WCR Kingsbury 116 P - Son Dam of one of the hottest young sires out there, WCR Kingsbury 116 P. Valued at $21,000 in our 2012 sale (1/2 interest & 1/2 possession sold for $10,500), Kingsbury had his first class of progeny go through our 2014 sale, averaging $11,750 on 9 head including WCR Sir Kingsbury 374 P selling to Weber Charolais for $27,000. As a calf she had performance ratios of 113/114 and now her WW & YW EPDs rank her in the top 1 & 2% of the breed. On the top side, 9132 is out of PowerEdge, a Schurrtop bull that goes back to Duke 261. On the bottom, her dam is a D040 granddaughter X Duke 17J, a prolific producer with 7 calves in 7 years for a 101 WW ratio average. We have used 7228 as a donor and she has done a tremendous job. Her first natural calf became a show heifer and was the heaviest yearling weight female in our herd that year. The reason she became a donor was because of her second calf, an outstanding herd sire prospect that we became extremely excited about before he broke his leg. WCR Ranch History
1958: In May, Arnold purchased his first Charolais bull (15/16) from the Litton Charolais Ranch near Chillicothe, Missouri after reading about the power of crossbreeding in Farm Journal. After long letters and several phone calls, Arnold purchased the bull sight unseen. At the time, nearly all the cattle in South Dakota were straight Angus, Hereford, or Shorthorn. Arnold planned to use the Charolais bull on his Hereford cows. 1958: On June 1, Arnold Wienk and Carol Casper were married in Lake Preston, S.D. 1959: In March, the Wienks traveled to visit the Litton Ranch. Following their visit, they purchased about six Charolais cows and their first purebred Charolais bull. Initially, the couple met resistance from local bankers. They were not interested in investing in a breed they had never heard of – it was the first of many times Arnold and Carol advocated for the Charolais breed. 1960s: Arnold began converting his Hereford herd to Charolais. Soon after, he began selling private-treaty off the ranch. After seeing the benefits of crossbreeding in his herd, he knew he couldn’t keep it a secret. He said, “We thought that the Charolais breed could really help the future of the beef industry.” 1960s: Arnold leased part interest in a well-known French Charolais bull nicknamed “Bingo.” At the time, American-International Charolais Association (AICA) rules stated that a person could only artificially inseminate (AI) five cows to a bull they didn’t own. The choice to lease “Bingo” allowed the Wienks to improve the genetics of their herd at a fast rate. 1960s: Arnold helped form the Upper Midwest Charolais Association and served as the secretarytreasurer during its entire nineyear existence. 1960s: Arnold and two others petitioned the South Dakota State Fair Board for three years, eventually convincing them to allow Charolais to be exhibited. Two years later, the board finally allowed them to create a Charolais Show. 1965: Arnold traveled to Garnett, Kansas to attend the Graham School for Cattlemen, where he learned to AI. After returning he took over the AI responsibilities in his Charolais herd, giving him a greater ability to improve the genetics of his seedstock herd.

1969: Utilizing the experience Arnold gained managing consignment sales for the Upper Midwest Charolais Association, the Wienks hosted their first sale in Lake Preston, SD. SALE
1971: Partnering with Warren Hannah, the Wienks purchased the first full French Charolais bull, Facco C09, to enter South Dakota. Unlike many other French bulls of this era, Facco C09 did not have calving issues. 1978 & 1980: Daughters Deb and Kim married local farmers and ranchers. Wienk Charolais Ranch (WCR) helped both young families get started in the Charolais breed. Eventually, both couples started their own herds and are still in business today. 1981: The Wienks traveled to Canada to view Charolais cattle imported from France. At the time, some of the Charolais bloodlines coming out of Canada were not good, causing heavy calves and hurting the reputation of the Charolais breed. Arnold said, “I avoided those bloodlines and tried to focus on selecting for calving ease and good disposition.” 1981: While Arnold served as AICA president, the Wienks traveled to the Charolais World Federation meeting in Spain. 1982: WCR introduced embryo transfer technology into the herd. 1985: Daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Jeff Eschenbaum, joined Wienk Charolais as partners. 1980s & 90s: WCR continued to show practical Charolais cattle, even when the trends in the show ring moved away from reality. Arnold said, “There were many times when we were close to the bottom of the class in the show ring, but we would end up selling a truck load of cattle to a producer who was at the fair and liked what they saw.” 2009: WCR became one of the few breeders in the United States to participate in DNA testing research with the Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska. The DNA research continues in 2014, with testing being done on the WCR cattle each year. 2010: Grandson, Sterling Eschenbaum, and wife Courtney, joined Wienk Charolais as the third generation following Sterling’s graduation from South Dakota State University. Sterling earned a degree in Animal Science with minors in Ag Business and Ag Marketing. 2013: Ryker John Eschenbaum was born on August 15, 2013. He is the fourth generation at WCR. COMING SOON! A book titled: WIENK CHAROLAIS RANCH - The History of South Dakota’s Pioneer Charolais Seedstock Herd will be published as a collection of Arnold & Carol’s stories of their life together and love for Charolais cattle from 1958 to the present. Copies will be available sale day!

Arnold and Carol Wienk
In May of 1958, Arnold purchased his first Charolais bull from Litton Charolais in Missouri. A few weeks later he was married to Carol Casper on June 1, 1958. SALE
Moving Forward... Wienk Charolais will be entering its 57th year in 2015. Starting with Arnold’s parents, LeRoy & Francis Wienk, Ryker John will be part of the 5th generation involved in our operation. Charolais cattle have been our way of life since 1958; we have taken care of them and they have taken care of us. Moving forward, the WCR prefix will stand for the same vision and traditions that have been passed down for decades. Our focus will be centered on providing seed stock Charolais genetics to the commercial cattleman and seed stock operator with the same integrity and customer service that they have grown to expect. Our 46th annual bull sale will be held on April 25th, 2015 and will feature our largest class of bulls to date, including the progeny of the cows in this sale. We hope that in your eyes it is evident that we believe our cowherd is our greatest asset; a factory where genetics are proven and great herd sires and donors are born. As such, we will not hold an annual female in the future and WCR females will be offered on an extremely limited basis. We appreciate your confidence in our genetics and our program in the past and look forward to working with you in the future. We have sure enjoyed ourselves so far and look forward to the next 57 years. -All of us at Wienk Charolais
Excellence. Integrity. Tradition. "Arnold truly cares about the Charolais breed and its' breeders. Over the years and many phone conversations and face-to-face visits, I have gained a great deal of knowledge about the breed. I'm always motivated after one of our conversations. I like to explore pedigrees as I study Charolais cattle - it's always interesting to note the presence of the WCR prefix in many of the breed's most influential genetics." "For many years, Arnold used the phrase 'Our Guarantee - Customer Satisfaction' in advertising. Along with producing a Charolais product that worked for the customer, he worked extremely hard to treat his customers or any Charolais breeder with a great deal of respect. He stood behind what he produced." "The WCR prefix is in good hands with the Eschenbaum family. The next generation, Sterling and Ty are innovative and most importantly, want to do things right from planning the next calf crop to assisting bull customers." -David Hobbs, American-International Charolais Association
