 going into this weekend’s contest. The Eagles are coming off of a 2-1 win against the University of Maine Black Bears.

Player of the Week in the first weekend of the season.

Georgia Southern has lost to Campbell, Tennessee Tech, Bradley and South Florida by only one run.

Last weekend at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic, Ortiz finished with a team-high .417 batting average. Ortiz racked up five hits and four RBI as she launched a grand slam against Connecticut Saturday morning.

Offensively, the Eagles carry a .252 batting average over 17 games so far this season and have hit 12 home runs. Sophomore Taylor Rogers leads the team with a .384 batting average and also leads with 23 hits. In her freshman debut, she earned SoCon Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-SoCon honors, boasting a .381 batting average and racking up 48 hits. In the circle, the Eagle pitching staff has a combined 4.84 ERA. Brooke Red leads the pitching staff with a 4.02 ERA, eight starts and a 3-5 record. Red recorded 124 strikeouts in the 2014 season and has tallied 43 in 55.2 innings of work this season. IMMEDIATE IMPACT... Freshman shortstop Ariel Ortiz was named the Sun Belt Conference

Ortiz finished the weekend with 11 hits, including three home runs, five doubles, and a triple. She tallied a team-high seven RBI and nine runs scored.

BOMBS AWAY At the Madeira Beach Classic, junior first baseman Kendall Wiley was the offensive spark for Texas State after launching six home runs in six games. Against Robert Morris, Wiley hit three home runs, the most home runs in a game by a Sun Belt Conference member since the 2013 season. Her efforts at the Madeira Beach Classic earned her the second Player of the Week nod for Texas State. She now has eight home runs this season, putting her in the top
