Wharf Partner Moves

Are you a Leader with a Following? or generate most of your fees from internal referrals, then the chances are that you do not have a distinct following.

ARE you a partner looking to make a lateral move to another firm in Canary Wharf or the City? You need to prove you have a profitable and portable practice – a client following – that you can take to your new firm.

However, if you have a strong relationship with clients who repeatedly instruct you directly, then they are likely to continue working with you if you were to move firms.

What is a Client Following? A client following is the amount of work that a partner expects to be able to undertake at their new firm from their established clients and contacts.

How is a Following Quantified? For many firms, a following is seen very much as an arithmetic calculation based on historical client billings. Savvy City firms will undertake due diligence to test the viability of the numbers within your following. Some other firms take a slightly more pragmatic view and will undertake an analysis of the strength of your client relationships.

It is not something that can be created over a short space of time. Many City partners, although leaders in their field, never manage to successfully build a real following and so aren’t marketable as lateral partners. Often, the larger the firm you are with, the more difficult it is to develop a client following. If you spend all your time working for your firm’s institutional clients

Typically, as a new partner within

Canary Wharf and the City, you might expect to be paid a third of your estimated client following – but this is negotiable, especially if the firm has made a strategic decision to grow a specific practice area. Making the Right Partner Move An initial lack of following is not an absolute bar to making a move. As the legal recruitment market continues to improve, the City is experiencing a return to conditions where firms are willing to make increased strategic investments in core areas. A client following is regarded as the ‘icing on the cake’, rather than the cake itself.

Darryn Hale P a rtner, Taylor Root http: //www. taylorroot. com/

Stick close and get under the skin of your clients – this will both ease your path to promotion at your existing firm as well as making you more marketable if you look to move.
