LESSON ONE
THE BIBLE, THE SOURCE & FOUNDATION OF TRUTH.
O
ver the years there have been many criticisms leveled against the Bible. These criticisms were concerning its historical reliability and its accuracy. The critics usually based their attacks on a lack of evidence from outside sources to confirm the Biblical record. Since the Bible is a religious book, many scholars take the position that it is biased and cannot be trusted unless we have corroborating or supporting evidence from extra-Biblical sources. In other words, the Bible is guilty until proven innocent, and a lack of evidence places the Biblical account in doubt. • Is the Bible undeniably the most reliable source of truth among all the holy books of world religious? What conclusive findings and discoveries have shed light on the accuracy of the Bible? • My friends I declare that the Bible is more accurate and reliable than we would ever imagine. Come with me on a modern day journey into the Bible, the most relevant and uncontested source and foundation of
1. What does the Bible say is the source of truth?
(Jn. 17:17) - Sanctify them through thy truth: thy _________is truth.
My friends the word of God is still truth. Mankind, born helpless - Born dependent – does not know what truth is! Only the supreme and eternal God knows what truth is. We can still trust His word. It has been true from the beginning. (Ps 119:89)
2. By what mighty power were the heavens made?
(Ps. 33:6,9) - 6 By the_______ of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the b_________ of his mouth. 9 For he s________, and it was done; he c______________, and it stood fast. Note: Being made in the image and likeness of God, we are like Him. We also have creative abilities. There is potential creative power in the study of the word of God.
LESSON ONE 3. From where did the Bible come?
(2 Pet 1:20-21) - 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but h_______ men of God spake as they were moved by the H_______ G_______. Note: The Word of God came as a result of God’s revelation of Himself to His chosen servants to be delivered to the human family.
4. How did God communicate with His chosen people?
(Num 12:6) - And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a p_________ among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a v_________, and will speak unto him in a d________. Note: If mankind can invent and develop methods and devices of communicating with each other, how much more God is able to communicate with each of us.
5. How did the book of Revelation come down to us?
(Rev. 1:1-3) - 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which G_____ gave unto him, to shew unto his servant’s things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his a_________ unto his servant J_______: 2Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Note: The book of Revelation – the last book of the bible was handed down to us by God the father, which He gave to Jesus Christ, then to the Angels who passed it onto the Apostle John, who later gave to the churches. God wants us to know the events of the end.
6. How else can I know that the Bible came from God?
(Is. 46:9, 10) - 9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the e_____ from the b____________, and from ancient times the things that are not yet d_______ …. Note: I can know that the Bible came from God because God says, “All Scriptures is given by His inspiration.” He prophesied the “things that are not yet done.” Hundreds of Bible prophecies have been fulfilled, specifically and meticulously, often long after the prophetic writer had passed away.
LESSON ONE A. Examples of the many predictions fulfilled:
There are extensive prophecies dealing with individual nations, cities and with the course of history in general, all of which have been literally fulfilled. (1). Note God’s prediction concerning Babylon when it was the Earth’s major city. . Today Babylon is “heaps.” (Jer 51:37) (2). Tyre suffered the same fate as did Babylon: (Ezek 26:1-5, 14). Tyre is still heaps today. (3). Daniel the prophet predicted in about 538 BC (Daniel 9:24-27) that Christ would come as Israel’s promised Savior and Prince 483 years after the Persian emperor would give the Jews authority to rebuild Jerusalem, which was then in ruins. This was clearly and definitely fulfilled, hundreds of years later. • More than 300 prophecies were fulfilled by Christ Himself at His first coming. Many prophets described the life and death of Christ long before He was born. Two examples: a. (Mic 5:2) - But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. b. (Mt 2:1) - Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, c. (Is 7:14) - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. d. (Mt 1:22, 23) - 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 4. Other prophecies deal with the spread of Christianity, as well as various false religions, and many other subjects. • There is no other book, ancient or modern, like the Bible. The vague, and usually erroneous, prophecies of people like Jeanne Dixon, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and others like them are not in the same category at all with the Bible. • There are some other books that claim to be on par with the Bible. No other religious books can ever be compared with the holy pages of the Bible. • Only the Bible manifests this remarkable prophetic evidence for its claim of accuracy, relevancy and reliability.
LESSON ONE 5. There are many other ways I can know the Bible came from God. Examples: (1). The 66 books of the Bible were written over a 1600 year period by some 40 writers who lived in various places with varying culture and education, and yet there is perfect unity. • It all agrees. All the books point to the same Savior and uphold the same high standard of truth and doctrine. God’s eternal plan and purpose binds the book together. (2). The Bible has the answers to life’s problems including death. It tells me where I came from, why I’m here, and where I’m going. (3). The Bible appeals to all. It is understood by educated and uneducated alike, and has changed the lives of millions of people.
7.a. What part of the Bible was written by the inspiration of God?
(2 Tim. 3:16) - A_____ scripture is given by inspiration of God…,
Note: The Scriptures are comprised of both the Old and New Testaments. When 2 Timothy was written only the Old Testament existed. Another striking evidence of divine inspiration is found in the fact that many of the principles of modern science were recorded as facts of nature in the Bible long before scientist confirmed them experimentally. A sampling of these would include: • Roundness of the earth (He sits upon the circle of the earth - Isaiah 40:22) • Almost infinite extent of the celestial universe (For as the heavens are higher than the earth - Isaiah 55:9) • Law of conservation of mass (earth) and energy (heavens) - II Peter 3:7) • Hydrologic cycle - The hydrologic cycle begins with the evaporation of water from the surface of the ocean. As moist air is lifted, it cools and water vapor condenses to form clouds. Moisture is transported around the globe until it returns to the surface as precipitation or rain. (7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again Ecclesiastes 1:7) • Vast number of stars (22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured - (Jeremiah 33:22) • Law of increasing entropy (deterioration, collapse, decay, decline degeneration or destruction), • 25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
LESSON ONE • 26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: 27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end - (Psalm 102:25-27) • Paramount importance of blood in life processes (Leviticus 17:11 – “for the life is in the blood”). • Atmospheric circulation (6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits (Ceiling, boundaries or limits) – (Ecclesiastes 1:6) • Gravitational field (7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing - Job 26:7) There and many others.
b. For what is “all scripture” profitable?
16 … and is profitable for d___________, for r__________, for c_____________, for i_______________ in righteousness: Notice what it is able to do in verse 17: (KJV) - That the man of God may be perfect , thoroughly furnished unto all good works, or (CEV) - The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds. 8. What’s the relationship between faith and the Word of God? (Rom. 10:17) - So then faith cometh by h__________, and hearing by the w_______ of God. Note: Faith helps the reader to grasp the deep truth that is hidden in the precious pages of the Bible and to live by every word.
9. How long will the word of God exist?
(Is. 40:8) - The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for e_______. (Mt. 24:35) - Heaven and earth shall p________ away, but my words shall not p_______ away. Note: The Word of God will outlast heaven and earth. 89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven - (Ps 119:89).
LESSON ONE 10. How then should I receive the word of God?
(1 Thes. 2:13) - For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of m______, but as it is in truth, the word of G_____, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. Note: We should not receive the Bible as the word of man which I cannot always trust, but rather as it is in truth the word of God.
11. Who can understand the Bible – the precious Word of God?
(Mt. 11:25) - At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the w______ and p__________ (learned), and hast revealed them unto b________. Note: Lack of Education does not prevent the unlearned from understanding the word of God. There are many who have not had the opportunity to obtain a formal education, nevertheless through their consistent study of the Bible, they become giants in their thinking and in their ability to comprehend and teach the Bible to others. It is not human wisdom but spiritual discernment that is needed. (1 Cor 2:14)
12. Do you believe that this study is relevant for your life and for others? Is this bible study clear? Do you have any questions?
