Texas State is coming off the team’s first ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in 2013. The Bobcats have repeated as tournament champions just once, in 2004 and 2005, going back-to-back in the Southland Conference. In its effort to repeat, Texas State will have to do it without three major contributors from the 2013 squad: Amari Deardorff, Ashlee Hilbun and Molly Ahrens. Texas State is also incorporating 10 newcomers in 2014.

SETTER OF THE YEAR

Senior setter Caylin Mahoney was named Most Outstanding Player in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and that respect carried over into 2014 when a poll of the SBC coaches awarded Mahoney with the title of SBC Preseason Setter of the Year. She was the only Bobcat recognized on the Sun Belt’s preseason team. Last year, with 1,256 assists, Mahoney upped her career total at Texas State to 1,591 to move into the top five all-time at Texas State.

TABBED SECOND IN THE SUN BELT

In addition to Mahoney being named the Sun Belt’s Preseason Setter of the Year, Texas State was tabbed second in the conference’s preseason poll, notching three first place votes. The Bobcats finished second to UALR which garnered four first place votes and 110 points to Texas State’s 99.

After Texas State in second was new Sun Belt member Georgia Southern in third with two first place votes followed by UT Arlington, South Alabama and UL Lafayette. Another new Sun Belt member, Appalachian State was tabbed seventh followed by Arkansas State, Troy, Georgia State and UL Monroe rounding out the group.

After this opening weekend, Texas State will host Baylor, Big 12 foe, at Strahan Coliseum on Wednesday for the team’s home opener.

before becoming the head coach at New Braunfels High School. Chisum led the Unicorns to a Class 3-A State runner-up finish in 1976, coaching former Texas volleyball and basketball standout Nell Fortner, who later served as head coach of the 2000 USA Olympic team that won a Gold Medal. Fortner recently retired as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn. In 1980, Chisum was named Texas State’s fifth head volleyball coach and is still going strong more than three decades later.

Chisum’s influence in volleyball reaches far beyond Texas State. She serves as a member of both the NCAA and American Volleyball Coaches Association voting committees for regional and national rankings. She has also been a teaching clinician for various volleyball programs and camps throughout the United States.

In 2011, Chisum was named a Texas State Distinguished Alumni. The award dates back to 1959 when it was presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, a U.S. senator at the time. It acknowledges outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the individual’s chosen business, profession or life work on a national or international level.

In 1994, Chisum became the first female to be accepted for membership in the “T” Association’s Hall of Honor. During her intercollegiate days at Texas State, Chisum played on the softball and tennis teams. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest award a letterwinner at Texas State can receive.

Chisum also co-authored a book titled “Developing a Successful Volleyball Program” with former Bobcat volleyball player Stephanie Scott Jordan.
