A little longer than we had hoped, but the wait was worth it! After a lengthy process of evaluation and adjudication of bids submitted on 5th July 2013 in response to SANParks Request for Proposals (issued in April 2013), SANParks has announced that the successful bidder is Skukuza Airport Management Company (Pty) Ltd, owned jointly by Lion Sands, Federal Air and Airlink. Skukuza Airport Management Company will in turn contract with: Lion Sands for the provision of hospitality and retail services; Federal Air for the provision of non-scheduled feeder air services connecting Skukuza airport with lodges that are beyond reasonable land transfer distance; and Airlink for the provision of scheduled air services linking Skukuza with OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and King Shaka International Airport (and via these hubs, with the rest of the world). Skukuza Airport Management Company will take over the operation of the Skukuza airport on 1st September 2013 and commence with the alterations and improvements essential to bring the airport to the international standard required to allow the operation of scheduled passenger services on airline category aircraft. It is envisaged that the upgraded airport will be operational by 1 November 2013, and fully licensed to accept scheduled flights in the first quarter of 2014 with scheduled flights re-commencing in March 2014. Inaugural scheduled and non-scheduled flights are therefore likely to take place on 1 March 2014. It is currently planned to offer a daily flight from Cape Town, and double daily flights from Johannesburg. Flight schedules and fares will be circulated to the travel trade imminently, and flight seat inventory will be displayed and bookable in the GDS during August 2013. The return of scheduled air services to Skukuza airport is significant in the context of South African tourism as this will allow all tourism stakeholders the ability to provide a far more

integrated and effective product to the global market. With the benefit of efficiencies of scale, costing improvements will in time reflect in the pricing of product.

Thanks to direct air services, time spent in the bush will be maximised, rather than on lengthy road transfers. It goes without saying that this will present a more convenient option to travellers. In compiling the operational plan for the airport and its associated air services, the Skukuza Airport Management Company has been sensitive to the environmental concerns associated with operations in a protected wildlife surrounding. This reflects in a comprehensive environmental management plan, together with strategies and plans to both manage and route air-traffic in such a way as to limit the noise impact of operations in the area. The physical design of the new airport building structures as a part of the refurbishment has also followed an overarching minimized environmental impact philosophy. Skukuza Airport Management Company is pleased to have been able to partner with a number of community development trusts with a view to working in close cooperation with the local communities and SANParks employees to the benefit of all. It is therefore significant and exciting for Skukuza Airport Management Company and its stakeholders to have been chosen by SANParks to operate the airport and services.

Dutch landing European settlement in South Africa started in Cape Town, which is why it is still called the Mother City to this day. After the British had decided against establishment of a colony at the Cape of Good Hope, it was the Dutch who realized the strategic and economic importance of the Cape. On a commission for the Dutch-East India Trading company the merchant Jan van Riebeeck anchored in the picturesque bay at the foot of the Table Mountain on April 6, 1652.

April 6 1652

Cape Of Good Hope He was accompanied by 82 men and 8 women, his own wife amongst them. They had been instructed to establish a strong base to provide the Company's ships with fresh groceries, mainly meat and vegetables on the long journey from Europe to Asia. First of all, van Riebeeck's men erected the "Fort de Goede Hoop" for their own protection, and they laid out a large garden and started to grow fruit and vegetables. They tried to obtain the meat provisions through trade with the natives. .

In 1652 the first VOC employees arrived at the Cape on the ship Drommedaris, Reijer ,Goede Hoope and were shorly folowed by a second batch of VOC employees on the Walvis and Oliphant. All were male and some were accompanied by slaves. Their leader was Jan Antoniszoon van Riebeeck. His instructions were clear from the Council of Privy to build a fort for protection that remains a tourist attraction in Cape Town to this day and use the men sent to the Cape to establish a vegetable garden and secure pasturage for the cattle and to establish a hospital. The settlement like all VOC settlements was Governed by a Governer at the head of a 17 member Council of Policy. He established the VOC vegetable garden at what is today called the Garden at the top of Adderley Street and adjacent to what is to date St Georges Cathedral. The first hospital was established in the 5 corner stone fort he built.

The Council of Policy of the Cape felt that private land grants would be more productive than a centralized vegetable garden. In 1677 they started formally registereing these land grants, along with slaves and debentures. This is an early Slave Grant issued in favour of A. Hinloopun. This is one of the very first Slave Grants formally registered and started a century of conflict with the VOC Company who claimed ownership to all of the cape and wanted the men sent to the Cape to work in the Gardens and attend to their cattle and establish a refreshment station at the Cape for their ships bound for India, Indonesia and Malaysia. The early VOC settlers took dark skinned Hottentots and Griqua and other indigenous women as the common law wifes and their decendants gave rise to what are called the "Cape Coloured Race" Cape Town Slaves in the 1700s.

Four Seasons continues to expand its presence in Africa, signing a long term management agreement with the owners of The Westcliff hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. The iconic property, set on a cliffside garden estate in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, was closed on June 30, 2013 to undergo significant enhancements including renovations and new construction and will reopen as Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff Johannesburg in the second quarter of 2014. "Africa's economic growth, improved stability and ease of travel have made the continent increasingly attractive to luxury travellers and Four Seasons," says Scott Woroch, executive vice president worldwide development for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. "Having a property in Johannesburg – the gateway to the whole of southern Africa - is essential as we explore opportunities for growth in South Africa, and across the continent," continues Woroch. "With our recently established development office in Dubai, we plan to be much more active in Africa, pursuing both new build developments and conversion opportunities such as The Westcliff in Johannesburg and Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, which opened last year."

An expanded outdoor terrace will be a focal point of the Hotel's dining experience, offering stunning vistas of the city's dense tree canopy and the distant Magaliesberg hills, with sunset views that are unparalleled in Johannesburg. The Hotel will also include a brand new spa, fitness centre and outdoor pool featuring world-class amenities. Between the new food and beverage offerings, and outstanding new spa and fitness facilities, Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff Johannesburg expects to become the first choice for travellers visiting Johannesburg, as well as a social hub for local clientele.

Winemaker interaction tours allow thirsty travellers to savour wines with those who made them. Who better to explain a wine than the person who made it? Interacting with wine makers allows the traveller to truly savour our world-famous wines. Winemaker interaction tours allow travellers to get up close and personal with the makers of their favourite tipples. From chatting to the children of wine farm workers to sipping and spitting with multi-award-winning winemakers there is a tailor-made tour to suit your palate and mood. There are literally thousands of tour options for travellers wishing to discover the glories of the Cape winelands. Tours can seem impersonal, those wishing to interact with the people making the wine should consider the following options: Fiona MacDonald is a former editor of Wine Magazine so her contacts are superb and there is no wine-related inside scoop she can’t secure you access to. Her tours are aimed at those with an existing knowledge of wine – so don’t expect a crash course in how wine is made. Rather she will arrange behind the scenes tours and one-on-one visits with winemakers of note. She has the inside track on lesser-known, up and coming estates and winemakers. Barrel tastings with the winemaker are a speciality of the house. This is a landscape of tall trees, curving coastline, mountain hideaways, artist communities and modern malls. The trick with travelling along the Garden Route is to have enough time to keep slipping off the N2 onto the side-roads with promising destinations. The Garden Route is a mix of modern golf courses, ancient forests, secluded artist communities, retirement estates, modern malls, craft centres, mountain hideaways and beach holidays. A large number of interesting and creative people have come to live down here, drawn to this magnificent stretch of coastline. The main arterial highway of the Garden Route in South Africa - a highlight on most visitors' itineraries - is the N2 stretch running from Heidelberg in the southern Cape to Storms River Village on the Eastern Cape border. While the Garden Route road is extremely scenic, it is the hidden destinations on its side roads that are the secret of this region. That's probably how Oudtshoorn - the ostrich capital of the world - has found its way onto the Garden Route. In reality, both early inhabitants and elephants have been crossing the Outeniqua Mountains from Oudtshoorn to the coast for many centuries. Other towns well worth visiting include Calitzdorp, Sedgefield, The Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The Garden Route is famous for its hardy fynbos floral kingdom, its secluded little bays and its year-round holiday frame of mind. And it's conveniently accessible from Cape Town. Don't forget to look seawards for the Southern Right whales, the humpback, bottlenose and common dolphins, and even killer whales that frolic close to shore, especially near Plettenberg Bay.
