THE FORD GT’S STORY The most contentious racing rivalry in the history of motorsport was the mid-1960s FordFerrari feud, which would be the genesis of the Ford GT program.

Henry Ford II, known popularly as “The Deuce,” thought he had a deal with the ‘Il Commendatore’ Enzo Ferrari to purchase the famous Italian automaker in 1963. As the tale goes, ‘Il Commendatore’ reneged on the agreement, and the Deuce swore re-venge. The days of losing to Ferrari on European race tracks had worn deep on his heart. The name and reputation of Ford were at stake, and now it was personal….

The Deuce decided to embark on one of the brashest and boldest maneuvers in auto racing history. He vowed to beat Ferrari on the track, and to do it at the most grueling and demanding race in Europe: the 24 hours at Le Mans.

To do that, he needed a race car created from scratch that would out-duel Ferrari. The man selected to do this job was Carroll Shelby. Born out of vengeance and a desire to win at all costs, the GT40 was created. It would be an epic matchup at Le Mans, a duel between exotic racing technology and American brute force. Ferrari’s all-aluminum V-12s with dual overhead camshafts, fuel injection and 450 bhp versus the equally powerful American power plant, a 7.0-liter cast iron V-8, twin 4-barrel carburetors and 465 bhp.

THE MERKURY 4 The Merkury 4 is a work of art, a unique bespoke heritage model sheathed in brilliant silver and fluorescent orange, wearing the famous Gulf Oil livery that recalls the GT40s that raced at Daytona and Sebring.

Merkury 4’s color scheme was accomplished using chemically bonded Mirrachrome paint accented with a fluorescent orange center stripe separated with a satin black pin-stripe sand custom graphics. The black carries into roundels with futuristic number 4s, printed in a digital font designed by Camilo.

Beyond the gorgeous paint and graphics, Merkury 4 has performance upgrades that honor Ford’s racing past. It’s lowered, shorn with HRE wheels. Dynoed at 725 rwhp, the car is as beautiful as it is fast. The car’s creation took 18 months, with meticulous attention given to every detail and factory-build quality.

Merkury 4 started life as a three option, solid red Ford GT. While key upgrades were made to achieve greater horsepower, a stiffer suspension and more free-breathing ex-haust, the goal was never to deviate from the goals set by the SVT division at Ford, nor to alter the car beyond the scope of the factory-built supercar. Performance modi-fications were overseen and executed by former Ford GT engineers.

C AMILO PARDO O N C R E AT I N G THE MERKURY 4 After leaving Ford, Camilo went to work designing Ford GTs for private collectors around the country. To date, he’s created eight of these cars, all uniquely crafted one-of-a-kind collectibles. They are known as the Ford GT Signature Series.

When Camilo was given the commission, he was also given free rein to design the ultimate Ford GT, the car that would become Merkury 4.

H O W R I C H B R O O K S B U I LT T H E U LT I M AT E F O R D G T Rich Brooks knows powerful engines. He’s a former Roush team leader recruited by Ford to work on their most complicated and intricate engines, including the GT.

After Ford, Rich branched out and opened The GT Guys LLC, a startup focusing on GT builds, parts, and collaborations.

When Camilo Pardo reached out about the Merkury 4, Rich and his team of engineers jumped at the chance to create one of the most beautiful pieces of art and technically perfect supercars. It was the chance to be part of history and the future.

Mechanical upgrades and body modifications were all performed by Rich’s shop, The GT Guys, in Detroit, Michigan.

They smoothed the clamshell vents and installed Billet vents to prevent warping from speed. They also got rid of the stock airbox and added cold air intake hidden inside the wheel wells.

Attention to detail was vital, with painted fuel doors, valve covers, customized wheels and center-bolts rims. Horsepower was dynode at a now a blistering 725 rwhp.

is a mid-engine two-seater sports car. Ford Motor Company produced the Ford GT for the 2005 to 2006 model years. The designers drew inspiration from Ford’s classic GT40 race cars of the 1960s and because of nearly identical styling, the new Ford GT is sometimes mistaken for its 1960s counterpart.

DEVELOPMENT T HE F OR D GT began as a concept car designed in anticipation of the automaker’s centennial year and as part of its drive to showcase and revive its “heritage” names such as Mustang and Thunderbird. At the 1995 Detroit Auto Show, the Ford GT90 concept was shown. At the 2002 auto show, Ford unveiled a new GT40 Concept car. Camilo Pardo, the head of Ford’s “Living Legends” studio, is credited as the chief designer of the GT and worked under the guidance of J Mays.

The GT is similar in outward appearance to the original Ford GT40 cars, but bigger, wider, and 3 in (76 mm) taller than the original 40in (100 cm); as a result, a potential name for the car was the GT43. Although the cars are visually related, structurally, there is no similarity between the modem GT and the 1960s GT40 that inspired it. Three production prototype cars were shown in 2003 as part of Ford’s centenary, and delivery of the production Ford GT began in the fall of 2004.

A British company, Safir Engineering, who built continuation GT40s in the 1980s, owned the “GT40” trademark at that time. When they completed production, they sold the excess parts, tooling, design, and trademark to a small Ohio company called Safir GT40 Spares. This company licensed the use of the “GT40” trademark to Ford for the initial 2002 show car. When Ford decided to make the production vehicle, negotiations between the two firms failed. The production cars do not wear the GT40 badge.
