HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DENNIS FRANCHIONE Beginning his 30th season as a head coach, Dennis Franchione is looking to lead Texas State to its second-straight winning season in the FBS ranks in 2015 after becoming the first coach in the last 32 years to lead the Bobcats to three non-losing seasons in the last four years. Franchione led the Bobcats to a 7-5 record last season despite putting in new offensive and defensive systems. He converted Texas State’s offense to an up-tempo attack that resulted in Robert Lowe becoming the school’s first 1,000yard rusher in five seasons, Tyler Jones developing into the most accurate passer in school history and Texas State ranking among the top four most improved offenses in the nation. He also added a new defensive coordinator to his staff and Texas State produced a Fourth-Team All-American linebacker and Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a pair of NFL Draft picks. Franchione enters the 2015 campaign looking to build on last season’s success by leading the Bobcats to their

second-straight winning season, a feat that Texas State has accomplished just one other time since he led the school to back to back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991. He returned to Texas State in 2011 and began the process of leading the Bobcats in their transition to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). During his first four seasons, he led the Bobcats to 23 wins and at least six wins in three seasons during that span. Franchione enters the 2015 campaign with a 210-126-2 career record. He is one of just four active NCAA Division I FBS coaches and one of just 18 FBS coaches all-time to record 210 career victories. He began his head-coaching career at Southwestern College in 1981, and compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. The Builders also won a conference championship and had a victory in the 1982 Sunflower Bowl. Following the record-setting season, Franchione was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech for two seasons before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State. During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and five conference titles with a combined 37-1 conference record before being named head coach at Texas State in 1990. He led the Bobcats to a combined 13-9 record in the next two years as the Bobcats posted back-to-back winning records for the first time in the Division I FCS ranks. Franchione coached his first FBS team at New Mexico, and led the Lobos to their first bowl game in 36 years. Then, he turned around a 1-10 team at TCU and led the Horned Frogs to a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl in his first season and to inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl in his second season. He went on to transform a 3-8 Alabama team into a 10-win squad two seasons later. In his first year, he led the Crimson Tide to a 7-5 record and a victory in the Independence Bowl after they began the season with a 3-5 mark. He also led Texas A&M to a nine-win season and three bowl games in five years.

The Bobcats began playing football in 1904 when they posted a 5-1 record. Texas State did not play football in 1942, 1945 and 1946. The Bobcats have won 13 conference championships during their history. SECOND TIME AROUND In addition to Dennis Franchione returning to Texas State as head coach in 2011, two other members of his staff previously coached at the school. Assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Schultz was a secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas State in 1990-91. Defensive line coach Mike Hudson was a student coach in 1987-89 and graduate assistant coach at Texas State under Franchione in 1990 and 1991. He returned as linebackers coach from 199500 and defensive coordinator in 2001-02 before rejoining Coach Fran in 2011. NEW COACHING STAFF MEMBERS Texas State has just one new assistant coach in 2015, as Ashley Ambrose serves as the cornerbacks coach. Ambrose comes to Texas State after coaching last season at Idaho and playing 13 seasons in the NFL. He also coached two seasons at California and three years at Colorado. He also served as an NFL coaching intern at Atlanta and New Orleans. TWO STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS After recording a 7-5 record in 2014, Texas State looks for its second straight winning season in the NCAA Division I ranks in 2015. If the Bobcats win seven or more games in 2015, it would mark just the third time since 1984 that the Bobcats have had two back-to-back winning seasons. The only other two times came in 1990 and 1991 when Dennis Franchione was serving a head coach for the third time and in 2008 and 2009. WHO’S BACK Texas State returns 44 lettermen from the 2014 season in which Texas State posted its first winning record as a member of the NCAA Division I FBS and second season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats have 22 lettermen returning on offense and 22 returning on defense. Texas State returns eight starters on offense and six starters on defense. TEXAS STATE IN HOME OPENERS Texas State enters the Prairie View A&M game looking to win its 19th home opener in the last 20 years after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 65-0 last season. The Bobcats had won 17 straight home openers dating back to 1996 before dropping the first home game in 2012 against Texas Tech. Texas State has an all-time record of 45-21-1 in home openers dating back to 1948.

The Bobcats were a member of the WAC in 2012 before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2013. It marked the first time that two Bobcats were chosen in the same draft since 2000 when three players were selected in the sixth and seventh rounds. Texas State vs Prairie View A&M Game Notes QUOTABLE Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione On evaluating Florida State tape “I think we got better in some areas. We found out about some of our guys. That’s a hard game to evaluate in a lot of ways. You can’t help but leave not feeling great because we didn’t win the game and it got away from us a little bit. We won’t be playing ACC teams the rest of the year. We’ll need more time to evaluate and judge. I know it was a great learning experience and a great teaching video for the guys to see, learn from and to correct mistakes.” On having just one penalty vs Florida State “Not only the atmosphere, but also when you play great athletes like that, sometimes you get on the edge and your apt to have more problems. We handled the communication with the crowd noise very well. We worked on it for two weeks. We only turned it over once and that was late. If we can continue to do those things, we’ll avoid beating ourselves and make teams have to beat us.” On 23 guys making their FBS debut at Fla. St. “That’s certainly trial by fire no doubt about that. We got to play about 65 guys and we traveled about 74. Just about everybody got into the game for a little bit and those are experiences they can draw from as we go into the next game and they can learn from it. That was a tough setting so they got their baptism by fire in Division I football.”
