I am extremely honored to take on the role of TYA/USA Board President. It is an incredible opportunity to work with the membership to champion and support our field and the young people we serve. During the last two years TYA/USA has experienced amazing forward momentum. Almost every part of the organization has been touched by efforts to apply our imaginations and reinvent what is possible. Looking ahead I see many more opportunities to strengthen our programs, to make resources available for our members and to drive the organization to the next level.

Karen Sharp, President TYA/USA

Great work is already in progress including a redesigned Marquee, Professional Development Webinars, and we are already counting down the days to the May 2013 One Theatre World convening at Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare, with the theme of IGNITE: Creativity… Connection…Collaboration.

In the midst of all the work that has been accomplished and all the possibilities that lay ahead, I want to thank each of you for your contributions to the field and invite you to please contact me with your ideas, comments and suggestions. Together we will do our best work. Cheers, Karen Sharp Education Director, Seattle Children's Theatre President, TYA/USA

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kathleen Anderson Culebro, Artistic Director, Amphibian Stage Productions, Ft. Worth, TX What was the first TYA play that you remember seeing? My first live theater experience was Pippin on Broadway with the original cast: Ben Vereen, Jill Clayburgh, Irene Ryan. It changed my life.

Biggest career mentors? Biggest career mentors in terms of our outreach work with kids are Laura Anderson Barbata and The Brooklyn Jumbies. I saw their work with kids and saw how they were having such a tremendous impact on kids’ lives by showing them a skill that raises their self-esteem, gets them moving, and teaches them about other cultures. NEWS DRAMATIC CHANGE PRE-CONFERENCE In a first-ever joint collaboration, the American Alliance for Theatre and Education and Theatre for Young Audiences USA have come together to create DRAMATIC CHANGE: An Anti-Bullying Initiative. We believe that we as theatre artists, scholars and educators are uniquely well-positioned to make a difference in the landscape of bullying. We know that theatre and its techniques allow participants the opportunity to explore, challenge and examine social issues and topics through a fictional fourth-wall, but with a real look at the life changing consequences. With our national communities of playwrights, producing theatre companies, teaching artists, researchers, classroom teachers and drama specialists, our mandate is to tackle the epidemic of bullying in all its complexity, in ways that only the theatre arts can. This pre-conference will go in-depth, exploring performances, interactive applied theatre models, lesson plans, and media resources to raise the awareness needed to empower our youth to make changes toward reaching a more civil society that celebrates our differences rather than exploiting them. The day-long event will feature interactive workshops from highly respected theatre programs from around the country allowing participants access to the best anti-bullying
