FIRE STATION 8 TYLOR KERPAN / HORTON / ADE 522
1997 ASU IS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE MAP. APS POWERPLANT IS ESTABLISHED. RIO SALADO IS NOT A DAM YET. LOOP 202 IS NOT ESTABLISHED. RESIDENTIAL DEVLOPMENT AND ASU IS WHAT TEMPE IS CONSISTED OF.
2009 TEMPE TOWN LAKE IS ESTABLISHED. CONSTRUCTION ALONG THE LAKE IS STARTED. APS POWERPLANT HAS GROWN. TEMPE MARKETPLACE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER IS DEVELOPED. LOOP 202 IS A MAJOR HIGHWAY. LIGHTRAIL WAS ADDED TO CONNECT ASU THROUGH ITS CAMPUS’S (PHOENIX-MESA).
2019 TEMPE TOWN LAKE IS DEVELOPED. TEMPE MARKETPLACE IS GETTING AN EXTENSION. ASU KARSTEN IS BEING RE-DEVELOPED INTO THE INNOVATION CORRIDOR. APS EXPANDED. MORE RESIDENTIAL NORTH OF LAKE.
CONTEXT
MASTERPLAN OF THE FUTURE INNOVATION CORRIDOR ASU AND TEMPE ARE PROPOSING. DENSE COMMUNITY FILLED WITH MIXED-USE BUILDINGS. THE IDEA IS TO LURE BUSINESSES IN. THIS WILL BE COMPLETELY SEPERATE FROM ASU. THERE ARE SEVERAL PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES TO TRANSPORT PEOPLE. GRINK LINKWAYS TO THE TOWN LAKE SO IT IS EASILY ACCESIBLE. THE ATHLETIC VILLAGE WILL BE A SPOT FOR TRAINING AND RECREATIONAL SPORTS IN THE ASU COMMUNITY.
SITE RENDERING TO GIVE CHARACTER TO THE PROPOSED MASTERPLAN WITH SOME CONTEXT. EXTREMELY DENSE PROPOSED PLAN, WITH “COOKIECUTTER” MIXED-USE BUILDINGS. FROM THIS RENDERING, THERE IS LITTLE CHARACTER TO THE PROPOSED CORRIDOR. THIS SITE COULD BE USED TO LURE IN BUSINESS HEADQUARTERS TO CREATE A CAMPUS, BUT TEMPE FAILED TO FIND CLIENTS. AMAZON IS A BIG EXAMPLE. THIS WILL BE THE CHARACTER OF TEMPE FOR THE NEXT 75+ YEARS.
FUTURE
HOW DO I DESIGN A FIRESTATION TO EVOLVE OVER 75+ YEARS? MATERIALS
FLEXABILITY
OUTDOOR SPACES
OBSERVATION AREAS
HOW DO I PROVIDE AN OUTLET FOR FIREFIGHTERS TO OVERCOME TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES THEY ENCOUNTER ON THE JOB?
GATHERING SPACES
CONNECTION TO NATURE
HOW CAN I ENHANCE COMMRADERY BUT RESPECT PRIVACY?
FORMABLE SPACES
OUTDOOR NICHES
HOW CAN I EFFECTIVELY SEPERATE WORK AND LIVING, BUT ALSO INCLUDE COMMUNITY?
STANCE
GIVEN PROGRAM WITH THE GIVEN PROGRAM, I CREATED 4 CATEGORIES; TECHNICAL(DARK RED), PUBLIC(RED), SEMI-PUBLIC(GREY), AND PRIVATE(WHITE). THIS HELPED ME START TO GROUP PROGRAM TOGETHER AND FIND ADJACENCIES. WITH THESE FINDINGS, THRESHHOLDS WERE ESTABLISHED.
CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION THE BUILDING IS COMPRISED OF 4 CORES WITH 2 CONNECTORS CONNECTING THE SPACES. PUBLIC/WORK CORE IS THE RED, TECHNICAL CORE CONSISTED OF THE APP BAY IS THE DARK RED, BATTALION CORE IS THE GREY, WHILE THE FIRE FIGHTER CORE IS THE WHITE. THE CONNECTORS HELP CREATE MOVEMENT THROUGH THE CORES. PROGRAM DESIGN WHEN CONNECTING THE PIECES WITH THE INCLUSION OF THE SITE, A LINEAR PATH IS ESTABLISHED TO INCREASE FOOT TRAFFIC FROM THE INNOVATION CORRIDOR. CLEAR DISTINCTION IN PUBLIC VS PRIVATE SPACE WITHIN THE PROGRAM AND WITH THE FACADE. COURTYARD SPACES AND ATRIUMS ARE INCLUDED. SEMI-PUBLIC AND SEMIPRIVATRE COURTYARDS.
PARTI
THE INTENT OF THE FLOOR PLAN WAS TO CLEARLY SEPERATE THE PUBLIC AND THE PRIVATE ASPECTS IN THE BUILDING. THE EAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING IS DESIGNATED TO THE PUBLIC. THE GARAGE OR THE APPARATUS BAY, IS THE KEY SEPERATOR BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE. THE PRIVATE IS CONSISTED OF THE LIVING QUARTERS OF THE BATTALION AND FIRE FIGHTER. A BREAKDOWN OF THE INDIVIDUAL ROOMS IS COMING LATER IN THE BOOKLET.

THE SITE PLAN IS TO ENGAGE THE FIRE FIGHTERS AND THE PUBLIC. THIS IS DEMONSTRATED BY THE MULTI-PURPOSE PATH OF STABILIZED DECOMPOSED GRANITE. COURTYARDS ARE PLACED AROUND THE BUILDING FOR SEMI-PUBLIC ACTIVITIES. PICKLE BALL COURT IS LOCATED IN THE NORTH EAST.

THIS PART OF THE BUILDING IS PERTAINING TO THE PUBLIC AND APPARATUS BAY BUILDING FACADE. THE IDEA OF THIS IS AN OKATECH TECHNOLOGY. THIS TECHNOLOGY IS ESSENTIALL TRIPLE PANE GLASS WITH A COPPER MESH IN THE MIDDLE. THE IDEA BEHIND THE MESH IS THAT THE WINTER SUN CAN COME INTO THE BUILDING, WHILE THE SUMMER SUN CAN NOT. THE CASE STUDY IS A BUILDING DESIGNED BY DAVID CHIPPERFIELD IN IOWA. DURING THE DAY, THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING CAN NOT BEEN SEEN, BUT AS NIGHT COMES AND THE LIGHT COMES ON, THE INTERIOR OF THE SPACE IS SEEABLE. AS THE APPARATUS BAY LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS TURNED ON, THIS WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR THE PUBLIC TO LOOK INTO THE APPARATUS BAY AND PUBLIC BUILDING. THIS FACADE OF THE BUILDING WILL ALWAYS BE IN A PRESTINE CONDITION BECAUSE THE COPPER MESH WILL NOT BE EXPOSED TO OXYGEN. AS TIME PROGRESS AND THE FIRE STATION GROWS OLD, THIS SIDE OF THE BUILDING WILL ALWAYS BE THIS PRESTINE COPPER CONDITION. THIS WILL CREATE A BEACON FOR THE NEW INNOVATION CORRIDOR.
Concrete Cavity Wall Insulation
Double- pane glass
THE LIVING QUARTERS HAS A DIFFERENT FACADE SYSTEM TO JUXTAPOSE THE APPARATUS BAY. THIS WOULD BE A PERFORATED COPPER PANEL SYSTEM OVER DOUBLE PANE GLASS. USING COPPER TO SHOWCASE THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF COPPER WAS A CRUCIAL PART OF THIS PROJECT. AS THE FIRE STATION GROWS OLD, THIS PART OF THE FACADE WILL GROW WITH THE FIRE FIGHTERS AND THE COMMUNITY. WHEN THE CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETED, IDEALLY THE TWO FACADES WOULD LOOK SIMILIAR AND LOOK LIKE ONE COMPLETE BUILDING, BUT AS THE FIRE STATION GROWS, THE LIVING QUARTERS FACADE WOULD OXIDIZED AND START TO DARKEN.

PASSIVE STRATEGIES
DAYLIGHTING WAS A FACTOR IN HOW THE BUILDING WAS LAID OUT. THE SECTION CUT DEMONSTRATES THE MIDDLE COURTYARD IN THE BUILDING, THIS WOULD BE A SEMI-PRIVATE COURTYARD FOR THE FIRE FIGHTERS. THE ATRIUM SPACES ARE HIGHLIGHTED BELOW IN YELLOW IN THE SECTION. THE SPACES ARE FLEXABLE AND CAN OPEN UP TO THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM. ALSO HIGHLIGHTED IN THE SECTION IS THE OBSERVATION AREAS WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN COME TO BUILDING AND LOOK INTO THE FIREFIGHTERS WORKING.
SCALE: 1:30
BUILDING ORIENTATION WAS IMPORTANT WHEN EXAMINING THE SITE AND LOOKING AT ENERGY ANALYSIS PROGRAMS. A LONG THIN BUILDING IN ARIZONA WORKS EXTREMELY WELL BECAUSE YOU ARE LIMITING THE HEAT GAIN ON THE EASTERN AND WESTERN FACADES. FROM PREVIOUS ITERATIONS, A MODEL SIMILIAR TO THE FINAL MODEL, WAS THE MOST EFFICIENT, SO IN TURN, I WNTED TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO MY DESIGN TO MAKE IT WORK.

THE LIVING QUARTERS IS DESIGNED TO BE FLEXIBLE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE STATION. THE LOCKERS CAN ROTATE TO THE OPEN GATHERING SPACE. THIS IS INTENDED TO INCREASE COMRADERY WITHIN THE FIRE STATION, WHILE ALSO RESPECTING THEIR PRIVACY. THERE IS 2 ATRIUMS IN THE FLOOR PLAN, THIS IS A SPACE WHERE THE FIRE FIGHTERS CAN GO OUT AND CONNECT TO NATURE WITHOUT THE PUBLIC APPROACHING.
SCALE; 1/16”=1’-0”

THIS SECTION IS ASSESING THE MECHANICAL SOLUTION TO THE FIRESTATION. THE TOP DRAWING IS DETAILING THE PRESSURE ZONES IN THE BUILDING, THE KEY NOTE HERE IS THAT THE APPARATUS BAY ALONG WITH AREAS THAT SUPPORT IT ARE “HOT ZONES” AND ARE NEGATIVE PRESSURE. LIVING QUARTERS, OFFICES, AND COMMUNITY ROOM ARE ALL “COLD ZONES” WITH POSITIVE PRESSURE. COLD ZONE POSITIVE PRESSURE
HOT ZONE NEGATIVE PRESSURE
HOT ZONE NEGATIVE PRESSURE

THE BOTTOM DRAWING IS IDENTIFYING THE DUCT LAYOUT IN THE BUILDING. THE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE IS THE RADIANT COOLING SYSTEMS IN THE APPARATUS BAY. THE ENERGY IS STORED IN THE CONCRETE SLAB, WHICH THEN RADIATES INTO THE SURROUNDING SPACE. IN THE APPARATUS BAY, THERE IS A VEHICLE EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THE BAY FOR THE APPARATUS’S. THIS IS TO HELP ELIMINATE EMISSIONS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CANCER TO FIRE FIGHTERS.

THE PUBLIC RENDERING IS DETAILING THE OBSERVATION AREA WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN COME AND INTERACT WITH THE FIRE FIGHTERS WITHOUT INTERUPTING THEM. THE SEMI-PUBLIC RENDERING IS SHOWING THE PICKLE BALL COURT. THIS IS A SPACE WHERE THE COMMUNITY CAN COME AND INTERACT WITH THE FIRE FIGHTERS. THE FITNESS ROOM CAN OPEN UP INTO THIS AREA.
PUBLIC
SEMI-PUBLIC
THIS RENDERING IS HIGHLIGHTING THE KITCHEN FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE ATRIUM. THE ABILITY TO OPEN THE DOORS AND INTERACT WITH THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM CREATE A FLEXIBLE SPACE.
SEMI-PRIVATE
THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE 3 IMAGES IS SHOWING THE FLEXABILITY OF THE DORMS. THE GATHERING SPACE IN THE MIDDLE IS TO INCREASE COMRADERY WITHIN THE FIRE FIGHTERS.
