HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DENNIS FRANCHIONE In his 30th season as a head coach, Dennis Franchione is looking to lead Texas State to its second-straight winning season in the FBS ranks in 2015 after becoming the first coach in the last 32 years to lead the Bobcats to three non-losing seasons in the last four years. Franchione led the Bobcats to a 7-5 record last season despite putting in new offensive and defensive systems. He converted Texas State’s offense to an up-tempo attack that resulted in Robert Lowe becoming the school’s first 1,000yard rusher in five seasons, Tyler Jones developing into the most accurate passer in school history and Texas State ranking among the top four most improved offenses in the nation. He also added a new defensive coordinator to his staff and Texas State produced a Fourth-Team All-American linebacker and Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a pair of NFL Draft picks. Franchione entered the 2015 campaign looking to build on last season’s success by leading the Bobcats to their

second-straight winning season, a feat that Texas State has accomplished just one other time since he led the school to back to back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991. He returned to Texas State in 2011 and began the process of leading the Bobcats in their transition to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). During his first four seasons, he led the Bobcats to 23 wins and at least six wins in three seasons during that span. Franchione is one of just four active NCAA Division I FBS coaches and one of just 18 FBS coaches all-time to record 211 career victories. He began his head-coaching career at Southwestern College in 1981, and compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. The Builders also won a conference championship and had a victory in the 1982 Sunflower Bowl. Following the record-setting season, Franchione was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech for two seasons before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State. During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and five conference titles with a combined 37-1 conference record before being named head coach at Texas State in 1990. He led the Bobcats to a combined 13-9 record in the next two years as the Bobcats posted back-to-back winning records for the first time in the Division I FCS ranks. Franchione coached his first FBS team at New Mexico, and led the Lobos to their first bowl game in 36 years. Then, he turned around a 1-10 team at TCU and led the Horned Frogs to a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl in his first season and to inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl in his second season. He went on to transform a 3-8 Alabama team into a 10-win squad two seasons later. In his first year, he led the Crimson Tide to a 7-5 record and a victory in the Independence Bowl after they began the season with a 3-5 mark. He also led Texas A&M to a nine-win season and three bowl games in five years.

Texas State at UL Lafayette Game Notes QUOTABLE Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione
Players
Response to how the defense has responded this week with the changes in staff. Couldn’t have asked for any better of a response. The guys have bought in and worked hard. They want to do better and it’s important to them. The changes we’ve made as far as schematically are subtle. The biggest changes are more intangible things that needed to change. Techniques and things like that. The accountability and discipline has been good. They guys have worked hard.
Texas State defensive end Karee Berry Team’s response this week… We all have to band together. We know that us losing our defensive coordinator was us losing our identity and a part of us. We just now band together and make sure we know what we have to do and how we are going to do it.
How has the team responded during the bye week? Good, we had three good days of work. Now we will be in game plan preparation. When I started the year with an open date, then a game, then an open date, I wasn’t too excited about that. Now, with where we are at, things we are doing, I think the two open weeks will work to our benefit. On UL Lafayette’s physical nature I don’t think there is any doubt about that. They’re always big, they’re always strong. They’ve always been one the most talented, if not the most talented team in the league. They’re having a few issues right now but at this time last year they were 1-3 and we were 2-2. Not a lot has changed. They are still very talented and still have a lot of big guys. We haven’t been much of a speed bump to them in the past couple of years so hopefully we’re going to play them better.
What keeps you going every day? To win and to be better. Every day to get a little bit better and make sure that we get more wins and that we can go to a bowl game. Whenever our families come out and see us, or people see us on TV, they have something good to look through. There is so much to play for. The mindset moving forward with a fresh start… Go win. Go be better and do whatever you have to do. Make sure that whatever you are doing, it’s better that what we were. It’s a new season, it’s a new slate. Let’s go be better. Texas State wide receiver Brandon Smith On going back to play against UL Lafayette… It’s always fun to go back to play UL Lafayette. It’s a nice college environment. Conference is a new season, new opportunities. Its teams like UL Lafayette that you have to beat to get to a bowl game. It’s do or die right now. That’s the way we have to take every game.
