More renewable energy A MAJORITY of Wangaratta Chronicle webpoll voters believe renewable energy options, such as solar, wind, wave and hydro, should be explored to tackle the rising cost of energy. Of those who participated in the online poll, 178 people voted to explore renewable energy options, 103 voted for nuclear power, 68 voted for coal and 18 voted for on-shore gas production. Our latest web poll question is: With the continued rise in women’s sport, should terms such as ‘backman’ or ‘man-up’ become gender neutral? To vote visit www.wangarattachronicle.com.au.

Gang members arrested MEMBERS of the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang, including a man from Wangaratta, were arrested and charged this week as part of an ongoing investigation into criminal activity in Albury. Police arrested the 26-year-old in Wangaratta and extradited him to Albury NSW. Detectives from Albury Local Area Command established Strike Force Stoutland to investigate the manufacture and supply of prohibited drugs and a number of organised criminal associates within the Albury area. Police will allege their inquiries revealed a significant drug supply network, which included a number of organised criminal groups.

Big hearted tradies

LOCAL tradies have responded overwhelmingly to the call in last Friday’s Wangaratta Chronicle to help build a new home donated by Cavalier Homes Albury Wodonga for the Holt family. Cavalier Homes had responded to the story of David and Helen Holt and their four grandchildren, who were tragically left orphaned on Anzac Day, who currently live in a two bedroom home. The Albury Wodonga firm said they would supply a new home and all the building products so all that was needed were some caring tradies prepared to donate their time to put the home together. The 4 Kids and Carers Future

TRADIES who’ve volunteered so far to help build the family’s new Cavalier Home are: • Ian McGillivray, Steve Pronk electricians, Bright District Electrical; • ‘Stretch’ Everett plumbing supervisor; • Ray Griffin bricklayer; • Graham Harper plasterer (Bright); • Hinton Earthworks (Bright); • North East Civil Construction (site fence and landscaping); • Don Cook, Cooks Earthmoving & Laser Land Forming Pty Ltd; • Jim Bordignon, Bordignons Earthmoving; and • Clayton Hines, Hines Plumbing and Gas Fitting.

Foundation (4KCFF), which was established to raise funds and assist in the financial well-being of the children and their carers, secured a block of land on the outskirts of Wangaratta as the building site. Jason Reid, 4KCFF chairman, described the response from tradies as “amazing”. “Bright and District Electrical, who have already worked on the site, have said they would do all the electrical work required, Ray Griffin will

do the brickwork, Graham Harper the plastering, Hinton Earthworks will do all the earthmoving and Don Cook from Cooks Earthmoving will supply the road base and packing sand,” Mr Reid said. “A retired plumber, Stretch Everett, contacted us and said he would not only organise the plumbing but he was confident he would be able to get any tradies needed to finish the job.” Stretch said, although he didn’t

know the family, when he heard about the call for tradies he knew he could help. “It’s a great cause and I knew I could do something for them,” he said. “I will catch up with Paul Hodgkin (Cavalier Homes coowner and project manager on the build) to see who else he needs.” One of the first mates Stretch organised to lend a hand on the project was Jim Bordignon from Bordignon Excavations who will do whatever is required to help on the build. The 4 Kids and Carers Future Foundation is a registered charitable organisation and able to offer full tax benefits to donors. Any tradespeople interested in being a part of this project are welcome to contact Jason Reid (4KCFF president) on 0419 360 728, or Paul Hodgkin (Cavalier Homes) on 0409 596 736.
